Santorum catches Romney in a national poll, which calls for a Rick Roll open thread.
In another month Mitt will be well positioned as the 'Anybody But Santorum' candidate.

Just a small correction to your dynamite thoughts, Pops:

I was taught that a two-handed automatic weapon that fires a pistol cartridge is called a sub-machine gun.
Correct. Or "machine pistol." These were perfected before assault rifles (e.g., the Thompson, or Schmeisser), but didn't really fill the requirement for an optimal assault weapon.
Actually, it has a significant effect on function. It allows you to fire from the hip more effectively than without it.
I can peform the standard USMC "quick kill" hip shot just as effectively with a standard mini-14 as with an M-16. (And I agree it's useful in urban settings . . . which is why they taught us the technique in urban assault training.) There's also plenty of good Vietnam video of Marines assaulting with the regular M-14 at the hip, though I can't find any on youtube.

urban Iraq vs the desert and Afghanistan, Ranger. Two very different wars. Unfortunately, Afghanistan was put on the back burner for 6 years and now it's going to blow up in our faces.
I never could figure out the grease gun, though. Almost all aluminum and the barrel would droop after 100 rounds of high cyclic fire. Believe it or not, these are still in inventory with NG units.

From the Daily Caller via Insty: Obama-appointed Illinois judge looks to SC for rulings instead of the Constitution. (surprise, surprise):
... anyone who wonders what this assault on the Second Amendment might look like need look no further than Illinois, where a judge that President Obama appointed has just ruled that we have the right to keep arms, but not to bear them.
That’s not a typo. Rather, it’s an unbelievable decision recently delivered by U.S. Judge Sue Myerscough, in a challenge which the Second Amendment Foundation filed against Illinois’s ongoing prohibition against carrying concealed weapons in that state. Said Myerscough, in rendering her decision: “[Although the] plaintiffs argue that the Second Amendment protects a general right to carry guns that include a right to carry operable guns in public … [the] Supreme Court has not recognized a right to bear firearms outside the home.”

Hmmm. Self-awareness emerges.....too late.

Frau, that's the rule in D.C., too.
Adeven then they make it almost impossible to get a license for a gun to defend your home. A writer from the Washington Times has been documenting the hassle they put you thru.

Matt, I carried a grease gun in Vietnam for a while, just because it was there, and for the novelty of it. If you started firing with the barrel horizontal and raised it toward the vertical, you could hear the rate of fire slow as the bolt struggled against gravity. I believe the thing had three moving parts.
I was told that it was designed for tankers to use as a street-sweeper in the event they had to get out of the tank in hostile territory. Just stick it up through the hatch and spray the surroundings before sticking your head out. No idea if that's true.

Yes, that's about the size of it. It was designed around the size limitations of being able to get it into, out of, and stored in a tank. How well it actually worked as an SMG was a secondary issue.

CT, I won't disagree with you on any particular point. I'll just say that the the pistol grip is pretty much the only thing that seperates an assult rifle from a carbine. I will say that I personally prefer the pistol grip to the rifle grip, but I only ever trained with the M16, and the few times I shot a rifle without a pistol grip, I didn't like it as much.
I did know a guy who was in one of the first USMC units in Vietnam that was issued the M16, and they actually refused to go on patrol until they got their M14s back. Of course, those initial M16s were not very good on many levels.

ABSOLUTE MORAL AUTHORITY, BITCHES!!!!
Posted by: Dana | February 14, 2012 at 04:08 PM
true that. I saw them in a mech unit armory and was given that description.
Unfortunately, Afghanistan was always a 10-20 year commitment to which no one wanted to commit. Petraeus' surge was an effort to plug the holes and atritt the Taliban to a point where we could stabilize the Afghan government so we could transition to a training and COIN model.
Now everything is being tossed aside in a mad dash to the exits.
The fatal flaw was apparent to anyone who wanted to see in 2007. The Afghan government was corrupt beyond compare and we did nothing to hit the Taliban in their refuge or their ISI enablers within Pakistan. Pinpricks from drones don't count.
The lack of justice was perhaps our greatest oversight and where the Taliban positioned themselves as better than the ANG. Land disputes and vendettas are the primary legal issues and corrupt officials simply exacerbated the problem.
The awareness was always there, numbnuts. The commitment to do what was necessary was not.

It's never coming back:
"House Democratic leaders will support the GOP's stand-alone extension of the payroll tax holiday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday. 'We have long proposed bringing this tax cut to the floor without payfors,"'Pelosi said, 'and House Democrats will support it so that taxes are not raised on 160 million working Americans.'"

And who will pay for the missing contributions to the SS..."the children"?
We never know which end of Pelosi is talking, but it doesn't matter.

matt,
Assuming this thread isn't dead, a question for you. Your mention of competition shooters reminded me that I had a coach back in the mid 60s with your surname. His day job was a hired gun designer around Phx, but he was an awesome small bore prone shooter. He called us 'Gompers rejects.'
