I can not imagine living in a state where union pimps determine whether one can work there.
That's not entirely true. I live and work here, and I've never belonged to a union. Even when I was a UW-Madison, I was Academic Staff, which wasn't unionized. (It might be now, I suppose. There were various failed attempts to get a union going while I was there.)
Looks like the Governor has the cards and he is playing them. (From NRO)
In a press conference tonight, Gov. Scott Walker called the union concessions he was seeking a “modest request,” although he conceded that asking for them was “a bold political move.”
And he would like the Democratic state senators — who are currently holed up in a hotel in Illinois so that a vote on the relevant legislation cannot be held — to come back to Wisconsin
“I’m calling on the members of the state senate to show up and do the job that they’re paid to do as well,” said Walker. “They don’t have to agree with everything we propose, but they should on behalf of the people who pay their salaries show up to work.”
He also acknowledged the thousands of protesters who have been flooding the state capitol this week.
“Certainly, the thousands of people here and outside the capitol have every right to be heard,” said Walker. But I want to make sure that not for one moment are their voices drowning out the voices of millions of taxpayers all across the state of Wisconsin.”
But he defended requiring government employees to contribute nearly 6 percent to their pension funds and nearly 13 percent to their health-care plans, saying that the pension contribution was equal to the national average, while the health-care contribution would be only half of the national average.
Walker said the only alternative would be layoffs of 10,000 to 12,000 state and local employees.
He also said he would not back down on the legislation banning most collective bargaining rights, stressing the importance of allowing state and local leaders to have flexibility in negotiation with government workers.
I love this guy. I think we should start calling Governor Scott Walker.......... SkyWalker

PD: When my son was in middle school, he brought home an essay test where he scored an A++ on it. I was shocked. The paper was full of adverbial clauses standing as sentences. The spelling was so atrocious, I had a hard time even understanding the subject of the paper.
I took it to school and confronted the teacher. I told her it was nice to have my son get such a high grade, but I was sending him to school to actually learn something and it was obvious this paper was garbage. Her reaction was one of surprise at my take on the paper. She defended the grade by saying, yes the spelling was bad, the grammar was worse, but his content was so compelling he deserved the A++. My answer to that was, how can you tell, it reads as gibberish. She said I expected too much from my child and from the school. Too much? I asked. Yes, she said, her job was to encourage, not be the grammar and spelling police. My answer, well whose job is it to teach these things if not the teacher's. She punted and told me I would have to take it up with the principal.
My son tests way above average in IQ, but he is still the world's worst speller. He is like Narciso when it comes to his reservoir of facts in areas of his interest and he is a good writer except for the spelling. When I showed him how to use spell check on the computer, he said it was the best thing he ever learned.
I think Hillary would be more than happy to get out from under this failed administration. It probably turned out far worse than even she thought possible. Remember her New Hampshire tear fest? Well all her fears have been realized with the incompetus Obamas.

