NBC/WSJ Poll finds Obama approval back to 50%

From KD=

"What a difference a couple of months makes. Nothing at all has changed in Obama's actual handling of the BP spill, of course. He's doing exactly the same things he was doing back in June. But now the leak has finally been capped, and that must mean he's doing a better job, right?

Fascinatingly, though, the poll also includes a comparison to approval ratings of George Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina, and in that case time definitely didn't heal all wounds. In the immediate aftermath of the storm Bush's approval-disapproval rating was 48-48. A year later it had dropped to 36-53. I guess by 2006 people were just really, really tired of George Bush."

bush legacy stuck to bottom of your shoes | August 13, 2010 at 08:59 AM

Yeah, people are looking back at those 5% unemployment rates and real job growth and thinking: "Man, that really sucked, I'm glad we have Obama's 9.5% jobless rate now and we've wiped out 7 milloin jobs since he was ellected. It's so much better than before."

A reasonable alternative to Boxer? The only downside? Maguire occasionally links to him.

Mickey Kaus for U.S. Senate

Why I'm Running

I have no special beef with the incumbent, Barbara Boxer. She is a state-of-the-art Democrat. But to be "state-of-the-art" in our party is not such a good thing anymore.

"State of the art" means the incumbent has learned to please the party's interest groups, often at the expense of the needs of average individuals and the party's own ideals.

It means the incumbent supports a "card check" bill that would effectively take away the secret ballot from workers in order to give more power to the big unions-- including public employee unions--whose influence over our great industries and our government has led to disaster.

"State of the art" means the incumbent endorses a misguided immigrant legalization scheme, a conditional amnesty, that would create a huge incentive for more illegal immigration--before we're sure our broken border has been fixed to withstand it. We tried the legalization approach in 1986. A wave of illegal immigration followed. Another new wave would again bid down the wages of unskilled American (and legal immigrant) workers--the people who've been hurt the most in the economy of the past three decades.

It shouldn't be the policy of the Democratic party to make it worse for them.

These aren't minor questions. One affects the organization of the entire economy. The other could irreversibly alter the quality of American life.

I am a lifelong Democrat. But on those issues, and others, what has become the party's dogma--what you have to say and think if you want to run for office as an anointed Democrat--no longer passes the test of common sense.

Common sense tells you that when you can't fire bad teachers because their union won't allow it, you'll get bad schools. Common sense tells you that when you keep flooding the labor market with new unskilled workers, wages will deterioriate.

To see why the state-of-the-Democratic-art isn't working for the nation, you only have to look at the state of the public schools, the state of our auto industry, and the state of our local and national budgets .

This isn't the Democratic party I signed up for. It's not the party many common sense Democratic voters signed up for.

I intend to try my best in the months ahead to offer these common sense voters a way to make their presence known and change our party's course before it's too late. I want to debate these issues and offer alternatives, not just say 'yes' to the party's entrenched powers.

Democrats deserve a choice too.

And just a reminder of who the real Cronie Capitalists are:>Model corruption
The truth about the GM 'rescue'

In other words, the UAW got three to four times as much as the bondholders for a smaller claim on GM's assets. The union even boasted to its members in May 2009 that it had made no concessions on pay, health care or pensions in the restructuring.

In effect, the government divided up GM's creditors into favored and unfavored groups, then gave a fat stake in the reorganized business to the favored (a k a longtime Democratic Party donors). On top of that, Washington also ordered the shutdown of 1,650 GM dealers and another 1,000 Chrysler dealers as part of its takeover.

Remember this as the president brags about recent gains in auto-industry jobs: Even though some plants have added union jobs, many in the dealerships have been lost.

Rob Crawford

In effect, the government divided up GM's creditors into favored and unfavored groups, then gave a fat stake in the reorganized business to the favored...

There are a raft of words to describe that. I'll refrain from using them, because once I start using them I'm going to slide into using rougher language.

Obama's hand-picked GM CEO made a comment last week about GovMo being a stigma limiting sales, and this week unexpectedly resigned.

Regarding those "F*ck tea" t-shirts, I'll give them credit for at least putting the asterisk in the right place.

