Texas Governor Rick Perry makes his national debut tonight (8 PM Eastern, MSNBC). How many viewers will tuning in expecting to see Katy Perry? It doesn't matter - I would back either one over The One.
POST GAME: I thought Rick Perry and Mitt Romney did well; I also thought that Central Casting did a great job in sending over "Distinguished American Presidents". As an aside, Jon Huntsman looked like a failed Central Casting effort, unless they were asked to provide the weaselly look of that President who kept betraying America and getting caught out by Jack Bauer.
Rick Santorum looked like Ferris Bueller's hapless sidekick; Michelle Bachmann looked like a parody of a crazed right-winger, as if her hair had been styled by the crew of Saturday Night Live.
I assume Newt has no chance at the nomination, but he is always interesting. Herman Cain might be running for Vice President. Ron Paul seemed even more of a kook than usual; something about having a fellow Texan there did not bring out his best.
Anyone think Sarah Palin won't be watching this live?

Obama's Economic Trifecta: How The President Helped Kill Progressivism, Capitalism And Moderation
Gives more credit to old-school progressives than I think is warranted, but nicely points out how Obama favors affluent progressives over the lower classes he professes to want to help.

Why is a Republican debate airing on MSNBC? We're never going to win over their regular viewer.
Posted by: bgates | September 07, 2011 at 07:42 PM
MSNBC ploy to increase viewership to three.

MSNBC can thank "The Five" for the first 2 viewers, PD.
Ext, thanks!
Posted by: Threadkiller | September 07, 2011 at 07:56 PM
Phew, my tree party meeting ended just in time!
And I'm pissed that they agreed to be on NBC where all the questions will be: When did you stop beating your wife?"
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 07:57 PM
Chris Matthews really is a tool.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 07:58 PM
Have they crowned Huntsman the winner yet?
Posted by: Ann | September 07, 2011 at 07:58 PM
They have to debate facing Air Force one. That's pretty cool.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:01 PM
Immediate slap on Perry. Oh good he equates Williams with Obama, I like it! 1 point for Perry
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:04 PM
Point to Romney, Williams looks like a tool. It's not the candidates v each other, it's the candidates v MSNBC.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:07 PM
Oh now let's make it Perry v Romney. Now Romney starts talking about how great Texas is. Not a bad exchange for either of them.
Ron Paul looks like he is going to fall over.
Where is everyone?

Present.
Posted by: Extraneus | September 07, 2011 at 08:12 PM
What in the world is slowbama thinking while watching this debate? Besides hoping Huntsman wins.
Posted by: Threadkiller | September 07, 2011 at 08:13 PM
I don't like Huntsman.
Posted by: Sara (Pal2Pal) | September 07, 2011 at 08:14 PM

Palin is not there, so no use watching, IMO.

Williams said he wanted to be devil's advocate.
We already think of you that way Brian!
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 08:18 PM
I think they are all nailing it, and the moderators look like asses.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:19 PM
Newt was just good.
NBC having technical difficulties....
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 08:20 PM
That translates to, "I will ask any gotcha questions I like, so get over it, Newt." Just my guess.
Posted by: Barbara | September 07, 2011 at 08:21 PM
HEH..Jane , you are our heroine. We never have to watch this merde again with you as point gal.
Posted by: Clarice | September 07, 2011 at 08:21 PM
Well I'm just commenting. It's really worth watching I think. I'm impressed with all of them so far - except Huntsman who makes my skin crawl.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:24 PM
But Huntsman looks good...
Posted by: glasater | September 07, 2011 at 08:25 PM
I also love the fact that they are not attacking each other but rather the moron in chief despite how hard the moderators try.

Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:27 PM
So far, the moderators seem to be just taking the Dem. side.
I like Bachmann....strong take down of Obamacare.
Newt is being strong too.
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 08:27 PM
GO Newt again!!!!!
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:28 PM
JIB, Are you disappointed?
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:29 PM
Herman Cain is doing well also.
Posted by: glasater | September 07, 2011 at 08:30 PM
I like Rick Santorum too...an honorable man. He won't win & he isn't the strongest, but he is a good person....not many of those in politics.
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 08:34 PM
Holy smokes. What's gotten into Newt?
Still don't like him but being below the political Mendoza line becomes him.