3) Along with # 1 and #2, they have no real understanding of how the left actually operates, or are only just now starting to understand it.
4) They do not understand the nation ss it is now constituted.
5) Some here do not wish to have their somnolence shattered by plain speaking of the truth.
Folks here mischaracterize me because they cannot properly characterize the pickle we are in (or even understand their own impulses and characters). To be clear: They do not understand the world that they live in.
What we have going on here is truly ghastly. It is reminiscent of the early stages of the rise of the Maoists in China or the Marxist Leninists in Russia. More close to home, these are exactly the sort of tactics an stratagems employed by Chavez, Castro, Allende and Peron. and they are being applied with at least as much intensity as they were by these vipers.
We just have a hard time recognize this for the simple fact that we live in a more affluent society and the approach has been heretofore most cleverly concealed. It is not "sort of like", or "mildly similar"--it is exactly like these prior (and devastating) political fronts. They are using communist front organizations, youth organizations, labor organizations and corrupted political parties, media and processes to stage a communist coup.
Make no mistake: What we see here is classical Marxist-Leninist and Maoist "direct political action" and it is quite planned and coordinated. The nature of this planning and coordination is straight out of the playbooks the Soviet and Comintern direct political directorates (that would be organizations like the KGB). In the broader historical view, there is absolutely nothing new about this other than the fact we have never before seen this so brazenly and openly enacted on American soil.
There is nothing funny about it. From the thugs block entrance to the legislature, to direct action in the street, to actually having legislatures leave the state (and making "demands" no less), to The POTUS openly getting involved on the Marxist Leninist side, we are in completely new territory so far as American history goes. This is sedition. This is treason. This is lawlessness.
We have become so inured to this and become so weakened and supine that these outrages scarcely register with us at all now, but at no prior point in our history would our nation not have been anything but wholly shaken and angered by these contretemps and outrages.
Mark my words, far worse is yet to come.
If the GOP in places like Wisc. and Ohio back down, or the electorate is bullied, heaven help us all. But even if the GOP and the electorate hang tough, we can expect everything that we have seen in the last century from the international left visited on the Republic.
You ain't seen noting yet. Our future hangs in the balance.
squaredance, honey, we love you - hair on fire and everything.
That said, while you are really very good at pointing out the disasters and the catastrophes and the dire circumstances, you are usually a little bit lacking in here and now solutions.
We feel your pain, and, yeah, your hysteria. Believe me, we do!!! Plans of action - realistic and strong plans of action - would also be helpful.
Walker won't back down, just like he never backed down in Dem turf in Milwaukee. The electorate has his back so strongly that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal editorial page has backed his plan two days in a row. Local TV news flipped their spin between the 4:30 and 5:00 broadcasts -- the local fight is over whatever Old Big Ears does next. The desperation has failed here.
I am afraid there will be violence. The atmsphere is already thuggish. I think if there is Obama will rue his intemperate remarks. No beer summit will resolve this jiveass move.
If things continue to build and the Governor seeks federal assistance will Obama refuse to send in marshalls and troops?
The Governor has the Wisconsin National Guard at his disposal and under his command. I believe he has the authority to mobilize the militia as well.
I don't want Fed troops in Wisconsin under the Kendonesian commie's command at all. There are plenty of able bodied Wisconsin citizens who will be happy to respond to the Governor's call to restore order.
Clarise, violence may be the only card Obama has at this point. WI outside of Milwaukee and Madison are very red-state down to earth people. A million hit the woods to hunt deer every fall. Violence on behalf of Govt workers will not end well for unions. I pray that they understand this.
Jim, according to the article in your link, it was Sessions who said that, not Geithner. The idea of Geithner tearing anything tougher than toilet tissue is pretty amusing.
I think you may be projecting a bit onto Timmy. I agree it was a bit surreal, but he seemed to be saying, "Yes, this is our plan, it's ugly, but now it's your job to come up with something better." Translation: "We're don't have the cajones to do anything tough, we're going to make you take the political hits."
For my part, I'm really outraged, and I think this is one our side can't afford to lose. These people's sense of their permanent right to the taxpayer's money is disgusting to behold, and I'd love to see a bunch of them get lais off.
That's how I understood the smirking tax cheat as well. Sessions did a good job of stepping on TurboTimmy's punchline but that's what he was trying to say.
Insty linked a badger14 blog that listed some steps that can be taken. Forcibly bring them back to the capital (and capitol?)and recall seem to be the first 2.
I'm still looking to see if the governor can fire if the unions are engaging in illegal sick outs and other work stoppages. Lay off 5% of the state work force for every day the Dems don't show up.
So the Obama Administration is abdicating on the budget, an issue that his Sec of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have said is a national security issue.
Yep, it's more or less, "It is essential that we solve our fiscal problems and get the deficits under control. It's time to make tough decisions. Um . . . You guys go first, ok?
I'm sure they think that the Republicans will fall on their faces by making unpopular cuts, but just as in Wisconsin, I think (hope?) the public mood has really shifted.
RichatUF
One thing we can always predict and count on is that Obama will vote present and he will not show leadership.I saw the clip of Geithner and for his willful inability to try ro resolve this deficit fiasco he should resign. Better yet, he should never have been confirmed. Our Senate's ability to advise and consent is severely compromised. He was totally involved in the 2008 financial meltdown picking winners and losers-Disgusting.
True. Maybe their GPS could get scrambled. I don't get why they think hanging out in IL is going to help.

