Damn.

Gmax

The judge should demand the passport as part of the bail collateral. It may make the trip back to France a tad more difficult, unless he can swim that distance in a very cold Atlantic.

Captain Hate

Rick, I agree whole-heartedly with your evaluation of der Mittens but I differ slightly with you in that I think DeathCare has to be exorcised legislatively to restore confidence by employers. But as for the restructuring; yeah that will be a long slog.

narciso

Now the only prospective candidate I really had a visceral negative reaction was Huckabee, well actually Trump rubbed me the wrong way as well:

DrJ

Narc, me too, but then there is Newt. And the campaign yet is young.

daddy

OK,

Serious beer talk here, but lets take a quick JOM survey between John Edward's skanky babe and Arnold's sow of a maid.

Here's Arnold's mistress.

Here's Edward's love object.

(JOMer's, little help. Can somebody who knows how please post both gal's pics please?)

Arnold's gal (Mildred) you have to subtract 10 years from.

Edward's gal (Rielle) you have to add 7 years to.

Take your time. No need to hurry. I'd recommend 5 or 6 pints of Guninness and a couple shots of Black Bush or Jamieson's (depending on if you're Catholic or Protestant) to help with the decision.

It's a damn tough call, but considering each one's name, personality, body weight, lips, all around nuttiness, and that 1 of them at least cleaned up the place, my current pint of Guinness says it'd rather do the maid than the Photo-Journalist.

1 vote for Mildred.

Let the Survey begin.

Neo

During the confirmation hearings, Sen. Tom Coburn (R) of Oklahoma asked Kagan if there was any time as solicitor general that she’d been asked to express an opinion on the legal merits of the health-care bill.

“There was not,” she responded.

daddy

1 on, nobody out for the Orioles in the 11th.

Mauriano's been yanked.

Tough times in Yankee-land continue.

MarkO

Rielle is so scary on every level that there is simply no way. I'd be at the dump shooting or watching porcine porno.

Mildred? Would take more than beer.

Frau Lehrerin a.D.

“There was not,” she (Kagan) responded.

Hey, give the little barista lady a break. She misspoke. It could happen to anyone.

Rick Ballard

CH,

I'll go for the first one bright enough to say "I can't do this alone - I need a solid majority to give me a repeal bill and I promise to sign it as soon as it hits my desk."

S/He also needs some first hundred day patter regarding regulatory relief and getting the damned government out of the way. Drill wherever there's oil, build the gas pipeline and start construction on five or ten nukes.

It really isn't that complicated and none of those items require Uncle Sugar to dip into our wallets.

Bases loaded, 1 out, and A-Rod pulls another completely boneheaded play. Man, the Bronx Bomber's are imploding.

Captain Hate

daddy I'm taking the fifth on that survey; because it would require at least that amount of Black Jack to contemplate those MI(not)LFs. Although if I got that hammered I'd probably choose Rielle after drunkenly seeing Cheri Young and getting her confused with that Skeletor elsewhere on the page.

Threadkiller

I followed Insty's link to Preston's take on Gov. Perry. Could he be our secret weapon by being dragged in late? Looks good, speaks well, knows the battlefield on the borders, ain't afeerd of Ole Stinky, either. Unlike the Christie for example, Perry has been governor for 10 years. I'm looking...

Captain Hate

Rick, why yes; that would work quite nicely.

Captain Hate

Ace described Mildred pretty accurately:

she looks a little like an overweight, aging Charo, mixed with The Joker.

Which I guess is just Cesar Romero, but she he wasn't that overweight.

Neo

Dominique Strauss-Kahn may have more to worry about than a possible prison sentence.

The IMF chief's alleged sex-assault victim lives in a Bronx apartment rented exclusively for adults with HIV or AIDS, The Post has learned.

The hotel maid, a West African immigrant, has occupied the fourth-floor High Bridge pad with her 15-year-old daughter since January -- and before that, lived in another Bronx apartment set aside by Harlem Community AIDS United strictly for adults with the virus and their families.

(Another) Barbara

OT to Dr.J

Grandson wrote me a long treatise on why an expensive Champagne is a waste at weddings, no matter how much money the bride's papa has. Trying not to take advantage of TM's space and the tolerance of others I'll skip all that and just say he agrees that you need not spend more than the minimum to get something that's perfectly acceptable. If you have any sniffy wine connoisseurs present you can have a couple of "good" (expensive) bottles under the table and dole those out to them.

His bottom line para:

"You have to go with Spanish or Italian to extract maximum value. Spanish Cava or Italian Prosecco are the best two value picks. Also, you should not pour a whole portion (4-6oz just for a toast. Most catering and glass-rental places will have a smaller format toasting glass in the 3-4 oz. range. Fill this half full and it will be plenty for most of the guests.

