That's not entirely true. I live and work here, and I've never belonged to a union. Even when I was a UW-Madison, I was Academic Staff, which wasn't unionized. (It might be now, I suppose. There were various failed attempts to get a union going while I was there.)

In a press conference tonight, Gov. Scott Walker called the union concessions he was seeking a “modest request,” although he conceded that asking for them was “a bold political move.”

And he would like the Democratic state senators — who are currently holed up in a hotel in Illinois so that a vote on the relevant legislation cannot be held — to come back to Wisconsin

“I’m calling on the members of the state senate to show up and do the job that they’re paid to do as well,” said Walker. “They don’t have to agree with everything we propose, but they should on behalf of the people who pay their salaries show up to work.”

He also acknowledged the thousands of protesters who have been flooding the state capitol this week.

“Certainly, the thousands of people here and outside the capitol have every right to be heard,” said Walker. But I want to make sure that not for one moment are their voices drowning out the voices of millions of taxpayers all across the state of Wisconsin.”

But he defended requiring government employees to contribute nearly 6 percent to their pension funds and nearly 13 percent to their health-care plans, saying that the pension contribution was equal to the national average, while the health-care contribution would be only half of the national average.

Walker said the only alternative would be layoffs of 10,000 to 12,000 state and local employees.

He also said he would not back down on the legislation banning most collective bargaining rights, stressing the importance of allowing state and local leaders to have flexibility in negotiation with government workers.

PD: When my son was in middle school, he brought home an essay test where he scored an A++ on it. I was shocked. The paper was full of adverbial clauses standing as sentences. The spelling was so atrocious, I had a hard time even understanding the subject of the paper.

I took it to school and confronted the teacher. I told her it was nice to have my son get such a high grade, but I was sending him to school to actually learn something and it was obvious this paper was garbage. Her reaction was one of surprise at my take on the paper. She defended the grade by saying, yes the spelling was bad, the grammar was worse, but his content was so compelling he deserved the A++. My answer to that was, how can you tell, it reads as gibberish. She said I expected too much from my child and from the school. Too much? I asked. Yes, she said, her job was to encourage, not be the grammar and spelling police. My answer, well whose job is it to teach these things if not the teacher's. She punted and told me I would have to take it up with the principal.

My son tests way above average in IQ, but he is still the world's worst speller. He is like Narciso when it comes to his reservoir of facts in areas of his interest and he is a good writer except for the spelling. When I showed him how to use spell check on the computer, he said it was the best thing he ever learned.

I know that JOMers get this -- the reason the left accuses the right of all kinds of racism and violence is because that is what they would do in the same situation and they can't believe that everyone does not have these same motives and behavior.

Really now, there is nothing that I ever said here that was not true in principle, or was not an obvious fruit of civilized reason, learning or practical knowledge and experience, nor have I ever say one thing that was not inline with Marxist precedent. In fact, much of what I have said here has already come true. Some here do not understand this because:

1) They have no real knowledge or understanding, either practical or intellectual, of the actual political history of the 20th century in general, and, in particular, the real and actual history of collectivism in all its form.

2) They ave never lived in a totalitarian nation of any sort, much less a communist totalitarian one. In fact, the majority here have never lived outside the country for any meaningful amount of time

3) Along with # 1 and #2, they have no real understanding of how the left actually operates, or are only just now starting to understand it.

4) They do not understand the nation ss it is now constituted.

5) Some here do not wish to have their somnolence shattered by plain speaking of the truth.

Folks here mischaracterize me because they cannot properly characterize the pickle we are in (or even understand their own impulses and characters). To be clear: They do not understand the world that they live in.

What we have going on here is truly ghastly. It is reminiscent of the early stages of the rise of the Maoists in China or the Marxist Leninists in Russia. More close to home, these are exactly the sort of tactics an stratagems employed by Chavez, Castro, Allende and Peron. and they are being applied with at least as much intensity as they were by these vipers.
We just have a hard time recognize this for the simple fact that we live in a more affluent society and the approach has been heretofore most cleverly concealed. It is not "sort of like", or "mildly similar"--it is exactly like these prior (and devastating) political fronts. They are using communist front organizations, youth organizations, labor organizations and corrupted political parties, media and processes to stage a communist coup.

