Benjamin Franklin

I'm watching it this time....two and a half men can't compete.

Danube of Thought

How sad that there are dopes actually not watching Oregon at Stanford (CH is forgiven if he's watching The Hayed Ones at Terps).

If I'm reading things right, the hicks and yokels who have been howling and bawling that Boise State should play in the title game must now become very silent. Good.

Benjamin Franklin

NEWT !!!!!

The Sultan of Snark---The Schmoozer of Soundbytes----

Captain Hate

(CH is forgiven if he's watching The Hayed Ones at Terps).

We're down 17-0 so I'm about to abandon ship. If there's one thing I can be grateful about my turtles being sucky over the last few years is that I haven't been forced to watch El JEFe bandwagon them with a "Fear the Urkel" tee shirt.

Dear God, I have to endure Musberger's endless stream of smarmy crap on the broadcast. If he had any sense of honor he'd admit (along with a gambling problem that forces him to obsess about spreads during the course of the game) doing as much to produce the Cult of Paterno as anybody.

Clarice

Has he debate begun? WHAT'S GOING ON? I refuse to turn on a tv and I am counting on you.

Thomas Collins

Unbelievable. Did I really just hear the moderator say that killing al-Awlaki based on a panel's finding that he was an enemy combatant was not the "rule of law"? Is our oligarchic elite that manifestly ignorant that it thinks that a US citizen waging war against the US needs to be subject to a criminal trial for his killing to be pursuant to the rule of law?

It would be less disturbing to me if I thought the moderator was just trying to bias the audience toward progism, and understood what he was doing. I think the more likely explanation is that he is an ignoramus.

Captain Hate

DoT, how funny would it be for the Colts, with a banged up Peyton Manning (is there any argument that, based on the results of this year, that he should've been the league MVP every year of the past half decade?), might finish with the rights to Luck.

Thomas Collins

Any WTO experts checking in here? Is Huntsman correct to assert that the WTO wouldn't have jurisdiction over a US complaint against China re currency manipulation?

Threadkiller

Wait till the moderator asks about natural born citizens.

Rick Ballard

"Did I really just hear the moderator say that killing al-Awlaki based on a panel's finding that he was an enemy combatant was not the "rule of law"?"

Yep. Newt's reply (paraphrase) that it's a rule of war to kill the enemy won a very nice round of applause.

Thomas Collins

I'm glad Perry just showed a sense of humor about his Fed agency malfunction.

Clarice

You must hand it to Newt. He has taught the republicans how to deal with the nitwit media .

Rick Ballard

TC,

Perry is using a good trick in replying first to the previous question (asked of another) prior to responding to the current question. I think he's doing fine and the humor has the right touch to it.*

*The writer acknowledges holding a long position in Perry greater than that held in Cain, Gingrich or T1000.

Captain Hate

Touchdown STANFORD. I don't know why but I just don't like the Ducks, ever since Joey Harrington at least. Is today the day for missed PATs?

narciso

See I didn't even to have to look to see it was Scott Pelley, Obama's prompter on the
Social Security blackmail that would come up with such an absurd notion,

Threadkiller

Santorum is against anchor baby citizenship?

Benjamin Franklin

He's got your vote?

Threadkiller

Bens, you are done with your 2.5" man?

Benjamin Franklin

No. I misssed the berate last week and regretted it. It's like Saturday Night Live. Only it's before my bedtime.

Rick Ballard

I found T1000's response to DeMint's question concerning where to cut to be exceptionally good.

Geez - even Huntsman sounds good on the cuts.

Now Newt is smacking the ball soundly.

narciso

You can't rule out the prospect, that both are the rationales, TC.

Captain Hate

Stanford's field is complete garbage. Don't they have any ag majors that know something about late 20th century practices regarding athletic turf?

Brent is such a tool.

Rick Ballard

This debate has all sane* participants focused on punching BOzo rather than each other. It's really not bad at all.

*Uncle Ron needs an attic of his own.

Threadkiller

"Paul Ryan" is Huntsman's secret weapon.

Gmax

A very ordinary Horned Frogs team goes into Boise and wins? I guess we wont have to listen to all the whining and chaffing when Boise State is not in the BCS

Thomas Collins

Rick, I think I just figured out the reference to T1000. I still think T100 is the best qualified, but I realize it's most likely not in the cards in 2012.

narciso

'dogs and cats, living together, human sacrifice, mass hysteria' film at 11.

