bold off?

bio mom

In 2012 the country will likely have tired of charisma, be weary of policies that either do not work or make things worse, and be especially tired of stupid speeches. Above all, it will be ready for competency: A Romney, a Daniels, or other who just seems dependable.

hit and run

You know what phrase is verboten in our new age of civil political rhetoric? The one that should never be used outside of its literal historical context. The one that if used proves its user to be ignorant of history and dumb and . . .

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/01/19/house_democrat_compares_gop_to_nazis_in_health_repeal_debate.html>Of course you do:

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) on the "lie" of government takeover of health care: "You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing, blood libel. That's the same kind of thing."

It's ok though. Cohen was using it to compare Republicans to Nazis. That makes it totally ok.

Because it just does, that's why, shut up.

Frau Pfui

Thank goodness some in the GOP are not afraid of the words "job killing." Don't they usually collapse at the first words of criticism?

If Sarah Palin is never elected to another public office, she will remain forever formidable and an important voice in our country.

(Jeez, how could Huma Abedin marry Anthony Weiner?. It's like Spanish princesses having monkeys and dwarfs to set off their beauty. I will now go sit on a chair in the corner for being snarky, but I am judging him by the content of his comments.)

jimmyk

I think the one success the MFM have had concerning Palin is making people that LIKE Palin doubt whether she can be elected.

I've tried to get people to judge her apart from her electability, but it's very hard. I strongly suspect those favorable/unfavorable polls are contaminated by that (people judging her unfavorably because of a perception that she's unelectable).

Voting based on electability is self-confirming--once people start thinking others won't vote for a candidate, they don't either, whether it's really true or not. As I've said before, that's how Republicans have ended up with the likes of Dole and McCain.

Ignatz

--You know, "insanity" is not the same thing as "stupidity." People who are experiencing delusions are not any stupider that they would be without the delusions, it's just that they are using whatever their intelligence is to make decisions and take actions based significantly upon the information contained in their delusions, which is not real.--

That's partly true, but delusions are only one part of schizophrenia, assuming, probably safely, that's what Loughner has.
People not only have delusions, such as paranoia, and hallucinations, most commonly auditory ones of voices, but they also have disordered and confused thinking. So while they don't lose any intelligence their reactions are usually nonsensical and inappropriate even considering what they are perceiving.
What's really sad is when one gets a glimpse of the underlying original person and personality which still remains but is so often overwhelmed and hidden by the disease.

Frau Pfui

jimmyk - that happened to Hillary! also. People perceived that she was too toxic and went with the totally unknown, undocumented, untested Obama. The Jackwagon opposition researchers are ready to roll out their "facts" about any Republican who steps up.

Jack is Back!

I thought about combat screw-in ear plugs at first but the more I hair and read about this guy he just doesn't seem to be one to do the sane and safe thing. That's why I went with the idea it was connected to an iPod playing some goofy heavy metal or the sound track from Zeigeist.

Porchlight

Obamacare is "job-killing" AND "granny-killing."

But for the moment, I'm just happy they're sticking with "job-killing."

Danube of Thought

"If productive taxpayers vote in liberals who then wreck the State's finances by give aways to State employees unions etc etc., then the productive taxpayer either moves or lives with the consequences"

You seem to equate "productive taxpayers" with "voters." In this state there is a vast gulf between the meanings of the two terms. CA is an exemplar of what can happen to democracy when people discover that they can vote themselves a share of the treasury. And I would much prefer to see the problems that have been visited upon me by a corrupt system be remedied by a resort to the judiciary than by moving away. i didn't cause this mess; why the hell should I move away?

In aby evevt, read Kenneth Anderson's January 18 piece on State Bankruptcies at Volokh, and the Skeel WSJ article to which it links.

I think Palin should sit out the POTUS race in 2012. She's not ready internationally speaking and it would be a waste of her grass roots organizing talents. She has a lot of power, and her endorsement of a POTUS candidate will be huge - I find it funny that the GOP is willing to alienate her followers by dumping on her as if they will vote for someone else just because.

It's already been indicated by the likes of Gingrich, Rove and others that they will play as dirty as the leftwing because they are 'askeerd of her. She should not play into their game and open herself up to the mindless little boy games.

In 2016 her prospects look mighty fine in my opinion.

Extraneus

Jeez, how could Huma Abedin marry Anthony Weiner?

I can think of a reason, Frau, but it borders on incivility. It's also related to facial hair, particularly beards.

MayBee

You seem to equate "productive taxpayers" with "voters." In this state there is a vast gulf between the meanings of the two terms. CA is an exemplar of what can happen to democracy when people discover that they can vote themselves a share of the treasury.

