Cap'n, glad to see you here, too. I had a rare free weekend...otherwise I'd be here more often. How in the hell do y'all regulars keep up with all these threads? No new music recs from me, I'm still enjoying Lydia Loveless.
The only film that did decent business in that genre was 'Green Zone' by our 'favorite' Harvard drop out, Matt Damon, or as they said in Team America, Matt Daamon,
Has anyone actually posted a comment regarding Oscar?
I hope not. Bunch of leftist twits who deserve each other.
Frederick wants to go see The Lorax on Friday - no school. But I have to get to the theater first to see Act of Valor.
Any idea what the stupid political word speak will be tonight? Bush is way gone. The Won has apologized for everything right about us and Sean Penn is in Haiti trying to get out of what he started.
Anyone want to bet on Catholics and contraception or woman's health? That or the corruption of drilling for oil and the Koch brothers.
Jan Brewer should have stuffed it in David Gregory and Obamas face this morning when asked about turning down the dinner invite.
She should have simply said, she will not go to any social event where the President provides more security then he does on the border.
Just say, David, it is my understanding that the President will be checking peoples papers at the shin dig he's throwing the same way he condemns Arizona for checking people papers.
((I hope not. Bunch of leftist twits who deserve each other.))
I am rooting for Howard Shore to win best original musical score. I don't know if he's a lefty twit but anyone who could compose TLOTR Symphony is ok by me, and I haven't even seen Hugo.
Card. George publishes a blistering column on religious liberty (not contraception):
"....The provision of health care should not demand “giving up” religious liberty. Liberty of religion is more than freedom of worship. Freedom of worship was guaranteed in the Constitution of the former Soviet Union. You could go to church, if you could find one....The observance of Lent reminds us that, in the end, we all stand before Christ and give an accounting of our lives. From that perspective, I ask lay Catholics and others of good will to step back and understand what is happening to our country as the church is despoiled of her institutions and as freedom of conscience and of religion become a memory from a happier past."
It's really worth reading in full (LUN). He always speaks bluntly, but this is stronger than anything I have seen before, with allusions to Alinskyite tactics (coopt or isolate and destroy) etc. I wonder whether any Catholic Obamaphiles will reconsider their allegiances. My own neighbors? I fear not.
Not picking on you personally, Mustang, but I've seen this mentioned here many times recently (and I missed the Obama quote that gave rise to the discussion).
In my opinion the use of algae to make biofuels is probably the most promising of all the the alternative strategies I've seen. There are still some issues to work out, and it is probably a decade or so away, but this is one approach to keep an eye on.
As my contribution to the environment; I am perfectly willing to cancel the Oscars, Emmys, Grammy's, Golden Globes, Cann, etc. etc. for now and all time.
Now who in Hollywood has a bigger commitment to the environment then me???
Sustainable Developers rally around the concepts within their "three E's" symbol. The three E's are Equity, Economy and Environment.
• Equity means to restructure human nature and to enforce that restructure by shifting our system of justice from one that adheres to the principle of equal justice and unalienable rights to one that implements the concept of "social justice."
• Economy means shifting from free enterprise to "public private partnerships." It also means establishment of a global economy where goods "freely" cross national borders in order to redistribute financial, natural and human resources in order to equalize the income distribution within and between nations.
• Environment means giving plants, animals and even inanimate objects status equal to or even greater than the rights of human beings.
The three components of Sustainable Development are global land use, global education, and global population control and reduction. This is accomplished through land and resource restriction, social transformation through education, and control over health care.
If I was in charge of the RNC, I would definitely drive this car out on stage at the Convention and point out that Obamas green push costing us hundreds of billions of dollars has given us a vehicle that gets the same mileage as one from 115 years ago.
I would have Sarah Palin drive it out with a 'Drill, Baby, Drill" bumper sticker.
The owner of this vintage electric powered car is laughing all the way to the bank. As Chevy Volt owners dish out almost $32,000, he is driving this 115 year old vehicle with the exact same mileage around town.
Built in 1896, the Roberts electric vehicle gets 40 miles to a charge, just like the Volt. The owner of the vehicle says that it runs like a top, even competing in some classic car derbies and doing well.
Thanks for that epistle from Cardinal George. He is setting the table for the big guy (Dolan) when the gunfight starts. If I was Obama I would start worrying about the fact that they.are.not.caving. I wonder if it was Siberlius, a Catholic but hardly practicing, who told him "don't worry I know these guys, they will bargain with us and take a penny for a dollar". Well, they are not going to pay-to-play and this has changed the dynamics of were even moderate to liberal political Catholics stand.
Once again they are missing the point - if you can mandate health insurance what else can you mandate? Electric cars? Solar power? Catholic provided contraception? Kosher pork?
They are fools and have no idea on how this is playing with the public.
Thanks. And to answer your question, yes it will. Lots. Not all, but enough it may well make several swing states much more likely to go Republican. Write your parish priest and tell him he must speak out and speak out clearly.
when I was thinking about Howard Shore today, I remembered reading something a while back about a dad who commited to reading LOTR, the whole trilogy to his son, every night, as a bedside story. It took quite a while to complete the project but he said was an incredible bonding experience between them, and I think he even said that after the last page he wept. I can't remember where I read or heard that anecdote.
Dr J. It was the 2012 version of "check the air in your tires". It was a stupid response to high gasoline prices. If we can turn algae into a fuel source, it will be many years and no telling if it will ever be cost effective.
Mad Jack exactly what have they done that conveys anything other than steely resolve. The rhetoric invoking St Michael the Archangel is your first clue, this is war and a fight against evil. This is not Bishop Rowan of the Anglican Church...
Gmax, thanks for the context. If Obama held out that algae will have anything effect at all on short-term gasoline prices, well, I'd like some of what he is smoking.
jimmyk: JMH seems to have disappeared as well, no? Though I think she might have checked in a few weeks back.

