Could have been Hillary's, maryrose.

Thomas Collins

If the picture is leaked or FOIAed, what Obama has done is drawn even more attention and ascribed even more importance to the picture than if he had simply released it.

DebinNC

Popular Mechanics article about OBL's DNA analysis, the fact that he has only half-siblings to check against, and the problem that poses in identifying him with 100% certainty.

Dave (in MA)
a dumb mistake by Brown
The initial report said that Brown saw photos "in an official briefing", so perhaps the mistake was not Brown's.
bgates

The reasons not to publish are to avoid inflaming those who really want to get inflamed, and start riots in the Mideast, and hurt our reputation.

In whose eyes will our reputation suffer if next week's lunatic Muslim riots and killing sprees happen after our government publishes a photograph rather than after our government declines to publish a photograph?

Extraneus

So if bin Laden's double was a half-brother or a cousin, the DNA match would look the same?

Extraneus

I guess this makes the college student thing more likely just an excuse to have a keg party.

A significant number of teens didn't know who Osama Bin Laden was until we killed him.

 centralcal

Hurt our reputation with whom? Jihadis? Lefties? pheh!

Avoid inflaiming whom? Jihadis? Lefties? Everything inflames them. double pheh!

Ext drudge cites to a report that 47% of the people in Detroit cannot read.

Well, this blurb from Drudge doesn't look like it's gonna be much help for Obama, but the link is going 502..

REUTERS, AP journalists describe staging of Obama photo taken after TV announcement of bin Laden's death...

narciso

This has gone full fustercluck, which I didn't think this was possible, I know even considering the people involved.

DebinNC

I wondered why Gates looked bemused while Hillary looked aghast and Obama looked like he lost his blankie and was terrified of never seeing it again.

OldTimer

John McCain has proved himself an even bigger thorn in the side throughout this fiasco. By deferring to Barry on the photo release and denying the Bush/Cheney interrogation methods used to apprehend OBL, he might as well permanently join the wusses in the Democrat Party and get it over with. See LUN for McCain's latest outrage..

Ubama is playing Mickey Mouse to GWB's wizard in "Decider's Apprentice" from Fraktasia.

OBL's DNA analysis, the fact that he has only half-siblings to check against, and the problem that poses in identifying him with 100% certainty

Even with your use of the initials, I had to read that twice to be sure we weren't talking about the other guy.

Ignatz

Good grief, it takes a special kind of genius to make a hash of flawlessly sweeping in, killing and extracting the body of the most wanted man in the world.
Every time I think this gang of lunkheads can't top themselves they prove me wrong.

Danube of Thought

I don't have a constitutional right to see bits and pieces of Obama's brain and skull.

No, but it appears you have a statutory right (and that I was wrong about the reach of FOIA).

Melinda Romanoff

This is starting to smell like there is a HUGE eff up somewhere in all this.

My Cheekago spidey sense is all tingly.

And maybe somebody DID NOT really "OK" the mission. It was done in an "acting for" sort of way.

In any event, something smells funny.

DebinNC

ABC, CNN, FOX, and MSNBC are all covering Obama's Ground Zero event all day tomorrow. Obama finally got a politico to drag along...Gov. Malloy of CT (who??, but Andrew Cuomo and Rudy Guiliani are still uncommitted. I guess Bloomberg will be there, but I haven't seen it reported. I wouldn't doubt Team Obama is now in Cornhusker Kickback mode and offering bribes to entice some "names" to show up and accompany Obama. I bet Obama is absolutely livid.

Extraneus

From OT's link:

McCain said he has not seen the photograph of bin Laden taken after he was shot in the face Sunday. Other senators approached in the Capitol basement said they also had not seen the photo.

The administration said Wednesday they will not release a photo. McCain told reporters he did not think the photograph needed to be released. “My initial opinion is that it’s not necessary to do so. I think there’s ample proof that this was Osama bin Laden,” said McCain, a Vietnam War veteran.

This is ridiculous. First Boehner, then Scott Brown - oh wait, not him anymore - and now McCain, say that we have ample proof, but reference nothing that would constitute actual proof. I guess I'm a proofer now, at least until I hear from our legal experts on this.

clarice

I've got an idea--It's unlikely Biden will be on the obama ticket again, why not start a campaign to have Obama run with McCain?

