Re Mecca and the direction of nether regions, Mrs. M/T's dad was responsible for all construction over half of the KSA back 30+ years ago. Being the ornery old bastard that he was he realized that they had never had indoor toilets as a normal part of public places. (If they built a planter in a shopping area, it was immediately used to squat in.) Anyway, he raised the issue of what direction one was supposed to be facing when sitting on the crapper. It shut down construction for an extended period until they sorted out sitting/standing facing/not facing Mecca.

Dana Ward, from the Saturday Morning thread: "Iggy, sometimes you literally SLAY me." You make it so easy for us, Sage of Pitzner. I'm torn between "don't tempt us" and "from your lips to God's ear".

Daddy, from a previous thread you called my attention to a scandal in Ketchikan. The pedophile hasn't been mayor there for a quarter-century. I appreciate your confidence in me, but I'm retiring early to remove myself from a lot of the hassles. I anticipate being politically active, but not that far. Besides, since I've described some of the female members of the JOMO tribe as babes here, I'm on record as being guilty of sexual harassment. And then there is the matter of kiddie porn. Since I never destroyed the baby-on-a-bearskin-rug portrait my parents insisted on having, some of the shriekers would say that I should go to prison for the rest of my miserable life. See? Two strikes against me for running for public office, at least representing the GOP.

daddy

"at least representing the GOP."

Well you did put in that qualifier Mark, but on the other side of the aisle those might be features, not bugs:)

Mark Folkestad

TC, funny you should mention tough old Joe Kapp. Back in '69, he was asked to respond to criticism that he wasn't a "classic quarterback". His reply: "Classics is for Greeks!"

Chaco: What is the deal with all those millions for small pox anti-viral $443 million meds? I thought smallpox only existed in lab refrigerators.
Post 9/11 Tommy Thompson started or expanded a program to stockpile smallpox vaccine in the event it was used in a terrorist attack on us. At the time there was only one company in the Western Hemisphere that did this--Acambis, and they are located less than a mile from my house. They ended up delivering 200 million doses by 2007. At one point we were supposed to be under heightened scrutiny because of Acambis and also because we have a viaduct that carries the main Northeast rail corridor, and at the time Musharraf's son was living here while he was attending one of the local universities.

LUN is about California ceasing to be a jobs engine since 2000 especially. Lots of compelling graphs.

The template killing California is the regulatory state business model that benefits politicians and their connected cronies. It's the model BO is trying to foist on the nation and then the resulting economic declines due to the overreach of govt are attributed to the faults of capitalism. So we get more regulation.

And every one of the factors listed as hurting Ca originates with govt. And the Agenda 21 initiatives playing out nationally at the local levels are behind the overzealous land use he mentions.

And I would disagree that politicians do not care about business. They love established rent seeking enterprises. Especially those partial to public-private partnerships.

Janet

brokers for Democratic Congressman Jim Moran, of Virginia, and his wife sold their shares in 90 companies, dodging the losses that others who stayed in the market would soon face.

Thanks, narciso. Ol' Jim Moran & the late Rep. John Murtha were big buds. All into cronie defense contracts.
The 60 minutes show was probably to lay the "everyone does it" groundwork & then stress that it is mostly evil Republicans.
...and yeah narciso...what about Barney Frank?...has any news organization EVER interviewed his old boyfriend Herb Moses???

Porchlight

Whoa. I just observed a Facebook conversation about OWS in which OWSers were not favorably looked upon. The interesting thing - it was between 4 liberal women with whom I went to high school - in suburban Connecticut.

The tide is definitely turning.

Janet

And the Agenda 21 initiatives playing out nationally at the local levels

My city, Arlington Virginia is all into that. Am Thinker has an article today about politicizing Farmer's Markets. Arlington has dealt with the organization that is mentioned - American Farmland Trust.
Leftist governments at all levels - local, state, fed. - only contract with & funnel money to leftist organizations. We pay them to do studies that in turn tell us to do more leftist things!
Even my little community association has now joined some Soro's funded "housing rights/economic justice" organization! It was an executive committee decision...I don't think most residents here even knew. I'm already feeling like I'm being labeled as kinda kooky for making an issue about it. The president asked people not to speak about it on the listserv. On the public listserv I get thanked for bringing it up...but on the private email exchanges, he chastises me for not understanding how it is no big deal & everyone knew....which they did not.

rse

Thereby confirming to you Janet just what a big deal it is.

