I guess being a:

serial adulterer

who was fined $300,000 by the House Ethics committee for violations,

and who was reviled by his colleagues in the house GOP –
and had only a few endorsements from anyone he served with –

who attacked Ryan on MTP

and did a TV commercial with PELOSI
(something so-called RINO Mitt never did),

who has made repeated leftist attacks on free enterprise,

who worked for FREDDIE MAC,

was lobbyist,

and who is such a lousy boss he can’t manage to keep a campaign staff in tact …

can win a primary in a southern state because,

(1) he is a southerner from a neighboring state,

and (2) he threw a lot of red meat at the base and they ate it up, Pavlovian style.

Newt’s negatives are higher than Hillary’s ever were.

He trails Obama in every poll – and has for years.

He can no more beat Obama than quarterback the Falcons to the Super Bowl.

SC made big mistake.

HERE'S KUDLOW'S TAKE:

On his Saturday radio show on WABC in New York City, host of CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report” Larry Kudlow voiced his displeasure with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich attacking former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s association with Bain Capital.

At the tail-end of his show in a panel format with Wall Street Journal senior economics writer Steve Moore, Real Clear Politics editor and founder John McIntyre, and American Enterprise Institute economic columnist James Pethokoukis, Kudlow charged Gingrich did not pass the free-market capitalism test.

“Jimmy [Pethokoukis], I don’t care whether Newt wins in South Carolina or not,” Kudlow said. “He’s not going to get the nomination and I don’t even think he’s a capitalist. He’s still pecking away as he did in the last debate with this left-wing stuff. He’s saying that, ‘You know Bain Capital — it wasn’t a venture capitalist fund. It was a bad private equity fund.’ I’m sorry. He doesn’t pass the smell test for capitalism.”

centralcal

Seriously?

Seriously, indeed!

Okay, now what?

sbw

Newts negatives are still fewer than Obama's.

If the Lawn Gnome isn't going to run, I could vote for Newt.

hit and run

Forget it. I'm staying home on Nov 5.

Rick Ballard

"Okay, now what?"

Governor Romney's hand picked political advisory team begins billing weekly rather than monthly.

It's just a matter of prudence, they all agree that he remains the most electable candidate and will continue to so report until his checks stop clearing.

reliapundit

facts are stubborn things:

http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/america-hates-newt-gingrich/326161
Not every poll releases their full results, so here are the most recent favorability results I could find for Obama, Romney, and Newt.
Fox News, 1/12-1/14:
Obama, fav/unfav, 51%/46%, +5
Romney, fav/unfav, 45%/38%, +7
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 27%/56%, -29
CBS/NYT, 1/12-1/17:
Obama, fav/unfav, 38%/45%, -7
Romney, fav/unfav, 21%/35%, -14
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 17%/49%, -32
PPP, 1/13-1/17:
Obama, app/dis, 47%/50%, -3
Romney, fav/unfav, 35%/53%, -18
Gingrich, fav/unfav, 26%/60%, -34

GINGRICH HAS WORSE NEGATIVES THAN HILLARY AND PALIN EVER DID.

HE IS UNELECTABLE.

Remember, Democrats were allowed to vote in the GOP South Carolina Primary. The items reliapundit enumerated are PLUSES for them!

Stephanie

Democracy says Newt wins
The people have spoken
Wait what? Obama? never mind

Barbara

If Newt manages to bamboozle his way to the nomination, get ready for 4 more years of Obama's transformation of America. Obama and Axlepouffe will make minced meat out of Newt.

Rocco

Brit Hume made a good point tonight saying although they've each won one, Romney's the only one who's had a strong showing in all three. Food for thought.

OldTimer

We've only just begun....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__VQX2Xn7tI

sam

Romney has only stayed afloat because the Republican base has remained divided among many candidates.

As the field winnows, the last non-Romney will win the nomination.

Deal with it.

hit and run

Don't despair -- we only have 48 hours to wait until the next GOP debate!

Hosted by NBC!!!

sam

Romney has spent 6 years running for this, and probably spent more than all his opponents combined in the 2 cycles.