Danube of Thought

How'd you like to be the guys whose phone numbers were sewn inside Osama's clothes?

OldTimer

Reagan's ghost long ago left the White House grounds. "Trust but verify" doesn't exist in Barry's exalted brain trust.

Captain Hate

Once again McCain proves that 2008 was the "Name your Poison" election.

Excellent question, DoT. They have to hope the tags were too blood soaked to be read, I guess.

Extraneus

Anyone else notice the little mujahadeen's water pistol next to the bloody head of one of those dead guys at Weasel Zippers?

I admit that every time I see a head-scarfed woman with little boys in tow, I think that we need to deal with these people before my son has to do it.

None of this changes that.

clarice

Telegraph:
Leon Panetta, director of the CIA, revealed there was a 25 minute blackout during which the live feed from cameras mounted on the helmets of the US special forces was cut off.
A photograph released by the White House appeared to show the President and his aides in the situation room watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound.
Mr Panetta said: "Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn't know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.
"We had some observation of the approach there, but we did not have direct flow of information as to the actual conduct of the operation itself as they were going through the compound."
Mr Panetta also revealed that the US Navy Seals made the final decision to kill bin Laden rather than the president.
***

Panetta also repeated the claim that there had been a firefight and the article questions the claim that the Paks were not involved.

In any event, Panetta's description of the blackout makes it clear the sit room pic was staged.

Extraneus

Allahfather's Pizza

lol. Comment of the day?

Strawman Cometh

"So if bin Laden's double was a half-brother or a cousin, the DNA match would look the same?"

Only if they were fucking the same goat.

DebinNC

I thought Hillary's expression might reflect the time outside when the helicopter malfunctioned.

clarice

Could be, but the blank computer screens offers a clue that they knew nothing when the pic was taken.

Danube of Thought

Seems possible the photo could have been taken during one of the periods when they were getting a feed, e.g. During the approach to the compound.

I really am eager to learn whether there was a firefight, and what happened to the bad guys' weapons went. The SEALs are back in VA now, and Panetta should be talking to the leaders immediately.

Extraneus

I know Ranger had an astute comment on this, but

Rumsfeld: You Know, When You Discover An "Intelligence Jackpot," It's Probably Best Not To Tell People You've Discovered an Intelligence Jackpot

"I thought to myself, why in the world would they be talking about that. It ought not be talked about, there ought to be..just go about their business, gather any intel you can, and leave in doubt the people out there who feel vulnerable as a result of this," he told 630 WMAL.
So maybe there wasn't an intelligence jackpot.

Still no statement from Cheney? Is he ok these days?

The initial report said that Brown saw photos "in an official briefing", so perhaps the mistake was not Brown's.

Uh oh. I apologize to Brown, if that's the case. I would be honestly shocked if they were peddling fake photos in an official briefing but who knows at this point.

MayBee

DoT- did you look at the pictures of the dead guys from the compound? Does it look like people who have been shot in the back of the head?

 centralcal

Early yesterday morning I read a report (can't remember where) that there was a 20-25 minute blackout on the SEAL feed and that Panetta (at CIA) via feed to the Situation Room communicated to them when the "Geronimo" code was sounded. So, this report was out there long ago.

That is why I "tactfully" tried to argue with Sara on one of the threads yesterday that Obama, Hillary, et al. hadn't seen much of anything on the "giant TV screen."

windansea

only mistake made by the seals that I can see was an incomplete destruction of the copter that malfunctioned, saw pictures of the stealth tail rotor assembly that I am sure the russians and chinese are bidding on presently.

DebinNC

Uh oh. I apologize to Brown, if that's the case

His office later said a staffer had gotten the pic from what she thought was a reliable source, and it didn't originate from the official briefing.

Total Energy

What exactly is the issue for the political perverts on the Right?

You just hate negros, right?

Better re-boot those grey cells. Sounds like you are headed for the dreaded hard-drive Blue Screen of Death.

Melinda Romanoff

That's the eff up, clarice.

He lied Sunday night.

And he's going to get caught out.

JM Hanes

They could have been conferencing with Panetta in the situation room.

