Why doesn't this moronic jug-eared freak just man up and declare an end to the drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico? That would psychologically take the air out of a lot of the price speculation on the crude oil futures exchanges. I actually believe that real business types have little access to this ideologue who is dumbfounded by a simple show of force to overthrow a vicious dictator [and friend of his friends Elijah Mohammed, Rev. Wright, and the funky dude who now heads the Black Muslims---Farrakhan. I wonder if the dude who attended the "million man march" in the early nineties still has a soft spot [in his skull] for the crazed black racists like the "New" Black Panthers. Eric Holder certainly does. Off topic, but sincerely worried we have a born loser in the White House [or maybe he made himself into a loser?]

Rick Ballard

Daddy,

I believe the pool of ignorance concerning the budget to be of such a depth that the reality of the size of the cuts is immaterial. If discretionary spending were cut by 100% tomorrow, there would still be a deficit.

For myself - I wish Tan Man had laid a larger cornerstone but I'll be content as long as additional stone is being laid. The debt ceiling fight will be followed by the beginning of the '12 budget fight and we'll have a much better picture of total resolve at that point than we do now.

It's also fine with me if the Tea Party class in the House rejects the deal. That would make for a fine bit of theater.

Rob Crawford

(Another)Barbara- have you seen the reports that Hawaii has now made it true that you cannot receive a copy of your long form birth certificate>

So no one from Hawaii is allowed to get a passport?

(Another) Barbara

(Another)Barbara- have you seen the reports that Hawaii has now made it true that you cannot receive a copy of your long form birth certificate>

No, I haven't MayBee. The only news about it I've read in the past 24 hours is about the several local people who've gone down to the DOH within the past week, paid their $10, and then have walked away with a photocopy of their long-form birth certificate. Of course I saw that on Facebook, so who knows? What did you hear?

daveinboca

BTW, when I was an FSO serving in France, I was told by Peter Tarnoff that the French never changed their cryptic military codes even after noisily dropping out of NATO under De Gaulle---"Le Grand Charles and his "anti-American" successors in the presidency weren't silly enough to actually remove themselves from ceux qui porte le parapluie [nucleaire] and in a crunch, except for that venal corrupt bought-and-paid-for Chirac, another Berlusconi, they would always have our back. Even the so-called Socialist Mitterrand was more pro-American than anyone let on. The French just have a VERY strange way of showing it sometimes.

Sue

Shoot. The Rangers lost today. That's what happens when I get cocky.

Jane

I'm with you Rick, altho it may be because I am so sick of being so depressed about my country.

Frau Rumpelstilzchen

Isn't the upcoming budget for 2012 the Main Event? I'm not ready to throw mud at Tan Man and his crew. More info, please. Tea partiers should know what they/we are screaming about or they/we diminish our credibility. IMO Brer Barry is not Brer Rabbit the trickster.

jimmyk

Daddy, Narciso had a link (I've LUNed it) in the previous thread that suggests that the "cuts" are full of gimmicks and not genuine. There was a PJM piece today that argues (sensibly in my view) that the Repubs focus should have been on cutting specific programs (harder to gimmick) than on a specific dollar amount.

So we'll have to await the fight over the 2012 budget.

Janet

Great post & picture Frau! Hahahaha
What a mess...

Ranger

Well, the same people in the same poll that every one is citing giving Obama credit for the budget deal are also only giving him 48% job approval, and 50% disaproval. And that poll is of adults, not even registered voters as a screen.

Oh, and a smiliar group of people think increasing the debt limit is a bad idea by around 71%. If the debt limit doesn't go up, it doesn't matter what the budget is, the government can't spend any more money than it takes in.

In my view, this was a tactical draw, but a strategic victory. We have moved the conversation from "should we reduce spending" to "How much should we reduce spending." Oh, and even if a lot of the money cut was recinding unspent authorized money, it still reduces the baseline for future budgets.

The debt limit increase is a fight that has only up side for the Republicans at this point. If the Republicans are smart, they will only offer a minimal increase and force a series of debt limit votes from now until the next ellection, just to remind voters how big the debt is and that it is still going up very fast.

Janet

Here's Aunt Zeituni demanding Trump respects Obama & his family.

