Tea Partier Sharon Angle continues to induce brain freeze in her critics. The latest victims are Tommy Christopher of Mediaite and Alan Colmes of wherever. Let's start with Mediate:
‘Man Up?’ What if Harry Reid Told Sharron Angle to ‘Act Like a Lady?’
and over to Alan:
Was Sharron Angle Sexist To Tell Harry Reid, “Man Up!”?
Oooh, those sexist Republicans! But this time we can find prudence and judgement at the NY Times:
It’s official. The bipartisan phrase of the week, hands down, is “man up.”
Sharron Angle, the Republican candidate for Senate in Nevada, hurled it at her Democratic opponent, Harry Reid, in a debate last night. “Man up, Harry Reid. You need to understand that we have a problem with social security,” Ms. Angle said after Mr. Reid defended the stability of the program.
Earlier, Missouri’s Democratic Senate candidate, Robin Carnahan, used it against her Republican opponent, Roy Blunt, challenging him on his promise to repeal health care legislation. “So I think if you want to repeal health care reform and let insurance companies go back to their worst abuses, Congressman, then you ought to repeal your own first. And man up. And do what you’re asking other people to do,” Ms. Carnahan said.
It’s also come up in Florida as the Democratic candidate for Senate, Representative Kendrick B. Meek, tussles with the independent in the race, Charlie Crist. Mr. Meek has blamed Mr. Crist for spreading rumors that he might withdraw from the race. “He needs to man up and leader up and run his own race,” Mr. Meek said.
Well, then - to answer their question, Ms. Angle sounds just like a Democrat. Don't tell her supporters!
Maybe Christopher and Colmes could dummy up.
TAKES A RIGHTY TO CATCH A RIGHTY: The WSJ adds a man-upper:
An upstate New York tea party leader said Democratic Rep. Bill Owens needed to show some gravitas and “man up” when it came to voting with Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
IF YOU'RE WILLING TO READER UP: This history of "man up" is excellent, although we are forced to endure a detour through Red Sox Nation's "cowboy up".
Thank you for reading the NYT so I don't have to.

How quickly they forget their own transgressions...
In a joint interview on a Pittsburgh radio station, Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania told conservative Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota that she should "act Like a lady."
Posted by: Bob Sacamano | October 16, 2010 at 10:09 AM
Peter Berkowitz in WSJ today diagnoses progs' failure to understand Tea Party movement. Quiz question: Is it merely an ignoramous who believes the Tea Party is just racist astroturf? Or does it take someone with a mental disorder of some kind?
VA-5: Please volunteer for or give to Robert Hurt for Congress. It looks like he's ahead by just a few points, but it's unclear. There are lots of races (hundreds, I hear!) but this one is iconic. Hurt is a rank-and-file conservative, and his opponent is a brooch on Nancy's lapel. Man up.
Quiz question: Suppose GOP doesn't take Congress, Obamacare stands, and Dems pass Cap and Trade and it also stands. How long before the stink from the rotting corpse of the American experiment became unbearable?

I remember after he'd left H & C and started in on his blog with the "who is Trig's mom?" smear, as though he was some kind of Sully wannabe. Then he was shocked and surprised at the pushback he got in the comments, and wrote a column about how he was being dumped on for simply raising an issue.
Yeah, an issue raising a charge for which you hadn't the slightest evidence, Alan, and that served no purpose to raise except as smear politics. You well deserved the scorn and derision you got, you whiny slug. Man up, indeed!

Colmes, before he left H&C, wrote an article claiming Palin's son contracted Down syndrome as a matter of Palin's prenatal neglect or something equally stupid.
I think he was trying to make a point about women need to be at home instead of working, so he dabbled into a DNA related topic, thinking it could be caused by behavior.
Colmes could never man up, his genetics will not allow that.

Suppose a company solicited funds for an $800 billion+ program which consisted of many projects, most of them "shovel ready" as in hard-hat, construction work producing real jobs and real, hard assets for the money invested.
Then suppose the CEO of said company who himself described the projects as "shovel ready" many times, declared a year and a half later to the hoodwinked investors that there really is no such thing as a shovel ready project.
Would that CEO spend more time over the next ten to twenty years of his life in federal prison or fighting interminable civil lawsuits from defrauded investors?

I loved saying loudly that it was for a Tea Party in Massachusetts. The conversation was mostly about over-regulation here in Arlington & how burdensome it is...can't get anything done without jumping through 50 hoops. Everyone in line had to listen to our conversation.
But the whole thing started with "I like your T-shirt".

I'm enjoying watching Nate Silver, Larry Sabato and Stan Greenberg unman up. They all know that BOzo has taken the Democrat Party beyond the precipice (they keep dropping bowling balls into the abyss, hoping to hear one actually hit bottom) but they just can't bring themselves to point to the Abandonate Ogni Speranza, Democratici signs hanging over polling places. Sabato, in particular, has adopted a very ladylike disposition towards politely ignoring the foul odor emanating from rotting Dem incumbents. He daintily includes directions on how to interpret the Gallup generic (which currently shows gains of +68 - the outer limit of the already exceeded anticipated spread) while proclaiming himself constitutionally unable to raise his own projections above 47. Nate points to the same Gallup analysis while edging himself up to the 50 mark.
These 'fellas' need some advice on where to shop for skirts.