Benjamin Franklin

"Paul Ryan" is Huntsman's secret weapon."

Not a bad thought, grasshopper. That could work.

Captain Hate

I guess we wont have to listen to all the whining and chaffing when Boise State is not in the BCS

I don't think the whining has been so much about being or not being in the BCS; it's been more that when they're in the BCS they get shunted off to some also-ran bowl while some Big 10 stinker gets embarrassed in the championship game against an SEC team. Now Stanford is getting rolled by the Ducks. I'm starting to think that LSU/Oklahoma might be the one for all the marbles, particularly because Stoops has already gotten his "going retard" game out of his system a couple weeks ago.

Captain Hate

Luck is such a cool customer; I shouldn't count him out despite that swiss cheese defense he has to overcome.

Gmax

Yeah shunted off after beating up on a conference of midgets. I see your point.

Thomas Collins

What is this with LSU, Oklahoma, Stanford, Alabama, Oklahoma State and these other second rate teams. My youngest child's Northwestern Cats just dominated powerhouse Rice 28-6, and are one win away from being bowl eligible!

narciso

Does Duke and Duke run everything, Captain?

Rick Ballard

TC,

I'd say that Gingrich, Romney or Perry could beat Obama rather easily. I'm inclined to not want the field cut prior to Super Tuesday and I hope those three (and possibly Cain) hang on through at least June.

The only question I have about Romney is how effective the '"bishop" of a cult which does not recognize Christian baptism' will turn out to be with the Muddle. I think he can get through the muck that will be thrown about his time with Bain Salvage and Wrecking but the cult aspect is going to resonate among the low info voters.

narciso

Like Arte Johnson, used to say, 'very interesting'

http://pjmedia.com/blog/smoking-gun-most-gunwalker-guns-targets-of-ban-efforts-but-not-wanted-by-cartels/?singlepage=true

Benjamin Franklin

" low info voters."

That wouldn't be you, would it, Marmalard?

Captain Hate

Give it a rest, Gmax; it's not like they haven't embarrassed some big conference teams in major bowl games. But this year they have no claim on anything significant.

Clarice

LI:

"End Game – no clear winner. Cain exceeded expectations but only because expectations were low. Perry redeemed himself but I doubt it will change perceptions. Newt and Romney were both good, Newt scored his usual slap at the moderator and it worked wonderfully. Scott Pelley started arguing when he didn’t like one of Newt’s answers, which will be the video of the night. CBS switched to internet only after 60 minutes, and then the live feed for the final 30 minutes was sketchy – major production fail."

Thomas Collins

Rick, if you are correct about Obama's range of popular votes in 2012, Romney's being a Mormon won't make a difference. If it's closer to what I am saying, it could make a difference. So, I'm hoping you will have the opportunity, at around 11 pm Eastern time on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, to post on JOM about how wrong I was. If Romney is the GOP nominee, it is 4 am on November 7, 2012 and you still have not had the opportunity to so post, the Mormon factor could be a problem.

Captain Hate

Seemingly yes, narc.

Clarice

I'd like to see Newt win for no other reason than I miss the Rumsfeld pressers and his would be equally good. The press is stupid and we spend way too much time pretending they are not.

narciso

They share board of directors with Conquistador Coffee, their continental equivalent, but seriously. Back in the day,
when they had the 'Wide World of Sports' the announcer, talked of the thrill of victory.
and the agony of defeat, I don't think they
could tell the difference anymore.

Thomas Collins

I must acknowledge that the recent Virginia legislative elections indicate that I may be too much of a pessimist. If the other swing states are trending in the Virginia fashion, we won't have to worry about the Dem maneuvering at 4 am on November 7, 2012 to manufacture enough Cuyahoga County, Ohio votes to tilt the election to Obama.

narciso

Yes, that is true, Clarice, then again their brain slugs make it almost impossible that they would understand what he's saying.

Rick Ballard

TC,

Good point. If polling stays on its current trajectory that arrow won't come out of the quiver. It better not be pulled in the primaries.

Clarice,

LI has it about right, IMO. I'm not sure that Cain exceeded general expectations. He sure didn't exceed mine.

