Obama is monitoring the Hall of Records, in Hawaii, with hopes it gets wiped out. Since you can’t have a beer with an earthquake he will call Mother Nature a bully and send protesters.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Back in Madison for a minute. Check out this video. How out of touch is this Dem. Senator? Loudspeaker phone calls, I think I've seen this scene before...in the Soviet Union and other totalitarian countries. Very cold warish.

I love the part where the girl is excited that Rachel Madow is proud of what they are doing and the country will thank them. Big rally on Sat. with 200 tractors and maybe Springstein. Woohoo!

Jack is Back!

Don't know if anyone is interested in the science of seismology but the USGS has a great site that registers every tremblor. Note that this EQ is really a series of EQ's and it probably isn't over. Note the expotential differential depending on time and distance. What is fascinating (to my engineering mind) are the parameter loadings for each tremblor. The ground acceleration peak speed must have set a record also. If I was in Japan or the "ring of fire" (Indonesia, Malaysia, PNG, Australia and New Zealand) I would be ready for more. Japan had to know they were going to get something after what happened to Christchurch. LUN

Jack is Back!

Sorry but I may have misinformed in the prior post by use of wording. It is a series of EQ ground waves, not individual tremblors but there are after-shocks that contribute to certain pickups of the magnitude and shake parameters. But the data is pretty interesting as you can plot out the ground wave from the initial EQ. Still at the LUN

Sara-

The only email addy I have is to Pal2Pal.

And I sent one.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Jack: They had a big quake a few days ago in Japan. I forget the size, but over 6. This quake has set off aftershocks that are coming at a rate of every 5 to 15 minutes. The damage here in Calif. from a 7.4 quake would be astronomical and just one of the aftershocks of this 8.9 was that big.

clarice feldman

Panama is also expecting to be hit with a tsunami but later than the rest of the West Coast. My son's b-i-l lives south of Osaka near the inland sea and it seems to have avoided most of the damage.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Got it. I'll answer later after I get a couple hours of sleep. I'm starting to get punchy and my eyes are beginning to cross. :)

Jane (sit on the couch or save your country)

We also need to hear from Man T ran- because he's probably got warnings too.

PD

And he's still be able to make his 11 AM tee time.

Wearing comfortable shoes, no doubt.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

A good friend of mine has a house on the mountain overlooking San Jose, Costa Rica and a condo about 4 hours a way at one of their best surfing beaches. He messaged me this morning that he is loading the car and heading for the beach condo so he is ready to hit the waves when they get to Central America.

Melinda Romanoff

Jane-

Looking into that.

Danube of Thought

Around here they're telling the surfers to get out of the water.

Henry

Sara, they are nuts! I like the "street by street, door by door" promise on the recalls. Hmmm, hose or water balloons?

Otherwise Wispolitics has Walker signing the bill in a public ceremony today (time tbd),and Walker rescinded the 1500 layoff notices.

The head of WEAC issued a go to work today and wait instructions notice, and Milw Teachers got an email setting up a midday walkout.

We missed DebinNC in handing out kudos last night -- she rolled up her sleeves and found a lot of links. Thanks, Deb!

That Japan quake and sunamis are a bigger deal than what's going on here today. I hope all JOM folks in danger get to safety.

PD

FOX reporting that Obama *has* been communicating with the PM of Japan. I will give him credit for that.

PD

Milw Teachers got an email setting up a midday walkout.

That's bolster their support among taxpayers who are already sick of their antics ... that the taxpayers pay for.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Henry or PD: Have you heard anything about a student strike? I heard them talking about it yesterday or the day before.

PD

Just heard a commercial that Waiting for Superman is available on DirecTV Cinema.

Hmm ... Checking my position in the queue for a copy at the public library: 321 of 373. Looks like they have 23 copies available.

Glad there's that much interest!

Pagar lives in Panama.

daddy

Unbelievable. Can the Republican Leadership folks really be this stupid?

John Cornyn and other Republicans in Washington, D.C. are trying to recruit Joe Scarborough to run for Senate as a Republican in Florida.

PD

Sara, I heard about a walkout at 2 PM.

Melinda Romanoff

hit-

Uh, no.

