Well seeing what the last Spring turned out to be, I'm not sanguine about the Autumn,
although they aren't quite following the Russian or Iranian models, yet

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2063628/Egypt-revolution-chaos-9-months-Peter-Hitchens-reports-fearful-violent-land.html

That example of Goodman Professor Brown, who
seems to be from Perfidious Albion, or atleast started his education there, seems
right with what rse was describing.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

GMAX: You seem to be very concerned about the blood being coughed up or not. I have no idea if the investigations will bear out the initial reports or not, all I know is what is reported and that from last night. If you have more current info then stop your whining and post it so we can all know what you seem so sure of. Here is the link I posted last night after the incident.

Eyewitness account of pepper-spraying officer from UC Davis student: "Stop. No. I want to spray these kids down."

CC with the POM POMS

I agree with Cecil and Clarice. DoT did the right thing, but he also did it with a lot of support from other commenters. I don't think it fair to put him "out front" alone. Some of us may have kept silent standing proudly behind him, others of us (with pom poms) also spoke out in support. Either vocally or silently, he was not alone and a majority were in complete approval.

CC with the POM POMS

Extraneus - her name is Michelle Fields and she is a reporter for Daily Caller. I saw her interviewed on one of the Friday night FNC shows (can't remember which one) - very bright gal.

Porchlight

In my opinion, DoT deserves approbation, not censure.

I agree.

Folks, I take full responsibility for the escalation on this thread. My pushback on Sara's "disruptor diva" comment appears to have started it.

Sara, I value your input here. I do wish you'd place blame where it belongs. First off, BF claims he is not Dana Ward (a lie). Secondly, DoT posted only publicly available information. Thirdly, anything DoT did was in response to the vile commenting behavior by BF, which (under various pseudonyms) has gone on here for years.

I hold that BF's somewhat modified behavior since then is due in great part to DoT's actions.

Cecil Turner

I have no idea if the investigations will bear out the initial reports or not, all I know is what is reported and that from last night.

The AP report you and I linked earlier cited two "treated and released" from hospital. I hope you see the problem with uncritical acceptance of one of the protesters' statements. That's not an "initial report," it's a dubious claim by someone with motivation to lie. Here's more from your latest link:

When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats. Several of these students were hospitalized. Others are seriously injured.
Who you gonna believe, the OWS guy, or your lyin' eyes?

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Just curious, why on Earth would you hang around with folks who are so despicable as to not denounce behavior that you find beyond the pale? Is the urge to scold the overwhelming desire in an otherwise miserable existence?

Because the majority are exceptionally smart and well informed people from whom I can learn and have sensible intelligent debate. The rest make me laugh and/or roll my eyes most of the time (your group), the truly despicable are invisible to me. And because I've now been here over 7 years and see no reason why I should leave, why don't you, if you find my comments so bothersome?

Janet

her name is Michelle Fields and she is a reporter for Daily Caller.

She has been doing a great job. Very brave with some of the Occupy DC crap too.

Porchlight

Back on a previous (off-)topic - I opened the Beaujolais nouveau. It's a bit syrupy but I am enjoying it nonetheless. Hope your Zins hit the spot, and happy birthday once again, DrJ.

Extraneus

Sorry I didn't say

the smirking "considerably higher in the hierarchy" than 1% dude who wouldn't donate "a few thousand dollars" to the cause he champions.
Anyone know that asshole's name?
Extraneus

Thanks for putting up Michelle Fields' name, cc. I look forward to seeing more of her work.

Much of the thread today has been spent arguing over not the forest, not the trees, not the branches, not even the leaves, . . . but people's opinion of what leaves might have looked like in a given situation. It's time to recalibrate and get back on track.

Reasonable people can concede that some people may have legitimate concerns they advertise in most unfortunate ways that interfere with their message.

They can also concede that sometimes protests are set up to instigate responses that they then use to ratchet up tension.

They can further concede that cops can act and sometime overreact.

Now let's get some sleep, or watch the giants game, or something else so that tomorrow the discussion will be illuminating.

Benjamin Franklin

First of all;

DoT didn't do shite. He was 180 degrees wrong in his assumptions, his delerious 'facts', and his methodology (lol).

