Jane, fear not. Oblamer is a total failure at everything he does (except with the MFM). Let him bypass Congress. Everything he touches turns to dust or bankruptcy. The agencies he is turning to are as corrupt and incompetent as he is. They don't "create" anything, they just "waste."

Jane

Yeah they should put all the people accusing us of wanting to lynch them with the people who says we spat on them.

Tell them to get bent.

PD

Maybe Obama will use his jobs speech to define what he means by "shovel-ready" jobs.

But I suppose the cat would be out of the bag if he admitted it means "jobs created to shovel cash to the unions."

PD

Everything he touches turns to dust

I'd use a different word than "dust."

Coming this October:

Michelle on the Cover of Essence (too large for me to insert - help, somebody).

Seriously? Let me count the ways!

Sarah Palin's Gift

We see a different Sarah Palin, one who has sounded a theme that, at a time when our politics have become so divisive, strikes us as the route to civil society. This is the theme of constitutional conservatism.

This is too funny!!

Doh! Obama labor secretary buys Canadian made car

"Ms. Solis expounds at length about her extensive tours of Detroit, the great pride the workers (many of whom are… *gasp* women!) take in making fine quality American cars. She cites this as proof of “the recovery,” presumably to claim that the policies of the Obama administration are working out just fine, thank you very much. Sadly, the car she is featuring is very nearly 100% Canadian. (Hey… at least she’s doing something to help somebody’s economy.)"

Hahahahah!!

D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan has accused a District HIV/AIDS service provider of spending nearly $330,000 in federal tax dollars to open a strip club.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, Nathan said Miracle Hands Inc. promised the city it was using the cash to renovate a warehouse in Northeast for use as a job training center for residents with HIV/AIDS. Instead, the warehouse was turned into the Stadium Club, a strip club that continues to operate, the suit says. Miracle Hands shares an address with the club, according to the company's website.

My humor must be wearing off on to you.

Dave (in MA)

14 actually, since the election is early in Nov.

Obama will propose the usual "Green Jobs" "Infrastructure" etc.
-he will invoke the bipartisan deficit commission's call for tax hikes
-he will then say "you guys do it" that way he can get away with saying he had a plan but never putting one to paper and also passing off the responsibility

That's why there's the hype for the "much anticipated plan" there is no real plan, the anticipation is for the speech about a plan that doesn't actually exist.

centralcal

One last comment on Michelle's Essence cover photo. Notice her smile looks kinda sorta vampire-ish? (I know, October, Halloween, etc etc)

OldTimer

Ha, centracal: Essence’s Editor-in-Chief, said, “Michelle Obama is the quintessential Essence woman; impressively defining herself on her own terms.”

The only impressive definition I've seen from Mooch is her uncanny ability to define photographically and etiquette-wise everything an American first lady should never aspire to be.

OldTimer

Oops--"centralcal".. :)

centralcal

No kidding, Old Timer.

centralcal

Found a smaller photo that I think will fit:

(from Essence website)

centralcal

Okay, I can stop anytime . . . I told you it was gonna be all about her "sacrificin...", but wait, there is more:

In the article, “The Leading Lady,” she reflects on what she calls the “big, bright light” of her power as First Lady -- and she shares her mission to impart a critical message to young women: that where she is now is attainable with hard work. She recounts her emotional trip to Africa, providing exclusive images for ESSENCE readers which document her various stops and what they meant to her personally.

Hhhmm, safari trip to Africa - isn't that the trip a group has filed an FOIA on to find out exactly how much it cost?

Sure, but we can't let that stop us. If TM took that route, we'd have no NYT or Krugman threads or threads on any other topics where people or organizations behave as expected, and we make fun of them for it. :)

OldTimer

Hilarious, JiB!

