Note that the over-spending on education is not done with loans from China, Saudi Arabia or "some other wealthy nation".

(And WTF? What happened to the days when we were THE wealthy nation? Thanks, Democrats!)

steve

since the rise in public indebtedness is offset by the rise in private saving.

And not only that, the Treasury would be borrowing from Americans, not those troublesome Saudis and Chinese.

NK

STOP STOP STOP the madness. You treat this stuff as if Barry O knows WTF he's talking about when it comes to finance or policy. It's painfully obvious he doesn't and doesn't care to educate himself. He only knows what Axe or some other flunky hands him to read at the next photo-op. This became so clear when the HCR reform nonsense was going on. Barry would say the most demonstrably false things about the Bill--- even the Legacy Media knew it was false. Why?-- he really didn't know what was in the Bill. All he knew was that the gigantic expansion of the Medicaid entitlement was in the Bill. That's what he wanted, his bottom line... make whitey pay for lots more Medicaid. Barry is still a Medicaid hustler from the Southside. The rest is PR.

In loony liberal lingo, tax cuts are "spending" and tax hikes are "investments".

I'm still reeling over the idea that the money spent on education comes from nowhere, while the government has to borrow just to not confiscate from working people.

bgates

If Republicans want to extend tax cuts on people who provide the goods and services their fellow citizens find most valuable, a naive static analysis says that would decrease federal revenue by $70 billion per year.

The 2011 budget estimate for the Department of Feducation is $71 billion.

A solution suggests itself....

Janet

From Tom's linked article - "...kind of life that I would want to lead – being my brother and sister’s keeper.”

"Am I my brother's keeper" is from Genesis 4
From Answers.com - A saying from the Bible's story of Cain and Abel. After Cain had murdered his brother Abel, God asked him where his brother was. Cain answered, “I know not; am I my brother's keeper?”

So Obama's big favorite Bible quote is from Cain? The guy who murdered his brother?...great....

bgates

$700 billion to give tax breaks to the rich

I don't know how we're supposed to be able to afford tax increases. The BEA says the personal savings rate is around 6%. That means Americans are already dealing with expenses that are nine point four times household income*. And somehow he wants us to pay more? Insanity.

*Annual savings rate of 6% implies annual spending rate of 94%. By extending the dollar amount over ten years without saying that's what I'm doing, which is how Obama got the $700 billion figure, I derive a total for expenses of 940% of annual income.

Janet

and he doesn't keep his brother or his Aunt. Obama should say, ...kind of life I would want to lead - making the citizens of Massachusetts be my relative's keeper.

DebinNC

I wish someone would ask Obama if to differentiate between tax breaks, tax cuts, and tax credits. I think "break" is a focus-grouped word to denote something unfair or undeserved, but what's fair about sending tax credit checks to folks who don't pay taxes?

WaPo from Obama today: "While the United States "is still predominantly Christian," he said, "we have Jews, Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, and . . . their own path to grace is one that we have to revere and respect as much as our own."

That's ridiculous imo.

Rob Crawford

That's ridiculous imo.

Isn't it stunning how the left has gone from "religious freedom means being able to slander, defame, and desecrate anything, anywhere, anytime" to "how DARE you object to their beliefs"?

If ACT-UP can break into a church during mass and commit vandalism as "protest", you'd think expressing discomfort with some of the more violent aspects of Islam would be acceptable...

DebinNC

and he doesn't keep his brother or his Aunt

Janet, that's a great point. I hope Clarice will work that into a CP.

MarkO

The more he blathers, the better for sane Americans. Let him talk non-stop. He's just not that smart. Did I mention he's a liar? Yes. I did.

Janet

their own path to grace is one that we have to revere and respect as much as our own."

That statement makes all beliefs nonsense. If a belief is wrong, do I have to revere & respect it? I will not.
Individuals should be treated with tolerance, but not their beliefs if their beliefs are wrong.
A long ago letter to the editor stated it well...making the point about the difference between tolerance & acceptance.
This same point comes up for me with discussions of homosexuality.