A related area that really concerns me are these nominal nonprofits that operate in these so-called public interest areas where they take in extensive revenues being the monopoly provider of some service that a pol steered their way. Pay no taxes like the standard small business as they are nonprofit and thus on the side of goodness and light. So all that revenue gets paid out in salaries and benefits and cushy comp to directors who of course are in a position to steer more rev into the "nonprofit".

And then their employees who are college grads in future will only have to pay their 10% of their salary (over that poverty base) on their college loans back for 10 years and we taxpayers eat the rest so they might as well borrow large and live grandly.

The poor sucker who tries to start his own business with a good idea or goes to work in the private sector will be paying for 20 years. With that inability to discharge and those penalties once you get behind that magnify what is owed, college grads really cannot start their own businesses ven if they survive the indoctrination with that disposition intact.

Unless of course mom and dad funded college fully and there are no loans.

Yes this whole mindset clearly gets us to a fairer, more just society. Parasites thrive. Hosts sicken and die.

No wonder they refuse to teach history except as cultural anthropology. This scenario cannot end well unless it is widely understood and fast.

Jim Ryan

Holy Mackerel! Gloria Cain looks like a honey from the photos I've seen. Kinda looks first ladyish, too.

MarkD

We? The word is "I," Mr President.

narciso

Actually it doesn't, rse, just to an new ruling class, 'the aristocracy of pull' as Rand called it, the nomenklatura by another name.

WAtch out, Mika, before long she'll have your seat on Morning Joe, you a mere granddaughter of a Czech prime minister and a Polish count,

We? The word is "I," Mr President.

He says "I" only when he wants to take credit for others' work.

When he wants to shift blame from himself to Americans generally, he says "we."

Captain Hate

Hi-def will probably save Meeka, although some insurance work on the cans wouldn't hurt.

narciso

I was half joking, Captain, so how about that, Lurch being the beneficiary of the 'prescription drug bill' on two different
occasions, Bacchus, one of those keyed in on the 'crop report,' buying Goldman, right before Buffett, 'tribune of the people' bailed them out,

narciso

This is the second instance, I was referring to, So Karl that was a brilliant move wasn't it, as Captain Tupelov might have put it;

The Kerry trustees’ impeccable timing in drug company trades was evident again in 2007, when the federal government was weighing whether to discontinue Medicare reimbursement for certain anemia drugs used by cancer patients. When the government announced that it would limit reimbursements, shares in Amgen, one of the drugmakers at issue, dropped 15 percent. Kerry’s wife happened to be an Amgen stockholder but avoided losses; her shares, valued at between $500,000 and $1 million, were unloaded more than a week before the government’s announcement.

Captain Hate

The Winter Soldier needed the extra jack to pay the higher docking fees for his yacht. Either that or he couldn't get Teraaaaayza to take enough of her "arthritis treatment" to tear up the pre-nup. I don't have any problem with Bacchus hitting the bricks.

narciso

'Well to be fair' he has sort of rehabilitated himself on Fannie and Freddie

narciso-

I have thought much in terms of how this creates a new nomenklatura narciso but one that is not fluid as what markets create.

Had missed that Rand called it that but it fits her overall perspective on this. If altruism is what the institutions push as a mandate, there's nothing in the way of an aristocracy of pull. They control all the relevant institutions and the indl has ceased to matter.

RichatUF

Don Tomaso-

Don't scare me.

Well rse, that's not the way it looks, but that is the way it is, consider the very aggressive agitprop waged against the film

Well narciso here is an excellent recent essay on aristocracy of pull.

LUN

If you knew what I had nailed down beyond any doubt in the last week, you would realize that passage at the end of the essay almost made me cry. Have been making the point but the passage will be a nice way to remind people that when their fine intentions are impossible, pushing for them may create even more unfairness. And it's more permanent.

Captain Hate

For all the attorneys here, and the ones in training like TK, is it unusual that Paterno hired a criminal defense attorney rather than one specializing in warding off civil cases?

MarkO

Apparently, the SC has agreed to hear the Obamacare cases, which some loyal writers call the ACA (redolent of Bill the Cat).

Jane's on the cruise, but I hope smeone will send her the Kerry stuff,, please.

Heritage on the pipeline which would do what the stimulus failed to:

"The Keystone pipeline would have done what the President's hundreds of billions of dollars in stimulus spending failed to do. It would have created thousands of jobs (tens of thousands, by some predictions), while generating $5.2 billion in property tax revenue for Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. And it would have done it all with private dollars--not taxpayer dollars.

