It also appears that the reason Sweden's welfare state supposedly works is manufacturing the implementation of these policies. Sustainability appears to only be sustainable with public largesse.

Presidents don't control energy, I have heard.

Under my plan of a cap and trade, energy prices will NECESSARILY skyrocket, but the seas will recede and there will be PEACE throughout the middle east.

If you're getting figures from the US govt
remember they may change at any time.

Rick Ballard

NK,

EIA numbers are ludicrously understated wrt proven reserves. They have to be in order for Peak Oil propaganda to function. The EIA data on wind and solar production is likewise, very suspect, due to its tie to Skydragon propaganda.

The oil, coal and natural gas production data is not tied to any propaganda effort with the exception of the shivering delight at the reduction of employment in coal mining due to BOzo's killing jobs in order to appease the Skydragon.

narciso

Fisher is too smart for the Fed, how would you break up these banks though, some of the merged like CitiGroup, I understand,

Jack is Back!

You know in this discussion of oil production, oil prices, oil profits and gas prices we are forgetting the sad thruth of gasoline TAXES both federal and state at the pump.

Instead of tapping SPR why not put a federal and state tax holiday on the books. I believe the Feds take about 18 cents on the gallon and the states between 12 and 24 cents on the gallon (I don't have the exact numbers in front of me). I do know that on average the profit margin is somewhere between 3 and 5 cents for the oil companies. BOR is a real economic illiterate and continues to get profit mixed up with profit margin .

BTW, there a number of unused product pipelines that are being renovated to accept new loads. I think there is one that crosses Louisiana to Pasagoula to the refinery there that will soon open up. Exports of finished product are climbing.

Rick Ballard

Mel,

The EPA is using Skydragon rules to try and limit refinery operation and expansion wherever they can extend their tentacles. They want to do to energy what they've done to agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley.

You have to give them credit - the Watermelon Luddites may not be doing as much damage to the DemProg brand as BOzo but they're certainly destroying their fair share.

Gus

Unless you are retarded, and no one here is RETARDED except B.F., you understand the truth.
Obama and his band of Marxist hacks, DO NOT WANT OIL TO BE USED.
All the lies and MSM PROPAGANDA do not change that simple fact.
Obama's lie machine is banking on IDIOTS to believe his nonsensical bullshit. Going to Oklahoma was a waste of time. Okies get it.

Porchlight

Holy cow, look at Hillary in 2006 in that video posted by Janet and JeanD. Times have indeed changed. She looks 20 years younger, not 6.

rick-there are documents out there involving what holdren is up that make it perfectly clear BO is pushing to actually cut economic growth and decrease the standard of living.

How on earth can someone running for reelection survive his opponent having those documents?

Were they just thinking it wouldn't come out?

Porchlight

How on earth can someone running for reelection survive his opponent having those documents?

Been on a conference call:
RickB--USEIA reserve #s are useless I agree; Refinery Utilization % I think are reliable, in fact Bush/Cheney used them in 2001;

BenF-- which 'Bourse' and what snark are you talking about?

Jack is Back!

Refinery utilization rates are also subject to EPA and State Enviromental regs. Then you have off-line maintenance, revamps, modernization, upgrades, etc. Technology keeping pace with the regs is no easy or fast paced development especially when it comes to particulate matter at the car exhaust and then at the refinery itself. CAFE standards will effect engine design which may impact process design. Maybe there are no new grassroots refineries but there is ongoing upgrading and expansion especially on the Gulf Coast and along the eastern seaboard.

Don't forget refineries are subject to fires, explosions, malfunctions etc. that effect utilization rates and capacity.

Rick Ballard

Exxon's EBIT is 15% of revenue. They pay Uncle Sugar 42% of EBIT.

So, Exxon makes 60 cents on a $4 gallon of gas and Uncle Sugar grabs 26 cents as his share. Add the 18 cents for excise and then the 24-36 cents for sales tax for your state thieves and you arrive at 68-80 cents per gallon as your penalty for not walking wherever you wish to go.

Now shut up and be happy you don't live in EUtopia where they charge $10 per gallon and the state grabs $6.80 in order to provide you with "free" health care.

NK

JiB-- look at the USEIA chart; 1994- 2006 refinery utilization ran 90-99% (remember the Sept 2005 Katrina gasoline spike? tight refinery capacity and the Gulf refineries going off line) that has dropped markedly to 87% now. Demand destruction has reduced utilzation, even with stagnant or reduced total capacity.

BenF-- OK I will forget everything you say. Got it.

"how would you break up these banks though,"

Looks like the easiest way is for the bank to declare they are something else.

"The bank on Feb. 1 reorganized its U.S. subsidiary, known as Taunus Corp., so that it is no longer classified as a 'bank-holding company' (BHC). The technical change has important consequences. Taunus—which at the end of last year had about $354 billion of assets and 8,652 employees, making it one of the largest U.S. banking companies—won't have to comply with a provision of the U.S. Dodd-Frank regulatory-overhaul law that essentially forces the local arms of non-U.S. banks to meet the same capital requirements that American banks fact."

Strawman@1:36- fantastic snark.

narciso

No, we call 'la mentirita' the little lie, because after 50 plus years, it seems there is always opportunities to go to Danang, or Panama, or Kabul or Baghdad, but somehow Havana is never in the contingency plans.

Jack is Back!

