MSNBC serves a function. There's nothing wrong wth bias that's openly stated, because someone can take their personal grains of salt on what's said. Hidden bias successfully disguised as objectivity is a problem.
That said, I'm not watching. I have lots of movies recorded from TCM I need to get through.
I agree with Appalled-- MSNBC is an open advocay shop for 'progressive' politics and the Dem party. All's fair. 'Course that's why nobody watches MSNBC. The real villains are the ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN, NYT, WAPO, Time and Fox etc etc that lie about 'fairness'. Everyone has bias, organizations have an agenda. To claim otherwise is a lie-- always has been.
I don't have a problem with their pundits being liberal or nutty, both most of the time. I have a problem with their "news" people being liberal or nutty, both most of the time.
I think the actual news people at Fox would be at home on any news station. Think Major Garrett. Steve Harrigan.
The real villains are the ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN, NYT, WAPO, Time and Fox etc etc that lie about 'fairness'.
I disagree, a bit.
Although I have a conservative bias, I think FOX really *is* more fair than the others, particularly in the news coverage (as opposed to the opinion shows). I believe that FOX more often covers two sides of stories than the others, and regularly brings out aspects of stories that the other bury because it doesn't fit their agenda.
Even the opinion shows, such as Hannity, more often feature guests from "the opposition" than such shows on other networks.
Reasonable people with basic common sense find "liberal opinion" always wrong when compared to facts; childish in its suppositions, and dangerous when forced upon societies. Truth and facts are not important to liberals.
Case in point (and this sort of thing is common with lib media):
PD-- don't disagree with you that FOXNEWS is less worse. But 15 years ago Roger Ailes had an agenda-- capture millions of viewers that were turned off by the liberal media hegemony with center-right programming. reading between the lines from narciso's link: does this mean that Palin threatened to no show if Christine was disinvited? so to get Palin to show, the organizers had to reinvite Christine?
((Multiple media outlets reported this morning that Palin had backed out of the “Restoring America” event, but still planned to be in Iowa on Saturday. The rally’s undergone a lot of upheaval this week: Failed Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell was invited to speak before Palin, then had the invitation rescinded, and on Tuesday night, “humbly re-accepted the re-invitation” to speak, according to her Twitter account.
Crow called the handling of O’Donnell a “mistake.”
))
I hope my reading between the lines of narciso's link is correct because my first reaction to reading that Christine had been disinvited was to wonder if Palin had something to do with it, which was my first potentially serious disappointment in her, thinking her mind perhaps had been infiltrated by wanton Rovian mind darts.
This is the continuing saga of the Jack-Up Oil Rig, hauled from the Gulf around the tip of South America to Alaska. It was stalled in Limbo in Canada awaiting approval from our Government for its initial approved Jones Act Waiver, then denied a second one after Napolitano said they should ask for a new one.
As near as I can figure, the Jones Act maintains that even when the Rig left the Gulf of Mexico, it had to have been on a US flagged ship even if it was stopping in Canada, so officials are now looking to try to fine them for that part of the journey north.
"The Jones Act requires cargoes moved between U.S. ports to be in American-built and -operated vessels even if the voyage is broken with a stop at a foreign port, as occurred with the Blake 151 movement."
The head of Escopeta has stepped down as a result of the Bruhaha.
Re the Jones Act, just last week I linked a story similar to this one, about the President waiving the Jones Act 46 times 2 months back to ship Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve on foreign ships, for political reasons.
It is obvious that the Feds and the Enviro' don't want any drilling done in Cook Inlet and they don't want this Drill Rig up here. It also surprises me, (but it shouldn't) that the Alaskan Senator standing up for Escopeta Drilling, is Dem Mark Begich. Lisa appears absent from the fray.
I know I don't know all the facts and I don't trust my ADN, but the State also appears to be mad at the Drillers for not complying with Corp of Engineer Regulations, but the Corp of Engineers say the Rig has complied with their Regulations.
The main thing I take from this is that if Escopeta had any sense they'd sign a deal with Putin and the Russians also and just tell the Feds to shove their Jones Act where the sun don't shine.
Off with the boys to bar-hop Singapore.
If anyone can figure all this out, please let me know. Cheers.
I got the impression it was Palin who didn't want O'Donnell to speak, because the rumor of Palin's potential no-show came after, rather than before, the "re-invitation" to O'Donnell. But no reporting about Palin can be trusted worth a damn until it's been confirmed five different ways. Some of these screwups may be her fault, but I think more often it's just the insanity of the rumor mill where she is concerned.
Regarding the organizing of the event, it's okay with me if grassroots operations aren't always flawlessly run - feature not bug imho.
All of this may boost the standing of Messrs. Perez and Halperin in the Obama administration. It's less good for the rest of us. These settlements include requirements that banks lend to minorities at below-market rates and, in effect, dish out cash to politically favored "community groups." It's a good bet that many of these loans will eventually go bad.
Since I am now a racist according to the CBC, then what do you call Miss Maxy and her rant? Is she the poster girl for the dependency nation or entitlement universe? If the CBC was truly concerned about the effect of government, or the reduction of it, on its constituents then perhaps they need to provide a better education to those they want to serve. LUN
