Geez, what kind of a world are we living in when the Tea Party candidate backed by the popular former governor can only manage a razor-thin margin which may not hold up?

Even if the Murkowski clan's friends pull it out for Lisa, I'd still say this is quite a tribute to Sarah Barracuda's savvy and power.

Do you think Miller has as good a chance in the general election as Murkowski? My husband follows Alaska politics and doesn't think so.

Jim: re: CNN and facts - clearly you have never watched Rick Sanchez and Jessica Yellin. They are on during my lunch hour. When I can no longer tolerate another minute of Shep, I click over to CNN. Only last about 30 seconds there.
CNN's ratings are really, really bad.

The Slate article is among the very best things to happen this election. What a crop of morons the MSM is. Better still, the people have figured it out.
Clarice, we are seeing anything but politics as usual. More republicans went out to vote in Florida yesterday than since 1928, and Rubio was basically uncontested. And the polls got it wrong in Florida, Alaska and AZ (Quayle) so I'd say all bets are off at this point.

Treacher's gotcha at the end of Slate's Dave Weigel defending Slate's Alexandra Gutierrez with "probably everybody got it wrong"...without Weigel mentioning that (see Treacher's bottom link) Guttierrez is his girlfriend is too delicious.

Something like that Elliott.
One of the reasons I find it hard to discuss politics with those who still rely solely on conventional media sources, is they are so information deprived we inhabit different universes.

Posted by: bunky | August 25, 2010 at 12:35 PM
We'll see how it all shakes out in these races. But the one indisputable fact is that the voter natives are damned restless. Incumbents of all stripes need to know "Ask not for whom the jungle drum tolls, it tolls for thee." So a smart pundit should know to STFU until the last vote is counted. I don't doubt that Palin can sprinkle pixy dust on many a campaign, but even she is not going to be 100% successful in her choices.

Major leaving as the top rated cable news WH correspondent for a mostly inside the beltway political journal as a Congressional correspondent!? Wow! You know what this means?
I take it that in a normal political climate it was like a down grade but I think it tells us something we probably already knew - Obama is passe, gone, nowhere man and Congress is going Red all over and after November that's where all the action will be. Major is a smart guy and he sees where we are headed. I just pray that NJ allows him some room to swing the cat and keeps those other idiots out of his karma.

Mel:
"cienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2010) — In the aftermath of the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, a dispersed oil plume was formed at a depth between 3,600 and 4,000 feet and extending some 10 miles out from the wellhead. An intensive study by scientists with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that microbial activity, spearheaded by a new and unclassified species, degrades oil much faster than anticipated. This degradation appears to take place without a significant level of oxygen depletion.
"Our findings show that the influx of oil profoundly altered the microbial community by significantly stimulating deep-sea psychrophilic (cold temperature) gamma-proteobacteria that are closely related to known petroleum-degrading microbes," says Terry Hazen, a microbial ecologist with Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division and principal investigator with the Energy Biosciences Institute, who led this study. "This enrichment of psychrophilic petroleum degraders with their rapid oil biodegradation rates appears to be one of the major mechanisms behind the rapid decline of the deepwater dispersed oil plume that has been observed."
The uncontrolled oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico from BP's deepwater well was the deepest and one of the largest oil leaks in history. The extreme depths in the water column and the magnitude of this event posed a great many questions. In addition, to prevent large amounts of the highly flammable Gulf light crude from reaching the surface, BP deployed an unprecedented quantity of the commercial oil dispersant COREXIT 9500 at the wellhead, creating a plume of micron-sized petroleum particles. Although the environmental effects of COREXIT have been studied in surface water applications for more than a decade, its potential impact and effectiveness in the deep waters of the Gulf marine ecosystem were unknown."

The article I linked to cites credible witnesses to continued nocturnal dispersant release, by hired guns with no experience in the matter.
And they're using a nastier dispersant than the 9500.
The chemist didn't know whether it was BP, or the FFeds doing the "night work".
I usually scoff at the "black helicopter" stuff but the dishonesty at 1600 makes me think twice.

Posted by: Danube of Thought | August 25, 2010 at 02:30 PM
one of his samples actually exploded during testing due - he believes - to the presence of methane gas or Corexit, the dispersant that BP has been using in the Gulf:
I wouldn't put too much stock in this, as the explanation is nonsense. The amount of methane contained in a surface-water sample is negligible, and surfactants (like Corexit) do not release gas when contacted with what only was described as "an organic solvent," unless there are some really, really weird additives.
The reported levels of oil are pretty low, and without digging more into the composition, the number is worthless anyway. I'd bet you get that much oil (50 to 200 ppm) in a southern swimming pool from sun tan lotions.

Frau;
attached is my comment on the proposed ban left on their comments page. Thanks for the tip-off.
Our company has significant experience in the ill effects of the lead ban in electronics devices, where the cost of alternatives, both economically and environmentally, is far higher than that of using lead, which has been in safe use for 2,000+ years.
In addition, lead free electronic devices have a much greater failure rate than those using conventional eutectic (63/37) solder, which will contribute to much greater use of the substitute materials, further damaging the environment and filling landfills.
This is just another attempt to ban bullets. Here in lovely Kalifornia, Reichsfuehrer Schwarzenegger signed a bill to limit ammunition sales to 50 rounds per purchase, with photo ID and a fingerprint required, to begin early next year.
Basically, the politicians and bureaucrats are doing their best to subvert the 2nd Amendment and the potential for any opposition to their new fascist system.
Having passed through O'Hare TSA his morning, I am still ticked off.
"Dear Sirs;
I read of the recent proposal to ban any lead containing materials in ammunition for small arms and would like to express our company's opposition to this proposal.
Having seen the effect of a ban on lead in the electronics industry, to whom our company is a significant supplier, we have seen that the alternatives are environmentally more damaging than the existing solutions.
Materials such as Bismuth, Silver, etc. have a far greater negative environmental impact when mined and processed which clearly outweighs any environmental benefit derived from the banning of lead in the application described.
Further, there is little if any data documenting a negative long term environmental effect on flora and fauna from the use of lead in the application. Recent and existing regulations already ensure the general good of the public and environment.
Sincerely;
XXXX