He is just a bad product.

narciso

Was it really that surprising that Newt would win, the surprise was the notion that Mitt would.

narciso

Yey, 'the beatings will continue'

sbw

I can't wait until we can stop talking about the 2012 election because it is past.

jayef

Only an imbecile would have difficulty choosing between Newt and Obama.

hit and run

Joe Paterno has died.

Jane

I agree SBW, even my radio show has gotten boring as hell because it is election every hour for the whole hour.

Danube of Thought

You've been masterful so far, Mitt! What bit of inspiration do you have in store for us next?

Porchlight

Palin on Fox a few minutes ago:

"We have 47 states to go, or if you are Obama, 54."

Porchlight

RIP Joe. I'm sorry it had to end like this.

Janet

Was it really that surprising that Newt would win, the surprise was the notion that Mitt would.

I agree, narciso.

A Casual Observation

Newt wins. Nyah, nyah, na, na, nyah ... Pftt!!

sam

Romney will still win the nomination (likely), but he is a very weak candidate.

Worse than McCain.

Porchlight

Was it really that surprising that Newt would win, the surprise was the notion that Mitt would.

Well, Mitt led in the polls until just a day or two ago, and Newt was in single digits last month IIRC. So yeah, I'd say it's a surprise. Call it a fourth-quarter upset.

Threadkiller

Pedantic warning!

The total count from Obama's gaffe is 60.

57 states , 1 to go, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.

Jack is Back!

Early voting tomorrow down here in Florida. And Newt wins in SC? Hmmmm. Faster, Feiler Principle in play. I predict Newt wins in Florida. He has my vote. I want someone who wants to see the present occupant not ony vacated but humiliated as the charaltan he is. Mitt is to much a nice guy to do that.

Yes I am a sadist but a nice one at that.

PDinDetroit

"We have 47 states to go, or if you are Obama, 54."

Thanks for sharing that Porch!

narciso

the more populist center right candidate has often won, yes McCain was the exception, because he coopted the machinery, You can't really square the circle, of being against
Obamacare, but being for it's precursor, Yes
Newt was not perfect on that score, but his
fingerprints are much less visible.

Jane

Joe Paterno has died.

I just won the death pool.

hit and run

TK:
The total count from Obama's gaffe is 60.

57 states , 1 to go, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.

I think we are long lost brothers. I had typed the exact same thing but hadn't hit post yet.

Stephanie

Espn is not reporting that Paterno death but is reporting that he is in hospital in serious condition or as his family said minor complications from lung cancer.

Total snafu on the reportage so far. Any linkage for the death report? Espn went wall to walk when he was fired I figure they will do the same if he has died BWDIK.

Jack is Back!

Just saw the count by county in SC. WoW. He won them all except the two liberal ones. Not like 08. People are really mad. Look out America Left.

Jane

What a terrible way to go. Imagine how it would be reported if he died a year ago.

I truly hope we are not stuck with Newt. He really is a nasty piece of work.

Janet

A *pedant alert* he warned
The comma numbskull alas was scorned
She left in shame
Lousy punctuation to blame
Said the pedant, "Let all be forewarned!"

Stephanie

Two presidents from Georgia? Eerk. I just hope we can cover ourselves in glory this time around. That last one we imposed on the nation was a dud. Of course he was a democrat so that's redundant ain't it?

sbw

Drudge death headline links to not dead story.

clarice feldman

Perhaps Duke & Duke will panic and start looking around at the far better "2d string" for a candidate..

rse

Ok. The LUN is not a Romney lecture and it's not about Newt.

But It's so on the money with these scams produced to keep the intl political class and their business cronies in power and funded that I wanted to post.

narciso

You know how I roll, I have no illusions about Newt, but if we have to go Nixonian
instead of the Rockefeller path, crikey.

One of the nitpicks I have about
Beck lately is he keeps associating Andrew Jackson, the anti Bank populist with the likesof Wilson and FDR, a serious category error.Hence he took exception with Newt citing the former's philosophy toward the enemy.

clarice feldman

From Legal Insurrection with links at site:

Hmmm …. Gingrich won women by 38-19 percent over Romney, 41 percent support among married women

Newt running Knockout Punch Money Bomb

Santorum say he’s in it for the long run.