I have never been a professor of any kind. He never posted any pics of any relevance to me, nor any facts, save my name which he probably got from Clarice or Jeff Goldstein (which is, I believe, illegal)

It's true that I tried to tailor my approach to your requests, but the
value-added requirements which seem to increase as time wore on, became a pain. But, I put up with it for the sake of the' experiment'

The 'Experiment' was an attempt to change the discourse between
left and right, because it has become too acrimonious. It's not possible to 'agree to disagree' any more. There are too many persons who are overly invested in their political viewpoint. There is no room for discussion, 'so hit the road Jack' What's wrong with the Beltway is a carbon-copy with what's wrong here. You don't even allow your trusted 'friends' to take a position opposite your own. If they do, you castigate mercilessly until they relent and start back-peddling out of fear. Those who don't fear the lash, are few. That is sad. I know many here are not as aggressive as the
Alphas who try to rule the roost. The Alpha's hate me mainly, because they generally have no answer to my posts, and because
I diminish their imagined powers over other posters here. I am a constant reminder that they aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, and that upsets them."

Their idea of a 'good' discussion is one wherein the Alphas direct the discourse, and the others wave their pom-poms in slavish
unity.

For five months I have put up with your foolish, and oft repeated lies about me, with nary a word of support (save a few posters who I will not name because they will have to spend hours defending themselves)

I must say the 'Experiment' has failed. There is, apparently no hope for improvement of the dialogue between Left and Right.

It's a shame that the good people here have to put up with the sub-human element, which has the majority of the house.

They rule with an iron hand, like Ghaddafi/Saddam, with about the same level of competency.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Sara, I value your input here. I do wish you'd place blame where it belongs. First off, BF claims he is not Dana Ward (a lie). Secondly, DoT posted only publicly available information. Thirdly, anything DoT did was in response to the vile commenting behavior by BF, which (under various pseudonyms) has gone on here for years.

Thank you, nice to know someone values my input.

I know why DOT published the info. I don't agree that it was right, but I was just as incensed at Dana at the time as everyone else, something I think gets forgotten. The reason what DOT did was wrong was not in using publicly avail. info, it was, IMO, because he was advocating and getting support for costing a man his livelihood for personal reasons. No amount of attacks on him, me or anyone else is going to convince me that is a good thing, a right things. I just get so frustrated that I can't seem to get my one and only point across.

I don't know for sure why Dana changed his ways, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of what DOT did. I think it had more to do with several of us approaching him privately and asking him to cool it. I know of at least three who did, but there may have been more.

My own attitude toward Dana changed for one reason, I found out his "imaginary son" wasn't imaginary at all and that he is or at least was not long ago active duty serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was just as brutal toward him as PUK was regarding the "imaginary son," because I don't like anyone using the military as a pawn. I felt terrible afterwards when I found out the truth, thinking how horrible it would be for me if someone didn't believe my son was serving honorably and mocked me about it. I felt it was incumbent on me to apologize for all my past remarks and my apology was accepted, one offered in return and from then on he has treated me respectfully, as I see him do with the others who reached out.

narciso

Lets stipulate the actions of the police at UC Davis, don't have 'good optics' however necessary they may have ultimately have been, But that isn't the real story, no matter how much the Journolist wants it to, Michael Ayers, wants it to be so, so does Bill Ayers, who has engineered said confrontations from Grant Park to Tahrir Square,

The movement is not about banks, or corrupt
politicians, that is just the pretext, If they did they would camp in front of the White House, Fannie and Freddie Offices,

boris

"for the sake of the' experiment'"

How many lab rats does it take to screw up an experiment?

Rocco

Three days before the incident at UC Davis, Professor Nathan Brown, the organizer of the protest, gave a "thesis" on the university struggle.

2. Police brutality is an administrative tool to enforce tuition increases.

Police brutality against students, workers, and faculty is not an accident—just like it has not been an accident for decades in black and brown communities. Like privatization, and as an essential part of privatization, police brutality is a program, an implicit policy. It is a method used by UC administrators to discipline students into paying more, to beat them into taking on more debt, to crush dissent and to suppress free speech. Police brutality is the essence of the administrative logic of privatization.
Janet

Exactly, narciso. It is like Paliwood...the green helmet guy...staged run-ins for the photo op. Pure propaganda.
I just had a lib. FB friend post something about Kent State. They WANT something to happen.

