Alan Dershowitz defends Sarah Palin's use of "blood libel" in a metaphorical rather than literal context. Yup, the "Blame Sarah" crowd has gotten that silly (although Jonah Goldberg thinks they have a bit of a point).
Jim Geraghty has an excellent recap of the use of "blood libel" a metaphor. Frank Rich and Andrew Sullivan go gay; here is Rich:
Frank Rich, New York Times columnist, October 15, 2006: “The moment Mr. Foley’s e-mails became known, we saw that brand of fearmongering and bigotry at full tilt: Bush administration allies exploited the former Congressman’s predatory history to spread the grotesque canard that homosexuality is a direct path to pedophilia. It’s the kind of blood libel that in another era was spread about Jews.”
WaPo columnist Eugene Robinson goes ethnic:
Ann Coulter’s column, October 30, 2008:
His expert pontificator on race was The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson, who said the Pittsburgh hoax was “the blood libel against black men concerning the defilement of the flower of Caucasian womanhood. It’s been with us for hundreds of years and, apparently, is still with us.”
And he has many others (including a defender of Al Gore against "blood libel"), but Mr. Geraghty's list does not include this use by Ken Blackwell in The American Spectator:
The Blood Libel of the New York Times
...So, let’s see an example of what the Times calls civility. A leading Thoughtful Writer for the Times is Peter Steinfels. Steinfels writes on religious topics. Here’s a sample of his work in the form of a recent book review:
A Provocative Work About the Christian Right
By PETER STEINFELS The New York Times April 25, 2009
If you wanted a book title to speed the pulse of liberal academics, journalists and politicians, you couldn't do much better than "The Democratic Virtues of the Christian Right." For many people that's a title akin to "The Winning Ways of Serial Killers."
...
I call attention, however, to that vile line: “…a title akin to ‘The Winning Ways of Serial Killers.’” If ever Rush Limbaugh’s term “Drive-by Media” applied, it applies here, in this libelous -- even blood libelous -- terminology.
Works for me.
THE MORNING AFTER: Some reviews are good; I am irked, and I bet I will find others similarly situated. I have a Post In Progress; my gist will be that President On The Other Hand seems to rebuke the lefties who laid the blame on the right, then adopts their message by calling on all of us to be more civil.
Hernandez is pretty spectacular.

Krauthammer on the Palin response:
"By the time she had the video on her website, the debate was over. The left, which had launched the accusation, had been completely defeated, ‘refudiated’ if you like, and disgraced over this. There wasn’t a shred of evidence and the battle was over. I mean, it was a rout to make the Pickett’s Charge look like a draw.”

They are clapping after hearing the names of the deceased. Does it ever happen that the well people in a society in which a large group (20%, say) have a social or psychological disorder of some kind (for example, they devote themselves to a kool-aid cult) take years or even decades to recognize that their compatriots have that disorder? Do the well people chalk it up to a "difference of opinion" or a "merely different walk of life"? Does it ever happen that the well people recognize the disorder only later, many years after the gravest damage from the disorder has been inflicted upon the society?

Death Threats Against Sarah Palin at ‘Unprecedented Level,’ Aides Say
Palin’s Video Prompts Debate Over ‘Blood Libel;’ Palin’s Office Talking to Security
By CLAIRE SHIPMAN and HUMA KHAN
Jan. 12, 2010
An aide close to Sarah Palin says death threats and security threats have increased to an unprecedented level since the shooting in Arizona, and the former Alaska governor’s team has been talking to security professionals.

The loss of these wonderful people should make every one of us strive to be better in our private lives – to be better friends and neighbors, co-workers and parents. And if, as has been discussed in recent days, their deaths help usher in more civility in our public discourse, let’s remember that it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy, but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation, in a way that would make them proud. It should be because we want to live up to the example of public servants like John Roll and Gabby Giffords, who knew first and foremost that we are all Americans, and that we can question each other’s ideas without questioning each other’s love of country, and that our task, working together, is to constantly widen the circle of our concern so that we bequeath the American dream to future generations.

The Wall Street Journal has obtained samples of Jared Lee Loughner’s online posts at forums. He joined threads dealing with hitting “handy capped” children, believed women enjoyed rape, was cynical about ever finding affection from the opposite sex and despaired of ever getting a job even flipping burgers. As the WSJ put it, at 22 he felt his life was over.

This was not Wellstone II. This was the anti Wellstone. Some here think that it was tacky with the T Shirts and all, but the larger point is that after the liberal elites spent days saying that even if Palin and the Tea Party are not directly responsible for this crime, they have created this awful atmosphere of hate that could lead to violence at any moment and.....And The One says not one word to advance that message.
