The mood is edgy lacking energy. It seems contradictory, but there it is.

Sorry, for hogging the thread. I was having too much fun. See ya later.

"I just finished knitting a Japanese scarf project made in large part of micron thin stainless steel wrapped in silk..." Clarise at 3:14

Clarise,

You never cease to amaze me! What color is the scarf? It sounds beautiful.

Janet the tea-vangelist!

My husband works with someone that is also a big train fan so he pointed out this site -
Fallen Flag Railroad Photos

Tons of old photos from Railway trains/lines that have retired. Some are really beautiful.

Captain Hate

He kept saying he was the only chance they had to get funding, because the republicans would not do it - which they and we know is a bold face lie since George Bush did more than anyone.

Jane, I'm sorry I missed this before. Yes it's an obvious lie and, more importantly, I'm sure the hecklers are aware of what the facts are. He has such thin skin and, as Clarice suggests, we're about to see his glass jaw on Tuesday.

Sue

Apparently NAMBLA is a joke from Stewart's show. I have never watched it so I don't know first hand, but others are saying if you watched the show you'd get it. If I have to watch the show to get it, I don't want it.

Rick Ballard

CH,

I doubt that we'll be seeing him on Tuesday. I believe he's going to dedicate himself to sorting socks until AF-1 fires up for his flight from DC (and reality). I agree about the glass jaw - after his sedation wears off we're going to be hearing some very strange excuses pointing fingers at everybody but the fellow in the clown suit who looks back at him from the mirror.

Janet the tea-vangelist!

Apparently NAMBLA is a joke from Stewart's show.

Oh..well..yeah, I can see how that would be funny. Shout outs to the idea of older men sexually preying on young boys. What's not funny about that. Stupid me. Stewart is a comic genius. :(

Jane

I watch the show on occasion and I don't get it.

Jack is Back!

All,

What you need to know about a subject like NAMBLA being on a left-wing elitist indoctrination show as comedy is that accepting pedophilia, Islamist extremism and anti-captialism is de regiuer with the left. By making fun of it they accept it and tell their audience that it is perfectly acceptable to have that weird old guy with the clammy skin and femine hands that lives next door at your next cocktail party.

Captain Hate

I'm sure you're right, Rick. I believe the meltdown has already begun and the disconnect with reality will become even more pronounced such that even the completely in the tank shills will have to look away. It's gonna be such a high-exposure ugly self-destruction that ordinarily I'd feel sorry for the recipient; but in this case absolutely no way.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--Apparently NAMBLA is a joke from Stewart's show. I have never watched it so I don't know first hand, but others are saying if you watched the show you'd get it.--

Cat Stevens, of 'yes Salman Rushdie deserves to die' fame is another joke I don't get.
Jon Stewart apparently thinks restoring sanity includes guys who say things like:
"The musician known as Cat Stevens said in a British television program to be broadcast next week that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ”I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing.”

Is it possible for irony to be ironic or are they just a bunch of morons? I'll leave it to the reader.

Clarice

barbara, the merino wool is cranberry color which joins the black silk wrapped steel about two-thirds of the way up --the black stuff goes all the way from the beginning to end. In different colors, here is a picture of it.

Janet the tea-vangelist!

Here is another article (interview) with the Peace Train singer Yusuf Islam.

from the article - "So would you say you have contempt for a terrorist group like Hamas?

I wouldn’t put those words in my mouth. I wouldn’t say anything on that issue. I’m here to talk about peace."

The interviewer should have asked him about his views of NAMBLA...now that would have been really funny.

glenda

clarice..
'kusha...what do you not do well? I would like to request a mind-meld, please :)

MaryD

Clarice, that scarf is beautiful!

Clarice

glenda, it's really an easy pattern (simply stockinette). For some crazy reason you eep changing needle sizes all along though I can't figure out why--maybe to make the sculpting ore intriguing)My DiL's mom is Japanese born and a sculptress ..i figured she'd think this was fun.

Extraneus

“It’s absurd. We’ve lost our minds,” Kerry said. “We’re in a period of know-nothingism in the country, where truth and science and facts don’t weigh in. It’s all short-order, lowest common denominator, cheap-seat politics.”

John Kerry, ever the master at turning a phrase.