Gmax

why don't you, if you find my comments so bothersome?

You just had another great leap of logic based on nothing at all. Where did I say I find you "bothersome"? You do this a lot, its either invisible to you or its a deliberate straw man for you to tear down.

I dont find you bothersome, I find you excitable and melodramatic and unintentionally hilarious.

You were the one going on and on about no one condemning behavior you thought was beyond the pale. Now I am to believe, if you are speaking honestly, the same folks are smart and well informed and that trumps the base behavior?

OK. At least we have stopped hearing about poor college students coughing up blood from the evil malignant peace officers. Eye roll and smirk.

Jack is Back!

Don't let the door hit you in the ass Ben. Good riddance. Lying POS. I really feel sorry for the poor students that have to sit and listen to your deviant view of the real world. I know In 'n Out are looking for a few good political philosphers.

Great race on ESPN. Stewart has the lead but Edwards is just behind. Closest Cup race ever. If they finished as they are now it would be a tie. 26 laps to go. A true shoot-out. Go to ESPN and watch. Dramatic and compelling stuff. Stewart has the fastest car so far.

Gmax

Prof Dana, that might be the lamest of lame posts you have every put up. The experiment failed, maybe because you did not put up enough Huff Puff and DKOS articles? Lord know you tried. Pity really. What are you gonna do?

Old Lurker

Are you guys just warming up for family fights around the Thanksgiving tables or what?

Rick Ballard

OK - Who got the pictures?

Dead girl or live boy?

Benjamin Franklin

"Don't let the door hit you in the ass Ben"

Oh, I'm not leaving. Only the 'Experiment' has concluded.

Shall I buy you a new 'choke-chain'?

Gmax

Terror suspect arrested in NYC, making a bomb. Dont you feel safe knowing how many police resources have to be diverted for this OWS nonsense?

Old Lurker

Jim, thanks for posting that quote from the GE Annual Report.

I agree that we never thought we would read such a sentiment from what used to be a great company. If they are correct, game over.

narciso

See I didn't know that tidbit from the good professor, but I suspected it. It's classic
Alinsky formulation, find and then irritate the bases of agitation, 'then polarize, isolate separate all bases for support' whether the battlefield is Madison, or Manhattan, the playbook is the same.

Ignatz

I'll take one short fall off the wagon to respond to this absurdity;
--I must say the 'Experiment' has failed. There is, apparently no hope for improvement of the dialogue between Left and Right.--

We only have to go back one thread to see it utterly brimming with your smart ass one liners directed often at people who were not even directing their comments to or about you.
And you routinely call people here stupid, fools and worse even when they're just asking you a question. You almost never answer direct questions.
To call your behavior an "experiment" in making left-right dialog less acrimonious is a conceit to justify your own egregious behavior and nothing more. Which is too bad because if it was genuine it would be worthwhile.

Gmax

Two ex wife have found absolutely nothing to be worthwhile, why expect it to be different here?

Extraneus

Are you guys just warming up for family fights around the Thanksgiving tables or what?

Heh.

Old Lurker

Get back on that wagon, Iggy....

Benjamin Franklin

I don't know why the Alpha here doesn't like Newt/2012-They are kindred spirits.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/11/19/michael-tomasky-the-gop-debate-was-the-best-one-yet.html

"The question got tossed to Newt Gingrich first. As a Catholic for the last 15 minutes or so of his life, Gingrich presumably knows what “common good” means, since it is in no small measure a Catholic idea, and a liberal, social-justice Catholic one. You could see in his eyes that he didn’t like this business. He avoided discussing what the common good actually means and changed the subject to liberty, noting that by liberty the Founders meant wisdom and virtue, not “hedonism and acquisition.” He is right, even if he has done a far better job of representing the latter two concepts than the former ones for most of his life. Rick Perry, meanwhile, thinks the common good is about tax cuts, which is exactly and perfectly the opposite of what it’s about."

Jack is Back!