She's looking pretty good -

Thank you tax payers of Massachusetts!
(why is this woman in our country again?)

narciso

True, DiB, they did have a more aggressive response on Beirut, than we did, conversely
Chirac the nominal rightist, was more tied
to antiAmericanregimes like Iraq, hence Tammuz 16, was called Osirak

Ignatz

(why is this woman in our country again still?)

glasater

Did not Jay Cost recently write about the debt being the main issue in next years presidential campaign?

daddy

Thanks JimmyK for that link. I'll get to it later, as am immediately off to the Simulator for day 2...Ughh.

Another Barbara,

They are still telling us that the new mandate from India is that India now requires that we provided an original copy of our Birth Certificate in order to get our 10 Year Indian Visa renewed.

It'll be interesting to see what your folks view is of this Budget deal when I check back in in about 8 hours. Seems like the sad details are slowly dribbling out. At the moment though it sounds like a perfect example of why we should never pass something to find out whats in it.

MayBee

A(B) LUN. I have no idea how valid this truly is.

clarice

Yeah, Soylent!!!! Call when you can..

Porchlight

Kinda interesting that the AP's analysis of the deal is taken as complete gospel right off the bat even in righty circles.

I'm sticking with Boehner & crew. This carp ain't easy. I really dislike the howlers behaving as if this is a no-brainer and anyone could just walk in there and git 'er done. Doesn't work that way.

(Another) Barbara

The information at that link is stunning, MayBee. I'm thinking through how to learn whether it's true -- that the policy was changed, and by edict rather than statute. If we had a real newspaper in Hawaii it would be easy, but of course we don't. I'm going to get busy on it, though, and will pass along whatever I learn, if anything. Scary, isn't it, to imagine that all people born in Hawaii would be denied a copy of their official birth certificate, just to accommodate Obama. Good thing he doesn't lisp.

Melinda Romanoff

Porch-

Likewise, more data please.

Frau Rumpelstilzchen

What's so outrageous about HI's cure for the BO-BC mess is that the people in power stick it to everyone else for the sake of one shyster. If Dubya had acted so arrogantly, the playbook would have been "Invaders of the Locked Vault," and those files breached. There was a reason Obama operatives broke into the passport office during 2008. They could have destroyed evidence and/or submitted altered information. It's getting more and more difficult to forget all the past carp.

Frau Rumpelstilzchen

"Good thing he doesn't lisp."

No, we have a whistling jackass.

Danube of Thought

Two certain things about upcoming deficit talks: (1) every manner of deceptive legerdemain will be used by the Dems; (2) it will be a balls-to-the-wall effort at redistribution.

I'm really not optimistic about the ultimate outcome. I just don't think the American people have the stomach for it.

 centralcal

Ladies, you are cracking me up - lisping or whistling, he is a jackass.

Danube of Thought

Prediction: no state senator from either party will be recalled in Wisconsin.

Melinda Romanoff

I will place a beverage bet on that one, DoT.

And I will say at least 1 will be recalled.

maryrose

The one that will be recalled will be a dem[fleebagger] because he's from a mostly republican district and got in on a fluke.

(Another) Barbara

cc: I sent you an email last week. Did it go through?

 centralcal

You did? Oh dang - let me go check.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

When I get a chance, Jane, I will tell the story of what senior military officers were confronted with in the LBJ/McNamara era as the Vietnam war expanded. It will stay with me all my life.

I just mentioned McNamara to Jack in the other thread.

I wrote something similar:

Three words: Robert Strange McNamara

I don't know about in your circles Jack, but in our Navy circles back then, he was the most despised as the Kennedy/Johnson Sec Def. I feel the animosity rise up in my body just typing his name.

 centralcal

AB: No email and you weren't trapped in spam like the last time. Also, I checked and you are definitely in my contact list. Don't know what might be going on.

(Another) Barbara

Don't know what might be going on.

Okay cc, nothing urgent. I'll try a resend now.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

And it begins.

Via Big Hollywood:

And so it finally happened. Obviously troubled by the fact that Donald Trump’s questions surrounding Barack Obama’s birth certificate are starting to gain some real traction, Ben Smith at the left-wing Politico finally panicked and fired off the Race Card. Hilariously, Smith did so using my favorite brand of agendized journOlism, what I call the “Some Say” tactic. How it works is very simple. In order for Smith to hide behind his dishonest and arrogant veil of objectivity, he simply finds others saying what he wants to say and abuses his position to amplify the charges directly into the narrative. Today, his chosen ”Some Sayers” are those in the Black community accusing Trump of racism.
Sara (Pal2Pal)

BTW, The “I hate when I wake up and Sarah Palin is still alive” page is still up and running on Facebook.