I remember a post from the halcyon days of Usenet when a guy, wanting to express his disagreement with someone but not wanting to use an actual obscenity, wrote: "b*llshit!"

lol, PD

the problem is black hypersensitivity

CALLER: How about the N-word? So, the N-word's been thrown around --

SCHLESSINGER: Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic, and all you hear is nigger, nigger, nigger.

CALLER: That isn't --

SCHLESSINGER: I don't get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it's a horrible thing; but when black people say it, it's affectionate. It's very confusing. Don't hang up, I want to talk to you some more. Don't go away.

I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger. I'll be right back.

After taking a commercial break, Schlessinger resumed her discussion with the caller:

SCHLESSINGER: I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger, talking to Jade. What did you think about during the break, by the way?

CALLER: I was a little caught back by the N-word that you spewed out, I have to be honest with you. But my point is, race relations --

SCHLESSINGER: Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians.

CALLER: But that doesn't make it right. I mean, race is a [unintelligible] --

SCHLESSINGER: My dear, my dear --

CALLER: -- since Obama's been in office --

SCHLESSINGER: -- the point I'm trying to make --

CALLER: -- racism has come to another level that's unacceptable.

SCHLESSINGER: Yeah. We've got a black man as president, and we have more complaining about racism than ever. I mean, I think that's hilarious.

CALLER: But I think, honestly, because there's more white people afraid of a black man taking over the nation.

SCHLESSINGER: They're afraid.

CALLER: If you want to be honest about it [unintelligible]

SCHLESSINGER: Dear, they voted him in. Only 12 percent of the population's black. Whites voted him in.

CALLER: It was the younger generation that did it. It wasn't the older white people who did it.

CALLER: It was the younger generation --

SCHLESSINGER: All right. All right.

CALLER: -- that did it.

SCHLESSINGER: Chip on your shoulder. I can't do much about that.

CALLER: It's not like that.

SCHLESSINGER: Yeah. I think you have too much sensitivity --

CALLER: So it's OK to say "nigger"?

SCHLESSINGER: -- and not enough sense of humor.

CALLER: It's OK to say that word?

SCHLESSINGER: It depends how it's said.

CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?

SCHLESSINGER: It's -- it depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's OK.

CALLER: But you're not black. They're not black. My husband is white.

SCHLESSINGER: Oh, I see. So, a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that.

CALLER: I can't believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the "nigger" word, and I hope everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: I didn't spew out the "nigger" word.

CALLER: You said, "Nigger, nigger, nigger."

SCHLESSINGER: Right, I said that's what you hear.

CALLER: Everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: Yes, they did.

CALLER: I hope everybody heard it.

SCHLESSINGER: They did, and I'll say it again --

CALLER: So what makes it OK for you to say the word?

SCHLESSINGER: -- nigger, nigger, nigger is what you hear on HB --

CALLER: So what makes it --

SCHLESSINGER: Why don't you let me finish a sentence?

SCHLESSINGER: Don't take things out of context. Don't double N -- NAACP me. Tape the --

CALLER: I know what the NAACP --

SCHLESSINGER: Leave them in context.

CALLER: I know what the N-word means and I know it came from a white person. And I know the white person made it bad.

SCHLESSINGER: All right. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Can't have this argument. You know what? If you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry out of your race. If you're going to marry out of your race, people are going to say, "OK, what do blacks think? What do whites think? What do Jews think? What do Catholics think?" Of course there isn't a one-think per se. But in general there's "think."

And what I just heard from Jade is a lot of what I hear from black-think -- and it's really distressting [sic] and disturbing. And to put it in its context, she said the N-word, and I said, on HBO, listening to black comics, you hear "nigger, nigger, nigger." I didn't call anybody a nigger. Nice try, Jade. Actually, sucky try.

Oh, my. Dr. Laura said "sucky".

I do wonder what the point is of dropping in to a website's comment section, calling everyone racists, and running off again.

And as for Dr. Laura, she reminds me of those comic strips you still find in some newspapers that look like they were drawn in the 40s. You are always surprised when you see them because you think that the strip had been cancelled years ago. (I think in a few years, that surprise will be extended to the existence of the newspaper itself)

In other words, the response is more a "she still around"? then any sort of horror.