"No sense spending even $15 per bottle, as tasty Cavas and Prosecci can be had for the $10-12 range easily. I would do the NV (non-vintage) Cristalino for about $7-8, and then have two bottles of real Champagne for whomever inquires about or requests it. Let the saved money go towards satisfying the people that care about yeasty French bubbly, if there are any.

"Each bottle can pour ten portions of about 2.5oz (a big toasting pour), or about a dozen 2oz pours.

Hope this helps."

Sorry about taking up this space, Tom and everyone. Good luck Dr. J.

Threadkiller

Well I am halfway through your booze recommendations, Daddy, and this is my answer.

Threadkiller

--"daddy I'm taking the fifth on that survey"--

CH, I should have taken a fifth too.

centralcal

Hey AB, we have had and will probably have more folks planning weddings on these threads. That was helpful information for everyone (even special anniversary parties).

Porchlight

The Secret Service certainly needs to keep with the times.

Late back to the thread, jimmyk, but by "keeping up with the times" I meant having low-level staffers watch the news all day long and send out Twitter updates from the official Secret Service account based on the news. That seems like a major box-checking waste of time and apparently, that's what they're doing.

Now if they want to use Twitter for information-gathering purposes relevant to their mission, that is entirely different.

MarkO

TK, eeeek. Porcine porno.

Threadkiller

Yeah MarkO, can you believe Google is littered with this carp?

Porchlight

AB and DrJ, I was going to suggest Cava or Prosecco too. Not as divine as the best Champagne of course, but far more delicious dollar for dollar in the volume you would need for a wedding. I recently tried this Spanish Cava - pretty darn tasty for the price and a beautiful tawny color.

MarkO

Well, once a philosopher, twice a pervert.

(Another) Barbara

Did I mention, DrJ. that my grandbaby does wine lists for new upscale restaurants and consults for established ones about improving their lists? Didn't want you to think I asked for his counsel just because he's my darlin' and adored kin! He knows just about everything there is to know about wine, or so sayeth his proud granny.

DrJ

Thanks so much, (A)B. His thinking is pretty much in line with ours: good bubbly is wasted on the masses, and for a good toast really anything reasonable will do. I do want to enjoy anything that is left over, so that sets a floor.

We've been trying Spanish and Italian flavors (today's is French, actually) and agree that these usually are the best value. We'll have to continue the tastings!

I was not aware that there are smaller-format glasses available. That's much appreciated advice.

DrJ

(A)B, you didn't mention anything other than he or she knows wine. I'm fine with the CA ones, but the others, well, not so much.

I'll enjoy the tastings! We don't drink a lot of Champagne or sparkling wine left to our own tastes.

Thanks again.

I think the most interesting part of the Rielle/edwards saga is the way his best friend andrew young turned on him. Watching Young and his wife on tv trashing edwards was amazing. How could Edwards think he wouldn't get caught? He reminds me of Clinton with his sabotaging behavior. A shrink would have a field day with both of these hen-pecked losers.

I like Perry, but I don't have the impression he's been much on the national stage. The MSM will ridicule him mercilessly for his religious beliefs (there was some controversy when he agreed with John Hagee about some "intolerant" Christian dogma), and his support of teaching intelligent design. I like the fact that he generally didn't back down. But whether he'll make it on a national level is hard to say.

Threadkiller

Funny link TK.

And great description of Mildred by Ace.

Earlier this evening my 7yo daughter informed me that "Rick Perry is trying to destroy our schools." I tried to explain about living within one's means and how the state needs to spend less money, but I don't know if it got through.

Perry ain't perfect by any stretch but I admire him for not pandering to the spendaholics when it would be so easy to do.

Want to see something irritating that a local arist came up with during the school budget fights these last few weeks? Texans grit your teeth:

Let's have a series of votes at the convention like the old days and generate excitement for the 2 remaining months. By then everyone will be sick to death of Obama. CH:
The incredible part is that Andrew and Cheri Young went along with this scheme for months because thought Edwards had so much power. What kind of enabling goof-ball behavior was that? Per Paul Bedard at Washington Whispers, Michelle Obama wants to plant another White House garden - this one for cut flowers.

"Dowling says the first lady’s goal is “American style” displays that aren’t formal. “What she’s indicated to me is that she wants this feeling of garden style, natural, casual elegance,” the florist says. Dowling approaches those objectives in how she poses the cut flowers and even the vase they’re in, sometimes gluing items like little red potatoes to a vase to make it look natural."