Oh, and did cathyf send you anything this AM?

clarice feldman

My son was pinged by a friend in Tokyo who said the aftershocks lasted about 5 minutes. My d-i-l's brother's fine..the damage seems to be on the northern Pacific coast.

Ignatz

--Milw Teachers got an email setting up a midday walkout.--

Yeah, Hugh Hewitt yesterday was ridiculing a tape of revolutionary vanguard maximum, and I do mean maximum, leader Michael Moore proclaiming a day-of-rage walkout today, at 2:00PM, on a Friday afternoon, by high school students.
What's that half an hour before the bell rings? I suppose all three seniors in the state that are still in class at 2:00PM on a Friday can march out. Not exactly storming the Bastille, Mikey.

Good Grief! Big Government has a post up (LUN) that the unions are calling in the UN to end all right to work laws. Apparently some UN agency ruled against NCs law in 2007.

daddy

How is it possible that Kornyn and these guys can have learned nothing? Hell, why not go whole hog and run David Gergen?

Crimony!

MayBee

clarice- let us know what your son hears.
All my friends in Tokyo have checked in. It was awful, but they are safe. Their kids just now got home from school. 7 hour bus ride.

Jane- yeah, I'm glad I missed this one.

Bless the people.

Melinda Romanoff

It was my idea, so I'll do it.

Yodelling you now.

PD

Good Grief! Big Government has a post up (LUN) that the unions are calling in the UN to end all right to work laws.

Let's go back to the days of medieval guilds, eh?

clarice feldman

MayBee that's all I'm likely to hear. Apparently Tokyo and Osaka and south are fine--it's the Northeast that was badly hit.

Porchlight

The Texas State Employees Union has a tiny little table representing their tiny little union outside my building this morning. I think they are protesting something or other. Hahahaha.

Has Barry been hanging out with Tom Friedman recently?

NYT: "Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, 'No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square.'"

I'm trying to think of something funny to add but I'm speechless.

Janet

Let's go back to the days of medieval guilds, eh?

Yeah PD, they call themselves progressives, but they're all about marching backwards in time. Guilds, can't use energy, no cars, blackouts, local organic gardens, child sacrifice,...

PD

Walker just signed the bill.

PD

Janet, don't forget sun worship.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Walker has signed the bill. It is now a done deal.

Janet

...exactly, sun worship too.

PD

Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China.

It's always so easy to do something when you've never tried it.

But if he wants to step down and go over there, hey, who are we to stop him?

MayBee

Sorry, Clarice. I asked for the updates about your son's relatives before I refreshed and saw you'd given one.
Luckily my friends in Tokyo are able to communicate by email and internet but they are all pretty shook up. And these are people who have been through a million earthquakes.

Ignatz

--Does typepad have a limit for how long my response can be?--

That question has been put to the test by TM's co-blogger (amusing comment at 1:50PM) and no practical limit has yet been found.

Ignatz

-- "Mr. Obama has told people that it would be so much easier to be the president of China. As one official put it, 'No one is scrutinizing Hu Jintao’s words in Tahrir Square.'"--

Me too. Not because Barry has a totalitarian impulse; all committed leftists do.
But do his advisers think Tahrir square is in China?

Captain Hate

Daddy, we discussed Cornyn's latest brilliant idea last night.

LOL Iggy; SMART DIPLOMACY!!!

clarice feldman

Happens all the time,, MayBee .

Rick Ballard

Ignatz,

He may well be referring to the responses of the Tahrir Square tweet mob that Rush highlighted. The tweet mob noted that TOTUS and the Waffle House were both irrelevant and immaterial and saluted BOzo accordingly.

I hope Rush notes the needle response. It's fun to watch BOzo twitch.

MayBee

I have to admit I chuckled at the Japanese Prime Minister's address to the people last night. It was basically "Follow your plan and don't make things more difficult for others" So Japanese! Love it.

Captain Hate

Big rally on Sat. with 200 tractors and maybe Springstein.

This must be Broooooooooooce trying to recreate himself as a latter day Woody Guthrie commie symp since he's probably milked as much as he's gonna from endless "reunion" tours; although the ongoing willingness of boomers to relive their childhood is the motherlode of marketing opportunities. He hasn't had an original musical idea in decades. And LOL @ somebody known as "Teh Boss" to emerge from his mansion to be down with the people.