Sabato, et al., could take a lesson from Pat Caddell.

I thought that Obama had used the term and variations of it since he's been out on the campaign trail.
Rick-
What I'm not getting is are they trying to give the Dems the bad news gently? It still won't change the outcome on Nov 3rd-but their might be some left that say, "I had no idea this was coming". Gallup's generic ballot typically understates the R support and overstates D support-and they currently have it as a 14 point R spread. If this is truely a wave election wouldn't 50-60 seats be a modest pick up. It seems that the media is trying to puff up the Dem gains over the last two cycles as historic, but they have one fewer seat than what Bill Clinton had in his first term.

Janet: "The conversation was mostly about over-regulation here in Arlington & how burdensome it is...can't get anything done without jumping through 50 hoops."
May I vent? Please scroll past if you don't like real estate stories. Janet knows we own some small shopping centers in Arlington. Adjacent to one was a single family home that had become a nuisance to the neighbors and an eyesore for all. The county had proven unable to enforce its laws about rats, junk, dead cars on bllocks, drug dealing and whatever. Neighbors asked my partner and me if we could help. So we bought the little house for maybe $500,000, evicted the tenant, cleared the lot, applied a fancy new exterior to the building and gutted the interior with thoughts of finding a medical user compatible with our shopping center and of service to the neighbors. The citizens and their associations settled on wanting a dentist and informed the county that that was their desire and it was supported by all near neighbors. In super liberal Arlington County, our broker found us a 1)dentist, 2) who was female, 3) who was American Indian, and 4) believed in service to the community. With all that in place, we procededed to request the required approval for "a medical use in a residential zone" (a by right exception).
Five years later, we are waiting still for the final approval from the county. The County Council, in voting unanimously to approve our request, asked us to add ADA ramps on two public sidewalks unrelated to our property, but as "a gesture" to the community. We agreed. Our engineer was required to submit $15,000 of engineering detail for the ADA ramps, and though we plan to use the county's outside contractor for the work, the county engineer has yet to approve the drawings. In the meantime, we are not allowed to pull permits to the work to the structure we need to do so the dentist can move in.
And no, we have received no relief in property taxes while these folks decide what we might do with this property.
The neighbors, though, are real happy that the mess is gone.

My Congressman is a hack by the name of Gary Ackerman. He got elected about twenty some odd years ago, and has managed to stay in office despite doing almost nothing except voting himself a raise. This year, a cardiologist, Milano, is running against him. In the last four elections, the Republican machine didn't even put up a candidate, the last opponent was a woman who financed her campaign herself.
The rumor is that Ackerman is so scared that he contacted the Milano folks and asked Milano to withdraw from the race, and then Ackerman would announce that this would be his last term, and would endorse Milano. No pollster as far as I know has questioned the safety of this seat, but you never know.

Right now Arlington is not a representative government, it is a majority rules type government. Recently an effort was made to get area representatives rather than all the seats being at-large....but it got thrown out. "What I'm not getting is are they trying to give the Dems the bad news gently?"
Rich,
I believe the intent is to keep the remainder of "the base" from staying home in total despair. The NPR Battleground Survey provides evidence that the death knell has rung for incumbents in most of the 86 Democrat districts polled. The average incumbent support among likely voters is 45% while the "I won't vote to reelect whatshisname" is at 49%.
"If this is truely a wave election wouldn't 50-60 seats be a modest pick up."
I wouldn't say 'modest'. It's not a realignment wave, like 1894 with a 130 seat shift or 1932 with a 97 seat shift. It appears to me to be closer to the 1930 52 seat shift or the 1994 54 seat pickup. I'm sticking with the same forecast I made back in March - 75 House and 8 Senate. If the Reps do get 10 Senate seats then I anticipate at least a couple of Dem Senators to develop such a deeply profound strange new respect for the Republican Party that they step across the aisle.
Posted by: Rick Ballard | October 16, 2010 at 02:49 PM
I don't have a problem with a split Congress. In fact, I prefer that neither party gets full control. It didn't work well when republicans had it. It hasn't worked at all with democrats in control. I think there are enough moderate senators that will have gotten the message if they see their fellow senators fall around them who will be more than willing to stop Obama's agenda and save themselves.

Posted by: Comanche Voter | October 16, 2010 at 08:48 PM
Clarice,
I don't think I've ever seen the current level of grim silence from knowledgeable paid commentators that we're seeing in this election. Both sides are refraining from noting the bleeding obvious in the fear of driving down turnout, the Reps because it might knock out a few wins, the Dems because it might increase the number of losses.
The Dems are also scared to death of encouraging voting because of the heavy split against them among Independents. Gallup's first ever bifurcation of the LV model into "high" turnout versus "low" turnout is possibly the single biggest indicator of a blowout that I've ever seen - and no one is even mentioning it.
It's so weird that it's getting a little silly.
