narciso the harpoon

So it's just like CBS/New York Times poll, yikes,

narciso the harpoon

Is today really you're birthday, Maybee

Sue

Good grief, MayBee, you have to be at least a hundred years old by now, as many birthdays as you've had since I've known you.

Appalled

I guess someone should ask Obabma, in one of these one on ones, why he isn't a socialist, and why he dislikes being called one. Maybe the ladies on the View would like to pose the question....

Chubby

I betcha he does damage control re the resignation of Mrs. Sherrod. Women in the View's audience are no doubt steaming about how he treated her, and he needs to cement their forgiveness, and blame others for the situation.

hit and run

narciso:

I thought you had the list?

Pagar

Thanks Larry, In mentioning numbers of abortions I've pretty much given up trying to give exact figures with a link since all the figures seem to be out of date anyway.

It totally amazes me, we are in the computer age. A figure is entered in the computer and depending on what the figure is to be used for it becomes part of the larger number.

For example, an item is sold in a retail establishment. Seconds later, anywhere in the chain every computer shows that item is gone and the number on hand is one less than before the sale.

I'm not exactly sure how the reporting goes for an abortion. But I am sure how the reporting goes on a death. As soon as an official determines a death has occurred computer entries are generated. Say a death has occurred as the result of an auto crash.
The news gets the info that one death has occurred, in moments after the highway patrol releases the info. Why does it take a year or two to find out how many auto deaths occurred in the US?
IMO, It is because there are numberous government employees massaging the data that don't need to be. Governments has never streamlined their operations like retailers have.

narciso the harpoon

It's a partial list, like an Egyptian cartouche

Porchlight

Governments has never streamlined their operations like retailers have.

And they probably never will, despite claims about electronic medical records. Imagine how many jobs it would eliminate. Moreover, the various government entities involved want to be able to massage that data as needed so as to make the case for bigger budgets.

I despise the trivialization that the current proliferation of knee-jerk, politically motivated accusations of racism represent as much as anyone. I also believe in seeking out facts, evidence and context. If, however, Sherrod is "guilty" of hyperbole when describing the events in question, what then should we make of those who do the opposite?

A handcuffed black man in policy custody is beaten to death on the court house steps in one of the most racist counties in the country. The perpetrators are convicted of violating the dead man's civil rights. There is no murder conviction to be overturned by the Supreme Court.

Sherrod's father is shot to death by a white farmer. A grand jury does not even charge the perpetrator with a crime.

But these might not be racist offenses! They don't comport with the popular understanding of lynchings! White people were lynched too! Sherrod's credibility is shot!

My God.

Sue

Rangel in last minute negotiations with ethics committee. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100727/ap_on_go_co/us_rangel_ethics_6>Source

Sue

Sherrod's credibility is shot!

With me, it is. It actually happened when she told the audience he could get one of his own kind, a white lawyer, to help him. And accused me, a white person, of opposing Obamacare because he's a black president.

I'm pretty much through with worrying about whether I'm considered a racist or not because no matter what I do or how I feel, I'm from the south. Another block of people, along with Christians, it's okay to stereotype.

Captain Hate

I've said this elsewhere on the internet: Nothing dumbs down online discussions as much as talking about racism

boris

"If, however, Sherrod is "guilty" of hyperbole when describing the events in question, what then should we make of those who do the opposite?"

Again, IMO everybody is exaggerating here so everybody is "guilty" of hyperbole. So what. In everday interracial murders in this country there needs to be additional evidence of a hate crime. If you want to analyze the proper location for burden of proof be my guest, just don't straw dummy up the discussion.

Jane

Sue,

If Rangel gets off with an apology, do you think there will be hell to pay? The rest of us would be in big trouble if we did that stuff, obviously. I'm not sure the public is willing to over look it at this point.

Clarice

Very funny, ignatz..

boris

Who else finds it odd that google runs out of suggestions when I enter "wichita wildi ..."

Melinda Romanoff

Jane-

He walks with a fine.

JM Hanes

Sue:

That is not the basis of Jeffrey Lord's attack, nor the thrust of a great many of the comments here.

boris:

I oppose hate crimes legislation. I oppose charging men with civil liberties violations, instead of murder, or not charging them at all. No strawmen. No inconsistency.

Chubby

Clarice ...

could you contact Rush ? His research department would probably have access to stats like that.

Chubby

He resigns and the charges are dropped.

boris

"oppose hate crimes legislation"

So your standards are different than what is currently in effect. Nobody here has any obligation to comply with your non standard standard.