Bruce Krasting read some foreign press today, and saw something a bit off by the big pharmas of the EU. They're not getting paid for the goods they ship to the PIIGS.
After much backsliding we have moved to a Gandalf, 'thou shalt not pass' moment, the shadows reflected on the cave, make it a little hard to tell the exact impact yet,
That was Clapton before Cream right, you can correct my musical illiteracy 'if needs must'
Mel, that the PIIGS (and Greece in particular) are not paying the Pharma companies is old news. I thought I read about a month ago that many were requiring cash for any new shipments, which is contrary to the ZH article.
Just fulling around with some pics this afternoon, and I may be biased, but isn't this about the best profile ever?
There will be no Fibonacci sequences forthcoming.
Maybe Greece could announce that the absence of drugs is simply a test of the Agenda 21 Pharmacological Sustainability program? Medical drugs will become available for free again as soon as a suitable adjustment period has been completed. During the adjustment period, the Greek State will offer free cremation in lieu of filling prescriptions at no cost.
It could be a real win-win for the Progressive Movement.
Just unleash the Kraken already, it can 't be much worse, It's interesting in going back to the seat of Democracy with the Corby series, first with Pericles and then Themistocles, how

Mrs. JiB has dowloaded LOTR score and Frederick has read the books. The movies are a little overwhelming for him. Heck, even me, sometimes. My wife is very creative and has perfect contra-alto pitch. She can play music by ear and sing with the angels. Me? Meh!
She tells me it is the closest thing to a classic concerto of music she had heard from a movie score. She plays it when painting, designing and framing. I am going to download for my bike rides. Very majestic music even for a jazz nut.