"President Barack Obama decided not to release photos of his body because it could have incited violence and used as an al Qaeda propaganda tool, the White House said on Wednesday."

It sure sounds like they don't think Osama's death has changed the terrorism equation, doesn't it? I guess the only difference is that they used to recruit with Bush's Iraq. Now it's Obama's Pakistan.

Uh oh. Looks like somebody else is gonna get a visit from the F.B.I.

clarice

Do Panetta and Obama even talk to each other before talking to the press?

MarkO

You know, I never liked Panetta, but he is inserting this episode into Obama like a stick of Preparation H.

 centralcal

From my link above:

Today, we’re sending legislation to the Hill that will cut through red tape and politics to rid the government of the burden of excess property and save taxpayers at least $15 billion. We look forward to working with members of Congress to pass this legislation, the Civilian Property Realignment Act.

They are getting awfully close to Clarice's CARP in their legislation naming. lol!

OldTimer

Wowser. Every time Panetta opens his mouth Obama looks smaller and smaller.

Arn

Sorry, but I think President "ditherer" made absolutely the right call here. To paraphrase Churchill, we stalked the bastard to his lair, and rid the earth of his shadow.

We believe in Capital Punishment, but unlike the Iranians or the Saudis we don't see a need for public executions. Like a lot of people, I admit I'd love to see this video or picture, but I don't feel good about that desire.

If we want to see a snuff film, we can watch Sarah Palin committing political suicide as she goes on attacking Obama for a decision that -- regardless of how you voted in 2008 or will vote in 2012 -- was the right call.

Conservatives have NO CLASS

Sorry about the hate 'cut and paste' but this gem from FOX is HIGH-larious.

"Osama bin Laden assassination turns conservatives into dirty hippies

byKaili Joy Gray

The new symbol of the Republican Party?

Who knew conservatives were, at heart, a bunch of dirty fucking hippies?

That's the new meme coming from the right. Fox's Shep Smith wants to know if "anyone talking about the fact that this is illegal, this operation was illegal, or is that a matter that's going to be left for another day?"

And on his Fox show Freedom Watch, Andrew Napolitano declared that the assassination is dangerous and unlawful:

This business of the president deciding to kill people is very dangerous and very unlawful. Put aside that governmental assassination is a violation of the Constitution. Put aside that this killing was not in self-defense and was without a declaration of war. Put aside the law that the president may never order the killing of civilians—period. And put aside that governmental killing violates at least four treaties and three federal statutes.

Extraneus

Thanks, OT.

It'd be nice to hear him say he's seen the evidence.

clarice

Conservatives, undoubtedly you have a more detailed knowlede of the law than the rest of us, perhaps you could give us some supporting citations.

Danube of Thought

Does it look like people who have been shot in the back of the head?

No, but it doesn't tell me anything about whether they were armed.

Conservatives have NO CLASS

"If we want to see a snuff film, we can watch Sarah Palin committing political suicide as she goes on attacking Obama for a decision that -- regardless of how you voted in 2008 or will vote in 2012 -- was the right call."

Uh, oh. Sanity.

You won't get along with these folks.

Extraneus

No, but it doesn't tell me anything about whether they were armed.

Unless they were brandishing water pistols.

They're all on their backs, indicating they weren't shot in the back.

clarice

My goodness, we can always tell when O is effing up by the new visitors who appear to spew here.

John the Baptist

The reaction to Osama's demise by the Right is emblematic of their
'scorched earth" policy toward Obama.

You people are not only un-American, but sub-human beyond all redemption, short of repentance for your political idiocy.

Grow some decency, and Jesus will repair your sodden souls,

da

Who said anything about their being shot in the back?

Danube of Thought

Who said anything about their being shot in the back?

DebinNC

From cc's almost CARP link:

"One of the most exciting aspects of the legislation is that it leverages the best practices of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program by empowering an independent board of experts to identify significant consolidation opportunities and bundle them for a swift up or down vote by Congress."

So just when Obama wants us to believe he's really, truly a leader and not a buck passer, he calls for yet another blue-ribbon commission to make the decisions he refuses to make.

