E Jones

"In sum, the letters Aramark received are not intended by the SSA to contain “positive information” of immigration status, and could be triggered by numerous reasons other than fraudulent documents, including various errors in the SSA's NUMIDENT database.   Indeed, the letters do not indicate that the government suspects the workers of using fraudulent documents.   Rather, they merely indicate that the worker's earnings were not being properly credited, one explanation of which is fraudulent SSNs. This falls short of the “positive information” from the government that was held to provide constructive notice in Mester and New El Rey and held lacking in Collins.   See Collins, 948 F.2d at 554-55.   Without more, the letters did not provide constructive notice of any immigration violations."

I'm having a hard time understanding why I should care about the O'Keefe story.

No, don't bother to explain -- I just don't see how this rises to the level of planting explosives to "demonstrate" faulty gas tanks, or purposefully rigging a car's engine to bypass the electronic controls to "demonstrate" runaway acceleration, or trying to pass off Word docs as 1970's era type-written reports.

Yes, E Jones--it says so write on the no match letters which warn of legal consequences of doing anything to an employee because of the no match.

I long for the good old days, when trolls were trolls, like TCO, and spam was spam, like interracial dating site posts. The latest trollery is a peculiar mix of marginal facility in the use of pseudo inquisitive rhetoric to undermine classical liberalism with repetition of boring, foul-mouthed insults (when will they figure out that use of "teabaggers" and takeoffs thereon has lost its insult value), and the spam inviting visits to other websites is mind numbingly pedestrian (the least they could do is suggest that a date with Heidi Klum or Brad Pitt (depending on one's, ahem, "preferences") is in the offing for anyone visiting the spammer's webite).

 Ann

I heard this in the car and chuckled all the way home:

More on Stuxnet--from Legal Insurrection:
Now, a Symantec researcher has found a reference in the code to an obscure date in 1979 which just happens to be the date on which the Iranian revolutionaries executed a prominent Iranian Jew. As reported at ThreatPost:
A Symantec researcher filled in more critical details about the Stuxnet worm here, demonstrating the worm's ability to take control of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) by Siemens Inc. and disable machinery connected to them.

Liam O'Murchu of Symantec, speaking at the Virus Bulletin Conference here, provided the first detailed public analysis of the worm's inner workings to an audience of some of the world's top computer virus experts. O'Murchu described a sophisticated and highly targeted virus and demonstrated a proof of concept exploit that showed how the virus could cause machines using infected PLCs to run out of control....

As for suggestions that Israeli intelligence may have authored the virus, O'Murchu noted that researchers had uncovered the reference to an obscure date in the worm's code, May 9, 1979, which, he noted, was the date on which a prominent Iranian Jew, Habib Elghanian, who was executed by the new Islamic government shortly after the revolution.
Here is a portion of the Wikipedia entry on Elghanian:
On May 9, 1979, Elghanian was executed by a firing squad in Tehran sending shock waves through the closely knit Iranian Jewish community. He was the first Jew and one of the first civilians to be executed by the new Islamic government. This prompted the mass exodus of the once 100,000 member strong Jewish community of Iran which continues to this day.
Was this an Israeli attack with snippets of code manipulated to mock the Iranians, or a false flag operation meant to blame the Israelis?

Somewhere, someplace, someone is laughing. We just don't know who.

Rob Crawford

It took time to free the slaves? No shit? For real? Not just the race card, not an entire suit [and you know which one] but the entire deck.

Captain Hate

Rob Crawford

Now, a Symantec researcher has found a reference in the code to an obscure date in 1979...

I just don't buy the "we found this string in the code, it means 'X'" line. Some of that may be the filtering through the mass media -- I don't trust them to understand what they're told.

But most of it because the human brain is trained to look for patterns, and we all too often find them when they're just not there. Pawing through megs of binary code is a ripe environment for seeing things that really aren't there.

And if anything, clues like this point AWAY from the Israeli government. They'd want plausible deniability. That doesn't mean it didn't come from a non-governmental source, though.

Clarice, I spent two of the last three weeks trying to figure out how to speak over the network to a piece of hardware. The manufacturer refuses to release the specifications, and all I've got to go on is some incomplete code and dumps of the traffic between the vendor's tools and the hardware.

All I can swear to is how the first 18 bytes of each packet is structured.

I'm hoping we can strong arm the vendor into opening things up.

Probably an urban legend, told to me by a computer prof many moons ago:

A certain assembly-language code was written by a programmer who was fired for not putting adequate documentation in his code, and a poor slob hired to take over maintenance. This was about 10,000 lines of assembler, and there was only one comment in the whole thing. The line of code and comment:

jmp 1827 ; LVBRIP
The poor slob became obsessed with the comment, sure that if he could just figure out what it meant, then the whole 10,000 lines of incomprehensible spaghetti would become totally clear. He worked day and night for months.

Ludwig von Beethoven died in 1827.

I wonder how we could entice Typhoid Obama to visit California, Nevada and Washington in the next couple of weeks? I know he's already agreed to administer the coup de grace to Bennet in Colorado and O'Malley in Maryland but he has time to finish off a few more before November 2nd. After two years of right-wing rule, in which he has followed in the footsteps of his Republican predecessor, bailing out Wall Street, escalating the war in Afghanistan, and intensifying the onslaught on democratic rights at home, Obama sought to revive the tired and vacuous slogans of “hope” and “change” that he employed in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Kirk, Spock, and Scottie? I'm guessing Obama's charm offensive isn't working out quite as planned.

And above, I think it was on this thread, the slavery bit was in his prepared remarks at Wisconsin:

In every instance, progress took time. In every instance, progress took sacrifice. Progress took faith. You know, the slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs, they weren’t sure when slavery would end but they understood it was going to end. When women were out there marching for the right to vote, they weren’t sure when it was going to happen but they kept on going. (Applause.) When workers were organizing for the right to organize and were being intimidated, they weren’t sure when change was going to come but they knew it was going to come. And I am telling you, Wisconsin, we are bringing about change and progress is going to come -- but you’ve got to stick with me. You can’t lose heart. (Applause.) Change is going to come. (Applause.) Change is going to come for this generation -- if we work for it, if we fight for it, if we believe in it. The biggest mistake we could make right now is to let disappointment or frustration lead to apathy and indifference. That is how the other side wins. And I want everybody to be clear, make no mistake: If the other side does win, they will spend the next two years fighting for the very same policies that led to this recession in the first place. The same policies that left the middle class behind for more than a decade. The same policies that we fought so hard for to change in 2008.

If he's using it again, Obama's political staff was probably focusing grouping and polling the speech.