Kerry knows a lot about knowing nothing. One might say he's an expert.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--who lives in Cordelia Junction not too far from Ignatz or me--

I'll have to Google it, Doc, cause I've never heard of Cordelia Junction.

DrJ

Cordelia Junction is where I-80 and I-680 intersect. You know, taking I-80 will get you to Berkeley; I-680 will take you to Walnut Creek/Pleasanton/San Jose. There a bunch of fast food and gas stations there.

PD

Woodward's "Obama's Wars," p145.

Members of his [General Lute's] shop privately described the Obama administration in Afghan terms. "Tribes" populated the presidency, reflecting its divisions. THe Hillary tribe lived at the State Department. The Chicago tribe occupied Axelrod's and Emanuel's offices. The campaign tribe at the NSC--led by chief of staff Mark Lippert and strategic communications director Denis McDonough, both former Obama campaign aides--seemed to flaunt their personal relationship with the president and often circumvented Jones as the national security advisor. Lute's team dubbed them the "insurgency."

Found that amusing, given Obama's recent speech decrying the tribal mentality.

Chubby

If you read it literally, taking the 'we' as applying exclusively to his own tribe, it makes perfect sense

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Yeah, mapquested it. Halfway between Vallejo and Fairfield. Probably been through it a hundred times on the way to the coast or Marine world, just never actually noticed it.

Ignatz,

Nothing particular to note about it, but Enlightened lives there and commutes to the city each and every day. That puts it on my map.

I've also had my share of car fill-ups and Whoppers there.

PD

Though I see that Googling both spellings finds many references for each. Now I am filled with anxiety wondering the proper spelling. I will go with yours!

caro

Here is the kit for Clarice's scarf.Very cool.

Clarice

Thier other kits are cool, too, caro.I ordered two of them. The Japanese use an entirely different way of pattern writing than anyone else--it's all visual diagramming and actually more easy to follow than the usual European or English-American ones.

Habu doesn't bother with knitted button holes--you place the buttons on one side--spread the fabric on the other side with your fingers to fit the button and then stitch around the opening to keep it in shape.

The fabrics are fantastic, too..they even have one yarn made of recycled fishing nets; another of sterling silver.

PD

Speaking of Jon Stewart, I'm watching The Faculty. Forgot he was in it.

CNN is reporting the Dems fear a blow out in the Senate and the Meek fandango is evidence of that.

"The point that many people seem to be missing in the Florida Senate saga is that this whole mess actually has very little to do with Rep. Kendrick Meek-- it's all about a much broader fear among senior Democrats that they may be about to lose control of the chamber.

The real story is how bad the broader electoral map has gotten for Democrats. Top Democratic officials privately are getting increasingly worried they'll lose the Senate.

They've reviewed private polling numbers that suggest Sen. Patty Murray of Washington has a razor-thin lead of about two points over Republican Dino Rossi. They're also deeply worried about whether Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada can beat Republican Sharron Angle, so suddenly the "firewall" out West might be more like a crumbling brick wall."

And, they're worried about Obama's old Senate seat that the president is heading home to Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday night for a rescue mission to again help Democratic candidate Alexi Giannoulias in his battle with Republican Mark Kirk.

Thanks to that awful landscape, Democratic officials made the brutal political calculation to try to toss Meek aside, because if Crist somehow beats Republican Marco Rubio in the three-way battle, he has indicated he will align himself with Democrats.

I asked top Democratic officials if it's really worth it to try to push Meek out, even though the whole plan has now been exposed and it appears the congressman will not budge. The consensus was yes, it's worth it simply because holding on to the Senate is the Democrat's sole chance of keeping some power on Capitol Hill. It's time to tighten the seat belts. Tuesday might be even bumpier than expected.

They're running the "Republicans hate women and seniors, and would prefer them to die before the election" type ads.

And the lazy DO buy into them, like my M-i-L who's going around saying the GOP candidates hate women.

We're having a talk tomorrow.

I'm going to show her there are candidates websites and newspaper references.

She didn't know Amazon existed until three weeks ago. I have a tough row to hoe.

And sorry clarice, I have abandoned Last.fm. They wrecked it with ads between station changes (which get stuck, then no radio).

I'm curious what others have encountered.