JM Hanes

The link for the story on the photo staging works now -- they were probably just swamped with traffic. A link on that page actually took me to the same story with more pix of the moment(s). If you've been reading my posts today, you'll get a kick our of the title:

DebinNC

Hmm... Do we know the "televised" address was live and not the best of several attempts? That would explain the delay.

Sue

I hope Panetta has that letter in a safety deposit box somewhere. The one where Obama says they won't charge him with murder. It's funny, not ha ha funny, how the same administration that was willing to put members of our intelligence community on trial for harsh interrogation methods, and willing to court martial members of the military that socked a terrorist in the mouth, are now willing to shoot unarmed men. How do they square that in their own twisted minds? How does Holder sleep at night?

MayBee

Thanks, guys.

Dianne Feinstein said the reason to kill OBL was not that he was armed, but that he had guns in the room and he was possibly moving toward them.
Isn't that another argument against a gunfight? If Obama had heard a gunfight, would he have waited in his room for 30 minutes without grabbing his gun?

Captain Hate

the guy who really jumped the shark i n the narrative was Brennan, he decribes the cowardly Osama hiding behind a woman, firing back, firefight etc plus stated we would have captured him if he would have surrendered.

Now that we know there was a blackout of the live feed during the actual op inside the house, where the heck was he getting this story? Just making it up??

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/05/the-slippery-story-of-the-bin-laden-kill/238261/

Obama's narrative on TV was clean and sane compared to his subordinates, but then he is supposed to be in charge.

Elliott

And now Sunday evening's feature presentation included a 25-minute intermezzo. ("During an enthusiastic reenactment of his approach shot to the 7th green earlier in the afternoon, the President's nine-iron was briefly identically placed on the space-time continuum with the champagne that had been left to ice. Not only did this result in the terrible loss of a particularly fine vintage of Cristal, but there was in addition the concomitant inconvenience that the spectacular images being broadcast from Pakistan had to be suspended while staff lacking the requisite security clearances busied themselves downstairs contingency operations.")

I don't think there's any doubt as to who ordered the Code Maroon.

Ignatz

--JMH, how did you get better than the rest of us riff-raff?--

Good question, especially since she's the one who found cleo's lament about his asthmatic son, about which he is now throwing down the gauntlet.

Regarding the "Drudge" photos over at Weasel Zippers: how come we're ready to believe these photos are real? They came from a so called Paki security official (ISI, duh!). They could be the janitor and the gardaner killed by the Paki's themselves to keep them quiet. I am starting to get the feeling that none of this is real and that Clarice is right - lets just let them keep stumbling and stepping in the dog shit. Its always the coverup that gets them, right?

/this comment was staged in order to impress the public

John the Baptist

Iggy;

Is it possible you are getting confident?

I remember my first beer.

hit and run

I am living a fantasy in which the mission happens exactly as it did in reality -- and Obama just announced his death, reaffirmed our committment to go after any and all who would harm us,the entire administration kept mum as to details, then released the photo.

The "treasure trove" of intel we scooped up is a secret the Obama admin should be keeping from us. I don't want to know that. Because if I know . . . they know. Unless it's just disinformation and the Obama admin is . . . well, they're just not that bright now are they?

The photo being withheld? No. Release it,get it over with. It all ends with the photos being released -- just like the birth certificate. Do it now or drag it out. They'll drag it out because, well, they're just not that bright.

To this day,if it went down like my fantasy,I would be singing Obama's praises. I would. Even now,I am fighting hard to give him credit. I really want to. Killing Osama means enough to me that I want Obama to get the credit. But damn if he doesn't want to kill that urge good and hard.

I do not care whether Osama was armed. I do not care if there were women harmed or killed in the operation. I do not care what happened during the mission. To the point I think all the questions surrounding how the mission went down are pointless if not counterproductive. We went in and killed him. Good. 'Nough said. I actually hope the SEALs deliberately disabled the helmet cams once they entered the building figuring that whatever was shot would someday be fodder for the left,if not Holder himself.

Osama's dead. I'm glad.

The sideshow the Obama admin is creating is really harshing my mellow.

maryrose

Obama's so called victory is becoming tainted because the facts just don't add up. Osama is dead-let's leave it at that and stop trying to wring more glory for Obama out of it.