PD, a friend of mine had a young teenaged son almost die because of a broken major blood vessel in his head that was freakishly damaged through mild horseplay with his sister. The mother's life, while dealing with having her son in an induced coma, was turned upside down by the nanny staters accusing her of beating her child.
We are so far away from the state not intruding in the lives of innocent citizens just trying to live their lives unimpeded.
PD, at my hospital they ask if there is anyone you are afraid of. I always answer the same way: "Barack Obama".
Oh Jane, you're the best! I'm going to steal that. LOL
By the way, there are signs going up all over commercial and residential neighborhoods here, preaching "We will no longer tolerate Domestic Violence" and "If you are a victim, report Domestic Violence. Is this just a Hawaii thing, or is this the case across the nation? If you were a tourist driving around here you'd have the impression that the men of 'Paradise' must be beasts.
An Ohio woman and her boyfriend can sue a laptop-tracking company that recorded their sexually explicit communications in an effort to identify thieves who stole the computer the woman was using.
U.S. District Judge Walter Rice ruled last week against Absolute Software, which provides software and services for tracking stolen computers. Absolute sought a summary judgment in its favor, insisting that one of its theft recovery agents acted properly when he captured sexually explicit images of Susan Clements-Jeffrey communicating via webcam with her boyfriend and passed them to police in an effort to recover the stolen computer.
But the judge found that there were grounds to believe Absolute had gone too far, and that a jury might reasonably decide that it had violated the plaintiffs’ privacy and broken the law. The case raises an important issue about the length that someone can legally go to recover stolen goods.
OMG - Obama and his dumb as a rock Press Secretary are firmly ensconced in a completely surreal alternate reality:
Carney said that Obama had chosen to speak directly to Congress in hopes that members had been chastened and softened after hearing from angry constituents over the August break.
The push to find sex abuse everywhere is paid for by you. The local health authorities kept calling me when I insisted I had never bee until I repeatedly told them where to stuff it. Every time I said no they asked if I was alone and whether there was anyone home scaring me. I suspect the all men are beasts drive is affecting the allocation of local le and prosecutorial operationstoo
I cannot believe that moron scheduled his little talk during the republican debate. I hope Boehner says "No the House is busy at that hour". He is such a petulant thug. I bet the only thing he gets involved with on a day to day basis is how to "get the republicans".
They should switch the debate format to a Mystery Science Theater-style running commentary on Jughead's speech, with all of the candidates commenting live on his BS.
Are all these phone calls being funded by the stimulus?
The reason I ask is that I got a call the other day from the National Marine Fisheries Agency and after asking my name and if I lived in Flagler County, Florida, they wanted to know if I fished (yes), then they wanted to know how many people lived in my house, (none of your business and what does that have to do with fishing?), to which they thanked me for my time and hung up. IOW, we have people on the Federal Families payroll with nothing better to do and find out how many people in a single household fish.
I guess the Census Dept. forgot to put that question on the latest census and the NMFA is making up for that discrepancy.
Is the CEO of Gibson a pathological liar (in saying that the wood is demonstrably legal) or is the Obama Administration engaging in a more fascist bullying?
How many cases can we let pass by with an "I'm sure there is some explanation" before we are forced to accept that the Democratic leadership is fascistic?
Jane -- disagree with you here. NOBODY will listen to the Obamaniac, even Libs tune him out now. Let him have his talk. THEN Marco Rubio delivers a quick 'this is all wrong talk' and says that he will work with Senate Dems to pass the House Reg repeal and jobs bills. THEN the Repub candidiates all explain why the Obamaniac is all wrong while Indy voters are watching.
Then the candidates should refuse and move on (no pun intended).
Its going to be a "gothcha" debate to begin with and this is a perfect opportunity to back out with a legitimate excuse. No matter how tough and straight talking you are (Perry) or how smart you are (Gingrich) or how cantankerous you are (Paul) these mutts at PMSNBC will find a way to make you look weak, dumb and stuttering.
Be prepared to answer at least 5 of Keller's questions before you're even asked about whether you still beat your wife or husband.
Yes Jane; the DNC refuses to let Fox sponsor a debate. Why should the party of stoopid not play the same game. They have a clear precedent to justify it.
The Anchoress has a great post about why Boehner should let Obama speak before the GOP debate:
What the GOP needs to remember is that the Democrats no longer govern; they just maneuver, and they do it brilliantly. The GOP needs to learn how to do it.
ISTM ElJefe's joint session jobs speech gives the GOP candidates an opportunity to beat up on what is sure to be an inane message instead of each other.
The more I think about it, Jane, the more I think this maneuver will backfire. Each of Oblamer's speeches have shown a steady decline in viewers. His poll numbers are also in major decline. His "speeches" are boring, petty, crapola. He doesn't have a clue what to do about the economy or how to create even one job.
Plus, he stabs NBC and Politico in the back - and they will accept the wound because they are sycophants.
The fact that Fox of all people, lingered on the Ephesians question, for even
a fraction of a second, while
Europe in melting down, Salafism is on the march, and
we are mired in this economic
quagmire, tells you what a joke these debates have become