A friend from Hyde park reports on tonight's Obama rally there:

"Wanted to let you know about the political rally at the end of my block tonight. It was held on the Midway, a beautiful park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted that served as the midway of the 1893 World’s Fair.
It was President Obama’s first rally in Chicago since the night he was elected.
The weather was spectacular—an early autumn evening in the low 60s. The crowd was in a good mood and represented a mix of folks from around Chicago, mostly black and white, not too many Latinos that I saw.
All the senior politicians were there, led by the two in close races: Gov. Pat Quinn and would-be Senator Alexi Giannoulias. All the pols, except for Mayor Daley, made speeches. Quinn, Giannoulias, Dick Durbin, etc. Nothing interesting. Just red meat to the base. That was true of Obama’s speech, too. I thought it was a good speech, although it surprised me by being as long as it was.
Anyway, the whole point of the rally was to get people fired up and get them out to vote. (Along those lines, I noticed a person in SEIU garb doing get-out-the-vote stuff outside my local supermarket this afternoon.)
So, was anything striking or unusual? Yes, two things. First, the rally was not especially big. For a rally that had lots of publicity, held in a good location, with great weather, featuring the President in his first hometown public event since 2008, the event did not have more people than a good-sized high school football game between two Catholic League teams. I would guess the crowd was 10,000 tops. If that’s all the best political machines in Chicago can turn out, with the President on tap and a well-known Rap artist on the bill, then they have every reason to fret.
Second, although the crowd was definitely pro-Obama, pro-Democrat, and very cheery and positive, they were not really super fired up. They cheered at the right spots, but not everybody participated and the yells were hardly full-throated. Again, more reasons to fret if you are a Democrat.
Earlier in the week, I heard a talking head make a wise comment. Seeing Obama travel to campuses in Madison, Wisconsin, and Columbus, Ohio, to rally the base, he said, is kind of like a Republican candidate needing to stop off in Salt Lake City to get out the vote. Not a very encouraging sign for your side. The rally tonight in Hyde Park reinforced that point."

Uh oh,

Where's Kim.

Suddenly I'm worried about Global Warming and Melting Ice Caps and the Hockey Stick and Al Gore and drowning Polar Bears and the whole bit.

Why you ask?

Because the professional weather guessers are now forecasting horrible and brutal Winter Weather for Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northern Rockies.

AccuWeather: ">http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/40785/accuweathercom-winter-forecast-2.asp"> Winter Forecast for Alaska is Brutal "This winter could also yield the latest start to the ice melt season in the Arctic."

National Weather Service: ">http://alaskadispatch.com/voices/medred/7329-brrrr-another-prediction-of-a-cold-winter-to-come"> Brrrr! Another prediction of a cold winter to come "a powerful La Nina generating cool water in the tropics could rippled into a colder than normal winter for Alaska".

When the Settled Science Forecasters start telling us its gonna' be frigid, its time to start sweating.

Clarice

Excellent, Ann.
glasater, looks like a riproaring event.

daddy

glasater,

When you blow up the far right photo in the 7th Row (the one showing the back of the guy in the maroon Union Jacket) the guy on the far left seems to be giving you a severe stare. I'm not feeling the love.

Your scarf is dazzling,Clarice. The purl bee did write out the directions for those cheaterswho don't want to read Japanese directions.

I'm afraid to ask daddy what the current status is for Joe Miller.I'm afraid Lisa studied hardball with Rahm Emanuel.

daddy

You know Ann,

Every time I look at that lower picture of those obnoxious Legislators all walking behind Nancy and her gavel, it isn't racial slurs that come to mind, but boy do a lot of the old standard salty old navy curses start rising to my lips.

 Ann

daddy,

You didn't really spend a night in jail, did you?

Because if you did, I would finally understand why criminals have groupies begging them to marry. :)

(And I will have that pic of Nancy and her tools in my head to the day I die) The pic of Hoyer with her purse is a mental keeper too. Ha)

daddy

Frau,

I have no idea.

We have no local talk radio until Monday, so I am limited by the ADN, the 2 Blogs, and the local News, almost all of which is in Lisa's back pocket. I've already voted and my mind is made up, so I basically avoid the News since I know what I'll hear, and I'd rather not listen to it.

I may get a "Go Miller" sign to wave on Election night, and I think I could get two of the small "No on Fabe" (our bad Supreme Judge up for re-election) and hang them over Pup while we stand on the street-corner.

But as for paying attention to any more local propaganda, I'm about done. "Let the die be cast."

