Charlie (Colorado)

Now never the Twain shall you meet.

I hope you're proud of yourself.

(And I agree: Twain is probably the writer I'd most like to emulate.)

(Well, except for the near bankruptcy part.)

Hit,

My response is exactly the opposite of yours. I am so damn mad at the left's outright glee that they thought they had something to get Palin on, that I can't really slow down to think about the victims - yet. And as I wrote about on You Too this morning James Clyburns "never let a crisis go to waste" moment sent me thru the roof: "Oh good, 6 dead in AZ let's exclude ourselves from those TSA requirements." I'm frying.

I'm having a similar response, Jane. What they're doing is very, very dangerous to the country, as well as wrong.

Danube of Thought

Gabriella's packing a bit more firepower than Sarah, but good for both of them.

Jane, I'm amazed but not surprised at Clyburn's sense of entitlement. What a maroon.

hit and run

Again,I'm very glad others can take up the slack where I can't (not that my slack taking up would mean anything).

But honestly I asked mrs hit and run to turn to Fox News yesterday when the news was breaking and Shep was on. It took all of what,3 or 4 minutes, and I was begging her to turn it off. Haven't turned on cable news since. And won't.

We live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by women of inscrutable intelligence. ... I want you on that wall. I need you on that wall.

All I can say to those people who go on TV and lament the hate speech, etc. etc. on the internet is - tough! Too bad!

Once upon a time in the not too distant past, the MFM and politico's and beltway elites told us the "truth" as they wanted the truth to be. They reported what they thought we needed to know. Left out what they thought we didn't need to know. They "framed" and authored the "narrative."

Now, BECAUSE of the internet, their once very easy task has become monumentally impossible. They cannot herd all the cats on the internet - all the sources of information and breaking news and investigative reporting.

Every year it gets harder and harder for any of them to be the pied piper, while we the public all play the obligingly obedient rats.

I say, halleluiah!

Jack is Back!

You all know why Mueller is there, right?

Loughner bought his gun after he passed an FBI background check. Little CYA opportunity. Did the background check include all his little run ins at Pima Community College? Or his rejection by the Army?

Rachel B

The shooter was a lefty commie coward, aka typical lib. This situation is similar to their Paul Wellstone fiasco, turning a solemn moment into a hate filled political circus. The left is looking very bad right now, and I love it!

Sue

From Meet the Sheriff site: A veteran of over 50 years in local law enforcement, Clarence W. Dupnik has served as the Sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, since his appointment in February 1980.

Born in 1936.

Harold

Well Obama did say to get in the faces of those who disagree with you and bring a gun, not a knife. Looks like the shooter was just following Barry's orders.

Jim Ryan

Yes, it's been a very bad day for lefty trolls. They found out the perp wasn't a conservative and promptly succumbed to spasms of twee rage. Their abject consternation has twisted their colons into knots which would baffle Houdini.

Meanwhile, onlookers gaped at their displays of social dysfunction, wondering whether God can possibly forgive you for using the recent murder of a nine-year-old to try to score cheap political points or whether, just by the nature of things, you burn for that.

knoxville church slaying

Adkisson targeted the church, Still wrote in the document obtained by WBIR-TV, Channel 10, "because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of media outlets."

Adkisson told Still that "he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office."

Adkisson told officers he left the house unlocked for them because "he expected to be killed during the assault."

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

Extraneus

someone with brains at Slate has figured out this is costing those hurling the baseless charges more than it's hurting their targets.

Between the disgusting vapors they got over the Constitution-reading and the obscene grasping for political advantage over this shooting, they deserve all the hurt they get and more. Just wait for the Rogue's gallery of of vitriolic incitements to violence that Rush tees up tomorrow, starting and ending with Obama's calls to bring a gun, get in our faces, and punish us.

second amendment remedies

Officers recovered 76 shells for a 12-gauge, semiautomatic shotgun inside the church. Among those shells were three spent rounds. He had carried the shotgun inside the church in a guitar case, Owen said.

"He certainly intended to take a lot of casualties," the chief said.

Adkisson is accused of killing two people and injuring seven others. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Greg McKendry, 60. Also killed in the shooting was Linda Kraeger, 61, who was visiting the church from Westside Unitarian Universalist Church.

Injured were Joe Barnhart, 76, and Jack Barnhart, 69, who are brothers; Betty Barnhart, 71; Linda Chavez, 41; John Worth Jr., 68; Tammy Sommers, 38; and Allison Lee, 42. Jack and Joe Barnhart are brothers, and Jack and Betty Barnhart are married.

At about 10:25 a.m., two staffers from Second Presbyterian Church next door, placed a large flower arrangement from their church's sanctuary atop TVUUC's sign along Kingston Pike.

