Joe Lieberman thinks someone should put the brakes on the Ground Zero Mosque. But the Landmarks Commission removed a final hurdle, so it looks as if we have a Sudden Vehicle Acceleration problem.
In a helpful contribution to the lefty faith-based initiative backing this project, Jeffrey Goldberg explains that "If He Could, Bin Laden Would Bomb the Cordoba Initiative", since Bin Laden is opposed to moderate Muslims. Of course, it may be that Bin Laden and his family are building this project, since the developer won't tell us about his financial backers. Would this project still be a tribute to tolerance if it were funded by Wahhabi money from Saudi Arabia mixed in with some neo-Nazi cash from Europe?
Oh, well - the developer has promised it will be all right, so of course we have no worries:
Another contentious issue was how the center would raise the needed $100 million to finance the project, giving rise to speculation that the money could come from extremist groups.
Sharif El-Gamal dismissed such allegations, saying the money would come from a mix of equity, bonds, grants and contributions. He also called the building's proximity to the World Trade Center site accidental and said it was purchased to meet the needs of a growing Muslim community.
Accidental? The building was damaged in the 9/11 attack, so its historic tie to Ground Zero is much stronger than mere "proximity". I'm not fuly up to speed on downtown Manhattan rel estate, but if radical Muslims wanted to buy property destroyed in the 9/11 attack and put up a Victory Mosque, this is might well be the only property. I doubt even Bloomberg and the Times would agree to a mosque at Ground Zero itself.
WHEN ANALOGIES FAIL: Peter Beinart went with the "be tolerant, not a bigot" defense of the mosque and kept typing long after his brain turned off:
The ADL’s rationale for opposing the Ground Zero mosque is that “building an Islamic Center in the shadow of the World Trade Center will cause some victims more pain—unnecessarily—and that is not right.” Huh? What if white victims of African-American crime protested the building of a black church in their neighborhood? Or gentile victims of Bernie Madoff protested the building of a synagogue?
Hmm - I get the difference between building a mosque near Ground Zero and building a mosque at a respectful remove from Ground Zero; it's sort of like saying that I don't mind people dancing, but please, not on my grave.
However, I can't make the leap to Beinart's analogy of "victims of black crime". Were the criminals motivated by religious extremism? And can Beinart's victims associate some clear geographic region with the crimes, or would the idea be to ban black churches anywhere near anyone who has ever been victimized by black criminals? That is absurd in a way that the Ground Zero issue is not.
Is there a Shinto Temple at Pearl Harbor? That would show our tolerance, as well as make a bit of amends for the Japanese internment during WWII and a couple of nukes we dropped. But apparently the nearest temple is five miles away. What kind of a country are we living in?
THE CARMELITE NUNS: The story of the Carmelite Nuns at Auschwitz is an interesting analogy.
In the 1980s, Carmelite nuns moved into an abandoned building on the edge of the former Nazi death camp to pray for the souls taken there. As with the dispute over the mosque near Ground Zero, the convent's presence escalated into a clash not only between different faiths but between competing historical narratives. As with today's clash too, it seemed intractable until the Polish pope stepped in.
For Jews, Auschwitz is a symbol of the Shoah, and the presence of a convent looked like an effort to Christianize a place of Jewish suffering. Suspicions were further aroused by a fundraising brochure from an outside Catholic group, which referred to the convent as a "guarantee of the conversion of strayed brothers." The protests mounted over the course of several years and various interfaith agreements, and pointed to the real strains that remained between Poles and Jews over a shared history with very different perspectives.
Many Catholics, not just in Poland, could not understand how nuns begging God's forgiveness and praying for the souls of the departed could possibly offend anyone. There was also a nationalist element. Many members of the Polish resistance had also been murdered at Auschwitz. And again like our present controversy at Ground Zero, intemperate reactions and statements from both sides only inflamed passions.
So what did Pope John Paul II do? He waited, and he counseled. And when he saw that the nuns were not budging—and that their presence was doing more harm than good—he asked the Carmelites to move. He acknowledged that his letter would probably be a trial to each of the sisters, but asked them to accept it while continuing to pursue their mission in that same city at another convent that had been built for them.
From contemporaneous NY Times reporting we see that Catholic nuns were not utterly out of place at Auschwitz:
As news of the drive spread, many Jewish groups in Europe issued statements demanding that Auschwitz be preserved as a monument to the mass killing of the Jews. The establishment of a convent, they said, insulted the memory of the Jews killed in Auschwitz. About 2 million to 2.25 million Jews and 1.25 million to 1.5 million non-Jews, mostly Polish Catholics, died at the camp, according to a spokesman for the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
If I were splitting hairs, I would argue that the Jews were killed for being Jews; the Polish Catholics were killed for being Polish.