Amen.
Not to mention, all it takes to register to vote in CA is to sign an affidavit promising you are a US Citizen. If you don't have an address, you can draw a little map. Not exactly fool-proof.

bgates

Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing, blood libel.

I think that transcript misses a couple of quotes. I read it as, "Like 'blood libel'. That's the same kind of thing, 'blood libel'." He's claiming Palin's accusation that we have been subjected to a blood libel is another big lie.

Old Lurker

"If you don't have an address, you can draw a little map."

Surely you jest. That's a joke, right???

bgates

She's not ready internationally speaking

Compared to? Obama in 2008, Bush in 2000, Clinton in 92, Reagan in 80, Carter in 76? Or Christie, Pence, Romney, or (God help us) Huckabee today?

In 2016 her prospects look mighty fine

So you want the rest of the Republican field to sit out 2012 too?

MayBee

Not a joke, Old Lurker.

That's a high-stakes game of chicken he's playing.

clarice

In the last two elections for president the votes of Wisconsin citizens were stolen and the governor continued to veto the legislatures demand for voter ID's, insisting as he did on keeping same day, no ID voting. He's out, and bless the new governor, voter ID is at the top of his agenda.

Sometimes you have to start at the grassroots to clean up the corruption.

Ignatz

So whose rhetoric will the left blame for this abortionist murdering patients and babies alike?
Will they be as upset by seven innocent babies and a woman murdered by a 'choice' provider as they were by six people murdered by a lunatic?
Will they call for abortion control?
Will they examine their rhetoric toward abortion foes or their defense of plunging scissors into the neck of a nearly born baby? All he did was take it the next logical step and do it outside the birth canal altogether.
A pretty compelling case can be made that this guy was just listening to what the pro abortion folks have said all along, including our dear pres who couldn't even bring himself to vote for providing medical care to babies who survive the abortion, in direct contradistinction to Loughner who was only listening to the voices in his head.

MarkO

"That's a high-stakes game of chicken he's playing."

Compared to all of the above, I do prefer her to have a bit more experience than them so that all her detractors have one less talking point lie to spread about like the shit they have already spread about her

In 2016 her prospects look mighty fine

So you want the rest of the Republican field to sit out 2012 too?

If you mean Gingrich, Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty - yes please. I can't stand them.

Janet

Yeah, I read that Ignatz & wonder why we would think God would bless America while we sacrifice babies on the altar of "No Responsibility".

Or is wealth in the name of the underpriviliged served, acceptable?

MayBee

Tiller was such a hero to the left that President Obama issued a statement when he was shot.
I ask seriously- what makes this guy so different?

bgates

Compared to all of the above

What does it mean to be "ready internationally speaking", and in what sense were the names on the list, that?

If you mean Gingrich, Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty - yes please.

I meant "the rest of the Republican field". Hard to see how any one Republican's "prospects look mighty fine" for 2016 if some other Republican wins in 2012.

Janet
caro

If you mean Gingrich, Huckabee, Romney, Pawlenty - yes please. I can't stand them.

The left seems to have no fear of these and will try to choose one of them for us.

Who would you vote for,Enlightened? I agree with BioMom on the boring Mitch D.

PaulV

I think the more insane the crime is the worse the perp looks and the less likey he gets off with insanity.

Ignatz

--I ask seriously- what makes this guy so different?--

He exposes the conceit of the beasts of the field, like our dear president and secretary of state, that it is somehow NOT a murder to do precisely what this guy did while the baby's head is still in the birth canal.
And my apologies to the beasts of the field.

Jane (sit on the couch or save your country)

I go back and forth on Palin. For the longest time I didn't want her to run, but to instead choose who got the nomination. But after Tuscon, a huge part of me wants to watch heads explode on the other side.

There is a businesswoman at my Rotary club who tells me she hates Sarah Palin. So far the only reason she can come up for her hate is that Palin didn't finish out her term as governor. So in reality there is no reason.

I just can't quite understand that response.

Thomas Collins

See LUN for a discussion by Kenneth Anderson of certain issues raised by proposals to enact a federal law allowing states to declare bankruptcy, including the import of a case currently before SCOTUS that is apparently one of the Anna Nicole Smith line of cases.

This a favorite talking point of the GOP Palin bashers as well.

IMO What this translates to is: Why didn't she just stay in Alaska and behave like a good little girl - we will let her out when we need her.

For me, she is exactly what we needed to turn the elites on their ear, and the more they pile on, the more I see sour grapes and baby bibs, and balls ascending back into the abdomen.

DId Obama finish out his term as Senator?

No. And as far as I can tell, he barely paid attention while he was there.