Clarice

Here's the overpaid genius' background--
American television journalist, Scott Cameron Pelley, has an estimated net worth of $15 million. After graduating from Texas Tech and holding brief tenures at such Lone Star stations as KXAS-TV Dallas and KSEL-TV Lubbock, the broadcast journalist ascended to greater prestige as chief White House correspondent for the CBS Evening News and as on-air correspondent for 60 Minutes II, then joined the regular lineup of the latter’s parent series in 2004. His resumé placed a particularly strong emphasis on war correspondence in such battle-strewn regions as Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, and on politics, with coverage of a myriad of presidential elections. Pelley accomplished an astonishing journalistic coup by reporting from one of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001, as the tower fell.

we live in some country, don't we, were a dope like this can amass such riches and then there's Katie Couric.

The geniuses in the BS boardroom ...........

Threadkiller

I really never thought of the press as being stupid, at least until I found out Taranto relied on Justia to combat so called "birthers".

He should have stuck with Lexis or Westlaw. Cheap bastard, get a subscription.

Captain Hate

Welp, it looks like it's time to listen to music.

Clarice

Yeah--Niters.

JM Hanes

Gingrich for Press Secretary!

Threadkiller

Me too. Goodnight all.

narciso

I suspected this would be bad, but not quite this Leonard Pinth Garnell level of bad

daddy

Look on the bright side Captain---it's over.

Ughh:(

Threadkiller

BTW here is how I scored them.

Gingrich
Perry/Romney
Cain
Bachmann
Santorum/Paul/Huntsman

daddy

Just saw the Newt counter-attack answer that Clarice mentioned over at Legal Insurrection.

Beautiful job Newt and audience. Way to step on your crank mister Know-It-All media POS. Here's the Link.

Thanks Clarice.

And where is Jane? What the heck are we paying her for?

daddy

And maybe its just me, but that Alan Grayson Campaign Ad photo up left on TM's site is creepy. With those beady eyes and furrowed eyebrows and that hint of darkness under his nose, it strikes me as shades of Adolf's mustache. Try to practice that look for a moment in front of a mirror and see if you don't wind up having to scrunch up your face like Der Fuehrer.

I don't know if thats the look he's was consciously aiming at, but regardless he's definitely achieved it.

Even better: Looking for an Adolf photo I came across this, which amazingly has the Alan Greyson Ad side by side with Adolf. Ha!

narciso

One begins to wonder daddy, was McClellan such a low bar, or was he par for the course;

http://www.nysun.com/national/fleischer-libbys-conviction-was-justified/78817/

JM Hanes

Luckily, I don't even have to see those ads, daddy, 'cause I've a great little extension for my Safari browser called AdBlock. They apparently have a Chrome version too.

daddy

"Mr. Fleischer acknowledged that he later relayed that information (Ms. Plame's CIA tie) to two reporters but he said he did not realize it was classified."

Okay, Whatever you say Ari...

JMH,

Grayson's photo really does strikes me as creepy, so consider yourself lucky.

OT,

Now it looks like that low level Radiation Leak is being detected in Hungary.

narciso

Meanwhile, the two minute hate is being fanned for Rubin:

daddy

Just went to the CBS News Page titled: CBS News/National Journal Debate.

The Newt response is definitely not highlighted by CBS (imagine that!) and in order to see it you have to scroll down 18 debate videos on the left and wade thru 2 minutes of Romney's response. What I found interesting after a second listen (and then a 3rd and a 4th to be sure) is the moment when Newt absolutely contradicts the CBS Reporter. The Reporter thinks he's gotcha'd Gingrich and says "It's not the rule of Law" and then sits there with that smug shit-eating grin on his face. Immediately Newt disagrees saying "It is the rule of Law. That is explicitly false. It is the rule of Law," at which point you can distinctly hear the Reporter mumble under his breath a very scornful "No", but by then Gingrich is off and running and knocking this point out of the park, the audience explodes in applause, and this Reporter wisely shuts up.

Beautiful to watch.

But what I want to say is that this Reporter guy doesn't believe Newt's answer. His muttered scornful "No" has let us know what he really thinks. He thinks killing Al Awlaki was against the Law. So then why the hell, since he believes it was against the Law, isn't he or his CBS Network asking this pointed question, not of Gingrich and Romney, but asking it of the President who actually ordered what the Reporter obviously considers murder, Barrack Obama?

