This cross-country story from San Francisco has to be true because it is too implausible to be scripted as a made-for-TV movie:
Runner Crawls to Finish to Win Title for Her Ailing Coach
By KATIE HAFNER
SAN FRANCISCO — A top runner who hits the wall. A coach with a cruel illness. A state championship at stake.
Such was the situation last Saturday when Holland Reynolds, a star runner from a small private high school in San Francisco, collapsed at the state cross-country meet and crawled across the finish line to clinch the championship for her team.
The coach is in the late innings with Lou Gehrig's disease:
At the beginning of this season, Jim Ketcham, the school’s athletic director, assembled the team and told the runners that [Coach Jim Tracy] was very sick. The news devastated the team. “Everybody was crying,” Reynolds said.
Since the start of the season, Tracy’s condition has grown visibly worse. “He’s been falling down sometimes at practice,” Reynolds said. “And he brings a chair to our workouts.”
And flash forward to the big race:
Last weekend’s state meet in Fresno took place on a rainy, unseasonably cold morning. Reynolds, who was fighting a slight cold, was unaccustomed to such low temperatures, and said she might have misjudged how much she needed to drink.
Just before the 3.1-mile race, the team did its regular cheer, then Reynolds, who is the team captain, led a special cheer for Tracy. “I think that made the team really want to win it for Jim,” Reynolds said.
At the 2.5-mile mark, Reynolds was in third place, pushing for second, among the 169 runners. “I was going to make my move,” she said, “but for some reason my legs just gave out. I was confused, and I started to slow down.”
She more or less kept it together until she neared the finish. Then:
Within two or three yards of the finish line, Reynolds collapsed, and a race official was at her side within seconds. He told her he could not touch her or help her, but to avoid disqualification, she would have to get over the finish line.
“I said, ‘Are you O.K., and do you want to finish?’ ” said Brian Weaver, the official. “She said ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘O.K., all you have to do is get your foot across the line, and you don’t have to get up, it’s O.K. if you crawl.’ ”
Reynolds started crawling.
“I was encouraging her,” Weaver said. “I said, ‘You can do this.’ She was nodding her head and crawling, and I was saying, ‘Nice and easy, don’t force it.’ ”
Tracy said, “It took over 20 seconds for her to crawl two yards.”
Reynolds said she did not remember collapsing but did remember crawling: “All I knew was that I had to cross the line.”
She finished in 37th place, with a time of 20 minutes 15 seconds, giving University the title it would not have won without her struggle over the line.
The instant Reynolds crossed the line, she was scooped up by Weaver, an assistant coach from the school and a trainer, who took her to an ambulance, where she was given intravenous fluids.
Weaver said that if Reynolds had appeared to be in immediate danger, he would not have let her continue. “I would have picked her up and carried her straight to the ambulance,” he said. “But she was able to make eye contact with me. Her body was tired, but she was mentally all there.”
And the epilogue:
Reynolds was still in the ambulance, unable to keep her eyes open, when she heard her mother tell her father they had won the championship. An hour later, her teammates were in the ambulance with her, and they gave Reynolds her medal. Within a few hours, she had recovered enough to go home. On Wednesday, she went for a 15-minute run.
ABC News has video.
NOBODY ASKED, BUT: I still like the softball story better.
This one is touching, too, about my son's former college baseball team ...

This os too weird:
Reading this brought back so many memories of my dear wife, the poetry of the launguage:
"She more or less kept it together until she neared the finish".
Then:
"Within two or three yards of the finish line, Reynolds collapsed", and an official was at her side within seconds.
"He told her he could not touch her or help her, but to avoid disqualification, she would have to get over the finish line."
“I said, ‘Are you O.K., and do you want to finish?’ ”.
--------------------------
Just re-reading that brings back so many feelings of her experience going through TSA at the airport. How touching.