MayBee, My son's Tokyo buddy says the govt said the nuclear generator problem was under control but that no one should believe a word the govt is saying.

Update per Geraghty tweet that NRSC supposedly was asking Scarborough about NY not FL run.

Oh, that's better . . . NOT!

MayBee

Oh yeah. Japan's government will always tell you these aren't the drones you're looking for.
But I find the lack of "We'll take care of you, we are doing everything we can to help you" talk very refreshing.
Compare it to what a US President has to say.

Thanks Captain,

I get so behind so often I sometimes can't make it thru all the threads so I missed it. Would love to have seen your veins popping out when you first saw that story about Kornyn and Joe Scarborough.

Btw, did anybody that uses Firefox lose all their cookies last night? I didn't do anything but now I have to sign on to every site.

Here's the little fella...um...err..lass.

Don't these things have voting rights in Spain?

Henry

Capt H, did you accidentally turn on safe browsing?

Threadkiller

Captain Hate

Henry, it's possible with this laptop and the garbage touch-pad that I use on it going haywire. Believe me, if I did it, it was inadvertent. Plus I added some downloading software that seems to pop up everytime I boot up. Plus when I open a new tab it goes to "bing" which is fine with me to jettison the google turds.

Janet

macphisto

going back to bullying for a moment:

first of all, i agree that it's not a Presidential issue. this is the epitome of a local issue...the situation in the Bronx is in no way analogous to the situation in Pendleton, OR, and the same policies cannot fit both situations.

i am, however, rather irked, as was no doubt the intention--nice trolling!--by Sara's post. i refuse to accept the notion that people should have to fight simply for the right to dress differently. if i walked into a bar today, would you say that some guy would be justified in punching me out because he didn't like my hair? what a pathetically childish way to go through life. why didn't i learn to box, she asks? why should i spend years of my life on one jerk? if a ninja decides to pick on me, should i have to go to ninja school? no. if i'm assaulted by someone i can't take on my own (at that time i was 5'8" and 116 lb. fully dressed, soaking wet, with stuff in my pockets), i call the cops. that's what they're there for. it was true when i was 16, and it's true today. i don't care if it fits into your pseudo-Darwinian scheme of how things should be, or your pinched, narrow little view of life where a girl with two colors in her hair is akin to an abomination. i am who i am, and i don't have to fight for it, least of all on your playing field under your rules.

Captain Hate

Ext has it right. If you think I have it in for Cornyn, the AoS crew currently commenting puts me to shame. Don't know where the usual squishy morons are; maybe having a daisy chain with AllahFrumdit and Poppin' Fresh.

macphisto

re: Broooooce: i think he's just about run out the string on the reunion tours now...Danny Federici is dead, and the Big Man is on his second hip replacement. whish is to say that the ESB is literally on its last legs.

I believe Organizing for America is actually breeding those monkeys in a closed facility somewhere in the Wisconsin Dells.

Janet

Why Janet?

I was just jokin' around Jane. I linked to the story on Spain giving monkeys human rights...they don't get voting rights.

macphisto

but if they have human rights, then aren't voting rights inherent? isn't there something in the UN Conventions on Human Rights on this? hello, slippery slope!

Melinda Romanoff

macphisto-

If they bred them there, the pellet holes would be everywhere. They need something new to shoot at because the deer herd is so thin near the Dells.

I know I would...

MayBee

Surely they have collective bargaining rights.

Ignatz

--i am, however, rather irked, as was no doubt the intention--nice trolling!--by Sara's post. i refuse to accept the notion that people should have to fight simply for the right to dress differently.--

Yeah, I found that response pretty troubling myself.

Melinda Romanoff

Mac & Ig-

I think she's going through a pretty painful patch right now. Not an excuse, just an observation. She was up all last night, for some reason.

Danube of Thought

Tsunami passed the San Diego area an hour or so ago. Pretty much a non-event.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

MacPhisto: I didn't say you should have done any of those things, I asked if you'd thought it through when you decided to be different. And no I would not expect someone to punch you out for having different hair, but I assume you are no longer in high school. High school has unwritten rules. I'm not saying its a good thing, just the way it is, has been, and probably always will be.

