It takes three carriers to keep one deployed because of the way they operate (good description here):

The typical carrier deployment is based on an eighteen-month period: six months for predeployment exercises and "work-ups", six months deployed, and six months post-cruise stand down.
Add in unscheduled maintenance and the like, and you're looking at an average of 3 deployed at any one time (out of 11 currently, IIRC, though it'll soon go down to 10, if the Navy gets it's way and retires Enterprise early . . . and I can't see any reason it shouldn't).

DoT,

Thought you got USNA-at-Large?

Norm Lord or some one wrote a very disturbing report about the 11 carrier groups. Only have 3 carriers fully capable and deployed at this time. One of them will go Indian not necessarily for The Won but it will be there with the contingent.

Now I would really be PO'd if I heard we had Buffers running race track circuits 24/7 over Hindustan for this visit. Thank God the Navy can handle this one:)

Captain Hate

Ya know, I used to give Tweety a little bit of credit for a miniscule amount of integrity (compared to journalistic giants like Bathtub Boy and Rocky) but after listening to his snotty, unprofessionally demeaning interview with Michelle Bachmann, he's just another loser on MessNBC.

Enterprise is an engineer's nightmare. In its haste to get one built and at sea, the navy built her with six nuclear-sub reactors; all the subsequent carriers have two. I elieve Reactor Officer in a carrier is the most grueling job in the navy, and Enterprise is the most grueling of all.

daddy:

Mark Levin just interviewed Joe Miller. If you get a chance to listen to his podcast today it starts at 7:30. You will enjoy it.

*Murcowski has hired Ginsberg.
*They not only moved the date of counting the write-ins but have moved it to Juneau (For those that don't know..you can only get there by air or water)
*The NRSC (Cornyn) has not offered any help.

Needless to say Levin was screaming and Joe stills needs financial help for the lawyers it will take to review the write-ins.

Joe Miller and Renee Elmers have both requested help from prior donors, which can be given through their campaign websites. I've donated to both.

there are a total of 14 carrier strike Groups at present, of which approximately 9 are in theater at any given time.

Down in SD a few weeks back there were three carriers docked at North Island, which is rare.

We usually seem to have two off of Pakistan's coast near Afghanistan, which is a very expensive way to do it; another one or two hanging around the Gulf; the Med; East Asia; and out somewhere in the Pacific.

One of the looming realities is that we may end up with only 9 active battle groups in 2014 because of retirement and several of them needing overhauls at once. One of the rumors is that this has been preprogrammed into a downsizing of the Navy.

So far, quietly, there are talks of huge cuts at DoD. Half the Air Force inventory is over 25 years old and what we're buying for A'Stan and Iraq is useless anywhere else.

And I think Graham embraced Barney Frank once, sbw....

Jack is Back!

I did my part $25 each to Renee and Joe. Of course, I would spend 200 times that much if PDinDetroit or Pofarmer had their varmint guns train on one Cleo or whatever his stupid moniker is at the moment. What a completely clueless piece of shit - probably a professional moocher if you ask me.

Rob Crawford

Extraneus, I'm gonna need clarification on that "bomb tunnel" item.

Jack is Back!

matt,

There are a lot of carriers "surge ready" but there are only 3 deployed combat ready at this time. You don't have to believe me but check it out at Global Security or any site of your choosing. If you have information different than that I would appreciate to see it since I am getting mine from USNA retired officers who keep track of these things.

Jack is Back!

I threw in something the other day about the left's anti-intellectualism slur against all conservatives, but the willingness of some to proclaim intelligence where none appears with traditional evidence is amazing. First, Stevenson flunked out of Harvard; Kennedy had someone else write his book (although he was witty and charming); Carter claimed to be a genius and clearly overstated his brain power; Hillary was a mediocre student and failed the bar exam. Bill's law school effort and records would show a severe lack of scholarship, although he was and is much brighter than Obama. Kerry? Oh, what a dunce he really was. Remember, even GWB had better grades.

Finally, Obama. He is just not that smart. And, he's a liar. (No grades; no papers; helped on a meaningless paper; no history of any sort.)

Likely the smartest man to hold the office in the last 50 years is GHWB, and the most qualified.

Self-Awareness, much?

So jack is Back is one of the wealthy skinflints. At least he's not voting against his best interests. The rest of you...well, there's a sucker born every minute.

Boatbuilder

How the hell does Graham get elected in SC? Is there anyone from SC that can explain this? (I know that Alvin Greene got 125,000 votes, but those were Dems). I mean, don't he and DeMint have to get their votes from the same electorate?

Self-Awareness, much?

"I threw in something the other day about the left's anti-intellectualism slur against all conservatives"

Vacu-intellectual. In other words, they truly WANT to be smart but fall short.

at sea and deployed are different, Jack as you mentioned. You're of course right about the run ups, sea trials, and deployed. Doesn't count drydock/refits. Not sure if we have one in the Med these days. 3 in SD at once certainly is unusual. The Vinson is working up. The Reagan just came back. Not sure which one the third was.

