If the progs are not being clever, they are totally deranged. Anyone who doesn't understand that Obama has advanced the bureaunanny state as far as it could be advanced at the moment must be deranged. It's not that Obama is failing, it's that bureaunannnyism is not the karma of a self-evident truths polity with folks who, whether or not they have ever studied the background of the Declaration of Independence, understand the vigor and self reliance that a people in a self-evident truths polity must exhibit. I hope that the Obama Administration is the high water mark of the bureaunanny state in America. If that turns out to be the case and the bureaunanny state recedes in the future, the receding will be in spite of, not due to, Obama's efforts.

That limit only applies to what is observable which is why the work on education is both so important and ultimately debilitating.

It's below the radar screen.

You actually have the same ed profs responsible for both the reading and math wars preparing a 2011 summit for new governors, especially the RGA, on how wonderful the new national standards are.

The national standards assume the US is no longer a free market economy and that the federal government controls the economy and will provide all citizens with meaningful work at a living wage.

That's why education is so important to Obama. It's the back door in without being observed.

A Carnegie report I read on the standards actually commented that the US system as a republic had always been an impediment to what was desired in federalizing education but that luckily the 2008 financial crisis had created an opening that the DoED was now able to exploit.

Wasn't it the redoubtable Ms. vanden Heuvel who, when pressed, couldn't even name her own congresscritter last year? Credentialed morons, indeed.

I know I am a broken record on this, but I can't believe people are honestly upset that the Democrats aren't going to raise taxes this year, the year they didn't even produce a damn budget
.

The left is very good at getting out their talking points and the right sucks at it. My guess is all those "honestly upset" people have no idea that there is no budget or have no clue what that means.

Pagar,

Do you honestly think it will pass. The repubs will filibuster no?

Pagar

Jane, if the Republicans hold it will not pass in my opinion-but who knows whether the Republicans will hold?
I would not have thought the bill to have the federal government take over all farming would have passed but it did.

Just for info, I just called a US federal government insurance claims processing company. The Press 1 for English has changed to press 3 for English. I was so upset I couldn't make out what was the other choice besides Spanish.

narciso

Some people ask question, but don't even understand the reason for the answer, in the LUN

macphisto

so now Assange will buy the farm, when he'd have been fine if he'd just gone with a condominium.

MayBee

The left is very good at getting out their talking points and the right sucks at it. My guess is all those "honestly upset" people have no idea that there is no budget or have no clue what that means.

I'm guessing it's two fold. Those who just want "the rich" to pay out of some weird animosity. Of course, many of them are rich, and my guess is Katrina VandenHueval will continue to take every tax deduction available to her and her trust fund.

Then there are the poorly informed, who do believe the tax cuts for "the rich" are what stands between here and fiscal responsibility.

Jane (sit on the couch or save your country)

I was so upset I couldn't make out what was the other choice besides Spanish.

"This president has a historic mandate. Just as Abraham Lincoln had to lead the nation from slavery and Franklin Roosevelt from the Depression,"

That's comedy gold, right there! Roosevelt's policies prolonged the depression. Moreover, the depression was so big because it was the bust portion of the first boom/bust cycle the federal reserve created with its easy money policies and mismanagement of the money supply. The first depression was so big because the boom part was so big (the roaring twenties). This occurred just seven years after the fed was created, after over a century of periodic but mild and short lived recessions, which were the norm when we still had sound money. Q: What does that have to do with Roosevelt? A: Roosevelt's philosophical predecessor in the "progressive" movement was Woodrow Wilson, who was responsible for eliminating sound money by way of creation of the federal reserve.

In Chicago, Peggy Noonan, the former Reagan speechwriter who coined Mr. Bush’s ‘’read my lips’’ 1988 campaign promise to resist new taxes, seemed to sum up the delegates’ feelings when she told them, ‘’I truly believe we must not lose the tax issue.’’

- Michael Oreskes article in the July 13, 1990, NYT, quoted in NRO today.

Apropos of nothing, I guess, save that Noonan is well past her sell-by date and starting to mold.

Jane (sit on the couch or save your country)

I think my favorite part of teh press conference was when he said he has accomplished everything he campaigned on - or was in the process of accomplishing that.

Cut to Jim Geraghty posted before the presser.

Guanatanamo Bay is not closed, and will not close. At least 50,000 U.S. troops will remain in Iraq through 2011. There is talk that U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan through 2014. Rendition will continue. Government wiretapping is expanded, not receded. Obama has refused to release controversial photos that allegedly show detainee abuse. The Obama administration asserts the authority to kill al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists, even ones that are American citizens, without trial. There will be no KSM trial in Manhattan; the administration now sees the wisdom of military tribunals. There have been no summits with the leaders of Iran, or North Korea, or Cuba, or Syria. (Obama met Chavez at a Latin America summit.) Obama’s Middle East peace initiative has gone nowhere, a fool’s errand considering the deep-rooted, longstanding furies and divisions in the region.

Domestically, there will be no Card Check. There will be no cap-and-trade. There will be no amnesty, no DREAM act. The man who denounced Bush’s recess appointments now uses the tool regularly. Bill language isn’t posted online for five days before signed into law. NAFTA will not be renegotiated; new trade deals with countries like South Korea are signed instead. No “windfall profit tax” will be enacted. He has frozen federal workers’ pay. His deficit commission rejected a VAT and proposed a slew of spending cuts that liberals find unacceptable.

Obamacare? The GOP is hell-bent on repealing it. If Obama loses in 2012, it’s gone.

But hey, liberals, cheer up. You got the Lilly Ledbetter Pay Act.

Faux conservative Joe Scarborough apparently readies a party switch.