He was ass deep in the AIG bailout (and the stinky original Wachovia sale to Citi) and before he was part of the group that tried to throw some arms around the credit derivatives market. Winning The Future?
Today, the Obama Administration's de facto drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico was once again struck down in Federal Court. U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman granted a preliminary injunction requiring that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) act within 30 days on five pending permit applications from Ensco.
Wouldn't the best tactic for the legislature be to revoke certification of any teacher engaging in the walkouts? Firing is too cumbersome and beyond the reach of the legislature (or governor) but amending the certification rules certainly isn't. They could make it a "moral turpitude" issue - something that will stick for a long time.
Why don't the republicans in Wisconsin's legislature just mosey on over to where the dems are and call the quorum there? Where does it say laws can only be voted on in the state house?
Even in the midst of this budget crisis, the Milwaukee teachers have held out for viagra coverage, according to the Associated Press. “The union has asked a judge to order the school board to again include Pfizer Inc.’s erectile dysfunction drug and similar pills in its health insurance plans.”
Most macabre abortion defense of the night so far: Just a little while ago on the floor, Wisconsin Democrat Rep. Gwen Moore argued that abortion was better for unplanned babies than a life “eating Ramen noodles” or “mayonnaise sandwiches.”
We ate lots of Ramen when my husband was active duty, I doubt my kids would agree with this politician.
Thanks Henry, and anyone else that is posting from the state of Wi..
Rick great idea to revoke certification, let them get a job at WM or McD's.
I believe that Missouri legislative body wants to allow the public to vote on Right to Work laws. Along that line, the Governor a Dem is against letting that happening..
I wonder if the Coward's Junket Democrat legislators are planning to submit expense reports for the tab they rack up while acting in dereliction of duty.
It's bad enough they refuse to do the job they're elected and being paid to do. If they intend to stick us for the extra expenses they run up on Bueller's Day Off, that's an outrage.
"the 14 Dem Wisconsin State Senators checked into a hot sheets motel in Illinois,.."
If I recall correctly, Holder and the DOJ are trying to prosecute Chris Christie for ordering an expensive ham sandwich while staying at a Motel 6 on Government business and paying for it with per diem.
How about we start making a colossal stink to get Holder's DOJ to immediately investigate who the hell is paying these bar tabs and gas receipts and room bills in Illinois for the delinquent Wisconsin 14?
Over here Sara it is all nothing but the riots in the Mid East....Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, etc, and a little Ivory Coast crisis tossed in for color. No word whatever on the raped Lara Logan.
CNN INternational has gone whole hog, so instead of Bahrain, it is now pronounced Bhaaaakh-rain, almost a parody of the old Saturday Night Live skit with the dimwit reporterette knowing nothing except how to ethnically pronounce the name of South American countries. CNN International is about 50 percent CNN talking heads talking about the protests, and then 50 percent CNN advertisements about how good CNN talking heads are at talking about the protests. BBC uses its excess time to talk about Soccer.
How about we start making a colossal stink to get Holder's DOJ to immediately investigate who the hell is paying these bar tabs and gas receipts and room bills in Illinois for the delinquent Wisconsin 14?
Or, more locally, here's one place to make the suggestion.
I submitted my Holder suggestion per above.
I hope plenty others make a stink about it.
In Christies case IIRC, it got down to where the DOJ were questioning what type of extra cheese he was ordering on his sandwich, so in my opinion, any way that we can legally go after these bas$%#d's, lets do it.
Jane,
Of interest, Just got an e-mail from my local Alaskan Tea Party guy, who is sponsoring an Alaskan House Bill to allow vouchers for kids to go to private schools, as an alternative and as an effort to reduce the power of our local School Board and Teacher's Union. So our Alaskan Tea Party is doing their part.