Fox News projects Santorum 3rd.

“another winner tonight? Sarah Palin. she wanted the race to go on, she gets her wish”

Ed Rollins on Fox – Republican establishment is going to “go to war” on Newt for next 2-3 weeks

centralcal

Yeah, Clarice - and I see Prof. Jacobson has a photo of "the cake."

Dear Lord - who can save us?

Jack is Back!

Its all about money from here on out. Believe me.

Florida is to big for small favors. I know.

Stephanie

Who can save us...The Free Republic of Texas?

Chubby

((Hence he took exception with Newt citing the former's philosophy toward the enemy.))

if Newt was citing Andrew Jackson's economic viewpoint in a positive fashion, I wonder why Ron Paul hates him so much? that would seem to be a major point of accord between them. For some reason Paul seems more tolerant of Romney, ntw Obamacare

Stephanie

Who is this republican establishment Juan Williams speaks of?

Janet

Obama at Disney -

from LI (that's the whole picture!)

Porchlight

The total count from Obama's gaffe is 60.

57 states , 1 to go, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.

I thought someone might point that out. But it's still a great line!

centralcal

Stephanie do you live in Texas? I was born there but was moved to California by my parents at the age of 4 and have never visited since.

One of my favorite CPA's, a young gal in her early 30's has just relocated to Austin (you may get an email from me Porchlight, about this). She is young, with a young family. I am not so young any more and my family is mostly here, so I don't envision myself relocating.

I do hope, as you hint, that Texas will lead the way for many of us out of this nightmare of leftism.

Stephanie

So Brit closes with the newt unfavorable ratings and how Congress is gonna be terrified he'll drag them down... Remind me again what congess' favorable rating is and why any pres candidate would want to be seen with any of them.

And remind me again why these are the cream of the pundit class?

Rick Ballard

Governor Romney should do very well in the Blue Hells where has absolutely no chance of prevailing in the general. He might even do well enough to get the nomination and win the election. He will owe the Blue Hell Fnorks big time and the Free Staters nothing.

If he gets clipped again in Florida, the dynamic will change substantially and the Fnorks should go to full panic mode.

Porchlight

You're welcome, PDinDetroit. H/t the HotAir commenters, I picked it up there.

And to think I was at that very spot in Disney World a month ago. Glad I was able to enjoy it before he sullied it all up.

narciso

No, the attitude against the British, the Spanish, and the Cherokee in that order,

clarice feldman

In Fla Newt says he'd consider Allen West as his running mate.

narciso

Oh no he didn't, he brought a teleprompter to Disneyworld?

Stephanie

I'm in Georgia.

Perry's focus on the 10th with Newt is interesting. Texas is the only southern state to have reserved the right to reseceed should the occasion warrant is all I'm saying.

hit and run

clarice:
Hmmm …. Gingrich won women by 38-19 percent over Romney

Methinks that was a typo by Jon Karl (where LI got those numbers.

When I posted the exit polls on the last thread,Newt had the female vote 36/30 over Romney. But clicking on them again now,it is 38/29

Not 19.

I think typo on Karl's part.

centralcal

Thanks Steph, for the clarification. I am not following as closely as I could be, because I have a houseful of granddaughters. (fun, fun, fun - really!)

clarice feldman

Thanks, hit. Still, that puts paid to Marianne's vengeful interview, doesn't it? And then there are the posts--here,as I recall--about Romney had this deep pull for women voters.

clarice feldman

My husband has Matthew's on --yuck--

(Another) Barbara

Don't know about you, but I'm buying shares in Sackcloth and Ashes. A huge demand lies ahead.

Porchlight

centralcal, your friend sounds delightful and I would love to meet her!