I saw this the other day on Gateway Pundit and went to the page and made a formal Facebook takedown complaint. Hopefully this new publicity will get more to do so. The death threat against Sarah are out of hand.

Three words: Robert Strange McNamara

I don't know about in your circles Jack, but in our Navy circles back then, he was the most despised as the Kennedy/Johnson Sec Def. I feel the animosity rise up in my body just typing his name.

Our Army circles back then felt the same way, Sue and DOT.

The major problem in April, 1966 was obvious even to 20 something citizen soldiers; there was no articulated unified objective coming from the top.

In our morning Armor Officer Basic briefing on Vietnam, the briefer from Military Assistance Command Vietnam, a field grade officer who had served as an advisor, told us that the objective of the war was to win the hearts and minds of the SVN people. In the afternoon, the briefer from United States Army Vietnam, a helicopter pilot, told us the objective of the war was to kill as many GD Gooks as we can.

Fourteen years later, when I first saw The Wall, I could see that over 80% of the KIA troops, were killed after April 1966. I have hated RSM ever since. His autobiography increased that hatred.

Captain Hate

So did Ben Smith draw the short straw for the slime assignment? His likeness at Politico makes him look like a douche which, considering they try to be somewhat flattering with such things, is probably an understatement. Maybe Trump can take a few of those turds down.

I don't know what to think about the budget deal. There've been quite a few posters at AoS that have been badmouthing it but I'm not ready to throw in with them just yet. If Boehner and company have deliberately screwed this up and follow up with botching the debt ceiling, it could mark the end of the Republican party; and if so it would be well deserved.

 centralcal

Captain Hate, read this from John Podhoretz at Commentary:

The Budget Deal May Collapse

Jim Rhoads a/k/a vnjagvet

Sara:

Thanks.

My Fort Knox XO 2LT Howard McCarthy, Jr., was killed in August, 1966, just four months after your BIL. He and I bought engagement rings for our fiancees in the first week of June, before he reported to SF on his way to VN. He got in country June 30 and was killed August 2 on his first day in the field. He is on panel 9e -- four whole panels of names in four months. But there were 61/70 panels to go with names on them. That is what enraged me in 1982; I doubt if that rage will ever subside.

narciso

No, he volunteered,Captain, as his previous linked work indicates.

Captain Hate

Thanks cc; well *that's* very disappointing. More Repuke flim-flam men who are good at saying one thing and doing another. How are they any better than the commiecrats?

narciso

Duke and Duke strikes again,Captain, they have a certain skill at that, now the pressure will be on to double their efforts
on the debt ceiling.

maryrose

I will remain positive. We will achieve small victories along the way. Heck we might even force Obama's hand enough to see his test scores and college courses and the infamous birth certificate. Any cocaine user at some point is hanging out with some pretty nefarious people. And we know he liked to listen to anti-American preachers and he palled around with terrorists and visited their homes.Let's shine a big bright light on Obama from now until the 2012 election.

maryrose

The markets suffered today because Odumbo started talking about raising taxes again. This issue was settled in December and we don't need to revisit it.Krauthammer says if Obama doesn't have any details tomorrow he will be a laughing stock.Spending caps must be put in place and the fascist wing of the dem party needs to sit down and stop talking about spending.Obama probably didn't take many business courses because he sure seems to be winging it on the economy and all the adults have left the building.

Captain Hate

That's beyond disappointment, narc. Against my better instincts I willfully ignored what Rush, Tammy and Mark, three people who never have misled me previously, were saying and believed that a bunch of career pols had done what they campaigned on. Either Boehner is too stupid to understand what he was doing or lied about what he had done. If it was the former that's game over. If it was the latter, did he really think that we're too dumb to find that out even if the MFM covered for him (LOL at that possibility)? Both parties are beyond repair. Tea party or nothing.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Jim: The first time I visited the Wall, they still had the POW/MIA tables and grab bags, where for a $10 donation you could reach in and pull out one of the POW/MIA bracelets that so many wore back then. Each bracelet was in a baggy with a piece of paper giving a short bio of the person whose bracelet you picked. I decided to donate. They had bags for each branch of service, but no Navy ones left so I told the young volunteer, you decide which bag and I'll pick. When I pulled out the bracelet, I nearly fainted because it was Del's. I had chills and then I broke down and started sobbing uncontrollably while my family and that poor volunteer looked on not knowing why I had become so emotional. Finally I was able to speak coherently and everyone became emotional as we considered the odds of me selecting my BIL's bracelet when there were so few left to pick from.