Hit a 135 one night in Korea with a load of stuff hanging off an F-4; finally got to mil power on both engines; then surprised the boomie by stroking min burner on one engine while throttling position with the other; quite a show I'm sure.
"It's great news. These filmmakers are true blue, and working with the SEALs on this film has been an awe striking experience. What integrity and quiet courage.
Not to be a buzzkill but that film is supposed to be outstanding and maybe should be the best film in the awards period. Iran isn't all nutjobs and ignorance; there are a lot of Persians that are western oriented. Neda wasn't an isolated case no matter how much El JEFe ignored her and her ilk.
One year, probably a decade ago, my niece won a trip to the Oscars and called me as I was on my way to Newport for a few says vacation, and invited me to go with her. It was about 10 days before the awards.
So I went to Newport and went shopping: "I 'm looking for some earrings to wear to the Oscars".
The response: "What award are you up for". It was hysterical. And I milked it. I shopped for Shoes, dress, jewels, as if I was a star. After a few days I told the person I was with, that I really didn't care if I went to the Oscars, I was having so much fun getting ready.
A few days before we were set to leave, my niece's company was informed the people they hired to get the tickets were a fraud, and there were no tickets. I didn't even care.
Not to be a buzzkill but that film is supposed to be outstanding and maybe should be the best film in the awards period.
I saw it, and it was quite good, though I didn't see any of the other nominees to compare. I was wary of being fed propaganda, but didn't come away from it feeling like it was that at all.
Iggy, we are all hoping and praying for your lovely wife.
A tidbit I learned from a review of Matthew Aid's Intelligence Wars, did you know that
Wanda Sykes was a former procurement officer
for the NSA in the 80s. 'Abandon all hope',
NSA isn't exactly a training ground for a career in comedy; at least the intentional kind. Or anything that involves interacting with other human beings.
It's suggests 'Spies like Me' was more cinema verite then we first thought, another rocket
surgeon who came from there, Wayne Madsen, the
Chavez loving Lou Abbott of the VIPs set.
Captain: Iran isn't all nutjobs and ignorance; there are a lot of Persians that are western oriented.
I've mentioned before that my next door neighbor is Iranian. He was born in Tehran but came to the US at a young age to live with his uncle.
Maybe you remember the story of my neighbor pilot who flew Mitt Romney a couple of months ago?
Maybe you don't. I'm easily ignored, but that was him.
He returned to Iran to see his parents recently -- and while there things got tense and we were afraid his getting home would be . . . complicated.
His dad also recently came here -- he barely speaks any English, but we spent a good few hours in their driveway sanding a table. We brought over a power sander -- but the dad refused and took the hand sander and went at it like he was half my age. I think he's 80.
I love my neighbor and his family. Just awesome people.

DoT:
A very proud uncle, I must say.
I'm proud to say I know (in the sense one "knows" someone over the internet) the niece more than uncle at this point.

I could tell sammy was USAF by the "female" F-4...Marines flew "manly" F-4s!
(kidding, sammy! and all you other potentially-planet-busting SAC guys, too! Anybody flew F-4s is OK with me!)

Cap'n, I am now..."a fine line between punk & country...Portuguese...from MA." Good lookin', too! I'm there!
Thanks!

For heaven's sake, Iran won best foreign film.

Live from the Oscars!
Per DoT: "Terry's brother (nephew Larry, former F-18 pilot)":
For those just tuning in,Terry is DoT's niece who has worked on Act of Valor.

Mustang, I saw her live in a small club last summer. Total sweetheart and very fan friendly; even to an old goat like me.

I have a funny Oscar story.

OK, Captain.
The clips looked interesting and the movie is The Separation.

I saw it, and it was quite good, though I didn't see any of the other nominees to compare. I was wary of being fed propaganda, but didn't come away from it feeling like it was that at all.
Iggy, we are all hoping and praying for your lovely wife.

Thanks for doing that, Hit.
Those kids would probably kill me if they knew.

In Muffer's defense, I'm sure that apology was applauded by all the career quislings at State.

A tidbit I learned from a review of Matthew Aid's Intelligence Wars, did you know that
Wanda Sykes was a former procurement officer
for the NSA in the 80s. 'Abandon all hope',

Happy Birthday.

Whoops!
It's "A" Separation not "The".
Posted by: glasater | February 26, 2012 at 09:31 PM
NSA isn't exactly a training ground for a career in comedy; at least the intentional kind. Or anything that involves interacting with other human beings.

sammy small, Wine induced confusion. I see F-4 and think A-4.
And for JOM audience the Phantom II was to me the loudest most scary fighter evah, right sammy?

Captain:
Iran isn't all nutjobs and ignorance; there are a lot of Persians that are western oriented.