What's got 'em all up in arms over in China today is Goldfish abuse.
China Daily's front page reports on a Magician who just did a trick on National TV, wherein he commanded ">http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/images/attachement/jpg/site1/20110218/0023ae6962090ec7f02a18.jpg"> 2 rows of goldfish, each 3 in a row, to swim in perfect formation, 1 behind the other, and then to perfectly turn in formation left and right as his hand moved above and commanded them. An investigator has said the only way he could duplicate the trick was by "cramming magnets into the fishes mouth and then sealing them with superglue" (so the magnets don't fall out). Pita is upset, China is upset, and animal lovers everywhere are upset, yet the Magician claims he is innocent and just trained 'em well. Investigations are ongoing, but in the meantime the Magic Trick has been banned from TV.
The story heavily quotes folks saying the Judge in Florida is an extremist and that his ruling will be overturned, so it being a McClatchy story, I'm heartened and optimistic.
While we wait of the Jomo tribe to awaken, here's some interesting news courtesy Tom Bethell of the American Spectator (LUN):
I went to a small anti-Planned Parenthood demonstration in downtown Washington, only four blocks north of the White House. That was on Monday. The next day I went to a dinner on Capitol Hill for the benefit of cigar smokers. New FDA regulations threaten to put cigar stores out of business, and recently New York's Mayor Bloomberg declared that smoking outdoors is against the law. Cigars included.
What kind of a country is it where abortion is subsidized and smoking is criminalized? To say that it is a morally confused, mixed-up country is putting it mildly.
Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion chain in the country, received $363 million from the government in the last fiscal year, and performed 324,000 subsidized abortions.
Indeed, what kind of morally confused, mixed-up country has America become.
P4 Jane: We are not even close to stopping this attack on our way of life. We must fight them in the parks, fight them in the blogs, fight them at the polls and fight them with every grasp of air we have, till success is ensured. No retreat, Jane, no surrender. Fight for America's future, fight for very existence of Western Civilization.
MADISON, Wis. -- Gov.-elect Scott Walker could be headed for a clash with state unions after saying he would consider the possibility of decertifying unions on Tuesday.
Walker is seeking deeper concessions from public employee unions, who have reached tentative contract agreements with the state. He said he wants union workers to pay more for their health care and pensions to help plug a state budget shortfall.
"Anything from the decertification all the way through modifications to the current laws in place," Walker told the Milwaukee Press Club Tuesday. "The bottom line is we want to have a better ability to control what we do when it comes to wages and benefits."
The networks champion the protesters....just like they did the anti-war protesters. It is sickening...especially in view of how they ignore & vilify the Tea Party.
Will they pick a 'Cindy Sheehan' to put a face on this cause? I hate our MFM.
Good quote from Powerline highlighted by Instapundit - "...What is going on here is that the voters of Wisconsin have elected a Republican Governor and–overwhelmingly–a Republican legislature, precisely so that they can get the state’s budget under control.
What the Democrats don’t like isn’t dictatorship, it is democracy. That is why the Democrats in the Wisconsin Senate fled the state en masse–they prevented a quorum, so that a vote they were going to lose couldn’t take place. Once again, it is democracy they are trying to frustrate, not dictatorship."
Wow, this thread is still going. Heard on radio this morning:
WI Sen Leader Fitzgerald: while Dems were fleeing, bill had required three readings and debate, all that is left is the vote. The Dems ran away from the debate. While he could have the State Police roust the Dems at 3:am for a vote, now is not the right time as they are to busy beclowning themselves.
Note that 40 school districts closed at the last minute yesterday (with students at school or on buses). More today including Milwaukee Public Schools.
Speculation that the state assembly will take up the bill today, they don't need the Dems for a quorum.
There are no quick fixes to the runaway politicians. The next election cycle should solve that. Talk about handing a future opponent a great talking point. When the going got tough, so-and-so got going.
One thing I would do at the next opportunity is remove Risser's name from any and all state buildings such as the Risser Justice Center. (Risser is one of the runaway Senators, continuously elected since 1962)
Second thing I would like to do is get a manure spreader, decorate it with anti-Walker signage and take it for a spin around the Capital Square. The Protesters would cheer as they were sprayed with shit. (and it would be good for the lawn)
Hollid 'Gunny' French, of the Troopergate brouhaha, and Wielechowski, another go too anti Sarah partisan, yes, those are the authorities, I don't know about this Jost character.
A good suggestion at Hot Air:
Walker should let local homeless shelters use the office space of absentee Senators as shelter.

Rich,
Wouldn't the best tactic for the legislature be to revoke certification of any teacher engaging in the walkouts? Firing is too cumbersome and beyond the reach of the legislature (or governor) but amending the certification rules certainly isn't. They could make it a "moral turpitude" issue - something that will stick for a long time.

It's bad enough they refuse to do the job they're elected and being paid to do. If they intend to stick us for the extra expenses they run up on Bueller's Day Off, that's an outrage.

Of interest, Just got an e-mail from my local Alaskan Tea Party guy, who is sponsoring an Alaskan House Bill to allow vouchers for kids to go to private schools, as an alternative and as an effort to reduce the power of our local School Board and Teacher's Union.

Posted by: Janet | February 18, 2011 at 08:05 AM
A good local blog LUN for more info.

Scott Walker to Slo-bama, "I Won"