Extraneus

I can think of no other logical reason for his mother to attack Sarah Palin, TC.

Thomas Collins

I hadn't thought of that, Extraneus, but it makes sense. Barbara Bush, I suspect, recognizes that Palin is the only one who could stop Jeb Bush from securing the GOP nomination.

Thomas Collins

By the way, Extraneus, are you functioning normally this week, or has Jets Fever got you all in a lather? :-))

The sex thread, the Sarah thread, the health thread...whatever. Here are links to three articles that should be of wide interest. They're too long to digest, so I've offered the lines below the title (whazat called?). The second and third are by the same guy, Peter Kreeft, a philosopher at Boston College and alumnus of Calvin College:

The most eye-opening book of 2010

If ignorance really is bliss, then no one should read The Closing of the Muslim Mind.

But since I prefer to know the truth, even when it is distressing, I found Robert Reilly's study of Sunni Muslim thought to be the most enlightening book of 2010.

Christian anthropology versus the Sexual Revolution

How does Christ revolutionize the Sexual Revolution? Not by turning back the clock, not by a new Victorianism, not by opposing religion to sex, but by showing their real and profound connection.

Why a Christian Anthropology Makes a Difference

It is simply impossible to agree on ethics, on how to act, on what is good and what is not, if you disagree about metaphysics or anthropology. And since ethics is unavoidable, so is anthropology.

Of the two words in the term "Christian anthropology," I assume that I don't need to define the word Christian because the Church has been doing that for two thousand years – they're called creeds. But what about anthropology?

By anthropology I mean simply a logos about anthropos, a theory or philosophy about mankind or human nature.

anduril

Sorry, goofed on the last link:

I'm enjoying all the lovin' Rex is putting on the Steelers, TC. So far, he's said the following about Rothlesberger:

"Obviously, he has the heart. He's tough; a competitor. He's anybody's kind of quarterback. Anybody would love to have that."

And about Mike Tomlin, "He's a man's man and his team plays like that."

Even the players can't say enough great things about the Steelers, they just love 'em. Unlike your guys.

Last election the GOP just did not have a strong enough candidate. Since that was over 2 years ago, I would have thought they would have culled the herd and started grooming 2 or 3 good candidates.

But no, the elites are obssessing with dumping on Palin, Romney and his secret Palin bashing cabal make me vomit in my mouth. Huckabee is just too doughy for me - I have a problem even saying President Huckabee. It sounds like Nell in the movie saying "Chickabee Chickabee" Jeb has too much Bush baggage - I can't bear another term infused with Bushitler comparisons, nor can I stand his mother who should just STFU. Newt also needs to just STFU. I would love to see Palin run, but I know she will get sucked into these dumbasses jetwash and they will willingly help the MSM destroy her.

I do like Bolton. I'm on the fence with Cain and Pence.

Only a day after a deadly attack against police recruits in Tikrit, another suicide bomber struck at a police training center in Baquba. Shi'ite pilgrims were also targeted for the second day in a row. Overall, at least 22 Iraqis were killed and 141 more were wounded ahead of Arbaeen observances, which culminate next week.

Someone remind me: Who're we rootin' for?

In connection with that, Stephen Walt offers some wisdom: Can the United States 'control' the Middle East? (Nope)

...

...the sooner that Americans dispense with the notion that we can reliably control events in far-away places, the better off we'll be.

Second, it is hardly surprising that the United States has steadily lost influence (note: not control) in the Middle East. We're hamstrung by the "special relationship" with Israel, which reduces our freedom of maneuvers, makes our rhetoric about justice and democracy and human rights look hypocritical, and angers millions of people around the Arab and Islamic world. We foolishly invaded Iraq and then bungled the job, which made us look both aggressive and incompetent.

Good Lord:

-Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) said on Tuesday that the government should require individuals to buy health insurance and cited the Preamble to the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence’s “pursuit of happiness” language and the 14th Amendment as the sources of Congress’ authority to enact such a mandate.

“I think people should be required to get health insurance. We require people to get insurance for their automobile state by state but the federal government has an obligation to encourage by law, moral persuasion, to get people to get health insurance,” Lewis told CNSNews.com on Tuesday after a House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing in opposition to Republican efforts to repeal the health-care law enacted last year.

Lifting the siege was easy because the Turks turned tail when they saw those Ma Deuce .50 caliber machine guns. The hard part was finding the time machine, but apparently Hollywood had some lying idle.

But, Sy, be careful!: There is no truth to the nasty rumor that the Knights wanted to seek supernatural assistance by offering a Black Mass, but were unable to find any virgins among the U.S. special operators.
