Jane, who has moved well beyond JOM fame, reminisces about paying off her law school student loans at age forty-eight and prompts a lefty to step in it. The set-up:
In a conversation [at a left-wing blog] where I suggested we stop borrowing money and instead get rid of wasteful government programs like “cowboy poetry” a retired philosophy teacher who never tires of talking about how smart he is responded this way:
{5852} This, typed by someone who by admission still owes on student
loans, doubtless gummint guarantied, at the age of 48.
If the author of {5852} were *really* any good, she’d have got
through school on a free ride through earning scholarships and
fellowships. Of course that would have required genuine work. And we see no talent for that here in the Cafe.
Well, well. Dare we ask about Michelle Obama, and her frequent whining about the student loans incurred by her and her hubby? I sense a bipartisan moment as we all agree on "no talent" for "genuine work".
Greetings from NYC. I knew Jane before she was famous.

Zero is your jobs number this AM. How fitting.
Probably the best thing we could do at this point is scrap ObamaCare. The mandates (on states and business) taxes, regulations, fiscal problems and uncertainties tied up in that bill have to be a significant headwind to Main Street business hiring.
Dodd/Frank a close second.

That philosophy perfesser seems to be arguing that education loans go only to substandard and/or lazy students. I suppose he thinks therefore we should abolish the loan programs, right?

Even more troubling issue about the student loan industry is that the entire industry was socialized without any good reason. Numerous lending institutions offered student loans for decades. Obama came along, and they were all put out of business by a massive government takeover.

Valerie Jarrett, a close friend of the Barack and Michelle Obama is the former CEO of Habitat Company, which managed Grove Parc, a federally subsidized apartment complex on Chicago's South Side that can be accurately described as a slum. Jarrett is now a senior adviser to the president.
On Wednesday with great fanfare the awarding of a $30.5 million federal grant to revitalize Grove Parc--by tearing it down--was announced.

In fact, no mention of her role in mismanaging the unhappy homes was mentioned by the Chicago Sun-Times or the Chicago Tribune.

And that $30.5 million will go right into the pockets of the connected builders, who will then turn around and pump a big chunk back into the local Dem poltical machine. That's how the "Affordable Housing" scam works. The only people who get hurt are those who actually live in the substandard housing, until they are kicked out and shuffled off to other substandard housing. But who could be heartless enough to argue against "Affordable Housing?"
"Green Energy" is just an minor variation of this 50 year old Chicago con.

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser....

I guess life imitates art, if we've seen any film or TV program about the CIA in the last forty years, the idea that there are really only 300 or so AQ, even in the NorthWest Frontier, much less world wide, seems a fundamental misunderstanding of how Salafi and Wahhabi militants operate.

Anyway I am now reading that the Information sector of the economy recorded 48K of lost jobs last month, and 45K of those were striking Verizon workers who have now returned to work.
So the numbers next month will no doubt be explained by an "unexpected" surge in employment, in the magnitude of this extra 45K.
Why do you get UE insurance if you voluntarily go on strike? Besides that Democrats wanted to buy union votes I mean.
Posted by: GMAX | September 02, 2011 at 04:29 PM
Really? You can strike and draw unemployment? Well count me in then. I'm going to form a union of one and go on strike.
Posted by: Sue | September 02, 2011 at 04:36 PM
Claims were expected to fall partly because of the end of a two-week strike at Verizon Communications Inc. in which thousands filed for unemployment benefits even though they were probably not eligible.
Shoot. I just disbanded my union. No use in having one if I have to work anyway.

I don't think we have to worry too much about whether FEMA will pay blue states. The question is whether FEMA (i.e., "we") should be paying anybody. I wonder what the Founders would think about FEMA.
(Actually, I lie. I don't wonder about that. They'd surely think they f-d up by writing a Constitution that could be warped that far in just a couple of hundred years.)
Imagine if we could bring the Founders back for another Constitutional Convention? Talk about a target-rich environment.