Just wanted to say I am already tired of the tax argument between the Republicans and Democrats.
If the Republicans were smart, they would change the terms of the debate. Republicans bel;ieve in personal freedom and we will never agree with liberals on higher taxation rates.
SO CHANGE THE DEBATE!
If the Democrats want to pay more in taxes, LET THEM! Its not hard to change the tax forms to allow people who believe in giving more to the government to pay 10% more of their income.
This would be immediate feedback from taxpayers on their willingness to pay for bigger government.
Two simple questions added to the tax form:
DO YOU BELIEVE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE BIGGER AND DO MORE THAN ASKED IN THE CONSTITUTION? IF yes, ADD ANOTHER 10% OF YOUR INCOME TO THIS LINE AND SEND IT IN.
Do you believe the federal government should be doing less, and more power should move to the states and the people? Then add nothing on this line.
BAM, instant feedback. This would allow the 50 Million Democrats to pay more and brag about it.
In addition, when the repeal ObamaCare the should set up a privately adminstered charity fund for poor people to get help with their medical expenses, call it the OBAMAFUND. This would demonstrate the giving power of the 50 Million Democrats willingness to pay for others health needs and we would get a quaterly report on how many billion have been contributed to the fund,,,,voluntarily.

With a name like Holland Reynolds and attending a private prep school named University, are you sure this is San Francisco and not Greeenwhich, Tom? Regardless, it is pure grit and determination and harder to believe someone who has to live in the People's Republic of Insane Social Experimentation or Pelosiville as I like to call it, can have this instill in them [in school or at home].
Probably a kid who never had a happy meal:)

This reminds me of the story of President Obama, fighting against all odds, to get his health care reform bill across the finish line. The GOP hit Barack hard, but they could not overcome his intellectual firepower...he beat them down at the televised joint conference. That was his second wind.

Yeah Rick, you would think, in a semi-rational world, at some point people would adjust their expectations to the data rather than continue hoping the data would somehow magically match their expectations.
I know I had to adjust mine to the reality that this year there was little to no natural bounce off the bottom we splatted on back in spring of 09.
Here's an IBD editorial on the Fed's largesse with apparently a mere nine trillion dollars, yes thats nine with an "n", trillion with a "t" and dollars with a "d", and the cavalier attitude of the Fed toward their gamble with our money.
Here's the salient paragraph:
Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher brags to the Washington Post that "we didn't lose a dime, and in fact we made money on every one" of the foreign deals. That the U.S. government won this particular hand of blackjack with trillions of dollars of the taxpayers' money is great to know. But what about next time?
Does Dick Fisher have a spare $9 Trillion in his mattress to help us out should he crap out next time he's in Monaco and has an urge? Kinda doubt it.

If both Cheney and Palin end up running for the GOP nominaton, the prog commentary will be apocalyptic in nature. The progs won't be able to deal with two independent, savvy, classy GOP women running for the nomination at the same time. One of them running will itself produce enough prog sewer commentary to overwhelm the most efficient sewage processing operation. With both running, the intertubes will be awash with prog sewage. And I'll be enjoying the prog meltdown to the max.

Rich:

Actually, after further review,I would like to suggest to all the rich people who complain that they don't pay enough in taxes that they file their 1040s each year taking only the standard deduction. Schedule A's are unpatriotic.
We all laughed when Harry Reid suggested that paying income taxes was voluntary -- but in this sense wasn't he right? You have a very wide range of amounts you can pay in income taxes every year, depending on how you file (not to mention how you structure your income, investments, etc). All these self-righteous rich people are voluntarily sticking it to Uncle Sam by paying high priced accountants and tax attorneys to minimize the amount they pay in income taxes, while complaining that they don't pay enough.
Show me your return or shut up.

"at some point people would adjust their expectations to the data rather than continue hoping the data would somehow magically match their expectations"
Ignatz,
I believe it's more a matter of adjusting model assumptions to reflect reality. I know that aggregate income continues to fall, based upon the "real" amount of HI contributions made. I also know that upper income levels are being hit harder (at the moment) than moderate and lower income levels based upon the different rates of decline between HI contributions and SS contributions.
I also know that the BEA is doing a little jiggery pokery with their aggregate income model based upon the increasing disparity between their wages and salaries element and the amount of HI contributions being made (about $100 billion). They have jacked up aggregate income by another $90 billion through increases in imputed income for 'rent' on owner occupied housing.
The wage and salary component of aggregate income has fallen more in '10 than it did in '09. I'm rather at a loss as to how GDP can show much of an increase when borrowing and aggregate income continue to fall. I suspect that mirrors may be involved.

