The Times follows the woes of poor Anthony Weiner, including this laugher:
One of Mr. Weiner’s most emotional apologies was delivered to former President Bill Clinton, who officiated at his wedding in July and is extremely close with the congressman’s wife, Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The Clintons are deeply unhappy about the situation and with Mr. Weiner, people who had been told of their thinking said. Mr. Clinton declined to comment.
I can only imagine Wild Bill's disappointment. He probably had the same reaction I have when watching the NBA - if you are going to be called for a foul anyway, make sure there is some hard contact.
Well - I assume Bill officiated at the wedding because he was a great "get", not because he is any symbol of marital commitment. Maybe Charlie Sheen can someday host a Weiner Bar Mitzvah.
Napolitano is a former judge. A hardcore libertarian who seems to put his political philosophy over his judicial one quite often.

Snacked up Frederick with some pretzels and a soda after his morning visiting Fort Stanwix and our B-52. He now knows B-52s are big and that soldiers drilled in the heat of the day in 1776 with their muskets.
He saw the pages made, the presses start, and papers come noisily off the press. Then it was off to the Savoy for a real lunch with fresh garlic bread. Pleasant conversation about everything with JiB and E.
Frederick, during lunch completed his drawing which was hung before we left right opposite a cartoon sketched by Johnny Hart of B.C. and Wizard of Id fame.

ABC News
New York Rep. Anthony Weiner says in a statement that he sent explicit photos of himself. He made the statement Wednesday as an X-rated photo that he purportedly took of himself turned up on the Internet. The photo, which shows a man's genitals, was published by a website after conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart showed it to the hosts of Sirius XM radio's Opie & Anthony Show.

JiB, I do indeed use the vermouth, but very sparingly, maybe about one part in twelve or fifteen (done by seaman's eye). I use Noilly Prat and not Martini & Rossi, because although I detect no difference in tast the NP is darker, and imparts that classic smoky appearance. And I highly recommend an anchovy-stuffed olive (available for $5.95 a jar from, of all places, Amazon.com. Shake forty times--it absolutely must be ice cold. And once you shake it, pour immediately: a proper Martini abhors water.

It is probably a good sign for the Obama marriage though. I think there's some old joke about - after being married awhile, the wife's underwear could be used as a spare sail in a pinch.
Posted by: Janet | June 08, 2011 at 09:53 PM
I do believe we've had this very conversation before -- and so I quote the very same article I did before.
"Each American generation has felt the need to drink a dryer martini than did the generation that came before. It is this twisted mockery of the American dream that has led to the present state of affairs. A glass of straight gin can now be served without warning as a martini.
"The deconstruction of the dry martini is now complete. Even in the best case one’s martini ambitions cannot be realized absent meticulous instruction to the bartender. Harder cases may necessitate a Platonic dialogue. And, when best efforts are greeted with blank stares, cultural reeducation may be the only solution. So I call on the martini tastemakers and cognoscenti to spread the word: no gratuity should be given for martinis without vermouth. It’s not too late to prove the fatalists wrong. The alternative is mixing your own drinks."

Thanks for that, Hit. I had not seen it, but I did enjoy a series of nightly Martinis, accompanied by civilized argumentation about proper techniques and recipes, with Mr. Bork for about a week back around 1980.
My father was a master of the Churchillian scoff at the vermouth, as if it were some unmanly dilution of the true essence of the thing. "You pass the cork of the vermouth bottle above the glass," and the like. But it isn't a dilution at all: it's essential to the thing; it's what makes it a cocktail. And my father, after all the appropriate homilies, would cut it at around six to one. (Bork believes--erroneously, of course--that vodka in lieu of gin is itself a corruption. I can no longer tolerate gin, but find the premium vodkas vaer friendly.)

something I discovered purely by experimentation: A good gin martini is made even better with a little Aperol mixed in with the vermouth and gin. Proportions: 50 % gin (Tangeray or Beefeaters) 25% vermouth (incredibly dry or sweet) 25 % Aperol. ( an Italian aperetif.) Makes a fine drink, served up in a cocktail glass.
Posted by: peter | June 08, 2011 at 11:10 PM

Just saw O'Reilly. In a segment concerning Weiner he had on2 Dems: Bob Beckel and a female Dem spokesperson.
O'Reilly said Weiner was the Dem out there pushing the Dem message and now he's gone, and Beckel and the gal's talking point was that nobody outside of New York even ever heard of Weiner and O'Reilly is dead wrong on this. Amazing.
Then O'Reilly pushes them as to who now is a well respected and lovable sort of Dem who can fill that public Dem spokesman role.
The girl unbelievably answers "Charlie Rangel" And when it's Beckel's turn he answers "Bill Clinton."
Simply stunning.

Narciso,
Stunningly as well Fagan 2 days back said that after a long time off and after doing a lot of thinking he sincerely thinks that Sarah leaving Office when she did was now exactly the right thing to do and he was wrong to criticize her as a quitter for it. He was extremely complementary of her special gifts as a motivator and leader and charismatic individual and he appeared to be about 90% back on her bandwagon. Very strange to hear.
Nobody was a harsher critic of Sarah than Fagan was. He did very significant damage in denigrating her reputation with the Alaskan Public, so I really don't know what to make of him now. He's 6 to 9 AM, so they scratched Laura Ingraham completely, but thankfully only scratched 1 hour of Dennis Prager.