Tony Stewart wins the Cup with an exceptional piece of driving. Edwards 2nd - just didn't have the horsepower to overtake him. What a race.

Oh please, don't try "tactics" on me. I

Benjamin Franklin

"you routinely call people here stupid, fools and worse even when they're just asking you a question. "

You, Ranger and GMax are on level ground with regard to intellect, but more importantly you all parrot the same DoT talking points.( I've often wondered if you aren't all the same posters, because there's not a dime's worth of difference between you)

That's why i have no respect for you. But I've told you that many times. So why would i bother to answer a question from any of you when you don't have the memory capacity to record it.

Jane

I must say the 'Experiment' has failed.

Good. Now leave.

sbw

Author William Gass once said that people use words to club the living into food.

It was no experiment. He was playing with his food. It was a game.

I don't play that game. No one else should be gullible enough to play either.

Gmax

Lost for words I see. I am done with you, take some prozac and calm down.

Porchlight

Even Sara appears to believe that BF is Dana G. Ward, onetime Pitzer instructor. Yet BF continues to deny it.

The 'Experiment'

The Alpha's hate me.....

narciso,

Its a power thing. Always has been. Every life under communism has been a poor and failed existence compared to democratic capitalism. But who cares about the little people except the ones who want to control them and decide their lives. Power.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

You were the one going on and on about no one condemning behavior you thought was beyond the pale. Now I am to believe, if you are speaking honestly, the same folks are smart and well informed and that trumps the base behavior?

WTF are you talking about. I am no longer surprised at anyone's behavior here. And I only condemned DOT's actions. The rest is just my own dismay, shock, surprise, whatever you want to call it about others thinking it was just right and dandy. I don't think I'll ever get that.

The smart, well informed don't cheerlead for DOT or anyone else. Try it.

boris

"And I only condemned DOT's actions."

DoT's only actions were making some comments on a blog. Seems like there is some kind of double standard here.

Ignatz

--Get back on that wagon, Iggy....--

Back on, OL. Tis hopeless.

Gmax

The lack of respect is definitely reciprocated. I could care less your asinine opinion on anything let alone my intellect. I knew enough not to take classes or crap from wigged out pseudo intellectuals like you. So a two time loser in relationships has any business tossing out insults? How life in the student ghetto apartments?

Boy! Are you a lert !!!

Jack is Back!

So, if BF is not this guy Dana Ward, who correpsonds with HIt, then who is he? Does Hit know?

Why would he be so strident in his denial? Does that mean that he is vulnerable to his employer for his behavior on this site? Something doesn't add up here. Either he is lying or DoT and others have made a big mistake.

I am betting on DoT not making any mistake and BF lying like a cheap rug.

Benjamin Franklin

"Get back on that wagon, Iggy...."

DoT's the lush, OL. Iggy is just a wannabe.

narciso

You k now I logged on earlier in the afternoon, when I was shopping and I got through to the site, funny thing, though on the sidebar, it said corporate policies, made this site, not acceptable, There isn't any account except the stores, some sites like PW, are often completely blocked, in certain locations, for instances of crimethink I imagine.

Benjamin Franklin

"Yet BF continues to deny it."

And why is that? What is so incriminating? It is a suffisive lie, but that doesn't matter to serial liars who are so accustomed to denigrating the truth, that it is like quaffing a martini.

I hope you have read the interview of an actual protestor who got sprayed Sara.

The guy admits three basic things:

1. The police were going to arrest three people, to stop the police, he and others blocked the only route they could take to remove the arrestees.

2. They knew they were interfering in the polices actions and had been told not to or they would be pepper sprayed.

3. He was last or near last in the line with plenty of opportunity to move, or leave, and HE decided to stay and be sprayed. A personal decision on his point.

The clear intent of this group was to interfere and block the police from doing their duty and he admits that's exactly what they were doing.

His exact quote is: ""There was still one walkway open that the police were going to use to walk the arrestees out. I saw some friends of mine sit down there, and they were my friends, so I joined them. "

THUS YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG IN THEM BEING PASSIVE, THEY WERE IN FACT BEING AGGRESSIVE IN BLOCKING THE ONLY PATH THE POLICE HAD TO MOVE ARRESTEES OUT OF THE AREA, AND THEY KNEW THEY WERE DOING IT INTENTIONALLY.

