That was easy - Team Obama has finally bestirred themselves and requested a copy of Obama's original Certificate of Live Birth, presumably hoping to silence those pesky critics who thought Obama had something to hide just because he was hiding something.
My Official Editorial Rumination was that there was no reason for the White House to hide it other than Obama's practice of managing his brand by hiding everything (leaving critics and skeptics unsure which haystack actually conceals a needle which may or may not exist.) Now Trump has moved on to Obama's school records.
ERRATA: Worth checking - there were some very well researched guesses made about Obama's likely certificate number, based on the known number of someone else born the same day or week. It would be interesting to back-test that.
WHAT LIBS LIKE TO BELIEVE: Ta Nehsi Coates, who thinks he understands the motivations of the birthers, offers this understanding of the legal background:
My understanding was that it was against the law for a person to give out copies of the literal birth certificate. I just looked up the law:
§338-18 Disclosure of records.(a) To protect the integrity of vital statistics records, to ensure their proper use, and to ensure the efficient and proper administration of the vital statistics system, it shall be unlawful for any person to permit inspection of, or to disclose information contained in vital statistics records, or to copy or issue a copy of all or part of any such record, except as authorized by this part or by rules adopted by the department of health.(b) The department shall not permit inspection of public health statistics records, or issue a certified copy of any such record or part thereof, unless it is satisfied that the applicant has a direct and tangible interest in the record. The law then goes on to define "tangible interests" as essentially the registrant, an agent of the registrant, their parents, spouse and some others. Apparently the Hawaiin government decided to make an exception in this case...
"Make an exception"? The NY Times was quite clear that Obama was entitled to see his own records when they "covered" this a year ago:
By Hawaiian law, birth records can be released only to people with “a direct and tangible” interest in them — a person born in the state, say, or certain relatives or their estates.
And CNN made a similar point earlier this week.
But people committed to Obama's faith-based initiative, such as Andrew Sullivan and, apparently, Mr. Coates, persuaded themselves that Obama's hands were tied. Despite the clear language of the law, these true believers imagined that neither Barack Obama as President nor the Obama family in their inevitable role at the inevitable Obama Presidential Library would ever get their hands on these records, which would simply molder in some vault somewhere beyond the reach of history. Seriously?
Well. Since they knew Obama's hands were tied, they were able to deduce that the critics and skeptics had other motivations. Back here in reality, people who understood Obama's options figured either he was hiding something or was playing this issue for political advantage.
Mr. Coates conclusion is inadvertently self-referential:
Evidently not.
FWIW: Here is the standard electronic summary; the original adds the name of the hospital and the attending physician to our store of knowledge, as well as background on the parents (age, place of birth, occupation).
I like what Mark Levin calls him--Chump.

TM:
Team Obama has been sitting on a copy of Obama's original Certificate of Live Birth, and they have finally condescended to release it.
The paper trail does not justify this language in your post. Obama's attorney posted a letter (Dated April 22 -- Friday) asking for the release of the return. The birth certificate certification is stamped 4/25/2011. Given time zone issues, the WH did not have the certificate in hand until Tuesday.

In the 1960s, they kept you in the hospital for days, sometimes up to a week. Notice his mother signed the certificate on 8/7/1961. Probably when she was getting ready to leave the hospital. I know for a fact that our local hospital sends stacks of birth certificates and death certificates to a doctor for signature, and he signs them when he has the opportunity to do so.
My speculation on the numbers are also data entry. Someone was showing someone else what information to input in a particular spot on a data entry form.
It's over, as far as I'm concerned. He was born in Hawaii. His father was Obama Sr. He was born in the hospital, attended by a doctor.
Unless he forged the certificate. Which I do not believe he did.

Clarice,
It's pretty clear to me that the numbers in the margin were made in pencil and probably the result of someone coding the document for statistical input.
As for the "seal", every state is different, but most of them (to my undertain knowledge) have laws on the books that state that the --signature-- is the seal, not an embossed seal. For example, Notaries in New York State purchase real mechanical seals only because many customers don't know that by state law, the signature is the seal. The embossing doesn't add a whit of legal significance.
I assume (there's that word) that Hawaii is the same.

The payments to the law firm to fight this was subrosa payback to keep Sarah Palin in check. The law firm was the group that kept the trolls in Alaska in high cotton overturning trashcans for info on her.
It's not the birth certificate, it's the 'cover up.' Why spend meellyons of dollars on a non issue? To funnel money to your PI investigating law firm without raising a stink about oppo research.
The birth cert would probably have been released before the election (don't candidates usually release them a month or so prior to the election) if the campaign didn't feel the need to keep funneling money to the oppo researchers to keep Palin in check.
The 'Trump card' has forced a significant foreclosure of the expenditures of additional sums to the law firm to go after Palin. Either they think she is sufficiently neutralized (doubtful) or they were sufficiently spooked by the latest polls. Either way, their subrosa warlords are taken off the chess board.