Make no mistake: What we see here is classical Marxist-Leninist and Maoist "direct political action" and it is quite planned and coordinated. The nature of this planning and coordination is straight out of the playbooks the Soviet and Comintern direct political directorates (that would be organizations like the KGB). In the broader historical view, there is absolutely nothing new about this other than the fact we have never before seen this so brazenly and openly enacted on American soil.

There is nothing funny about it. From the thugs block entrance to the legislature, to direct action in the street, to actually having legislatures leave the state (and making "demands" no less), to The POTUS openly getting involved on the Marxist Leninist side, we are in completely new territory so far as American history goes. This is sedition. This is treason. This is lawlessness.

We have become so inured to this and become so weakened and supine that these outrages scarcely register with us at all now, but at no prior point in our history would our nation not have been anything but wholly shaken and angered by these contretemps and outrages.

Mark my words, far worse is yet to come.

If the GOP in places like Wisc. and Ohio back down, or the electorate is bullied, heaven help us all. But even if the GOP and the electorate hang tough, we can expect everything that we have seen in the last century from the international left visited on the Republic.

You ain't seen noting yet. Our future hangs in the balance.

Local TV news flipped their spin between the 4:30 and 5:00 broadcasts -- the local fight is over whatever Old Big Ears does next. The desperation has failed here.

Wouldn't the best tactic for the legislature be to revoke certification of any teacher engaging in the walkouts? Firing is too cumbersome and beyond the reach of the legislature (or governor) but amending the certification rules certainly isn't. They could make it a "moral turpitude" issue - something that will stick for a long time.

Of interest, Just got an e-mail from my local Alaskan Tea Party guy, who is sponsoring an Alaskan House Bill to allow vouchers for kids to go to private schools, as an alternative and as an effort to reduce the power of our local School Board and Teacher's Union. So our Alaskan Tea Party is doing their part.

I went to a small anti-Planned Parenthood demonstration in downtown Washington, only four blocks north of the White House. That was on Monday. The next day I went to a dinner on Capitol Hill for the benefit of cigar smokers. New FDA regulations threaten to put cigar stores out of business, and recently New York's Mayor Bloomberg declared that smoking outdoors is against the law. Cigars included.

What kind of a country is it where abortion is subsidized and smoking is criminalized? To say that it is a morally confused, mixed-up country is putting it mildly.

Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion chain in the country, received $363 million from the government in the last fiscal year, and performed 324,000 subsidized abortions.

Indeed, what kind of morally confused, mixed-up country has America become.

12/8/2010: Reality Check: Can Walker Decertify State Unions?

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov.-elect Scott Walker could be headed for a clash with state unions after saying he would consider the possibility of decertifying unions on Tuesday.

Walker is seeking deeper concessions from public employee unions, who have reached tentative contract agreements with the state. He said he wants union workers to pay more for their health care and pensions to help plug a state budget shortfall.

"Anything from the decertification all the way through modifications to the current laws in place," Walker told the Milwaukee Press Club Tuesday. "The bottom line is we want to have a better ability to control what we do when it comes to wages and benefits."

Wow, this thread is still going. Heard on radio this morning:

WI Sen Leader Fitzgerald: while Dems were fleeing, bill had required three readings and debate, all that is left is the vote. The Dems ran away from the debate. While he could have the State Police roust the Dems at 3:am for a vote, now is not the right time as they are to busy beclowning themselves.

Note that 40 school districts closed at the last minute yesterday (with students at school or on buses). More today including Milwaukee Public Schools.

Speculation that the state assembly will take up the bill today, they don't need the Dems for a quorum.

There are no quick fixes to the runaway politicians. The next election cycle should solve that. Talk about handing a future opponent a great talking point. When the going got tough, so-and-so got going.

One thing I would do at the next opportunity is remove Risser's name from any and all state buildings such as the Risser Justice Center. (Risser is one of the runaway Senators, continuously elected since 1962)

Second thing I would like to do is get a manure spreader, decorate it with anti-Walker signage and take it for a spin around the Capital Square. The Protesters would cheer as they were sprayed with shit. (and it would be good for the lawn)