I ultimately sent it to his daughter, Raylynna, who was born the day he died.

Captain Hate

maryrose, people at AoS are expecting Odummy to triangulate tomorrow. I already weighed in stating he's too dogmatically stupid to do that and, at best, the MFM will claim he did so while he does nothing but spout lefty platitudes with no details about anything.

I agree with what the mood of the country is but I also don't think that the muddle wants to undergo any sort of sacrifice; I hope I'm wrong on that but I'm afraid that even if I am, there's no party willing to test that. The Repukes pussed out on the budget badly and now they're in a position where nobody trusts them. Maybe they would've survived a shutdown before but by being gutless they screwed the pooch for the future.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Del was seen still alive on the ground by a helicopter crew, but enemy fire was so heavy they were not able to accomplish a rescue, according to reports. After that day, there has never been another word of info. The "died while missing" is an assumption, but noone knows what happened or when. Was he captured? Were his injuries the cause? Was he killed on sight? We just don't know. He is listed on the wall as MIA.

centralcal

Both parties are beyond repair. Tea party or nothing.

I agree with you Captain. I sent Eric Cantor (Twitter handle is GOP Leader) a nicely worded "got to hell" message and unfollowed him on Twitter.

pagar

"I doubt if that rage will ever subside"

Mine never has! I do not understand how John Kerry could lead demonstrations supporting the North Vietnam military efforts to defeat the US and allies in the Vietnam War and yet be allowed to hold elected office in the US.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

The Repukes pussed out on the budget badly and now they're in a position where nobody trusts them.

That's your opinion CH. And maybe the morons at AofS. Many of us realize that $78 billion off a budget that should have passed a year ago asking for $100 billion in increases and covers us until Sept 30th was a decent job. Not a cheering job, but a decent one. As Boehner has made perfectly clear, it was only Step One, with two more big big battles to go in the Debt Ceiling debate and the 2012 budget.

This all or nothing BS that the far right is whining about is why we lost in 2006, but now we are in control of the message, so let's make sure we trash every single thing and give as much fodder to the other side as we can, because that's how we roll, I guess. Irritates the hell out of me.

Jane

Tea party or nothing.

If you mean that, prove it this friday.

maryrose

I agree with Sara, don't let perfect be the enemy of doing good. Schummy and Harry wanted to shut it down and did absolutely nothing to help the process. Doing the opposite of what they want is the winning strategy. Remember how much success George Costanza of Seinfeld fame had on the day he did the opposite of what he thought would work.

narciso

OT, this was something that had occurred to me earlier;

http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/04/12/saudi-arabia-second-fukushima-if-iran-bushehr-activated-in-may/#comments

Cecil Turner

Not a cheering job, but a decent one.

Better than that. We actually cut an ongoing budget, which is a major turnaround. Yeah, the cuts are largely flab and accounting tricks . . . but those have to be cut first. And besides, none of it touched the main issue, which is out-of-control entitlement growth. If we can just flatten that curve out below the growth rate, it'll eventually catch up.

Moreover, the Dems read the tea leaves and are paying lip service to cuts (claiming they always planned on doing it sooner or later . . . riiiight). This is going to make their demagoguery on the upcoming budget battle a lot harder to justify on ideological grounds.

Both parties are beyond repair. Tea party or nothing.

Crazy talk. The country is balanced on a razor edge between people who pay taxes and see that fiscal discipline is the only way to long-term stability (including single-issue defense voters like myself who now see government spending as the single biggest threat to the republic) and those with their hands out who want to garner a larger share of the public pie regardless of the cost. The most common result of voting against entitlements is shifting the seat to the other party. The Tea Party as a part of the GOP works. As a stand-alone, it empowers the Dems to continue the spending spree.

narciso

The old line, from Hunter Thompson I think 'when the going gets tough, the tough get weird' was never truer than this:

http://beforeitsnews.com/story/553/845/Deadly_time_vortex_appears_over_Antarctica.html&NL

Rick Ballard

"none of it touched the main issue, which is out-of-control entitlement growth"

Yup. How many people know that spending under the continuing resolution, which applies to the '10 budget numbers, will actually increase by $200 billion in '11 solely on mandatory programs? There is only $1.35 trillion in discretionary spending available to be cut. Mandatory is projected to drop by $70 billion in '12 but it picks right back up in '13 and grows like Topsy from there.