Radical Islam is brutally murdering people every day; if the moderates want to signal their disgust with that, the money being spent on the mosque would be far better spent on or donated to a fund to help the families of the victims killed by the extremists. The latter would tangibly demonstrate sincerity of motive more than the auestionable symbolism of building the mosque. It would also demonstrate respect for others that moderate Islam so craves itself.

Anduril: No mas means no more, but you haven't come up with anything to begin with, other than assertions about what polls say. If you were interested in demonstrating your views rather than simply declaring them rhetorically, you'd of course respond to Pew evidence, which is unassailably that by far the vast majority of American Muslims reject bin Ladenism and radical Islam.
I have something else to attend to just now, but be assured I will find the time to gather more polling data that disproves your claim.
Meanwhile, I'll leave you and all a wager: That the percentage of Americans that support a nuclear first strike is larger than the number of Muslims that backed 9/11.

"Radical Islam" is the Islam of the Koran, Mohammad and most of his descendents and is the Islam that exists when or where Islam is expansionist, in the majority and confident.
"Moderate Islam" is either secularized or demoralized Islam that largely exists when or where Islam is suppressed or in a weak minority.

Janet, that was a great LUN. And, Penn and Teller are correct that the best thing to do is build the twin Towers exactly as they were. I think we still have enough unspent stimulus money to do it, and I doubt anyone can make a serious argument against using unspent stimulus money to fund the construction jobs that would result from rebuilding the Twin Towers. And, in the name of diversity and tolerance, I propose that the first floor of one of the newly built Twin Towers be devoted to a library in honor of a black African woman of the highest class, intelligence and courage. Yes, the first floor of one of the Twin Towers should house the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Library For the Study of Philosophy and Theology. Perhaps we can get big honcho developer Sharif El-Gamal to make a ten million dollar contribution to the library.
Furthermore, in the name of diversity, I propose that the first floor of the other one of the newly built Twin Towers house a center devoted to funding educational programs for women in traditional Islamic regions of the world. With Islam being the quintessential religion of peace and tolerance, I'm sure money from the Islamic world will come flowing in to this center. Perhaps Sharif El-Gamal will also kick in a few of his millions of dollars to the center. As a gesture of friendship to Iranians, we will name the center the Neda Soltan Center For the Empowerment of the Women of Islam.

your objectionable opinions are too numerous to itemize
My curiosity arose from the fact that so few JOMers try to engage my opinions, or fear ostracism if they do--I thought this might be an opportunity to find out whether anyone really does disagree with me about anything substantive. The interesting fact of the matter is that most JOMers seem to agree with my views and rarely disagree, judging from comments. Anyway, a short list of examples would have sufficed--just as narciso offered what I presume was his short list of my objectionable personal characteristics: "Jew baiting, pedantic, byzantine, popinjay." No doubt he could have extended that list considerably... Well, maybe with a little help.

Exactly where is the "tolerance" and "compassion" that liberals preach found in placing a mosgue in such a sensitive location?
Do Muslims get a pass on being "tolerant" and compassionate towards others? Why?
Wouldn't any thoughtful, respectful, religion do what (thankfully) the Pope did in the example above? There was no compelling religious (or other) reason for the nuns to locate at Auschwitz and the Pope properly instructed them to drop it.
Where are the "moderate" Muslim voices who populate a "respectful" religion who are counseling sensitivity for the families and friends of 3,000 victims of a disaster. Maybe these people are "too" sensitive. Its arguable. However, what necessitates a mosque at this particular site?
As there is no "good" reason for this particular site, Muslim insistence on this location, over valid objections, indicates at least bad faith if not a wholly malicious reason for building a mosque at this site.
Why do we have to tolerate such intolerable, ugly, choices by institutions (religious or otherwise)?