Here are a few facts the president apparently does not know:

• Americans don’t favor the Republican position on tax cuts. A CBS News poll out this week shows that only 26 percent of voters favor cutting taxes for people making over $250,000, while 67 percent oppose the Republican plan. A recent AP/CNBC poll showed about the same outcome, with 64 percent of voters against tax cuts for wealthier Americans. Imagine what those numbers would look like if the cutoff was a million dollars.Somehow Obama has gone from being too liberal on the issue of taxes to being too conservative for independent and swing voters.

Hey, Joe? You're an idiot. Nobody is talking about cutting taxes, for anybody. They either go up or stay the same.

From Haaretz:

Top rabbis move to forbid renting homes to Arabs, say 'racism originated in the Torah'

Dozens of Israel's municipal chief rabbis signed on to the ruling, which comes just months after the chief rabbi of Safed initiated a call urging Jews to refrain from renting or selling apartments to non-Jews.

By Chaim Levinson

A numbr of leading rabbis who signed on to a religious ruling to forbid renting homes to gentiles – a move particularly aimed against Arabs – defended their decision on Tuesday with the declaration that the land of Israel belongs to the Jews.

Dozens of Israel's municipal chief rabbis signed on to the ruling, which comes just months after the chief rabbi of Safed initiated a call urging Jews to refrain from renting or selling apartments to non-Jews.

Signatories include the chief rabbis of Ramat Hasharon, Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, Rishon Letzion, Carmiel, Gadera, Afula, Nahariya, Herzliya, Nahariya and Pardes Hannah, among a number of other cities.

"We don't need to help Arabs set down roots in Israel," Rabbi Shlomo Aviner of the Beit El settlement, said on Tuesday. Aviner explained that he supported the move for two reasons: one, a Jew looking for an apartment should get preference over a gentile; and two, to keep the growing Arab population from settling too deeply.

"Racism originated in the Torah," said Rabbi Yosef Scheinen, who heads the Ashdod Yeshiva. "The land of Israel is designated for the people of Israel. This is what the Holy One Blessed Be He intended and that is what the [sage] Rashi interpreted."

Extraneus

This guy Scarborough is supposedly a Republican, right?

And now we have Obama, who spent two years ignoring Republicans, now deciding to throw in the towel on tax cuts before the opening bell rings. If the president of the United States really believes that he is in such a weak position that he cannot stand up to a party that wants to give tax cuts to millionaires while cutting benefits for unemployed families at Christmastime, I fear not only for the Democratic Party but also for America.
I think CH might have a few choice words about Mika's influence.
Dave (in MA)

The Dow was doing pretty well today http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/global-markets/US-stocks-close-flat-as-tax-cuts-thrill-fades/articleshow/7062715.cms>until Obozo's presser in which he vowed to continue to try to raise taxes on the 'rich'.
It fell around 100 points while he was on.

Rob Crawford

tax cuts to millionaires while cutting benefits for unemployed families at Christmastime

Who did that?

Oh, wait. NO ONE did that. No one said they wanted to do it.

In fact, the question isn't about cutting EITHER. It's about not letting taxes automatically increase because Democrats hate people keeping their own money, and about whether or not to extend unemployment benefits AGAIN.

General Sherman was saddened upon hearing that a steamboat had sunk in the Mississippi, until told that a number of reporters had gone done along with the rest of the victims. That cheered him.

Rob Crawford

"The press conference with the president became a little bit contentious between him and the press. There was something in it that the market did not like," said Scott Marcouiller of Wells Fargo Advisors.

Poor little Barack. So put upon.

lyle

Gah, if I hear anymore talk about "tax cuts for the rich," I'm going to puke. Listen, you jackasses, the "cuts" we're made years ago. Why don't you come and say, "We want to raise your taxes to a higher rate." It doesn't matter a damn thing if they happen to coincide with a rate from nine years ago. Oh, and why not also add that this would be the largest tax increase in history? Dishonest cretins.

She was battling the disease, alright. But she was conspiring with the spouse out of a thirst for political power. I think Hillary just shuddered as if someone trod on her grave.

Whoa--

Taranto's Best of the Web picks up this tidbit from TM's Katrina link:

The best indicator of how unhappy the hard left is, though, may be this passage from Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, in the Washington Post:
This president has a historic mandate. Just as Abraham Lincoln had to lead the nation from slavery and Franklin Roosevelt from the Depression, this president must lead the nation from the calamitous failures of three decades of conservative dominance. . . . This daunting project is not a matter of ambition or appetite--or even unconscious Kenyan socialism.
Kenyan socialism? Wow! The base is so unhappy with Obama that Katrina vanden Heuvel has gone birther.

My prayers go out to the Edwards' children though I feel Elizabeth was misguided in her quest for the final presidential campaign with John as the candidate. Had he been exposed and I remember whispers at the National Enquirer as early as January , Hillary would be president right now.I also recall some idea mentioned here that one of the presidential candidates had a problem that was being covered up. If only John Edwards had been faithful a few more years it would have been a less stressful time for Elizabeth at the end.

So if the SS tax goes from 6.2 to 4.2%, does anyone know if that's for both employee and employer, or are they trying to disconnect the two after all these years? If it's the latter, that's a bad sign, because it'll be difficult to increase the employee tax back to 6.2% after a year, and much easier to make the employer "match" 8.2% instead.

So JOMer's at last acknowledge that:
1. The press, including the liberal commentariat, is perfectly willing to slam Obama.
2. Far from a left-wing ideologue, Obama is a political opportunist focused primarily on surfing public opinion and forming financially beneficial alliances.
3. Stocks have rallied under Obama and the economy is indeed rebounding
4. Obama hasn't raised taxes.
5 Obama hasn't ``invited'' terrorist attacks in the way Cheney insisted he would.