So much for your argument that these were innocent little lambs hanging in the quad. They admit the exact opposite, they admit intentionally attemtping to stop the police from doing their sworn duty.

Captain Hate

I'm not sure why anybody would defend the troll after its words have made it clear he has contempt for everybody here. Imo it's an act of hubris for anybody to think they're excluded from that. I've had experiences at the workplace where I've thought that people were being unfairly dismissive of a "difficult" co-worker until I got torpedoed myself. It's a hard lesson to learn but one you don't forget.

This probably won't be read or paid attention to, however, I am going to make a comment. Today while reading comments, and Charlie of Colorado started his sarcasm I wondered what has happened to him over the years I've been reading jom. I've lurked, then been a regular commenter, (way before the Scooter Libby travesty) then just turned into a regular reader. Charlie's comments have grown more hateful as time has passed. Charlie, you have turned arrogant and sarcastic and brush off others who have different opinions than you do. I've been surprised because I used to look forward to your comments, as I did those of PeterUK. You will probably have a hateful comment to my suggestion, but here goes: be at peace with yourself (aren't you a Buddhist or something?...can't remember), treat others with some respect ... meditate some, maybe you won't be so quick to take offense and be snarky and belittling to others. I'm saying this because I'm 70 yrs. old now...time is so short...life is so short...good health is precious and often doesn't last. Spread kindness instead of sarcasm ... you will be a lot happier. I realize you are way, way more intelligent than I am, but people who snarl at others so freely, usually end up alone and can't figure out why.

Benjamin Franklin

"I'm not sure why anybody would defend the troll after its words have made it clear he has contempt for everybody here."

Rocco's 8:31 is very revealing on a couple of levels. But didn't ChaCo present all kinds of evidence from the NYPD that they do not pepper spray? Then what the hell was that the NYPD was spraying at the :20 mark? Pledge or maybe bug spray.

As I have suggested, this was staged. Now there is evidence via the blogs. Look at the videos and how they protected themselves even before the officers show up with the spray. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that this is trailing back to the good professor Brown and his leftist cohorts in the faculty. A coordinated, planned and executed entrapment of the police for full media exposition and hand wringing on a national scale. All we need now is an Obama statement of idiocy on how the police "acted stupidly".

Just starting catch-up.

Narciso,

Thanks for that link from the previous thread about BBC Climate Correspondent Roger Harrabin taking money from the ClimateGater's.

The story does a decent job on his bias, but fails to mention that Harrabin was the first individual to receive the ClimateGate Memos.

Harrabin received a great number of them 2 weeks before the latter massive e-mail dump. That latter dump is how we the public all learned about ClimateGate because Harrabin decided to hide the ClimateGate e-mails he had received. The dumper had to dump them somewhere else than to the BBC in order for them to finally see the light of day. Corruption, thy name is BBC.

Makes me wonder in retrospect if Harrabin, during that 2 week time period, was actively engaged in trying to help his Climategate buddies track down the dumper and shut him up. I put nothing past these BBC AGWer's.

Also nice to see that the UK Telegraph is going on attack mode regarding Harrabin and the BBC, but then amazingly when you go to the BBC webpage, so far I can't find word one about any of this.

Wonder when we'll hear about the Bank Account of Harrabin's Beeb Partner in Propoganda, Richard Black?

Thanks for that link.

Maybe somebody camping with inadequate bathroom facilities. But that’s a lot of poop so it would have to be pretty close. Let’s say within 1/4 mile. Hmmm…could be anybody I guess.”

Now that Clarice is here and DrJ has made us think about food, what is everyone doing for Thanksgiving beside avoiding Uncle Art's BO, keeping Aunt Janice off the mulled wine and making sure your cousin's kids don't screw with the TiVo?

We are tradionalists: Butternut squash soup, Fresh herb rubbed Turkey, Foccacia bread, chestnut and sausage stuffing, sweet potatoe souffle, mashed potatoes with gravy and pumpkin and mincemeat pies. Lets share:)

BTW, got all my recipes from Dan Quayle.
