David Axelrod thinks Mitt Romney would not have had the guts to order the bin Laden kill. On what planet? And what guts? Only a squishy liberal would think that, IMO. Do they really think that it took bravery on Obama's part to order this kill? Wasn't there a huge bounty on bin Laden's head offered by the U.S. government? Other than the Jihadi apologists and the addle-headed truthers, who would have objected, once the logistics were laid out and shown to have a good chance of success?

... criticize Mitt Romney and you’re called a meanie. Most of the people I’ve witnessed using this argument have been in politics longer than I’ve been alive, so unless the landscape has changed recently and I missed the memo, politics is still a bloodsport. No one is calling Romney an “angry little muffin” for doing exactly what Gingrich is doing; the difference is that Romney has a frillion groups and admirers doing it for him so he can keep his mitts clean and appear above the fray. If the tactic seems familiar, it’s because Barack Obama is famous for it. I’m not comparing Obama to Romney, just simply pointing out that they happen to share more in common besides health care.
I think that's fair.

Clarice

I don't know about you, GH, but I plan on being here in 1500 years to make sure the BBC prediction was accurate.

Carp, can't get this to post with links so will break it in half:

Matt,

Uh oh! Ice conditions raise worry about feasibility of Nome fuel delivery:

"Shifting ice in the Bering Sea that at times is pinching the sides of a Russian tanker is raising the specter that a mission to deliver fuel to an iced-in Alaska community might not be possible...the worst-case scenario is that the ice may become too much for the Russian tanker to move forward, and it won't make it to Nome."

Thats from the ADN. Now lets see what the other News organ up her (The Alaska Dispatch Blog which is eating the SADN's lunch) has to say:

Jack is Back!

I am trying to remember the commentor who would show up from time to time with these little creative vignettes of the Obama WH featuring Axelrod and his "moustache with penguin shuffling walk" type descriptions? He/she would show up like once every year or so.

Jack Lew will become the WH chief of staff.

Could someone please explain to me why we are paying a budget director when we haven't had a budget in 3 years?

Carp...Lost the 2nd half. Grrrrr.

From the Alaska Dispatch:

Update from the Renda: Looks like a Wednesday arrival

"The Renda and Healy made approximately 15 nautical miles of progress yesterday. As a safeguard to crew endurance, the vessels shut down for a 6 hour resting period last night...(they) are in the grip of some colossal forces. Cold, cold. Minus twenty and dropping. Today was tough going, with only a few more miles under our belts toward Nome. Numerous obstacles have presented themselves. For instance, for the greater part of the day tide(s) and current continue to "compress" the ice around Renda, causing the ice pack to behave like a giant set of brake pads."

"The ship has literally run into the primary "headwall" of the lead pack ice that is flowing down from the Bering Strait. While "stopped" here resting, all aboard are assessing the difficult terrain ahead. Healy's old track has filled with "Shuga" which is Russian for ice that has been broken by a ship's hull and propeller.'

Could someone please explain to me why we are paying a budget director when we haven't had a budget in 3 years?

It's like "jobs created and/or saved." If we didn't have a budget director we wouldn't have had a budget in 6 years! Er, no, that doesn't work. How about: If we didn't have a budget director, we'd be even farther away from getting our next budget.

Jack is Back!

DoT,

Its what lost me on Gingrich and Santorum. Ridiculous. Criticizing the American dream and entrepreneurship. Almost like Red Ken Livingston's argument that capitalism has killed more people than communism.

jimmyk

This alone is reason enough to support Romney over anyone who stoops to that bullshit.

Yes, but it would be nice if Romney had a powerful response nonetheless, as opposed to apologizing by saying he'll only cut capital gains taxes for people earning under $250,000 or whatever his harebrained scheme is.

(I'm not saying he actually said this in response to the attack, just being impressionistic here.)

Clarice

I think the appointment of Lew is an acknowledgement that the WH needs to work with Congress --he started out working for Tip O'Neill and is well-respected on the Hill. Unlike Daley, Jack knows the Hill and its ways.

boris

"I'm not saying he actually said this ..."

Then again saying "I like to be in a position to fire people" may not be a better one.

Sara

Romney campaign response to the attacks on his Bain experience:

“It is no surprise that, having spent nearly half a century in government between them, Speaker Gingrich and Governor Perry have resorted to desperate attacks on a subject they don’t understand,” said Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul in a statement. “We expect attacks on free enterprise from President Obama and his allies on the left – not from so-called ‘fiscal conservatives.’ Speaker Gingrich and Governor Perry seem to think that running against the private sector is the way to revive their floundering campaigns. Governor Romney will continue talking about his experience in the real economy, his vision for getting America back to work, and how important it is that we defeat President Obama in November.”
Jane

It's like "jobs created and/or saved." If we didn't have a budget director we wouldn't have had a budget in 6 years!