JM Hanes

"Had Republicans run Castle in Delaware and establishment favorites Sue Lowden in Nevada and Jane Norton in Colorado, Lott said, Tuesday would have turned out different."

For a little a political palette cleanser:

On Monday night in a Mexican restaurant, Lowden reflected on where things went so wrong. In her view, her campaign wasn't prepared to be taking hits from the right and the left. [The irony!]

"I'm not going to second-guess it right now. That needs a week or two to sit back and reflect what we could have perhaps done to better prepare for all the money that was used in the primary against me," Lowden said.

Clearly, a sensible, strategic thinker who would have pummeled Harry into the ground:

She also gave her critics ammunition, most notably a series of interviews in which she suggested that people should barter for their health care.

Over the weekend, a poll by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Mason Dixon showed Lowden to be in no better position against Reid than the other Republican candidates, taking away her strongest talking point.

Noted in a previous thread: Angle lost to Reid, 45% to 50% which is not exactly a rout. Raese lost to Manchin in West Virginia 43% to 54% and I'm not hearing any chorus calling him the lousy candidate who screwed our chances of taking the Senate.

Danube of Thought

Nimitz and Reagan are currently home-ported in San Diego. Stennis was here, but is now in Bremerton, WA. Vinson was here but is now in Norfolk.

I am also flummoxed by the story above about building some sort of a half mile long tunnel to ">http://www.sacred-destinations.com/india/mumbai-mani-bhavan-gandhi-museum.htm"> The Gandhi Museum.

I've been there a couple times. It is simply the small Brownstone House (about 3 stories tall) where Gandhi lived when in Bombay. Not much to look at but worth walking through. Quite sparse, it had a few simple diorama's of his life, his spinning wheel, his sleeping bag and sandals, and other than that just some posted letters, of which the two I thought most interesting were copies of correspondence with Adolf Hitler and Leo Tolstoy.

This whole thing still seems to me to be an event of such immense cost and effort, that whatever supposed benefit it is supposed to achieve seems dwarfed by the risk and expenditure involved.

Peculiar isn't it that with the amazing enhancements in technology we have made over the last 20 years in being able to tele-conference with virtually anyone, anytime, anywhere on the planet, that that technology never seems to be used, and especially not by the ones who continually preach to the rest of us about the dangers to Global Warming of burning Carbon based fuels.

Cecil Turner

Personally, I'm rather happy with the outcome as is. Getting rid of Reid at the expense of getting Schumer as majority leader would be counterproductive (Schumer is a much better liar), and even outright control of the Senate would be a mixed blessing: the margin is such that nothing contentious can be passed anyway, and the Dems and the MSM would find ways to use it to blame their mismanagement on the GOP (a la 2008, where they successfully painted the GOP as responsible for being "in power" despite their control of both houses of congress and a smoking fuze trail leading from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to Frank, Dodd, Obama, et al). This way is probably better, especially with the public spectacle of the Dems' obviously flat learning curve.

Nate Silver has his sycophants bleating and repeating that Rasmussen has distorted polls and somehow influenced the elections. The NYT commenters are more shrill than those on his old blog were. A big topic was the lack of "accurate" polling of Latinos because bilingual pollsters are missing. And we all know that Latinos *belong* to the Democrats.

This comment brought back memories of alarming accounts of getting out the vote in totalitarian countries:
The difference in Nevada was the Latino vote. However, you are missing the main reason for the difference: the Culinary Union's GOTV. As the Las Vegas Register pointed out, the Culinary members were ubiquitous on the ground, identifying and moving people to vote. That same union did it 2 years ago for Obama. That same union has been doing it for more than a decade in Los Angeles where the Latino voter has identified lock step with a progressive, living wage agenda. If more of this type of disciplined, door to door work was done around the country, the Dems would win much more. THe consultants dont get it because they earn their salaries with mail and media. But even if they gave a small percentage to a real ground game like the CUlinary, the difference would be notable everywhere.

GOTV or DIE!

Thanks Ann,

That was very worthwhile to listen to.

It is big Talk Radio stuff up here how the rules for how to conduct this Write In continually change. The Lt Governor (who's entire job description is the proper running of State Elections) continually seems to change the rules; the write-in procedures were changed, what counts as a valid write-in is up in the air, when the count begins just changed, where the count begins, etc.

I don't think Joe can pull it out, but the trust in the system up here is another casualty of this lousy Alaskan Election season.

If only the repub's had ran someone else, more moderate, all these votes would have been saved.

Worse, if those losers had been elected, they'd represent a fifth column predisposed to "compromise" with the Dems' spend-another-couple-trillion-we-don't-have-just-because-we-can plan. I'm kinda hoping these elections have given the GOP a wakeup call on fiscal responsibility. But the worst of all worlds would be to have the GOP "in power" but still have the resultant coalition spending like Democrats.