Clarice

Thanks, frau. It is really easy. I struggled because the steel yarn is impossible to knit perfectly evenly but then I realized it is the nature of the beast and just kept going..As I look at the pics online I realize, in fact, that is the case.

daddy

Ann,

It just crossed my mind that with big Lib Joy Behar explaining that she uses the term "Bitch" as a term of endearment for her good girlfriends, maybe it makes sense then that there actually were some racial slurs exchanged in that photo, but possibly only between some of the Legislators exchanging similar Liberal "terms of endearment."

 Ann

daddy,

One last thing, I was the one that stayed up late blogging for Joe Miller on primary night. I never gave up and he won.

Heck, I am from Ohio. I have faith in Alaska. You gave us Palin.

daddy

Wow Ann,

Thanks for that Link. I just now see that 4 individuals have filed a Federal Law Suit over this Write In thing. Here is the ">http://www.adn.com/2010/10/30/1527583/federal-suit-filed-over-write.html"> ADN story, and here is the ">http://media.adn.com/smedia/2010/10/30/19/Complaint.Rudolph.Final.2010-10-30.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf"> PDF for the Lawyer's amongst us.

Of the 4 Plaintiffs, I recognize Eddie Burke. He is a former Talk Host, (hates Fagan because Burke loves Sarah), and unsuccessful running in the Primary earlier for Lt Governor. I don't believe it is untrue of me to say that he is not the sharpest blade in the knife set, and that he goes off frequently half-cocked.

Let me post this while I go try to see if any of the other 3 I recognize, or if they are Write-In candidates. The LawSuits begin.

daddy

One of the Plaintiffs, Kevin Hite, is listed as a Write-In Candidate (Non-afiliated with any Party) for Alaska US Senator. Don't know any of the rest of them except for Burke, who is a big Joe Miller supporter.

daddy

Please give Ann's link above a listen, about the local Anchorage CBS News Reporters caught on tape, concocting scenarios of how to use their CBS platform to smear and slime Joe Miller negatively prior to the Election.

It is worth keeping in mind that Fagan works for a CBS Radio Station In Anchorage. Fagan was just pulled off the air for supposedly doing something not illegal, but something over the Line in regards to electioneering (ie) using his CBS airwaves position to improperly influence an election.

I am unable to determine positively if ">http://www.ktva.com/"> KTVA Anchorage (CBS TV-Channel 11) is affiliated with ">http://www.kfqd.com/"> KFQD Anchorage (CBS Radio-AM 750), though in the headline at the top of KFQD 750, (the Radio Station), is an ad for TV shows for KTVA Channel 11, therefore I believe there is a connection. We will find out tomorrow when and if this hits the fan.

The reporters in Ann's link discussing how to smear Joe Miller work for the former, Fagan for the latter. Again, I am not a Lawyer, but if Dan Fagan is subject to immediate suspension from his CBS soapbox for what he did, I cannot imagine that these CBS reporters should not suffer similar penalties or reprimands for what they are caught on tape discussing as an option. And if their comments are found to be simply 'hyperbole or jokes," as Fagan maintains that his were, then why a double standard.

I am unable to post at Big Government but if anyone thinks this is worth mentioning or posting there, please feel free to post it.

Also, FWIW, here is a link to Fagan's Blog which has a very recent interview of Joe Miller by a Reporter for KTVA TV. I am positive this reporter, if he is not the guy making the comments, would immediately recognize the voices of the Reporters on the tape who are discussing how to smear Joe Miller before the Election. ">http://www.thealaskastandard.com/content/ktva-s-matt-felling-interviews-joe-miller"> Link.

Clarice having mentioned the subject, i feel that i ought to address the MayBee situation briefly. i'm terribly sorry that my post offended her so. if i had it to do over again, i wouldn't have posted it. if she'd addressed me directly i'd have apologized. unfortunately, she chose instead to try to enforce her disapproval through a third party--Tom--with the implied penalty that she would otherwise remove her company from parties four through x, despite the known fact that our host is loath to intervene in his comments section. i've found in my own life that trying to get third parties to disapprove for me is not an effective way to get what i want. if she's reading this, i'm very sorry and wish she'd come back, but i have no more control over that than i had over her leaving; i didn't want her to leave; i didn't make her leave; i'm really sad that she left.