But these might not be racist offenses! They don't comport with the popular understanding of lynchings! White people were lynched too! Sherrod's credibility is shot!
I could be wrong but that looks like some kind of cross between sarcasm and scolding.

larry

one of his own kind..." Me, too, Sue. Sherrod is a racist who has added class envy warrior to her C. V.

Clarice

I think they have to make Rangel resign to move this out of the spotloght. Of course he could runa again and will probably win if he does.

Clarice

chubby, I have no better contacts with him than anyone else here. Honest.

Clarice

The stupidity of this article from my point of view in case I have not made myself clear is that it introduces a less important side issue. Smash your opponent in the nuts. Don't waste time scuffing his ankles or knees. My mentor for that was a civil rights/labor lawyer who among other things headed up the anti-Bork campaign.

Our opponents are certainly dumb, but they do know how to fight to win and we'd better learn.

Chubby

Clarice you have name recognition ... your name on an email to his site might get their attention.

narciso the harpoon

He's been thorougly wacked with a two by four
in the comment section. Was it John Doar, Clarice

Sue

Sue,

If Rangel gets off with an apology, do you think there will be hell to pay?

No. There is a double standard going on here, and not just him being a congressperson. He is held to a lower standard. If he wanted to stay and fight it, he could probably still win in his district. And the media won't touch him too badly.

Sue

nor the thrust of a great many of the comments here.

Really? The thrust of a great many of the comments here was whether or not lynching implied being hanged by a rope. It does. That is the first thing anyone thinks of that has watched a western or heard stories of the KKK. And I believe Mrs. Sherrod knows that. What pisses me off about the article written by Lord is it started a stupid conversation amongst guilt-fed white people. Not his intended target, I assume.

Frau Edith Steingehirn

The Torch got away with his crimes misdeeds with barely a slap on the wrist. Why not Rangel? We just heard at Byrd's funeral that the totality of a man's life is what counts.

Dave (in MA) --->>> BO Stinks <<<---

Why the long face?

It's "V-K Day" on Herald columnist Howie Carr's show this afternoon. He hasn't sounded this happy since Marsha went down. One caller dubbed the vessel "PT-1099".

Pagar

"why he isn't a socialist, and why he dislikes being called one"

I don't think after one reads the new book
by Stanley Kurtz "Radical in Chief" there will be any doubt. LUN

Pagar

LUN for previous
Kurtz post.

Danube of Thought

Sherrod's father is shot to death by a white farmer. A grand jury does not even charge the perpetrator with a crime.

That is one event that I would like to know more about. Sherrod says he was "murdered." What happened? And are there any witnesses to the cross-burning incident? It seems odd to me that more information hasn't been forthcoming about this.

bunkerbuster

If Obama were a socialist, he'd have argued for nationalizing the banks, health care and the auto industry. Instead, he's steadfastly pushed for public-private solutions to clean up the mess those crucial industries have become under decades of conservative policymaking...

bunkerbuster

The white power meme has such legs in the wingnutosphere because it's about identity, which is the basis for wingnut politics.

Extraneus

No kidding. Re-stating that as a fact is a bridge too far for me.

Sure, that's what Shirley Sherrod said. As of now, these are unverified claims, not established facts.

She also said there were three witnesses to the "murder," if I'm not mistaken. Hosie Miller died in 1965, according to Ancestry.com (which as of last night was most recently updated 6 months ago by userid smsherrod). Are any of these three witnesses still alive?

Do we even know the cause of death?

Porchlight

If Obama were a socialist, he'd have argued for nationalizing the banks, health care and the auto industry.

You're right.

Guilty.

See AmSpec for Jeff Lord's defense of himself. Apparently the Supreme Court agreed that the three were acting with legal authority, therefore not a lynching. He has another point about 'mob' which is not so certain.

Again, with this case and with Sherrod's father, we do not know whether the causes were race based. One person killing a neighbor is usually about some other point than race. Police brutality often has nothing to do with race.

Sherrod's a racebaiter, and the default assumption can be that she has used these two horrifying episodes to racebait.

Show me the racism. Don't assume it and don't tell me it is there if you don't know.

Dude

Noticed your comment on my Daily Caller post calling on conservatives to "get over" the Journolist flap.

FYI - I'm a conservative who worked for the 1984 Reagan campaign and three Republican US Senators. I just think conservatives should quit worrying about liberal bias and work on a message.

Thanks for noticing anyway.