The kicker is that despite all the hoopla from the enviro-celebrity protests, this pipeline should have been anything but controversial, even by the Obama Administration's own findings. Heritage's Nicolas Loris explains:
Radical environmentalists act as if this is the first oil pipeline being built in the United States. We have 50,000 miles of oil pipeline in this country that have provided massive economic benefits with minimal environmental harm.

In short, building the Keystone XL pipeline is nothing new, and it’s one of the most environmentally sensible ways to transport oil. Even the Obama Administration determined it to be safe when the State Department’s recent Environmental Impact Statement found that the pipeline would pose few environmental risks.

Another important point is that even if the Keystone pipeline isn't constructed in the United States, the resource will still be tapped, and it's going to head elsewhere. Heritage's David Kreutzer explains that the development of Canada's oil sands will be slowed (thereby increasing its cost), and it will be diverted to non-U.S. consumers, meaning that the Canadian oil will be shipped across thousands of miles of ocean to Chinese refineries."

Beck is well informed. He may draw the wrong conclusions, but maybe not.

O's rise is tied directly to our penchant for internecine bloodletting. Let the pure ones out. Yes, we can lose to this loser and I'm beginning to wonder if we won't.

Obamacare? Reason enough to vote for anyone but Obama.

Perhaps. If so, shouldn't his rise become a fall once a nominee is chosen and the bloodletting diminishes, as it always has?

The only one they don't attack is Mitt, the most electable candidate we have? What gives?

That's a presumption (that he's the most electable). In any case, I suspect they are "keeping their powder dry" for Mitt. The NYT's hatchet job on him the other day about his cruel job-cutting while at Bain is just a hint of what will come if and when he's the nominee.

Romney will have to explain that he didn't eliminate jobs, he actually "created or saved" them.

Threadkiller

Mitt may not be natural born, Ext. They want a fair fight.

I do not think what Paterno did would be considered unusual, CH. I foresee some sort of criminal negligence charge being leveled at him. Maybe not from the DA, but most certainly from the MFM. The right attorney will prevent something being said that may be used against him in a civil suit.

At least that is what Google says.

http://articles.philly.com/2011-11-13/news/30394134_1_outposts-settlements-ofran

"JERUSALEM - When Hagit Ofran woke up Tuesday - within days of the 16th anniversary of the murder of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin - she found death threats spray-painted on her door.

"You are dead. Ofran, Rabin is waiting for you," was the message scrawled in red against the white walls of her stairwell.

This was the latest of the so-called Price Tag attacks that Jewish militants have carried out against peace activists, Palestinians, and Israeli security forces. The attacks often follow any government move to dismantle Jewish settlements on the West Bank. They are meant to convince Israel's leaders that it's too costly to remove any more settlements - thus blocking any negotiated peace."

Perhaps, besides the lack of sourcing for their claims, I found the most comical aspect to be the labeling of the substantial and undeniable marxist/socialist/anarchist contingent of OWS as "hipsters" while the virtually non-existant, stereotypical racially motivated Tea Partier is the plainly labeled "racist".

Army of Davids

Keystone is like ObamaCare.

It is DC stupidity that should be used to beat Democrats/Obama over the head w/ time and again.

Texas Mom 2012

This corruption is caused whenever Congress passes laws and exempts themselves from this laws. From insider trading to Obamacare, Congress has passed laws forcing citizens to obey without recourse while Congress continues to violate the laws that have been forced on everyday Americans. This is NOT equal protection under the law unless the meaning has been perverted to Animal Farm status: the Pigs, Congress, are MORE EQUAL than the rest of us. It sickens me and I believe this is a source of the anger and disdain many in this country feel for our government. Crony Profiteering needs to be prosecuted. How can Congress be exempt from the laws they pass??? This cannot be Constitutional, our government was not set up to allow a separate class exempt from the laws of our land, yet somehow this is what our Nation has come to be. While these same Pigs in Congress and the White House who continue to profit from their position, they lecture business and the successful hard working citizens about greed and paying their "fair share". Rant off, going for the Zantac now.

"More than three-quarters of Americans say the country’s economic structure is out of balance and “favors a very small proportion of the rich over the rest of the country,” taking up the calls of Occupy Wall Street protesters to reduce the power of major banks and end tax breaks for the affluent and for corporations, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows."