Jack is Back!

Sara and DoT,

McNamara is another of the "smartest guys in the room" who thought his intelligence was beyond measure and as such the seas would part and allow us un-fettered victory. He was a supreme egoist without any idea of how a military works espeically the ballet between land forces, logistics and air power. But it was Walter Rostow who, in my opinion, who was the Dark Knight who held more sway over LBJ than the generals or even McNamara.

Jim Rhoads a/k/a vnjagvet

I wonder what the mathematical chances were of your picking up your BIL's bracelet? Coincidence? Not as far as I am concerned.

JIB, Rostow the economist running a war in SE Asia? Yeah, that's the ticket. Do you recommend any tell-all books from the inside about that period?

narciso

I had read about Delbert Peterson, in my albeit brief study of the POW/MIA issue, but
I never thought I would run into anyone who knew him.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Jim: My Dad used to say that the happiest day of his life was the day I was born and the world celebrated VE day. My husband said the happiest day of his life was my birthday in 1975 when the Vietnam War officially ended.

Ralph L

My father's USNA classmate (Lt Gen) Charlie Cooper opened his self-published memoir with him holding the charts for the Joint Chiefs to brief LBJ on their ideas for taking the fight to the NV early in the war. LBJ had an extended tantrum and rejected them.

I think they should have quit.

Cooper later led a battalion in Vietnam, and a few of his men murdered some civilians (allegedly). As a witness, Ollie North managed to get one of his former Marines off the hook, and Jim Webb filed an appeal for another one. Cooper's career was in limbo for a few years before he rose rapidly to command the Marine Barracks.

Can anyone enlighten me on what may happen when/if the House does not pass the budget bill.

WTF will happen..

Danube of Thought

Been out this evening. Lots and lots of stuff here about LBJ, McNamara and the whole damn-fool bunch resonates powerfully with me.

Much detains me right now, but I really look forward to unloading on this topic at some point.

Barbara

Is anyone reassessing his/her enthusiasm about Republican success in the budget deal?

Another Barbara,

I wasn't too confident that Boehner and crew would be very successful in this first go round at cutting the budget. What troubles me though is the process. It seems that there isn't even a pretense of an open legislative process anymore. Deals are struck behind closed doors and then sprung on the public as a fait accompli. This is how we got Obamacare and now the budget.

I am not so naive as to believe that back room deals are not the stuff of which government is made, but it is troublesome that so much is being hidden from the American public. Truly, I've never seen anything like this before, and it does not bode well for the future.

Hi Soylent,

So glad you are in Kuwait. My nephew deploys the end of this week. We're so proud of him, and praying hard too.

Ralph L

Thanks, Narciso, that is indeed it. My copy is under one side of my computer to compensate for the carpet edge. My dad played JV football with him but wasn't good or big enough for the varsity, which Charlie was. He nearly died in Korea.

Just to pour a little gas on the Obama COLB fire I just came across this tweet on the subject:

daveinboca

@narciso "True, DiB, they did have a more aggressive response on Beirut, than we did, conversely
Chirac the nominal rightist, was more tied

Chirac was supposedly getting HUGE amounts of gold, the French specie of choice, in the diplomatic pouch from the Iraqi UN delegation in Geneva run by Saddam's half-brother "Ambassador" to keep the Americans' feet to the fire on Iraq. This came out during an investigation about five years ago of a Minister of Defense named Pasqua who was also on the payroll. Pasqua resigned & Chirac was still President, so the entire Iraq episode sank from the French front pages [it never even hit the US press below the fold because that would make GWB look like he was being stabbed in the back]. Now Sarkozy & friends are seeing how far they can prosecute this truly venal Berlusconi of the Elysee Palace---the creep still claims presidential immunity.

Even Nixon had more class than Chirac.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Glasater: I've been saying that about his sister for a long time and feeling like I was talking to the air or a brick wall. I happen to find the fact that the family knew how to do this for the sister interesting. I don't know if it will prove out to be, but obviously it proves it could be done and little Barry's mother knew how and what to do, or at least Grandma did.

So Trump is not only OK with the Budget deal, but is fine with raising the debt ceiling, from his interview with Greta.