LOL

So who will replace Lew? Michelle has certainly wasted enough money to qualify.

daddy

Give up?

What includes 4 "Fucks," and a "Fuck her too"?

Answer: A conversation between Obama Admin personnel, Valerie Jarrett and Robert Gibb's, discussing our wonderful First Lady, Moochelle.

Hat Tip Althouse for the inspiration.

Sara

Then again saying "I like to be in a position to fire people" may not be a better one.

This is taken out of context. He was talking about bad health care providers.

Hudson, N.H. — Mitt Romney defended his “I like being able to fire people” comment from earlier this morning, stressing that he had been speaking about the importance of allowing people to choose their own health care provider, and if need be, fire that provider.
Rick Ballard

Clarice,

The question is "What has BOzo planned that is so bad that a Daley is running away before it's even announced?". Daley has been clear about wanting access to the dock for months (ever since he noted that the gangplank was running uphill). Something has moved him from a trot to a canter.

Porchlight

Still, Sara, he's having to defend the statement now, which means it was at minimum poorly worded. Lots of ammo for Dem ads there.

Porchlight

Sarah Palin says what many have been thinking:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said the mainstream media and President Barack Obama “want to face Mitt Romney in the general election.” ....

Palin said the mainstream media would take a hands-off approach to Romney “in order to bolster Romney’s chances” to “finally face Obama.”

According to Palin, the mainstream media and Obama would then portray Romney as someone who is out of touch with regular Americans in the general election.

“They are already gearing up to portray him, accurately or inaccurately … as being out of touch with the working class,” Palin said, nothing that Romney’s wealth and perfect family may make it easy to paint him as someone “being a bit out of touch from working and middle class Americans and from the challenges we all face.”

Sure looks like that's what's happening. I can't say as any of the others would fare any better, however. I do think they are scared that Santorum can attract working class voters.

Clarice

Rick,I think Daley was offered the C of S job to make way for Rahm, They don't need him any more and I expect he's finding the position intolerable.

Clarice

From abc:

"Daley was brought in to replace Rahm Emanuel, but in November his role was “changed,” with more power given to senior adviser Pete Rouse. At the time White House officials insisted the move was in no way a demotion, but it certainly wasn’t a vote of confidence."

Porchlight

According to the WH Insider, for what it's worth, Daley clashed with Jarrett. Although the source is sketchy, I don't find that difficult to believe.

Jimbeau

If you want to see a preview of what the "Bain" campaign against Romney will look like, go to YouTube and Search on "Tom Foley Bibb".

Tom Foley was a candidate for CT governor in 2010, and a former venture capitalist, who had bought and restructured a company called Bibb, located in Georgia.

These ads were run by both Republican primary rival Mike Fedele, and the eventual election winner Democrat Dan Malloy.

Neo

According to The Atlantic Wire, however, the White House has now disputed the Guardian's report:

In a statement to The Atlantic Wire, National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor dismissed the The Guardian's story. "This report is not accurate," he said. "The United States has not decided to release any Taliban officials from Guantanamo Bay in return for the Taliban's agreement to open a political office for peace negotiations."

NK

Clarice-- hate to disagree, but as I said on the prior thread, Lew's COS job description will be limited to making sure no one steals office equipment or furniture from the West Wing during the next 13 months. The Chief is/are Axelrod/Plouffe. NOTHING matters to 'Bam/Mooschelle/Jarret except winning the POTUS election, and they will try to make that happen, so they control everything now.

NK

Jimbeau-- correct. Interesting thing though, in Deep Blue Ct. that attack had limited effect. Drunken Dan needed some dodgy Bridgeport ballots to avoid a recount.

matt

daddy;

shame on you for making me read that drivel. It's all so hopey changey that I threw up a little bit in my mouth.

I mean, Michelle comes off better than "any other First Lady evah!" in that article, and I was so touched by her involvement in her children's lives and the way she convinced their piano teacher to relocate from Chicago.

Jackie O comes off as so vain and one dimensional and fuggedabout poor Pat Nixon who was so horribly abused by Dick. It's a real shame Betty Ford was such a lush she allowed her name to be put on a rehab center. And on. And on. And on.

The sycophants will be spinning the same bushwa even as the stories continue to unfold. If they could hide the Halloween party for over 18 months, imagine what else they're hiding.

Captain Hate

I do think they are scared that Santorum can attract working class voters.

Maybe but I don't see Santorum ever attracting a large amount of support. I hate to say this because it's nothing of substance but he's very charismatically-challenged imo.

I thought this was the usual dribble about Chevez ...