WKA does mention "natural born". It just wasn't necessary to decide the case, as they only needed to determine whether he was a citizen.
I think I understand why your focus on the difference between a "natural born" citizen and a person born a citizen disturbs me at a visceral level: If you are correct, my second son, born via a cesarean operation, may be ineligible to be President. I am also concerned about my nephew who was assembled in a test-tube in the UK (with 100% US ingredients) but birthed (naturally) in Michigan. Not once have these questions been litigated on the merits. A negative answer on either would be personally devastating.

Posted by: Appalled | April 27, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Fdcol, the weight of authority holds that natural-born citizen is synonymous with "citizen at birth," and the sources I cited establish that Obama meets that test, which certainly satisfies the concerns of the Founders.
There are those who argue otherwise, but not many, and most of them acknowledge that they are not arguing about what the law is but rather what they think it should be if originalist principles were observed.
In any event Obama's eligibility has been ratified by the votes of the electors and the absence of congressional objection to those votes. He is the president, and he cannot be removed except by death, impeachment, resignation or the next vote of the electors.

There are ways to point out facts without being FooBar ish. You usually have a more humorous touch.

--"WKA does mention "natural born". It just wasn't necessary to decide the case, as they only needed to determine whether he was a citizen."--
If they thought "natural born" was not necessary to decide the case, and common knowledge was "natural born" status is given to anyone born on U.S. soil, wouldn't they have been deciding "natural born" no matter what?
They excluded "natural born" because it was not synonymous with citizen at birth.
Was your son born here?

Thanks for the update, C.R. Funny how the President can get around these things when he actually wants to.

'difference between a "natural born" citizen and a person born a citizen'
Nobody has made a claim that "natural born" has anything to do with the medical concept of natural birth as opposed to cesarean or test tube.
IMO natural born referes to what all nations have historically considered citizens by birth, ie children of citizens.
The 14th extended "citizen at birth" to children born here of slaves using language directed to that circumstance. The parents of those children not owing allegiance to another nation.
WKA apparantley extended "citizen at birth" to pretty much any child born here not explicitly excluded and threw in "natural born" to boot.
None of that changes my opinion that the founders used the term to mean "children of US citizens born in the US".

"Not once have these questions been litigated on the merits"
McCain's eligibility was challenged on the merits in federal court, but the case was dismissed for lack of standing. No federal court will ever declare ineligible a person born on American soil or two (in certain circumstances one) American parent, and I seriously doubt that in such a case a plaintiff with standing will be found. The issue will be discussed ad nauseum on the fringes, but that's about it.

What a great month! Petulant leader of the free world capitulates to carnival barker. Makes a nice bookend for petulant Attorney General capitulating to know-nothing Congress.
Better archive that White House birther page, before it disappears. It really deserves a proper fisking, but for pure entertainment value, I'd start with this:
Don't stop laughing till you check out the actual PDF link which comes to us courtesy of.....Snopes.com! Maybe the White House was just trying to throw the birthers a poisoned bone, because if you actually plug in the Snopes' URL from the White House page, you get the green version. But never mind! They probably just saw the wisdom of pretending that Fight the Smears never existed.I've already maxed out my links/post, and I haven't even really gotten started! Oh man, I wish I'd been a fly on the White House wall when they were parsing this thing out.

It goes to show you, JM, they are as careless with this, as with everything else, 'leading
from behind' indeed.

"There are many good reasons to dislike Trump. He's not my cup of tea. But TM is right, he is getting results. "
And there you have why he released it: To help Trump, against whom he has no particular doubts he can win.

Well, the property on which he was born was at one point or another during the past few centuries part of three different european empires and at least one native one. But all those sharp knives could never be considered part of a natural birth. &Gosh, what about epidurals?* How 'natural' are they? OTOH, I recently had a neice born at her house, attended by local EMT's. No question there.

But Trump may decide not to run. Or he may run and not win the primary. In either case he can continue to draw attention to Obama's failings in the short term.
No. Occam's Razor says tgs upthread is right. Obama released the BC because the polling went the wrong way on it, and Trump in recent weeks was driving that polling.

Is that a dare? Or should I say another dare?
I'm half beginning to suspect one of those gals is Maybee.

OK, Donald, now scare up the marriage license for Stanley and Barack Sr. which according to a divorce document took place 2 Feb 1961 in Wailuku on the neighboring island of Maui. Date and place should make it a cinch ... or?