That's what we ought to be demanding to know out of this Reporter sunuvabitch. Why aren't you doing that? Why aren't you asking Obama? Is it because you're a coward or a sycophantic or a partisan or a hypocrite? Or all of the above?

Good job Newt.

daddy

A Cool Butterfly.

Pofarmer

Nobody talking about UFC? Yeah, the title fight sucked. But, there was one heck of a lightweight bout ob facebook right before. All the hyping on FOX, then a minute fight, was a little underwhelming. But, it was nice to see a guy with a "Brown Pride". Tatoo knocked out.

Clarice

daddy, that is a really cool astronomy picture, but then most of them are, aren't they? what an incredible universe we live in.

Janet

Great point at 2:56, daddy!!!

hit and run

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SBW!!!

Clarice

HB, SBW, and good morning hit!

Janet

Wonderful Pieces, Clarice. It is past time for all of us to get out of our comfort zone. 'Somebody needs to...' - well, the somebody is me.

Happy Birthday, SBW!!

Melinda Romanoff

Happy Birthday, SBW!

Clarice, WoW! Eye opener.

narciso

Happy birthday, SBW, It's is almost humorous, but ultimately bewildering, how the Peter principle works, in the Olympian heights of Washington, in your very good pieces, and I included the 'Fingar' he gave to everyone else in the private intelligence networks, in the Priest book.

Jack is Back!

Happy Birthday SBW. Will have to buy a cup cake for Frederick today and put a candle on it.

Clarice,

That was one great "Pieces". Did you know you can now get Reese's Peanut Butter? Scalzi's analogy is specially true of major college sports and professional sports. People allow their self-esteem and on ego's to be taken over by the success or failure of their teams. You see it every Saturday and Sunday. A Win equals joy in their lives that family, God, work, country or personal achievement can not provide. While a loss damns that esteem and ego to the hell of victimhood and "self pity".

When you look at how the fans and students of Penn State have accepted the 3 monkeys of PSU athletics - McQuery, Paterno and Curley - you are begging for "A Win" in order to make your life more valuable. Pretty pathetic.

centralcal

Good morning and Happy Birthday SBW. Another great Pieces, Clarice and I see you have a growing comment section each Sunday.

CBS showed why they are no longer the top broadcast network. Pelley showed that he is an arrogant liberal snot.

Newt wonderful as usual. Perry surprisingly excellent too. I pretty much agree with everything Rick Ballard wrote re: the debate last night.

Isn't Jane on the NRO cruise now? I think it is underway this weekend, no?

sbw

Why, thank you, all. Kind of you to say.

I didn't know that bit of history had slipped out. Just goes to show that JOM researchers are the Best Evah!

pagar

Adding my congratulations for another Great Pieces, Clarice. Daddy knocks another out of the Ball park with "Why aren't you asking Obama?"

Happy Birthday, SBW!

Janet, I know we talk about trying to do more but It seems so overwhelming some times.

"According to the Los Angeles Times, with the exception of existing in locked freezers in Russia and U.S. labs, the smallpox virus was eradicated in 1978. Yet, in a no-bid contract, the Obama administration has given $443 million of American taxpayers’ money for a “experimental smallpox drug” to a bio-defense company, Siga, controlled by billionaire Democrat-donor Ron Perleman and whose board ex-SEIU boss Andy Stern sits on."

LUN

My guess is that we could post a hundred of these every day and never repeat one.

The above link is total 100% waste of the US taxpayer dollar but it is only one of millions of dollar wasting federal programs.

I just don't know what more to do.

Porchlight

Happy birthday, sbw!

Clarice

Thanks all.

Benjamin Franklin

All you dimwitted low information voters can do is copy and paste what other people have said.

No original thoughts of your own.

MayBee

Happy birthday to our most distinguished friend, SBW!

glasater

Happy Birthday, SBW!

sbw

My goodness! Does everyone know it is my birthday? Thank you all.

And thanks, Clarice, for the Pieces. I have made copies and am passing out handbills.

maryrose

Happy Birthday SBW! Have a great one!
daddy-on target as usual.
clarice; You are simply marvelous as Billy Chrystal used to say. Your "pieces' really encourages us and provides useful feedback comments. It is nice to know we are not alone in our thinking.