Anyway, all religions can't be right because they all teach something different. That is just a stupid statement.

Walter

Since you mention Clarice's pieces, I would note that Taranto goes after Instapundit's wife in his current piece. No respect for anyone, I tell you. Where will the madness end?

(1) "The normal objection to "tax cuts for the rich" is that it will be saved rather than spent, thereby failing to stimulate the economy."
(2) "But of course, if it is saved then the tax cut is self-financed, since the rise in public indebtedness is offset by the rise in private saving."

- -
[1] This objection is entirely misguided. Savings support investment and business development, and create much more economic opportunity (jobs and GDP) than consumption spending. (I don't assume that you support that objection.)

The mantra is "70% of the economy is retail spending". Another view is that 30% of the economy is savings and investment. An increase in savings is the basis for increasing the production of consumer goods at lower prices. Consumer goods are real, continuing income.

People do not prosper because money moves around or stops moving around. The money is the result of an efficient management of resources and labor to produce what people want (can pay for). Building more houses did not make our society rich, because many people couldn't pay for them. The government got us into a mess because they encouraged everyone to buy a house, no matter what.

Then, the government soaked up resources to bail out the banks that implemented government policy to make sub-standard loans, the loans that couldn't be paid back.

--> Cargo Cult Economics

- -
[2] Self-financed? Private saving does not balance public debt, unless we grant the government the right to seize those savings at any moment to pay off the public debt. I don't support that power.

No mention of how Muslims, atheists, or Buddhists have to regard Christianity.

It's ok for Obama to split the country into "we" and "they", because he only does it to lecture Christians and/or white people, so it's not divisive.

God, how I'd love for anybody who comments here to get half an hour on national tv with this buffoon.

Quite a few sirens in downtown Madison this afternoon. I understand O-boy is coming to a downtown hotel for a small meet-n-greet before addressing the hoi polloi.

For those of you not familar with Madison's geography, downtown is an ithsmus with only a few streets that allow passage from east to west. It will be interesting to see just how bad the traffic is screwed up as a result of street closures.

They are making a big deal about not having a visit by a sitting president in 50 years but that needs to be qualified. It is the university campus has not had a visit. O-boy was here last Oct and visited an elementary school.

Obama says:"No tax cuts for Millionaires and Billionaires" ......OK extend the tax cuts to $800,000.00 single and $937,500.00 joint filers.

Cecil Turner

Hey Clarice, no idea how I managed that one, but the original has your addee on it, so I obviously must've fat-fingered the "reply to" button. Sorry about that.

Janet

You know that whole Cain quote made me mindful of a similar discussion here at JOM. It was in August '09 when Obama said, "We are God's partners in matters of life & death."
and when Obama said the reforms aim to carry out one of God's commandments - "I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper."

So in August Hit says ""Obama likes the cut of Cain's jib" Death Panels?....'Brother's Keeper' Panels." Hahahahaha!

Obama also used the line in his 2004 Dem Convention speech.
"A belief that we are connected as one people. If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief — I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper — that makes this country work."

Clarice

That's okay, Cecil. Next time I hope the subject's a bit saucier..*wink*

Clarice

janet, if Obama were any fuller stuffed with carp, he'd be a gefillte fish.

Rick Ballard

Janet,

I believe that "brother's keeper" goes into the Bro BO Brainfart Collection as a conflation of Cain's question and "least of my brothers" (Matthew 25:40). Given that BOzo left the least of his brothers living in a tar paper shack in Kenya as an example to us all, I must say that there is an inadvertent element of honesty to this particular screw up.

Extraneus

God, how I'd love for anybody who comments here to get half an hour on national tv with this buffoon.

Which potential candidate will be able to hit one of those "tax cuts are 'unfunded' government spending" or "profits are overhead" meatballs out of the park in the most devastatingly sarcastic and biting manner during the next round in 2012?

The man deserves to be utterly humiliated, and I think that would best be handled by a woman -- preferably an attractive one with a cheerful smile, but I'm perfectly willing to consider other batters.