Michelle Malkin reports Depp does not show up on the WH visitors' log:

"Well, I’ve just finished scouring the White House visitor logs. Regular readers know I seem to be one of the few in the media who actually does such a thing. Regular readers also know that I’ve pointed out time and again that the logs are incomplete, misleading, obtuse, and designed to make it as difficult as possible to figure out who has visited and when. So, it is no surprise that neither director Tim Burton nor actor Johnny Depp — hosts of the big 2009 Hollywood Halloween bash at the White House — show up in the visitor logs. "

Yeah, Santorum isn't Mr. Charisma but I'm not sure voters will care much about that after a four-year go-round with The Most Unbelievably Handsome, Smart, Charming and Atheltically Gifted Man On Earth.

At any rate, the alternatives aren't real charismatic either.

The thing about Kantor's book and all the other "inside" exposes or revelations is what they don't tell you (i.e. his opaque background and life influences, etc.) including about Michelle's middle-class but still entitled advancement through life.

She lost me back during the 08 campaign with her "pride in America for the first time" remark. More up here stuff on the Oil Industry:

Last week a Judge up here decided to raise the estimated value of the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Following multiple Lawsuits from communities along the pipelines 800 mile route, Judges up here have raised the Taxable value of the 40 year old Pipeline, from @ $4 Billion in 2004 to a current $9.25 Billion, thus taking multiple more millions of mandated Tax Dollars from the Gas Companies into those townships.

In a story today the ADN discusses how it is that the Judge was able to determine that the Oil Pipeline could last far longer than the Oil Companies and their Engineers generally believe it can last, and how it will be able to pump oil at greatly reduced volumes that the Oil Companies generally believe it cannot function at.

It's pretty much inside Baseball sort of stuff, but ignoring most of the other Pipeline Oil Companies conclusions, the Judge relied (according to a previous ADN story) on a BP consultants study in 2006 who concluded that "...with heaters, booster pumps, new piping and valves, and more use of devices called pigs that can scrape wax buildup and prevent blockages..." the 800 mile long pipeline might be able to continue with flows as low as 70,000 - 100,000 barrels a day, unlike the generally accepted figure of 300,000 barrels minimum.

Alyeska for instance testified that "it is "not possible" for the pipeline to operate below 300,000 barrels a day," but Judge Gleason responded that "she found that testimony, when considered with all of the other evidence at trial presented on this topic, to be completely unpersuasive."

So she decided that the Pipeline was worth 9.25 Billion, that it could operate into 2065 on very reduced volumes, and the Dem's up here, the Trial Lawyer's, the Township's along the Pipeline's path and the haters of Big Oil are jubilant about her decision.

I don't know enough to have a legitimate opinion, but my oil neighbors are less than enthused. We are currently pumping at 600,000 Barrels a day and generally declining about 5 to 6 percent per year in volume as the North Slope old fields diminish.

Janet

Here is another update at Verum Serum -
"Final update: Here’s an interesting little tidbit from an AP report in October 2009:

But the White House refused to say where Sasha and Malia Obama were celebrating Halloween and what the two girls were wearing, even though hundreds of other children their ages were in costume in full view of the media. The White House referred back to first lady Michelle Obama’s comment to Jay Leno, that finding out what Sasha and Malia were wearing would require “security clearance.”

I’m sure this secrecy had nothing to do with the fact that the costumes Sasha and Malia wore (see photo above) were clearly chosen to fit with the Alice in Wonderland themed event.

I know this may be one of the most ridiculous White House cover-ups of all time, but there is no question they tried to hide this from the public and are continuing to lie about it."

MarkO

Janet, if they would hide Halloween, what else wouldn't they hide.

NK

OK ranger, thanks

Jack is Back!

daddy,

Alyeska may be correct depending on the min. flows used in the hydraulic calculations. I'll have to do some research.

Pipelines are engineered to min, max and optimum operating standards in order to size the pumps, valving, slug catchers, gas capture, etc. Plus you have the unique environmental issues in Alaska requirement permanent viscosity maintenance during transport. Don't forget the oil quality and specification which also determines the engineered development of the system.

I am surprised the assessment is almost double of Alyeska's estimate. But then this is how the polticians, PSC's and judges like to see if they can claw out a little bit more. I don't see how a pipeline of that dimension (length, looping and diameter) plus its number of booster stations all sized to a minimum volume can avoid some reliability issues over time if it is asked to do less than designed for. Also, when you get down to the bottom of the resevoir you pick up all kinds of stuff that isn't part of the calculation and could be chemically damaging to pumps, valves and wall thickness.

Just saying.

Romney campaign response to the attacks on his Bain experience

That's a decent beginning of a response. But it's a bit vague. Why not confront the charge head-on? A couple of us suggested last week that he could say that he saved jobs by turning around companies (in contrast with Obama's phony "jobs saved or created).

And I'm still steamed about his limiting the cap gains tax cut to people making under $200,000. I'd rather he not cut it at all, and instead cut the corporate income tax rate, for example, then do this and send the signal that the tax code isn't progressive enough.