Sorry if this posts twice, having typepad problems...

clarice feldman

Just checking to see if the apostrophe monitors are still awake.

centralcal

We all know that Hugh Hewitt is an avid Romney supporter. So I hope these words of his - posted at NRO's The Corner - will resonate with Romney and those who champion him:

Incredibly the GOP next turns its fate over to NBC on Monday night. Advice to Mitt and Rick: Don’t copy Newt, but understand that he won in South Carolina because he absolutely refuses to let the MSM set the agenda, which is the president’s agenda.
clarice feldman

I see the light is dawning, cc.

hit and run

ccal:
Thanks Steph, for the clarification. I am not following as closely as I could be, because I have a houseful of granddaughters.

Heh. If only someone had put together a spreadsheet.....;-)

Stephanie

Women tend to like men that are type A personalities when they feel there is a need to protect the nest, and I would not classify the recent Romney performances as advertising that he can defend women or their children from the Obama menace.

Wymin? Well Ive got a feeling those vagina dentata would not vote for anyone they can't consume.

narciso

It's astounding that they need to reminded of this, what are they paying these Fnorksters for,

rrpjr

So I guess, Marianne, you really weren't able to "end his career with a single interview."

centralcal

Honestly, I have been thinking of you (and me, and all of us) tonight (Another) Barbara.

Porch, I will probably be contacting you eventually about her. She is one strong young conservative woman, with a great and smart head on her shoulders. However, I do want to allow her space to settle in and get her bearings, before I send out a motherly chaperone to check on her. ::wink::

Stephanie

Oh no he didn't, he brought a teleprompter to Disneyworld?

Maybe they left it as a souvenir of the trip to be added to the Hall of Presidents.

centralcal

heh, HIt! You smart aleck! Ah yes, the spreadsheet - if only I could find it again in the miasma of my email maze (a Windows' product - need I say more?)

Oh and to the apostrophe police - please, please do not tell me it is Windowses - okay!

Porchlight

Fair enough, centralcal. :) I look forward to it whenever it happens.

Captain Hate

SC made big mistake.

Why? Because they didn't vote the way some dipshit pundit wanted? Sounds like a Rovian temper tantrum. That process of people voting for whom they want sounds like it really bugs you, son. Maybe you need a tall order of STFU delivered to your house from some South Carolina source.

Or maybe the party of stoopid needs to tighten up their primary rules, which nobody seems willing to finger the state parties or anybody being guilty for this happening; so maybe the entire primary system is flawed with no hope of redemption if nobody seems willing to do more than say "tsk tsk" when it happens.

Porchlight

Saw a report that Paterno has not died, but remains in serious condition.

Stephanie

Heh. If only someone had put together a spreadsheet.....;-)

I'm still relegated to the iPhone as my computer is being rebuilt by my son who is working full time going to college with a full load and a fiancé who is in the weeds planning a wedding at flank speed. I might see it sometime in February/March ?? where I can finally download said spreadsheet back to the hard drive from my email account where I had the good sense to save the email with attachments. My last three backups were corrupted and I lost pretty much everything else.

Can't wait to contact turbotax and pray that they have a system file stored of my tax return from last year. I've got all the others on my end of 2010 backup but thought for sure doing weekly backups with 3 mirrors before I overwrote would be adequate. Not! Sigh.

Porchlight

I agree about the GOP being stupid about primary rules, but can't be just Dems voting in the primary that caused this, Cap'n. Newt is on track for a 15 point win and he just may win every county in the state.

McCain won by 3 IIRC.

Porchlight

Also seeing reports that turnout is substantially higher than 2008. I *guess* that could be because of Dems coming out to vote for Newt, but that would have had to have been a huge underground campaign to turn them out and I think we would have heard about it by now.

flodigarry

Stephanie,

I generally like Brit Hume, but his anger over Newt's win was hard for him to disguise, and I thought the less of him for it.

This race will have more twists and turns and I don't think we have seen anything near the end of the drama.

God help us.