Danube of Thought

From The Economist:

WHY, asks a Democrat leading a training session for fellow activists, doesn’t “Yes we can” work as a slogan any more? “Because we haven’t,” a jaded participant responds. Progressives, as bedrock Democrats like to call themselves, are despondent. The election euphoria of 2008, when their party secured heavy majorities in both chambers of Congress and Barack Obama won the presidency with ease, has deflated so rapidly that analysts are now diagnosing on the left an affliction they ascribed to the Republicans back then: an “enthusiasm gap”.

Read the whole delicious thing here.

Well, in your case, what does reason tell you? That the majority of folks who post here are racists? Hm, then I would think you'd publish something of theirs, rather than lard up the thread with the rantings of a fading talk show host....

Also, do you believe racism is the reason people have become so quickly disenchanted with Obama?

This is your chance to try to engage with people of a different point of view. Take advantage of the opportunity -- it might sharpen your own thinking up.

Jim Ryan

Ah, yes, leftism. Of Sanger eugenics and the destruction of the black family fame. You'd lash out, too, if you had such a dismal history.

When leftists feel that pounding sense of depression and self-loathing too keenly, they pretend for a while that conservatives are racists. This helps them feel as though there is someone more despicable than themselves and the moment of self-righteousness releases endorphins which kill the pain for a while. Afterwards, the gloom returns. They try to suppose that conservatives hate gays, but that hardly has any analgesic effect at all. It's a hopeless case.

It's fun for conservatives to watch the spasms of twee self-righteousness, though. It's like a circus geek show.

LUN means clicking the poster's name will take you to the described link. Clicking tea anyone's name under her post took me to Adam's video which is very clever and well done. Also, it's LUN..linked under my name.

Captain Hate

My respect for Appalled continues to grow; subtly nailing trolls with the pawn-fu. Very impressive. In the distance I can hear the clicking of psychotropic drug containers and the screams of "Make it stop".

Racial Purity

"Hm, then I would think you'd publish something of theirs"

If they had something of their own worth commenting on, I would be glad to. But their screed is merely the offal of others. The real story is encased in their personal and political denial. Some have awareness of their racial prejudice, but recognize the political reality of such a position. Others have no such personal awareness, and simply rationalize on a conscious level, what they feel is something other than racism.

Why do you spend so much time and energy currying favor from those who disrespect

Apparently typhuspad ditches anything with the word "seman tic leo" in it.

At least the wingnut whine-fest over the Park51 mosque plan lays to rest any lingering possibility that identity conservatism is a philosophy, rather than a state of mind.
Note that the linchpin issue for conservatives is entirely emotional. They openly embrace that freedom of religion should be curtailed merely in order to safeguard their emotional state from being threatened, or really, from any threat of being threatened.
Is the mosque's sin that it would pose a threat to the safety of New Yorkers? Nope, no evidence whatsoever of that. Is it that the mosque is a zoning problem? Nope, it's prefectly in line with the area's plan. Does it cost too much? Nope, privately funded.
Indeed, not only do the wingnuts admit, but they celebrate, the notion that their fragile psyches lie at the center of their view of Muslims and freedom of religion.
Many simply cannot fathom that their offense is utterly irrelevant. The fact that the presence of Jews, for example, in Mecca would be deeply offensive to many Muslims, is indeed irrelevant to the question of whether or not Jews should be permitted to enter Mecca. Of course they should be permitted in, even though it is utterly undeniable that the very many Muslims will be deeply offended by their presence. It is simply and natural and rational to see that there is no real offense that a Jew could make simply by being present in Mecca.
Exactly the same applies to the mosque. The fact that some who mistakenly blur the obvious distinction between the Muslims who attacked on 9/11 and the Muslims who opposed those attacks are now offended is utterly irrelevant because their aggreivement has no basis in reason or fact. It is their own emotional problem, regardless of how deep or vociferous the political and/or religious culture behind it is.
And then there's the idea that the problem with liberals that disagree is not simply that they have the wrong idea or the wrong facts, but that they "preen." Yet again, wingnuts acknowledge that the primary issue for them is how the disagreement makes them feel, not the facts or reason behind them....

Captain Hate

Why do you spend so much time and energy currying favor from those who disrespect