Gad! It looked like the first attempt my dearly departed father made when I introduced him to his first word processor: He thought it was a typewriter so he used a Carriage Return at the end of every line and indented all lines with a series of spaces.
There's gotta be a way to strip all that out and then format properly. Isn't there???

Transfer payments (ex-SS) have increased by about $1.1 trillion since Q4 07 while top line personal income has increased by $460 billion. There has also been an increase in SS payments of some $205 billion (all numbers annualized).
I suppose the correct answer to your question is "Yes, government profligacy with my grandchildrens' future earnings has definitely masked the depths of idiocy reached by Wall Street mavens extending loans which cannot and will not be repaid." That leaves aside the idiocy of much of the general population in taking out the loans but I really don't believe they knew the gun was loaded - and Wall Street mavens cash checks for what they purportedly 'know'.

If you need to convert a column of data from Excel into text -- you use that trick. That is,first you paste the excel data into Word, then you convert the table to text, and then you replace the carriage returns with commas or semi-colons as necessary. Or in my case, building boolean expressions, replace them with " OR ".

First, use the Replace Special Character menu to Find two ^p characters side by side, and replace all with something like "XXXYYYZZZ". Then replace all of the single ^p chars with nothing, then replace "XXXYYYZZZ" with two ^p chars.
(Can you tell I've had to do this a lot?)

hit, the other thing you can do with a column of data is to select and copy it, and then do a "Paste Special" and transpose rows and columns. Then if you paste the row into your text document you replace the tabs with spaces or commas or whatever.
(Of course it's easier on a mac, because there you simply copy the tab or return or whatever into your paste buffer and then paste it into the field in your Find panel.)

Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher brags to the Washington Post that "we didn't lose a dime, and in fact we made money on every one" of the foreign deals.
I'd love to see the accounting on that. Considering how many times I've heard Democrats say how well we made out on the GM bailout, I'm guessing this "didn't lose a dime" is one of those "close enough for government work" concepts.
Posted by: jimmyk | December 03, 2010 at 02:55 PM
cathyf,
Yeah, TeX is good for that. I should learn it better one of these days, but I've used troff for so long (25 years?) that it is second nature now.
Sadly, many journals accept articles only in Word, Wordperfect or TeX, so the day of reckoning is coming.
Posted by: DrJ | December 03, 2010 at 02:57 PM
DrJ, you could try Scientific Workplace. I find it almost as annoying in some respects as Word, but it is LaTeX-based and most journals seem to accept documents produced from it.

jimmyk,
I was not aware of Scientific Workplace, but I have tried a couple of graphical front-ends to TeX. To date I have simply converted the troff code to TeX (there are programs for this), and changed the remaining oddities by hand. I think I should just learn TeX (or LaTeX) and be done with it.
While we are on software and the thread is old, do you or cathyf have any recommendations for a good Windows plotting program? Right now my tech uses Excel for plotting up our lab data, and honestly is stinks for this purpose.
Personally I use grace (on a Unix VM): it works well and is free. Sadly its Windows clone has some major bugs that the publisher is unwilling to address.
Any recommendations?

The only plotting I've done has been from statistical/numerical/math programs like Gauss or Matlab. Those would be big investments just for the sake of plotting, and they might not be what you have in mind in any case. So unfortunately I don't think I have a great recommendation.
Posted by: jimmyk | December 03, 2010 at 04:01 PM
DrJ: There are all sorts of freeware programs available on most of the freeware sites that do plotting. Try this one...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuplot/
It's from the freeware site and works really well once you get the hang of it.

Stefanie,
Thanks for the recommendation. I've used gnuplot on Unix, and was not aware that it was ported to Windows. I'll give it a go!
jimmyk,
Gauss and Matlab are indeed way overkill for the intended application. I do need to get Matlab one of these days, but that would be on my computer and not the data acquisition computer.
So far I still code all of my numerical routines by hand. The next one up is a series of three coupled nonlinear ODEs with two algebraic constraints, one of which is nonlinear. When that turns into a similar set of PDEs (with a second space dimension), I'll have resort to some package. Ugh -- another language to learn!
Posted by: DrJ | December 03, 2010 at 04:23 PM
DrJ: I actually partake of lots of freeware programs when I am working - plus the nice bits of SQL and such floating around forums and other sites.
Why reinvent the wheel when others have already pimped the ride? :)