Captain Hate

Yes Porch; ESPN radio and sports bbs were loaded with info on his situation being extremely serious. It was regularly reported that he was seriously worried about dying after leaving the game as Bear Bryant did very shortly after retiring. Still if the administration had done the right thing and forced him to retire, no matter what would've happened subsequently he wouldn't be as tied to the Sandusky situation, which will unfortunately now be what most people think of in association with his name. Truth be known, after building a record of running a clean program, for at least the last couple decades it's been indistinguishable from any large program, complete with thuggish on and off campus attacks by the football players. There are often good reasons for people to retire.

centralcal

Brett Baier tweeted that Gingrich won 44 out of 46 counties.

centralcal

Agree, flodigarry - on all your points.

clarice feldman

I love Brit. You must understand that Newt burned a lot of bridges as Speaker and there are many fine people in D.C. who regard him as a poor choice. I wouldn't be surprised to learn Brit is one of them.

Danube of Thought

Doom.

PDinDetroit

Stephanie - are you in the Detroit area? Computers are "my thang". LUN.

flodigarry

Clarice - point taken.

Stephanie

((I generally like Brit Hume, but his anger over Newt's win was hard for him to disguise, and I thought the less of him for it.))

So it wasn't just me who saw the anger. I was surprised and disappointed as well and took his parting " congress and the establishment will have the last word on this outrage!!!!!" as particularly Rovenesque in its vinegar. Really reminded me of Rove's temper tantrum after O'Donnell won last year.

Porchlight

I love Brit too, but I would have expected him to have tried a little harder to hide it. He is first class so I expect he'll regain his equilibrium pretty quickly.

Newt did burn bridges, but if the DC elite don't like the way things are shaking out, they should have found a stronger candidate to back than Romney.

Captain Hate

That makes sense Clarice but it sounds like Brit is acting as if they voted for David Duke; and I say that as somebody who believes Noot would be a trainwreck of a presidential candidate. I think it's at least a vote on how poor a job Romney and his people are doing at running a campaign.

Janet

Why is Romney the chosen one? He couldn't even beat McCain last time. Why would we choose someone that lost to the guy that lost to Obama?

clarice feldman

Of course, it's a vote on how awful Romney and his campaign staff are doing. Amateur hour B.S. at a time when people-- want plain talk and clear enunciation of policies and principles he spouts pablum .

Stephanie

((Don't know about you, but I'm buying shares in Sackcloth and Ashes. A huge demand lies ahead.))

I'd suggest lying back and thinking of the queen, but he and his wife are who we are trying to rid ourselves of.

I'm in Georgia, PD and the new motherboard is in hand ( as was the new hard drive and power supply and I don't remember what else the computer BSOD indicated needed fixing - after each piece was acquired and a reload was attempted). My son works for a large computer retail company so I'm buying at his discount thank goodness.

Barbara

Does anyone think that Romney and his campaign can get it together after this defeat? I have my doubts. (BTW, where the heck are those tax records, Mitt?)

It seems that Gingrich has located Romney's Achilles heal - his unwillingness to bend, his inability to deviate from his chosen course.

Gingrich also has his fatal flaws. They must be sipping champagne at the White House tonight.

As DoT said, doom.

narciso

Yes, well they are always opposed to the insurgent candidates, apriori whether Bachmann, Cain or Perry, so that's not really
a surprise.

Sara

why any pres candidate would want to be seen with any of them.

Wasn't he talking about those running, not existing Members and Senators? That was my take.

Clarice: Who was claiming Romney has the woman vote? I've heard a couple male pundits on TV say that, but I don't recall that here. Democratic women may vote for their heartthrob, I don't think that is much of a criteria for Republican women, at least I haven't seen it much. I sure hope it isn't.

clarice feldman

Piffle, doom sayers.. Piffle. I have great faith that Obama is a one termer..I just want the best campaigner to win and Romney has not persuaded me it is he.
Next person here who calls him the most "electable" will have that quoted back to him over and over again..

clarice feldman

Please, Sara..can't you remember what you post from minute to minute..remember that carp about women worth their salt just KNOWING?

If Romney had the instincts to win, those staffers of his who sent the cake to Newt today would be hanging by their thumbs outside his campaign HQ tonight.

narciso

It's not like Sun Tzu, you actually have to fight the battle, that being said, Romney picked possibly the worse possible ground,
in S. Carolina, re his support for the Detroit
bailout, in Toyota country! sticking to MassCare so diligently,