I dunno, I think this is a great debate. Anyone watching will realize that there is an entirely different way to do things, in case they didn't know.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:43 PM
Soylent-
Paul has economic Tourette's. Every now and then words come out accurately. Silver dime was very close.

I am having to watch Rachel Madcow commercials? Sheesh...
Posted by: Sue | September 07, 2011 at 08:44 PM

Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:44 PM
I think being ruthless is a necessity for beating Obama. Perry definitely can be that
Posted by: mikey | September 07, 2011 at 08:45 PM
Newt understands that beating Obama is easy, it’s the damn press corpse we are running against.
He won the last debate for that reason, imo.
Posted by: Ann | September 07, 2011 at 08:45 PM
Preen Forward
Posted by: Threadkiller | September 07, 2011 at 08:45 PM
My God I just saw some guy (actually it turned out to be Rachel Maddow) i front of the Hoover Dam talking about how America can be great. Tell me I am dreaming.

Posted by: mikey | September 07, 2011 at 08:53 PM
Romney just wants to help. He just wants to help.
I like Cain alot, and it's darned unfortunate that he can't win. What a contrasting African American President he would be.
Also, doesn't it seem like the moderators are trying to get everyone to pounce on Perry? If you ever needed a reason to vote Perry, I think the media's fear of him would be a good one.
Posted by: Soylent Red | September 07, 2011 at 08:54 PM
NBC moderator is apparently a big fan of Cheney. Who knew?
Ron Paul has to get off the stage.

Rick Perry is Rick Perry. I like that Perry isn't backing away from what he has said or done as governor. If you don't like him, vote for Newt or Mitt. Personally, I didn't like Mitt's answer to the SS question, but I wouldn't freak out if Romney was president.
Posted by: Sue | September 07, 2011 at 08:57 PM
I feel the same way Sue.
Posted by: Jane | September 07, 2011 at 08:58 PM
Great answer from Mitt.
Posted by: Sue | September 07, 2011 at 08:59 PM
Romney sticking up for Perry. wow!
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 08:59 PM
What dictates are in Obamacare!!!! Turn the question around.
(I must admit I hated the push for that vaccine and was offended when the doctor pushed it on my eleven year old and I told em where to go.
Oh crap, Romney just did what I wanted. Did he?)
Posted by: Ann | September 07, 2011 at 08:59 PM
Santorum nails opt out vs opt in. I enjoyed that.
Posted by: Threadkiller | September 07, 2011 at 09:00 PM
You know the viewership of MSNBC are duct taping their heads right now to keep them from exploding.
Obama doesn't hav
Posted by: Soylent Red | September 07, 2011 at 09:00 PM
If Herman Cain was a politician then he would be the nominee, tomorrow. No one else is specific. He may be wrong but he has plans not opinions. And Ron Paul is more crazy and stupid than I ever thought. I am now concerned about his offspring, Rand.
Posted by: Jack is Back! | September 07, 2011 at 09:01 PM
Paul said something "blew his mind"...yeah, I'm thinkin' that happened awhile ago.
Posted by: Janet | September 07, 2011 at 09:02 PM

If I recall, it's "Chingate, puto." That might be a generous translation.
Posted by: MarkO | September 07, 2011 at 09:13 PM
I can't see what y'all see in Cain, who appears to me to have only one response "We need to fix it, not end it."
I think Mitt's doing better than I've ever seen him do, including his gentlemanly defense of Perry (who should have just said he was wrong, wrong, wrong about that awful exec. order).
Posted by: (Another) Barbara | September 07, 2011 at 09:13 PM
Did MSLSD hire a hispanic just to ask immigration questions? Rick Sanchez was available.
Posted by: Captain Hate | September 07, 2011 at 09:13 PM
I would like to remind Perry of the words of Han Solo:
Wookies tear the arms off people when they lose. Or when you get in the way of their tamale.
Posted by: Soylent Red | September 07, 2011 at 09:13 PM
Mitt with the pre-emptive shot? I like that.