PD, at my hospital they ask if there is anyone you are afraid of. I always answer the same way: "Barack Obama".

LMAO. Oh, they're angry all right - at Obama.

Posted by: Jane | August 31, 2011 at 01:48 PM
They should switch the debate format to a Mystery Science Theater-style running commentary on Jughead's speech, with all of the candidates commenting live on his BS.
Posted by: Dave (in MA) | August 31, 2011 at 01:53 PM
Boehner should say "the house is busy until 10 days after you publicly disclose the enacting legislation for your plan."
Posted by: henry | August 31, 2011 at 01:55 PM
Dave that would be a stroke of genius; which means that the party of stoopid won't even consider it.

What you want to bet MSNBC and Politico move their debate without input from the candidates?

Is the CEO of Gibson a pathological liar (in saying that the wood is demonstrably legal) or is the Obama Administration engaging in a more fascist bullying?
How many cases can we let pass by with an "I'm sure there is some explanation" before we are forced to accept that the Democratic leadership is fascistic?
Posted by: Jim Ryan | August 31, 2011 at 01:59 PM
If FNC were hosting the debate, they would delay airing for an hour and then the usual Republican rebuttal, could be the candidates.
But, since it is NBC/Politico, they will probably just kowtow to their Lord and Master.

Lose-Lose for zero.
Posted by: NK | August 31, 2011 at 02:04 PM
Sue,
Then the candidates should refuse and move on (no pun intended).

Posted by: Captain Hate | August 31, 2011 at 02:11 PM
The Anchoress has a great post about why Boehner should let Obama speak before the GOP debate:
What the GOP needs to remember is that the Democrats no longer govern; they just maneuver, and they do it brilliantly. The GOP needs to learn how to do it.

"is anyone you are afraid of."
from Michael Moore "Why do you have a gun? What are you afraid of? What is that thing that we’re afraid of that we want to have a gun in the house?"
"But here’s the real kicker: Michael Moore has bodyguards and his bodyguards are armed."

Posted by: Jane | August 31, 2011 at 02:53 PM
The more I think about it, Jane, the more I think this maneuver will backfire. Each of Oblamer's speeches have shown a steady decline in viewers. His poll numbers are also in major decline. His "speeches" are boring, petty, crapola. He doesn't have a clue what to do about the economy or how to create even one job.
Plus, he stabs NBC and Politico in the back - and they will accept the wound because they are sycophants.
Posted by: centralcal | August 31, 2011 at 02:57 PM
This is a real dilemma for NBC. Have the debate after Zero's speech? I don't think so--too much ammunition for the candidates.
