OK, I am back in Arizona. Pejman has a great piece on inflamed rhetoric which reminds me of this jaw-dropper - a Democratic Congressman who last fall said a Republican candidate for Governor should be shot has a guest piece in today's NY Times talking about civility. I kid you not.
Here is the voted-out Rep. Kanjorski (D, PA) last fall:
"Instead of running for governor of Florida, they ought to have him [Rick Scott, the Republican candidate for Florida governor] and shoot him. Put him against the wall and shoot him. He stole billions of dollars from the United States government and he's running for governor of Florida. He's a millionaire and a billionaire. He's no hero. He's a damn crook. It's just we don't prosecute big crooks."
Here he is today:
Why Politicians Need to Stay Out in the Open
By PAUL E. KANJORSKI
...
Nevertheless, even in this post-9/11 world, the shooting of Ms. Giffords was especially shocking, because it was so personal. She was hunted down far from the symbolic halls of power while performing the most fundamental responsibility of her job, listening to her constituents.
As far as we know, her attacker had no grand political point; I doubt we will ever really understand his motives. What the shooting does tell us, however, is that it is impossible to eliminate the risks faced by elected officials when they interact with their constituents.
We all lose an element of freedom when security considerations distance public officials from the people. Therefore, it is incumbent on all Americans to create an atmosphere of civility and respect in which political discourse can flow freely, without fear of violent confrontation.
Geez - someone should put Kanjorski against a wall and... read him his public statements. And the Times editors might want to reflect on just who they are turning to for advice on creating "an atmosphere of civility and respect in which political discourse can flow freely, without fear of violent confrontation".
And let's not skip past the Krugman connection. Yesterday Professor Hate told us this:
It’s hard to imagine a Democratic member of Congress urging constituents to be “armed and dangerous” without being ostracized...
Looks like that ostracism thing is strictly in Krugman's imagination. The same guy who called for a Republican to be shot down is now lecturing the rest of us about preserving civility - in the pages of the Times!
Cleo!
Dinner's over and mom didn't make you do the dishes.
That's great!
Too bad you forgot to clean your ears at bathtime...

No sleazy smear you guys can come up with is too outrageous to alienate the "great unwashed" as you folks like to call the independents and moderates, nor is it galvanizing your opponents into even fiercer opposition to unravel the fabulous state that is so efficiently bankrupting us.

The lack of accountability from those who claim the mantle of 'libertarian', or 'Classical Liberal', or 'inveterate swineherder', is a testament to the fractured
notion of 'freedom' you so stubbornly attach yourselves.
Freedom is a concept the Framers codified in their prose and legalisms, and , although they mistakenly assumed that future generations would utilize the Painian 'Common Sense' in their interpretations, they certainly never imagined there would be Delusionists, so perverted and obtuse they would not recognize the peril of political narcissism.
Ask Charlie from Colorado (the Buddhist) what attachment does to the individual psyche. Delusion is your mainspring. The good news is your clock is running down.
You and Palin will always be associated with the consequences of your decedent dialogue. Your History will have all the advantages seen by the Confederacy after their defeat required a nutbag to carry out their subconscious wish; Kill the messenger of all we disagree with.

I'd say that in the past 48 hours our side has won this battle (sic) in a decisive rout. The CBS poll settles the matter quite nicely.

"subconscious wish."
Dan Rather had it right, "Fake but accurate."
As best I can tell, when a crazy person has killed a politician, it was because of what the politician said, not what the constituency of the killer had whipped up. Clearly, the Tucson killer shot Giffords because of what she said and wrote. Giffords whipped him up. And it doesn’t take much to piss off a nut.
It was certainly true here. True for Lincoln. True for Kennedy. True for King.
The left can divine the thoughts of us all and our subconscious wishes. So, Ugly, what do I wish for you?
Don’t you miss shame?

Buy a Government Official an AK-47. Simple, cheap way to provide security - they get to do it themselves, just like the Founding Fathers did.
No madman, self-respecting or otherwise, would be within 1000 feet of a Government Official armed with an AK-47.

Thanks for picking the one weapon that is light enough and fragile enough that they can drop and break as they poop in their pants and run away. I understand that Giffords was brought up on guns by her father and is quite adept at riflemanship.

Love your Dobby pic, Ann...I wish Rowling would allow her books on Kindle, etc.

Scary thought -- is the press, along with Dupnik, setting the country up for another wave of conspiracy theories?
If the police and prosecution never tie the madman (NB: I'm never going to write his name; if he was hunting fame, let his name die from the world) to a "right-wing" group, will the left shriek that it was covered up?
And if they somehow tie him to some "right-wing" group, how can we trust them after the baseless claims Dupnik's made? Can we trust the evidence produced by a police force that appears to be desperate to cover up its own over-tolerance for the madman's threats?

Posted by: narciso | January 11, 2011 at 09:41 PM

Do you get the feeling this is Wellstone II? I do
Matthews is already loosening his chausses for the big event.
Posted by: clarice | January 11, 2011 at 09:45 PM
Narciso -- given, I think the guy's a nutcase and the only politics that motivated him was the bizarre froth whipped up by his illness. But given that the press and the left seem to be getting more strident the less evidence they have, will they accept the conclusion or go Truther 2: Electric Boogaloo?
Now, if there is real evidence tying him to some conservative group, and that group egged him on, then I'll be the first to call for those involved to be prosecuted as accessories and for their group to be hounded out of existence. I'm pretty sure that all of us would accept solid evidence, as distasteful as we'd find it.
But what about something sketchy? What if he was at a Tea Party rally? That says nothing about his motives, just his proximity -- he was also at an earlier meeting with Giffords, yet clearly he didn't support her.
Posted by: Rob Crawford | January 11, 2011 at 09:50 PM

They magnanimously invited Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. Politico confirms she will attend Wednesday's memorial service with President Obama.
They didn't mention seating but I believe she will be seated in between Napolitano and Holder. Can't confirm just yet. :)

The sheriff was on Hardball and I agree that the obvious question of where was law enforcement when a congresswoman was holding a forum begs to be answered. In my small town of Rocky River if more than 25 people are gathered we have police on site. Why doesthis sheriff crave his 20 minutes of fame. He should be investigating and gettingthis case ready for trial.Instead he is providing ammo for the defense.

Jon Kyl, John McCain, and Jan Brewer make at least three. Next time there's a shooting spree and Obama pays only scant attention, what will his excuse be? Is it only when federal officials are shot that attention must be paid? Will Obama claim tomorrow the expanded mental health coverage in Kill Granny might have prevented the shooting and warn that repeal will bring more killings?

Look, disagree to heart's content, but please, please, please get your Constitutional scholarship straight. None of the framers of the Constitution liked or followed Tom Paine by the 1780s. Peter King usually has his heart in the right place, but he could possibly be as stupid as Ed Markey. Consider his proposed "thousand-foot" rule for firearms. We are to believe that this Loughner dude, who was intent on getting to within four feet of the congresswoman so that he could shoot her in the head, would have been foiled if he had been required by law to keep his pistol over 300 yards away from her.

They're dumb, but they're not dumb enough to do another Wellstone.
I didn't think so until I realized this was being staged as a rally, with a title and posters. ...
... but it's true, or at least it's being reported, logo and all, in the U of A paper.

NYT reporting Dupnik's dept admitting they made several pre-massacre visits to the Loughner home--I hope we get some shots of O smooching with the sheriff before the true story of how he let this freak continue to walk the streets without reporting him for evaluation is fully known.