Window manager
"A window manager is system software that controls the placement and appearance of windows within a windowing system in a graphical user interface.[1] Most window managers are designed to help provide a desktop environment. They work in conjunction with the underlying graphical system which provides required functionality such as support for graphics hardware, pointing devices, and a keyboard, and are often written and created using a widget toolkit.[2]
"Few window managers are designed with clear distinction between the windowing system and the window manager. Every graphical operating system which uses a windows metaphor has some form of window management; however, in practice, the elements of this functionality vary greatly.[3] The elements usually associated with window managers are those which allow the user to open, close, minimize, maximize, move, resize, and keep track of running windows, including window decorators. Many window managers also come with docks, task bars, program launchers, desktop icons, and wallpaper."

I found it very disturbing this morning listening to Fox News on Sirius when in a discussion on the Missouri vote on the insurance mandate, one of the commentators said something to the effect of "it really doesn't matter how they voted. It is up to the courts."
So 71% of the voters in Missouri expressed the will of the people in a representative democracy and it doesn't matter. The arrogance of the intelligentsia and the Liberals in particular is stunning.
What the Left has done is to craft a "heads I win, tails I win" strategy. Just as here in California a federal judge is expected to rule on Proposition 8 regarding gay marriage, they simply take their losses to court and venue shop.
What is also amazing is that we have now crafted a legal environment where the foundations have been swept away completely. The whole Greco -Judeo-Christian foundation of 2,500 years of law and philosophy has been swept away by legal fiat.

Matt's post touches on an issue that has fascinated me for several months now: to what extent will theoretically irrelevant events affect the Supreme Court's view of Obamacare?
Every purely legal analysis says "none whatsoever." But it's not that simple. As Finley Peter Dunne said, "...the Supreme Court follows the election returns."
In this case the Court will be deciding whether the commerce (or taxing) power reaches to an extent it has never reached before. In other words, no principle of stare decisis will be applicable here. And while it considers that question, there will be roughly twenty lawsuits pending in which states have sought to invalidate the law. And there are opinion polls. And there is the party-line vote in both houses of congress. And there is the Missouri referendum.
So, what does it all mean?

O/T, but I not only found this interesting, I personally relate to the findings of PajamasMedia poll on the Tea Party:

IMHO the Victory Mosque needs to be completely surrounded by brothels, whore houses, bath houses and strip joints. I believe the major flaw in the religion of peace is that sex is totally controlled and distorted more so than any other major religion. If a woman's hair(!!!!)alone can inflame and drive a faithful man to rape and murder, it is easy to see why so many hormone-engorged males turn to martyrdom. Seriously, NYC has at least 300 mosques, I've heard. There is no need for the Victory Mosque at all, and *no* need for it to be located near ground zero.
"JOMers ... fear ostracism if they do (engage with me)..."
I see no proof for this.

I think the TPM is what has usually been known as the "Silent Majority".

For the record, I do agree with and enjoy occasional anduril posts. I'm just not as likely to read them because I am accustomed to scrolling by the cut-and-paste jobs.

Yes Matt, I so agree. Like that little city recently that enacted laws against renting to illegals...being sued by the ACLU & others. Who has the money to fight these extortionists? They lose because they can't afford to fight endlessly. The left has deep pockets to keep laws in court & unenforced if they want...so they win just by endless delay.

Once again we are in full agreement, DoT. I thought that column was incredibly well written.

I wrote a piece at You TOO yesterday about the MA legislature amending the constitution to make sure the people get no input. It's happening everywhere, always by democrats, and intended to have the courts replace the legislature. It's scary.

Okay, the minute I read this I thought it was a glimpse into the future . . . the Future Fearless Wolverine . . .
But, not yet anyway. Of course, I am sure Clarice is encouraging a similar can do attitude.

and if not by the courts, then by the rules & regulations put out by empowered agencies (the EPA). Law abiding citizens have no recourse.

Also, centralcal, one doesn't want to be associated with, well, you know, those people. Hint: they go "muddin'" on the weekends.
I mean, I don't like our country going down the toilet any more than the next guy, but just don't let me be associated with people who wouldn't know a Freudean critique of a novel if it walked up to them and waved its hands in front of their faces.

"Turkey"
You may have scored a bit of an own goal here. Turkey used to be a moderate Muslim nation. Now they are less so. Did the religion change or the party in power?