Why You Should Put Yourself First!
by Michelle Obama

If there's one thing I've learned as First Lady, it's that ain't nobody putting the ladies first. It's all "put down the bbq sauce before the vegetable garden photo op" and "we have to alter the Vera Wang to show off your hips when they give you some other Woman of the Year award" and "why you gotta take a separate plane back from the Vineyard". In three years, I had but one real vacation, and even then I had all the security hassling me all over Spain. I'm not complaining; I know all the Essence readers face the same kind of challenges.

And it's not like our husbands are any help. I know, you see Barack on the tv and you think he's the bomb. He shows me the press clippings. They make him look alright. But in person? For one thing he never eats, which makes even a fashion icon like me self-conscious (so you can imagine what it does to my youngest, who's going through a "fatty" phase). And his idea of romance is watching basketball on the couch. It can get me going to see some big, powerful, rich black men, but I don't know why he thinks it does his skinny butt any good.

So if nobody else going to look out for you, you have to look out for yourself. Even in the job I have, I find ways to do it. Like when I got here, there was no per diem. They thought I would just eat at the state dinners or whatever. So I'm like, "Hello? Between-meal snacks?" And now I get a couple hundred bucks a day for emergencies. It's not much, but it'll tide me over until we get out.

One thing you don't want to do is be selfish. I see that all the time because we have to meet Republicans so often. Don't think you have to be like them. This job has taught me that you and me are united by the fact that we are all part of the same great thing: the community of African-American women. So stand up for yourself by doing the right thing for our community, and vote for Barack and I, campaign for us, volunteer for us, and keep us where we're at. Because the best way to put yourself first is to put all of us first, and that means putting me first.

Something exciting is coming to WhiteHouse.gov. It’s called We the People and it will significantly change how the public — you! — engage with the White House online.
Our Constitution guarantees your right to petition our government. Now, with We the People, we’re offering a new way to submit an online petition on a range of issues — and get an official response.
We’re announcing We the People before it’s live to give folks time to think about what petitions they want to create, and how they are going to build the support to get a response.

How about a petition to have Obama stay in Bali permanently.

“My story to young people around this country and around the world is: Don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Because I was there, and this is attainable. There is no magic to this. It is hard work….”

More on the Gibson case:

Mr. Nix went to Madagascar in June 2008 on a trip organized by environmental groups to talk to local officials about selling responsibly harvested wood to makers of musical instruments. Afterward, in emails later seized by the government, he referred to "widespread corruption and theft of valuable woods" and the possibility of buying ebony and rosewood from Madagascar on "the grey market."

In a June 4 court filing, Jerry Martin, U.S. Attorney for central Tennessee, quoted the emails, and said "Nix knew that the grey market meant purchasing contraband."

I had a teacher say that English and German were both "gutteral" sounding languages and closely resembled each other.

I took 4 years of French and 3 years of German in high school and I found German far easier to semi-learn. I was going to say master, but that would be pushing it a bit. I can still read both with some struggle, but speaking is long gone. I find I've had more use for both in the last couple years on line than I did for the previous 45 years since my last classes in either.

That said, HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRAU!

The pre-game extravaganza is a huge deal, scheduled to be televised the hour before kick-off. I wonder who's on the hook for the unaired ads if Obama commandeers their spot? This came up in conversation with Elliott* yesterday. Neither of us has watched a speech or press conference by Obama since he's been president. *Elliott is with his grandmother today, who is also celebrating her birthday this fine day.

glasater

Welcome home Frau!

OK--so this is going into OT territory and recipes but here goes:

I picked up some Jazz apples at Walmart last winter and found them to taste terrific.
Walmart only carried them for a short time so I haunted the other super markets in the area to find them. Finally a couple of months ago I found them at our local Albertson's store and now at Safeway.

They are a cross between a Royal Gala and a Braeburn.
Don't think they are raised here in the states and so far only come from New Zealand.

That's all I know about them and was wondering if you had heard of this variety.
The flavor is superb and they don't get 'mealy' making it a great wintering apple.

Sue

Happy birthday, Elliott's grandmother!