Porchlight

So if SCOTUS upholds the constitutionality of Barrycare is that a plus or minus for which party election wise?
If they strike all or part of it is that a plus or minus for which party election wise?

Had a conversation with a committed Democrat this morning who is self-insured and furious at Obama over the rising costs of her health insurance premiums and some tax changes that are going to hurt her. Solid middle class, hardworking, Hispanic, life-long Dem who was very excited about his election. I don't know if she'll vote against him, but it was encouraging that she places all the blame for it squarely on him.

I say if SCOTUS upholds all of it, that is a plus for Republicans, because then repeal becomes our only hope for getting rid of it, and that will be their message. (I don't know how Romney as nominee would blunt that, though.)

If they strike only part of it, I have no idea. Chaos would ensue.

Benjamin Franklin

Porchlight

O's rise is tied directly to our penchant for internecine bloodletting.

Perhaps you are correct. However, it must be done. Anything that hurts our candidates now, will hurt them x10 in the general. Any candidate that escapes the smears now, will be the brunt of them x10 once he is the nominee.

The only way to get a candidate that can withstand the heat, is to put the heat on them. Now, not later, when it's too late to find someone else.

Maybe O does look good in comparison. How would it have been any better for us if Cain had won the nomination and gotten hit with all this sexual harassment stuff in October 2012?

So? Seems fair to me. If you've worked hard to get to Congress whose job it is to make the rules, you should be able to get the Gold.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57323527/congress-trading-stock-on-inside-information/#ixzz1dgjCcVRz

"Most former congressmen and senators manage to leave Washington - if they ever leave Washington - with more money in their pockets than they had when they arrived, and as you are about to see, the biggest challenge is often avoiding temptation.

Peter Schweizer: This is a venture opportunity. This is an opportunity to leverage your position in public service and use that position to enrich yourself, your friends, and your family.

Peter Schweizer is a fellow at the Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank at Stanford University. A year ago he began working on a book about soft corruption in Washington with a team of eight student researchers, who reviewed financial disclosure records. It became a jumping off point for our own story, and we have independently verified the material we've used.

Schweizer says he wanted to know why some congressmen and senators managed to accumulate significant wealth beyond their salaries, and proved particularly adept at buying and selling stocks.

Schweizer: There are all sorts of forms of honest grafts that congressmen engage in that allow them to become very, very wealthy. So it's not illegal, but I think it's highly unethical, I think it's highly offensive, and wrong.

Steve Kroft: What do you mean honest graft?

Schweizer: For example insider trading on the stock market. If you are a member of Congress, those laws are deemed not to apply.

Kroft: So congressman get a pass on insider trading?

Schweizer: They do. The fact is, if you sit on a healthcare committee and you know that Medicare, for example, is-- is considering not reimbursing for a certain drug that's market moving information. And if you can trade stock on-- off of that information and do so legally, that's a great profit making opportunity. And that sort of behavior goes on.

Kroft: Why does Congress get a pass on this?

Schweizer: It's really the way the rules have been defined. And the people who make the rules are the political class in Washington. And they've conveniently written them in such a way that they don't apply to themselves.

MarkO:

"O's rise is tied directly to our penchant for internecine bloodletting."

I'm less worried about than I have been for a long time. If the recent debates are not just a temporary anomaly, our candidates seem to have figured out that they need to start selling themselves as Obama's opponents (and fending off the media) instead of launching high profile attacks on each other. Maybe they've actually noticed Newt's rising poll numbers and the reaction of the debate spectators.

I don't think that means that the rest of the primary season will be all sweetness and light, but Republicans didn't get hurt this week by infighting. It's not like Obama has been getting any real traction with his jobs bill; what helped him was staying out of the limelight, while sexual harassment allegations against against Cain dominated the news. When one candidate looks that bad, it hurts Republicans as a whole. Cain's accusers' enthusiasm has noticeably waned since he finally brought Lin Wood on board. His image has been dented, but I think that story may have lost its legs.

Hillary and Obama's battle down to the wire certainly didn't hurt Obama in the end. He was pitch perfect for the zeitgeist, and the zeitgeist tips toward Republicans this time around. I still think it's a huge mistake to underestimate Obama. A lot will depend on our ability to come out swinging together for our nominee, no matter who it is. ISTM that pushing hard for down ticket Congressional will help the Republican message get more traction in the media too -- especially when Obama clearly intends to run against Congress.