Yeah, nothing says natural like little red potatoes artificially glued to a vase.

Arghhhh! That should take care of pleasant dreams tonight.

I leave early tomorrow morning to visit my son and family in the Seattle area until the 4th of June. It will be almost a year since my d-i-l died shortly after her fifty-second birthday. Our son has a May birthday, too, and we'll try to carry on without the heart of the family. I'll see if there's any Champpipp to be had for our party!

I hope the media follow DSK as he flees the country. He should get all the attention he deserves. "Schweinskopf" is too good for the likes of this evil scoundrel. Pfui!

Sara (Pal2Pal)

I'm trying to catch up. My Blackberry Storm bit the dust this afternoon. Keyboard just quit, couldn't change screens, dial out, or look anything up. So I headed down to our brand new Verizon store 1 block from my house. It just opened 2 weeks ago. Not a single customer, where the other store in town is always packed and takes an hour or more just to be waited on.

Anyway, 5 1/2 hours later, I have a new Droid 4G phone with an 8 megapix camera and some super neat features, including a flashlight. 18 gigs of memory. Plus 3 LG Vortex Droids, for son, d-i-l and one for the 14 year old grandson. Got those three for a total of $50. It is amazing what you can get when everyone is due for an upgrade. Best part, mine was a swap out since my old phone wasn't working at all. So it really amounts to 4 for $50, and I didn't even have to pay that, the son paid. Now I have to learn how to operate the new one and all will be right with the world again.

"If that is true, then there is a simple explanation for his recklessness: [Edwards] may been, consciously or unconsciously, looking for a way out."

I've never put much stock in the whole idea of willful self-destruction. I think both folks in that marriage put ambition first; the good cop, bad cop routine was a near perfect fit. Edwards doubtless had women falling all over him, and I'd bet the recklessness was like icing on cake. He had a wife and staff who would lie through their teeth for him, and did, a press inclined to cover for him, and role models like the despicable Dodd/Kennedy duo who had been publicly groping anybody who struck their fancies for years. There were plenty of reasons to think he could get away with almost anything.

Obama's Mideast Speech Offers Punishment, Praise

In a primary thrust of his address, Obama also was announcing aid for Egypt and Tunisia, the two nations seen as models while protests for freedoms elsewhere have been crushed.

Collectively, Obama's economic proposals will account for much of what's new in a speech that, by design, is intended to look back and let him put his imprint on the massive change across the Middle East and North Africa over the last six months.

Though both bin Laden and the West have supported the protest movements, their ends are very different. The West hopes the movement will lead to democratic reforms. Speaking of choosing wine for a wedding, here's something I posted elsewhere almost 4 years ago to this date:

I was picking out the wines for my older daughter's wedding reception (only frustrating because I wish I could've done a taste test for it; I don't think there were very many "wrong" choices) and, when done, thought wtf and went down to my basement to reward myself with a bottle that I'd either been given as a gift or just stuffed one down there to age for the future.

I picked one that my younger daughter had given me as a local product from around Santa Cruz; it was a red and we were having beef. Hobbyist that I am, I didn't realize what I had in my hand until a took a second drink and thought "This is something seriously good" and have been savouring it ever since. It's a Ridge 2003 Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon and obviously my daughter chose well.

I tried tasting as many of the selected wines as possible at the reception without getting completely hammered (which I didn't on that very festive day) and can say that the Brooklyn Botanical Garden probably gave me a list in which there were no poor choices.

I suspect that 60% in France doesn't mean quite the same thing as it does here. Porchlight

For Patrick O'Brian fans - you may remember mentions of the wine called sillery in the Aubrey/Maturin novels. I got really interested in this a couple of years ago and did some research. It turns out Sillery is a town in the Champagne region and sillery (the wine) refers to still wine made in that area. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was quite popular, but now almost no still wine is made in Champagne anymore, only bubbly. Pretty much impossible to find outside France. I was disappointed.

Well, a couple of months later a gal friend of mine was over and we were having some wine and somehow, late in the evening, we popped a bottle of Champagne that had been given as a gift and I'd been saving. We didn't get very far into it before it was time for bed, so I carelessly stuck it in the fridge minus its cork. A day or so later I thought oh no, this was a pretty nice bottle and now it's gone to waste. So just to see, I poured a glass. Wouldn't you know, it was now the most delicious still wine! Basically Chardonnay, which makes it sound less exciting, but brighter and more mineral-y than what's usually sold here.

So if you want to know what sillery tastes like, get yourself a good bottle of Champagne, uncork or decant it and still it in your fridge for a day or so. It's really worth a try.