"Our hearts go out to this church. This is our community. We love these people," said Julie Lothrop, assistant to the pastor.

The shooting began at 10:18 a.m. Adkisson was arrested minutes later after being restrained by church members.

So tomorrow the President has deemed a moment f silence and flags to be flown at half staff. When the Ft Hood shootings happened he bloody laughed them off.

Never let a crisis go to waste.

Oh and all those kinds words he had for Giffords - the grudgeholder and chief had a run in with her over border security a while back - so I really doubt his sincerity.

LUN

I for one would be genuinely delighted if tonight's heartfelt pleas from Keith Olbermann for everyone to beat their verbal spears into pruning hooks blossomed into an actual movement, but the sad truth is that he could have said exactly the same thing about almost exactly the same people following the Oklahoma City bombing back in the Conservative rage-drunk, Hate-Radio-fueled militia-movements/black helicopter/Clinton-is-a-depraved-murderer/government-workers-are-parasites 1990s.

Rachel Maddow could and did say almost exactly the same thing about almost exactly the same people following the assassination of Dr. George Tiller.

The sad truth is that Hate is the Right's Ring of Power. They're never going to give it up, because they know the minute they do -- the minute they're no longer allowed to pretend that Liberals are evil, freedom-hating fifth-columnist monsters who are dragging America into a Marxist abyss on the secret orders of our Kenyan Usurper Overlord -- their whole ideology would implode...

...they would never win another election...

...and tens of thousands of powerful, well-remunerated insiders from Rush Limbaugh to David Gregory who depend on that hate for their daily bread would suddenly have to go out and find honest work.

Danube of Thought

Can anyone imagine what sort of right-wing madness must have seized the mind of Leon Czoglosz? Worse yet, the nascent Bircher Gavrilo Prinzip?

Oops - Parent #1 and Parent #2 are only joining Mother and Father as parental choices on Passports per WashPo:

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Saturday that Clinton had not been aware that the terms "mother" and "father" would be stricken from the consular birth reports and passport applications when she signed off on broader changes to the documents last year.

"She has directed that the relevant forms retain to the existing references to 'mother' and 'father' in addition to the designation 'parent,' " Crowley said. He said her decision would ensure that the documents are as inclusive and informative as possible

I gave $150 and a BJ for those goddam percocets. Gone. Then, the perp turns out to resemble me in profile. You have no idea how angry that makes me. All I have left is to pretend that the Klan were conservatives. That and showing up drunk out of my mind at strangers' funerals. Hey, it's a hobby. Jane the hostage taker

NBC News just reported the killer has links to far right groups, with no specifics or mention of other political leanings.

It's hard to believe that just because conservatives laugh about killing innocent men, women, and children for sport that anyone would believe we were serious.

It should be plain as day that we're just simple minded assholes with no regard for the sanctity human life, and all that really matters to us is locking down the racist sociopath vote in November.

Just like the good Lord and Richard M. taught us to do.

anduril

larry, not knocking your Hornady rounds, and there are excellent reasons for going with a 9mm. Just saying that the bigger and heavier the round the more damage done and the less critical is shot placement. When you're talking about that many people shot, getting them care quickly is critical, and getting wounded by a smaller lighter round, while awful enough, is preferable to "more substantial" rounds. Obviously the rounds he was using were plenty effective enough to kill six people. I was thinking about the wounded--a millimeter difference can be the difference in clipping an artery or not.

Jane

That wasn't me at 7:12

Specter

Use of proxys, eh? So what?

Rick Ballard

Extraneous.

This Rasmussen Party Affiliation table may explain it. The December number for the Democrats is the lowest in six years and the downward trend accelerated after their thumping in November. The damage done by the progs to the party appears to be getting worse and they're grabbing anything in sight to try and slow the slide.

It ain't gonna work while the commie is in the Oval Office.

Sue

Dear lord. The "hero" is agreeing with the sheriff. Except she went one step further and named right wing radio, republicans and television. Did you hear that Shemp? She blames your station.

anduril

Loughner bought his gun after he passed an FBI background check. Little CYA opportunity. Did the background check include all his little run ins at Pima Community College? Or his rejection by the Army?

Short answer: NO.

Long answer:

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is designed to stop someone like Cho from purchasing handguns. NICS interfaces with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Interstate Identification Index (III) to determination a person's eligibility to possess firearms or explosives in accordance with the federal law.

Who Is Ineligible to Buy Handguns

When a licensed federal handgun dealer runs a background check on a potential handgun buyer, the NICS system returns information on individuals who:

Dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

Are unlawful users of or addicted to a controlled substance.