Rob Crawford

I figure Obama goes on and on about "my brother's keeper" because it's one of the few Biblical lines he knows. I doubt Wright quoted that much scripture in his sermons, and I doubt a guy raised with the oogy-boogy anthropological view of religion (and contempt for believers) bothered to read the Bible on his own.

He might even think that using the phrase is a way of "reaching out" to the poor benighted bitter clingers.

Btw, since all the local news was abuzz with the worst ex president having been taken to Metro general (where they stow all the alkies and crackheads) with a tummy ache, I subsequently found out that he was to appear at a bookstore about 5 miles from me where they showed a crowd of quislings and lowlifes with sad weepy faces because Dhimmi Earl wouldn't be making the trip. If I'd have found out about it earlier and he'd appeared, I might have asked for him to sign a copy of Laura Ingraham's Obama Diaries with the inscription "From the worst ex President for a book about Teh One that will take my title".

Buford Gooch

Walter, I hope your comments about Taranto are tongue in cheek. Otherwise, I guess you just don't get his humor. He was not "going after" either Clarice of Mrs Insty. He was making light of their subject matter, not of them for presenting it.

squaredance

well, that carp he spreads in the "back yards of America" is swallowed hook, line and sinker by a whole lot of folks, including those folks in that "middle class backyard". Much more than you would imagine. It isn't that he is a "moron", it is that he is a Marxist demagogue. He would not say it if there where no takers. He is speaking to the Left, and their are a lot more of them than people here imagine.

The whole "brother's keeper" is just a case in point. The hypocrisy and the misuse of this is truly amazing, but people just eat it up. That religious leaders do not stand up and once and denounce this sort of misuse--by misusing this scripture he is literally putting words in God's mouth--shows how worn out our moral fiber is.

This is Class War stuff right out of the 1930's. This is unalloyed COMINTERN propaganda.

One would laugh, except for the fact that they are actively recreating those conditions.

The whole matter is the political equivalent of pornography. But do not forget that he seems to have a solid 35% to 40% of the country behind him.

This how degraded we have become. He knows who he is targeting with this agi-prop, and that demographic does not come to JOM. We now have a President that openly lambastes "The Rich" on the campaign trail in front of middle class Americans in their back yards. It has come to that. I do not think that we have seen such brazen anti-capitalist, anti-property behavior from the government since the early days of the New Deal. There is nothing funny about this--nothing at all.

Just what does "no tax cut for billionaires" mean. Well it means that they are somehow illegitimate that they somehow are avoiding their proper punishment or duty by not paying through the nose to keep a parasitical and self appointed elite in the pink and in charge. This is how Obama and his wrecking crew think. This is how they justify their thievery and corruption. Again, it is not that they are "morons", it is that they are corrupt and immoral. Quite a few seem to agree with them.

Just when did this become a mainstream platform in this nation, at least main stream to the point that a POTUS can self-righteously shout it from the roof tops? Have we heard this out of a sitting President since FDR?

The question is a simple one: Are there enough of us left and do we have enough time to turn the tide.

I tell you, if this Nov. is close, even if the dems lose it will be an extremely bad sign.

We are at a crossroads. We must renounce all that Obama and the Democrats embody, and we must do so decisively and unambiguously.

It is a sign of great weakness and decadence that we are at this juncture in the first place. We have little room for error now.

Ignatz

Old Lurker

Sorry if this has been said...speed reading and all.

What disgusts me about this tax cut stuff is how easily they have established the narrative as if it's about a new tax cut for the wealthy vs the middle class, when as we all know he's trying to arrange things so taxes go up for the rich and not for others. (we already paid the political price for the original cut...how do we have to pay politically twice? Allowed to be cast as they do, it's as if they are not increasing taxes while unemployment is in the high teens. Even the unread probably know not to raise taxes in a recession.

PD

Maybe he meant that he wasn't born into it.

Well, that'd distinguish him from no one, because no one is born into it.

Either way, someone should ask him why he chose to be a Christian. What are the odds the word "Christ" would be part of the answer?