As to calling the police. There we differ. I would never ever call the police for any reason. You see, I am more afraid of them than any civilian bully. Especially afraid of the rogues on 'roids, like the two who broke into my Mother's home and scared her to the point she stopped breathing and had to be put on life support and attacked me, stripped me, and then threw me on the bed, handcuffed me and then jumped on my back, breaking multiple lumbar vertebrae. Try being 55 years and 90 years old, neither of us over 130 lbs, and have a 6'5" 245 lb. guy jump on you and threaten your Mother that if she didn't stop calling out her daughter's name he'd take her away and "lose her" in the desert. The guy's biceps were bigger than my thighs. I was terrified and crying, my 90 year old Mother, who had just gotten home from the hospital after surgery for a broken hip and was confined to bed, got mad. She was struggling to sit up and get out of bed to take the guy on, when he grabbed her by the shoulders and started shaking her. That's when she stopped breathing. By then I was hysterical. I thought he'd killed her and I fully expected he intended to rape me and then kill me too.

Calling the police is a very uncreative way to handle a bully. Bullies are bullies because they are cowards. You have to beat them at their own game. My goal above was to live thru the attack, since I knew there was no way I could fight back. I did, and within the hour, I was at the hospital, the doctor was taking Polaroids of all my bruises and xrays of my breaks, they also fractured my arm, then I had another set of photos taken by my cousin. Plus my Mother was admitted to the hospital and I made sure her record documented exactly why she was there. At 9 am the next morning, I was at an attorney's office and filing suit against the cop and the county. Took six years of legal wrangling, but I won the case. My Mother passed away before it was all over, but she lived long enough to know that the guy was going down. Got some money and got him kicked off the force and forced to forfeit his pension. Anyone who thinks the cops are the answer because their job is to protect and serve lives in fantasyland. Or never lived in California.

That girl, BTW, with 2 color hair is my Granddaughter and it wasn't her two color hair that had me upset, it was 2 lip rings and a nose ring and a boyfriend who wanted to use her body to learn to tatoo. Kinda bullying, doncha think, to throw my grandchild up in my face? See I can be thin-skinned too. Not.

Jim Ryan

Tale of two Charlottesville 20-year-olds.

One, Airman Zachary Cuddeback, is being laid to rest this week. He was murdered in Germany by the Islamofascist in the shooting on the bus.

The other, some dude, chug-a-lugged soy sauce in a frat hazing yesterday, ending up in the ICU.

Janet

About the bullying..I'll also toss in that the term isn't defined. While some JOMers were addressing teasing, being mean,...
Other JOMers were addressing stalking, & physical violence.
It seems like that is gonna be part of the problem when addressing bullying.
I know a big part of Kevin Jennings push was to address bullying of gay kids. Is believing homosexual behavior is a sin gonna be classified as bullying?

Captain Hate

Is believing homosexual behavior is a sin gonna be classified as bullying?

That would be the next step. What the homos have to realize is what Tammy Bruce endlessly preaches: They're being used by the left to undermine western civilization. They don't care about them and their rights per se; they're just a means to an end.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Janet: Yes. In this p.c. world, just about anything you say that the other person disagrees with is considered bullying. And you better be aware of every bit of baggage the other person is carrying around, because if you inadvertently say something that pushes one of those buttons, you will be accused of all kinds of "ism" atrocities.

harrjf

The WI South Central Federation of Labor (local chapter of the AFL-CIO for Madison, etal) is trying to instigate a general strike of the private unions. Supposedly the date would be Apr 4th to coincide with the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.

I say instigate because they are legally prevented from organizing a general strike by the Taft-Hartley act. I understand that they are "educating" the affiliates on the options open to them.

I expect that rather than a strike that could result in penalties for unions with existing contracts or no strike provisions we will see a mass sickout to show support.

MayBee

Janet- good point.
There is bullying that rises to a criminal level, and that should be handled by legal authorities. The idea that teenagers should have to deal with something adults would call the cops about is ridiculous.

But much of this is about teaching kids to watch what you say. And empowering parents to ignore any reasonable semblance of privacy kids used to be given.

Jane (sit on the couch or save your country)

Capn',

There are more Tammy Bruces out there than you think. Not enough, but the numbers are growing. Obama has helped a lot in that cause from what I can tell.
