Rick Perry may not be up to all this debatin' and articulatin':
A spokesman for Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, whose candidacy has faltered after several poor debate appearances, said on Wednesday that he might not participate in some of the coming face-offs.
“We will look at each debate individually and then make a decision,” Mark Miner, the spokesman, told The Times’s Richard A. Oppel Jr.
I think if he skips the debates he may as well skip the rest of the nominating process, and that's not just me:
It’s not clear whether Mr. Perry could skip the debates without a steep political cost. By refusing to appear on a national stage now — after being criticized for his previous performances — he might open himself to charges that he is afraid to debate.
However...
When running for governor last year, Mr. Perry managed to avoid debating his Democratic rival, Bill White, by linking his participation to the issue of Mr. White’s release of financial disclosure information. Mr. Perry refused to debate until Mr. White, the former mayor of Houston, released more information. Mr. White accused Mr. Perry of being afraid to debate.
I think an incumbent who is known to the voters is in a much better spot to work that ploy than one of many contenders for the Republican throne.

Has anyone followed the story where Muslims are demanding that a Catholic university remove all Catholic/Christian religious symbols? BTW, this is a private school.
Well yes, it's obviously a Catholic school but unless they're Grove City College they probably receive federal funding. So they probably have to consider whether they want the DOJ crawling up their asses. I don't know that much about CU other than where it's located; I assume that they're less lib than the Georgetown dhimmis who strangely covered up the crosses when El JEFe spoke there. At some point you have to push back against these vermin.
Speaking of which, I'm not sure why the Maronite Patriarch of Lebanon bothered with a meeting with B+ Hussein. Go right to Israel if you want some help to set things right in that country that the rock worshipers are turning into their standard shithole of misery and destitution.

Yeah I knew that was the issue, Sara. The question that CU has to ask themselves is if they cave, which they certainly should not, what will be the next demand? Stop calling the school Catholic University? Build minarets? It won't end with this unless they say no way and end the discussion with that.

ew York firefighters removed about a dozen gasoline cans and six generators from Zuccotti Park, where Occupy Wall Street protesters have camped for almost six weeks, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
About 30 to 40 firefighters were sent to the park along with the police department’s community affairs unit, Bloomberg said today on his weekly WOR radio show.
The equipment, which helped power computers and mobile phones and keep people warm as temperatures dipped near freezing, are safety hazards and illegal, Bloomberg said. Forecasts call for rain and snow in the metropolitan area tomorrow.
“Our first two concerns are First Amendment and safety, and this was safety,” Bloomberg said. “People were courteous and understanding. The story of this morning is that there was no story.”
The material won’t be allowed back into the park in Lower Manhattan, said the mayor, who is founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP. The occupants cooperated with law enforcement and the sweep produced no violence, he said.

Perry's Flat Tax and other "bold reform" ideas in context of the richer 1%
The hard right candidates of the GOP are competing to set forth plans that demonstrate their utter and complete loyalty to the right's "make the rich richer and make businesses less accountable" economic program.
This program involves the tired and failed policies of Reaganomics, just magnified:
more tax cuts for the wealthy (zero direct taxation of their primary source of income--making money off money, and --to the extent that the incidence of corporate taxes says that corporate taxation should be attributed to shareholders--reducing those taxes as well);
elimination of earned benefits for the rest of us (assuring huge revenue shortfalls to the federal government and no dedicated funding of programs, along with dedicated axing of benefits through the 'deficit/debt' scare tactic);
deregulation of everything to do with business or capital (gutting EPA, Dodd-Frank, Sarbanes-Oxley, and every other regulatory agency no matter the impact on the economy or on ordinary Americans, thus encouraging a return to speculative frenzy that allows socialization of losses/privatization of gains);
privatization wherever possible (Perry's plan for privatization of whatever Social Security remains after the afore-mentioned gutting; privatization of schools, firefighters, bridges, highways, etc.); and
continued militarization.