"--Tonight! What If Lennon Had Lived, at 10pm ET.--"
Double Fantasy--which had been poorly reviewed (with a number of unflattering comparisons to McCartney's solo work), sold poorly compared to expectations, and was falling off the charts--would not have received the sales boost post-shooting and would have been forgotten much sooner. John and Yoko would probably have continued to record and release increasingly awful albums of slushy pop, as did Paul and Linda, except without Paul's instinctive melodic sense and with John's painfully obsessive devotion to Yoko. eventually, like Paul, he'd have been considered an embarrassment by all except the true bitter-ender fans. alternately, there's Long Weekend 2, in which John starts drinking again, splits with Yoko, moves back to LA, and becomes the prototype of the boorish Hollywood loudmouth crossover artiste of the 80s/90s, a sort of cross between Robbie Robertson in full Scorcese and Mel Gibson in full Tequila Sauza.

I know you asked for windows graphing programs, but there is a mac one which is really nice and cheap -- DataGraph. It is on the Apple web site (www.apple.com/downloads) and it is free for an evaluation copy and only $69 to register it.
gnuplot, of course, is your full-featured option, and it runs on just about anything. Which is really nice if you tend to compute on various and motley computers, as you have only one thing to learn.

"--Tonight! What If Lennon Had Lived, at 10pm ET.--"
He and Yoko become neoconservative Reaganites devoted to free market principles and strong national security. They have a large following on the upper west side of Manhattan, so that by the 1990s that neighborhood, formerly a bastion of liberal politics, becomes as reliably Republican as Orange County California.

cathy, either stop talking baby talk or take a vacation here for a few days and show me what the heck you are talking about. Your friend the old, computer klutz.

Since we allow British Subjects to be President, maybe Lennon would have been our leader.

Hahaha...Yoko not only doesn't have the toned arms to be First Lady...she has no tone at all.

the other thing is that given John's love of unfiltered cigarettes he'd probably have been dead by now anyway.

I'm not a Yoko fan, but I liked John's songs on Double Fantasy. After having taken major time off to be a house-dad, he claimed to have been very content in that period, and I thought the music reflected that.

OK I should have come back long ago to pick up Cathy's addendum to Ext's fix of my problem. Would have saved me an afternoon of picking through a long architect's specification document (ie lots of jargon and abreviations)that had indeed collapsed into into one seamless unbroken endless mass of text after I first found and replaced all the carriage returns, and then found and deleted all the non-single series of spaces. The result looked like the universe collapsing in the nanosecond before the big bang.
And of course I could have just emailed DrJ directly but I feared he would suggest - pretty much as he in fact did and not really unfairly - using something like BankStreet Writer for DOS 3 as what I should have used in the first place. Alas it was not my document I was editing and felt I could fix it for free where my architect would bill me by the hour for fixing it...
But I repeat...you guys are great. Thanks.

Not to bad. Almost 7 hours fixing it for free. :-)

How about Weekend at Yoko's, wherein Andrew McCarthy and that other guy who never quite made it to the Brat Pack level of semi-stardom drag her sunglass adorned corpse around Long Island Sound and the Hamptons for a couple of days?

or "This Is Beatle Tap," in which The Fabs reunite (sans Ringo, who of course spontaneously combusted after recording "The No No Song") but make a reunion record that sucks and wind up playing crappy bars until Yoko gets them airplay on Japanese radio.

""Pops-
Hit looked up the address and Bush even included it in one of his State of the Union speeches: the Treasury accepts unconditional gifts to pay down the deficit
""
That's not what I am asking for, I am asking for it to be on everyones tax return. As you may be aware, you are swearing that your tax return is true and correct.
So if the liberals answer the question TRUTHFULLY, about want a bigger federal government, then they pay 10% more.
If they don't want to pay the addtl 10%, then they have to admit to lying on their tax returns.
At the end of the year the Republicans can go to the media and state TRUTHFULLY that less then 1% of Americans when asked were willing to pay more in taxes.

On Topic: give me a House of Representatives made up of 200 Holland Reynolds, 200 recently retired US military Service men and women (all ranks) and 35 small business owners, NO Lawyers or experienced politicians, I'll take my chances.
Great kid.