Have been adjudicated as a mental defective or been committed to a mental institution.

Are illegal or unlawful aliens.

Have renounced their U.S. citizenship.

Additionally, the NICS checks criminal history records to identify convicted felons and those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes. The system also checks NCIC files for wanted persons, protection orders, and deported felons.

Bringing up the NICS check is a red herring used by people who don't want ANYONE to own a gun.

BTW, I may not want Sarah to be my president, but I'd much rather have her next to me with the shotgun than Giffords with her piece. Sarah looks like she knows what she's doing.

Jim Rhoads a/k/a vjnjagvet

In my experience on this site, unusually high troll activity is a sign that the astroturfers are desperate.

anduril

Re Dupnik, he's an obvious doofuss (sp?). What happened to the accomplice he was talking about? Obvious nutcases like this kid don't enter into conspiracies--they're in their own world and a conspiracy would run counter to what they're trying to accomplish in their own twisted way. Go back and read the Ron Kessler article that I linked on the previous page which goes into the profile that this kid matches. Dupnik clearly shoots from the lip, whether or not he knows what he's talking about.

Jim Rhoads a/k/a vjnjagvet

That is unfortunate, Sue. Of course he has no better understanding of the situation than you do.

I thought the "accomplice" turned out to be the cab driver who dropped Loughner off at the Safeway? Or has this been updated to something new?

Jane

I'm sure they mean Am Renaissance whose leader has just denied it.

Maybe he just read their blog posts but didn't pay his dues for the year. I'm sure the man from the nice right-wing hate group has no reason to lie.

clarice is a great judge of character. She believed Bin Laden too, and everyone knows how well that turned out.

The Al-Qaidah group had nothing to do with the 11 September attacks on the USA, according to Usama bin Ladin in an interview with the Pakistani newspaper Ummat. Usama bin Ladin went on to suggest that Jews or US secret services were behind the attacks, and to express gratitude and support for Pakistan, urging Pakistan's people to jihad against the West.

anduril

Per the WaPo:

Typically, applicants for military service must pass a barrage of exams, including a standard aptitude test, a urinalysis drug screening, a background check for felonies and misdemeanors, and a series of medical tests that can include psychological evaluations. Military officials said failing the drug tests or lying about prior drug use or convictions are among the most common disqualifiers for service.

In Loughner's case, it appears that his drug use was the problem, and he has a prior drug-related conviction. A military official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information said Loughner failed an aspect of the drug inquiry, though it was unclear if it was the urinalysis or other questioning that blocked his entrance. It is unlikely that someone who failed the drug portion of the examinations would have gone on to have more extensive testing, such as a psychological evaluation.

Based on what I've read so far--that he was a "pothead"--I'm gonna say that he had no felony convictions. Nothing to show up in the NICS. People like this kid used to be institutionalized based on their obvious pathology.

matt

Dupnik was very high profile during the S.B. 1070 ruckus as one of the few law enforcement officers against the bill. The other was the police chief of Phoenix.

He was incredibly partisan and said some very stupid things about right wingers etc. At a time when the facts are not known and all hell is breaking loose, one of the primary responsibilities of senior law enforcement officials is to calm the public. He failed miserably in this.

The illegal flyway runs straight from the Mexican border through Tucson and thus Dupnik is the single most important law enforcement officer in the region as his jurisdiction runs 80 miles south of town. He is a major part of the problem, not the solution.

Jack is Back!

Anduril,

How many guns do you own and have registered?

I have several and I have bought them from different venues - gun shops, military, shows, private treaty. What you say is what is written in the regs but is not necessarily the way it really works. Are you able to pass that background check?

Jane

Comedian Frank Conniff tweeted: "Hey, Sarah Palin, hows that hatey, killy, reloady, crosshairsy thing working out for ya?"

anduril

Per Powerline:

More evidence of his lunacy is rapidly piling up, such as the emails that were given to the Washington Post by a student in one of Loughner's college classes. The emails start on the first day of class, in June of last year:
One day down and nineteen to go. We do have one student in the class who was disruptive today, I'm not certain yet if he was on drugs (as one person surmised) or disturbed. He scares me a bit. The teacher tried to throw him out and he refused to go, so I talked to the teacher afterward. Hopefully he will be out of class very soon, and not come back with an automatic weapon.

This student's observations of Loughner continued in the same vein. On June 10:

Class isn't dull as we have a seriously disturbed student in the class, and they are trying to figure out how to get rid of him before he does something bad, but on the other hand, until he does something bad, you can't do anything about him. Needless to say, I sit by the door.

And on June 14:

We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon.

As I say, we used to institutionalize people like this.

Janet

I've been waiting all day for Frank Conniff's take on all this.