America’s early politics, he argues, was even more bitter and partisan that today’s — primarily because the stakes were thought to be even higher.
I've suspected this is the case; the only caveat I'd throw into that is that then they were more articulate and well-read. The problem I have with the denizens of today's left is that they're borderline illiterate. They either rely on texts which have been shown not to work or just give in to inarticulate feelings of victimhood and prejudices. I've maintained an email relationship for years with a lefty in Berlin who is much more well read and easy to engage in tete a tetes than the domestic version; plus he has the rare ability of introspection and is able to laugh at himself if he ever goes too far, which is completely lacking in the humorless pod people of teh domestic left. Plus he doesn't blame Jews for everything.
Btw, after losing a series like the Rangers did, we in Cleveland console ourselves by saying 'That which doesn't kill you only makes you extremely miserable and bitter'.

Ron Radosh does in nice job in the LUN of discussing the need of Rep's to come up with a better response to income inequality a la Paul Ryan's speech to Heritage. Otherwise BO will leverage resentment all the way to reelection.
These college grads especially are the products of both a K-12 experience and college that was far more affective than cognitive. I have gradually tracked down this story but it was designed in the first place by professors who keep doing hand offs to successors that now have BO's ear like LDH. The designers really know how to push the buttons in these former students because they created these susceptibilities. It sounds like bad sci fi to say "embedded in the curriculum" until you actually read some eminent powerful prof in a national trade publication explaining exactly that and why and how it should work.
We can see the gambit Melinda linked last night. We know the media is biased and covers up. I am telling you that education became a weapon and the Dems are actively using the emotions and frustrations they actively cultivated to create a coalition of envy and resentment. It will work if we do not better understand what was done and how it works.
Posted by: rse | October 29, 2011 at 08:00 AM
Thanks for linking that, rse. The appeal of Michael "the fat in the hat" Moore might confuse people like me but we can't pretend it doesn't exist. Paul Ryan is doing a great job but, as rse points out, we're dealing with a lot of people whose education has damaged them as far as actively impairing their ability to come to logical conclusions and decipher data. I don't think a lot of Republicans have thought that through regarding ways to get their points across to an increasingly illiterate population. Not to mention having had it happen while they could've done something about it.

daddy,
My boys and I went for their flight lessons last Sunday, the ones they take in a Aeronca Champ. Here's a video of the plane at The Flying Circus/Bealeton Airstrip. So,we drive the hour to the tiny grass airstrip. Turns out the field is too muddy to land and anyway our instructor, a great guy named Chuck Tippett, is cleaning up the crash of the Champ in a field seven miles away. (He had lent the plane to a couple of friends who crashed it and neither occupant got injured in the muddy mishap. The wheels sank into the mud on landing and broke off, and the plane slid along in the mud until it slowly did a half summersault.) We call him and ask whether we can help and then head over there. We, along with a half-dozen farmers loosely connected with aviation, ended up picking what's left of the army-green plane out of the mud next to a grass airstrip on a farm. There wasn't anything on the plane that wasn't broken. They boys had had three hours each in this plane, which had flown in the Korean War. Now, the Champ gave the boys its last flight, as they sat in the seats inside the fuselage, broken wings sagging down, at altitude six feet atop a flatbed trailer pulled by a tractor from the middle of the muddy field to the farmer's hangar. Their instructor gave them souvenirs: the keychain from the Champ's grenade pin and the keys to the door of the plane.
I told the boys they would remember this day for the rest of their lives, but they didn't comprehend that, thinking more of ice cream. They will return for their lesson next month in a yellow Piper Cub their instructor has access to. His own Cub was crashed by another friend last year. Sometimes being one of the greatest guys for miles around means your airplanes get destroyed on loan, I guess.
Posted by: Jim Ryan | October 29, 2011 at 09:25 AM
Good story. Reminds me of another.
One of the first things I learned at (intermediate, jet) flight training was the differences between a prop and a jet. The instructor showed a picture of a crashed T-28 (which I'd had for primary), upright at the end of a long line of downed trees, wings finally separated, with the canopy opened normally and the straps hanging out in the sign of a casual egress. Next picture is of an A-4 crash, unrecognizable debris marking a smoking hole. The advice: you can usually ditch a prop . . . but don't try that in a jet.