This is what he said:

“I’m a Christian by choice,” the president said. “My family, frankly, they weren’t folks who went to church every week. My mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew but she didn’t raise me in the church, so I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead. Being my brothers and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me, and I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings, that we’re sinful and we’re flawed and we make mistakes and we achieve salvation through the grace of God.”

Old Lurker

PD, I had no say in my Baptism. But at Confirmation I was allowed to re-up by my own choice. By re-asserting my faith each week, I renew that by free will.

RichatUF

OL-

I'm not sure how valuable having that narrative is. We'll see but the Obama road show seems more out of Axelrod's crook re-election handbook than anything else.

The Dems knew since they first took Congress in Jan 2007 that those cuts would expire and did nothing. Why would anyone be surprised that with the clock winding down and the election not going their way they'd rather be entertained by a Hollywood C-lister then get to work? Also, I think that a nontrivial number of Dems want all the cuts to expire and are using the election calander and the deficit commission as the figleaf. brb

PD

The Dems knew since they first took Congress in Jan 2007 that those cuts would expire and did nothing.

They knew this when they were enacted because they were the ones that wanted the expiration date.

Jane

they have established the narrative as if it's about a new tax cut for the wealthy vs the middle class, when as we all know he's trying to arrange things so taxes go up for the rich and not for others.

We ought to say that Obama is purposely destroying jobs - because he hates the jobmakers so much.

RichatUF

One other point, I think that it is in part personal. Obama would rather let the Bush tax cuts expire than give a Bush economic policy legacy an Obama seal of approval. It in a way explains his hostility to the Constellation program as well (Renyold's cheerleading for Obama's policy of sending US astronauts up on Russian rockets for an as yet agreed to price notwihtstanding).

jeff

but won't extending the "middle class tax cuts" cost us 3 TRILLION dollars over 10 years ? How can we afford that ?

They are, of course, so obtuse that one may not even obliquely either insult them or rouse within them even the fishiest curiosity. All one may do is disagree with them and then forebear their sniffling and pique, and marvel at the predictable uniformity of it all.

Those who imagine that there is room left for "unity" in this nation across the board do not know our "liberal elites" at first, or even second hand.

But, were it another man's nation, these would be a scenes of great and booming hilarity.

And it's "in terms of the kind of life" he "would want to lead." The kind of life he would want to lead. Not the one Jesus wants him to lead.

It's all about Barry, as usual, and it's a very secular-sounding response. I get the impression Obama's commitment to Christ is about as strong as my commitment to the Sunday New York Times.

Like Rob Crawford I also suspect he doesn't know much about the Bible, and only trots out the "verses" he thinks he knows - which he misapplies in my view. I think it's creepy every time he says "brother's keeper" because as Janet pointed out, when Cain said that in response to God's question, he had just murdered Abel.

Of course the rest of the MFM won't retract the story. But you can read about it here at HotAir.

Ok Porch; I was only reporting on what teh Tam said.

hit and run

I told the kids a copule nights ago about a pilot who'd be carrying some unique cargo from Alaska down to the midwest. Asked them to guess what it was...

"Boxes!"
"Legos!"
"Firewood!"
"Books!"
"Halloween costumes!"
"Ice!"

"Nope. A bear"

"A bear? Won't it hurt him?"

"No. It's a friendly bear. It'll be in the co-pilot's seat."

"Really?"

"Just kidding. It'll be in some kind of cage. He'll be safe."

"Is it Mr. xxxx?" (we have two pilots in the neighborhood)

"No, it's one of my blogging friends. He's daddy."

::puzzled looks::

"But . . . but . . . you're daddy."

"Kids,I think you're old enough now. There's something I need to tell you....."

Sorry Cap'n, I just meant it as an fyi in case you (or Tammy) hadn't seen the update.

Captain Hate

No need to apologize, Porch; thanks for the correction

I just met him a couple of months ago, and I've liked him since the day I met him. I told my friend and she got his number and started texting him and she told him he should ask me out and she gave him my #.