Ig,

The Jets have always had this fascination with "news" and "notorieity". They share a stadium with a recent 2 time Super Bowl champion in the biggest media market in the country. They are attention whores (i.e. the reality TV show they did last year is a good indication) and this just fits their M.O. They can't beat the Giants and do what they do so why not top them in the front page market.

I feel bad for Tebow to have to be part of that dysfunctional organization with a clown for a coach. The last thing a hard working athlete needs. Even the Skins are that vapid.

Jack is Back!

::aren't::

Porchlight

Wow, narciso, I never knew that. I'm going to call it a 'mentirita' from now on too.

Rick Ballard

"How on earth can someone running for reelection survive his opponent having those documents?"

RSE,

If the propaganda model were working as advertised, it really wouldn't matter. Governor Etch will never bring it up but even if he did it would drop into the bottomless MFM pit and no one would ever hear it hit bottom.

I've never seen a propaganda effort on this scale in my life. Something similar may have occurred during the Presidencies of the other great progressive liars, Wilson and Roosevelt, but I wasn't around then. The dearth of OPM, alt-media and reality have the upper hand at the moment and none of those factors are moving in the propagandists favor.

Porchlight

I think Jacksonville would have been too comfortable for Tebow (not that he had a choice). He's headed staight to the lion's den.

NK

JiB-- been a Jet fan since '67-- this is embarassing for all concerned.

narciso

Well there is Bernays and the Creel Committee,
during World War One, and of course, Orwell modeled Minitrue, on his stint with the BBC.

Captain Hate

JiB, I've long thought that the reason Belichick declined to get promoted to the head coach of the Jets was that he thought (and probably had this confirmed by the Tuna) that the front office meddled too much and he remembered how badly Modell did the same in Cleveland and wanted no part of it. He probably got Kraft to agree to be hands off on everything including cheating.

I thought Mangini got torpedoed by those imbeciles when they forced Favre on him because I'm sure he wanted no part of #666 and his coach killing tendencies.

Jack is Back!

NK,

Bill Polian thinks the "s**t hits the fan" when they start pulling Sanchez with 3rd and 3 for a Tebow package:) I just don't think Fat Rex is smart enough to understand how to use Tebow but then Fox was a defense guy also and got away with it.

Who knows, maybe the Jets have a jump pass in their new play book.

BTW, just saw a tweet about how Rush has eviserated Obama over trying to take credit for the Keystone Cushing to Gulf extension. He noted, correctly, that Obama has no authority to approve or disapprove that pipeline. He only has Presidential Permission or Authority for International pipelines. I only hope someone like Romney or Santorum makes and issue of this and throw it right back at the JEF.

Why do I keep forgetting how dangerous Holdren has been? He certainly influenced my generation with his and Ehrlich's drivel which was delivered as "science."

"Overpopulation was an early concern and interest. In a 1969 article, Holdren and co-author Paul R. Ehrlich argued, "if the population control measures are not initiated immediately, and effectively, all the technology man can bring to bear will not fend off the misery to come." In 1973, Holdren encouraged a decline in fertility to well below replacement in the United States, because "210 million now is too many and 280 million in 2040 is likely to be much too many." In 1977, Paul R. Ehrlich, Anne H. Ehrlich, and Holdren co-authored the textbook Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment; they discussed the possible role of a wide variety of solutions to overpopulation, from voluntary family planning to enforced population controls, including forced sterilization for women after they gave birth to a designated number of children, and discussed "the use of milder methods of influencing family size preferences" such as access to birth control and abortion."(Wiki)

Note the call for the methods of Cass "Nudge, Nudge" Sunstein? Plus, the glories of Ecotopia are still required reading.(See Gmax at 12:12)

To paraphrase Ty Webb in Caddyshack, JiB, don't sell the Skin's short. They're terribly vapid.

Ok, I have to ask for help again regarding my leftist family, one of whom e-mailed a link to a NY Review of Books blog post entitled "Age of Ignorance." I won't link this garbage, the thesis of which essentially was that we're all a bunch of bitter clingers, but I excerpt this:

to the ignorant and the bigoted, lies always sound better than truth:

Christians are persecuted in this country.
The government is coming to get your guns.
Obama is a Muslim.
Global Warming is a hoax.
The president is forcing open homosexuality on the military.
Schools push a left-wing agenda.
Social Security is an entitlement, no different from welfare.
Obama hates white people.
The life on earth is 10,000 years old and so is the universe.
The safety net contributes to poverty.
The government is taking money from you and giving it to sex-crazed college women to pay for their birth control.

One could easily list many more such commonplace delusions believed by Americans. They are kept in circulation by hundreds of right-wing political and religious media outlets whose function is to fabricate an alternate reality for their viewers and their listeners. “Stupidity is sometimes the greatest of historical forces,” Sidney Hook said once. No doubt. What we have in this country is the rebellion of dull minds against the intellect. That’s why they love politicians who rail against teachers indoctrinating children against their parents’ values and resent the ones who show ability to think seriously and independently.

Of course, each of those 11 items is either actually true or a straw man, of course. I'd like to come up with a list of liberal idiocies that are verifiably false and not straw men, and are affirmative statements, not just restatements of the above.

1. The science is settled on (anthropogenic) global warming.

This fact check must have been set up in opposite land because it's beyond idiotic. As TM posits, when gas prices go up production may increase in response. But the reality is even worse: oil companies have projects sitting on the shelf that go from unprofitable to profitable with gas price increases. So at $1 a gallon ANWR might not be profitable (making it up) but at $2 it is. So with rising gas prices it is logical that drilling increases. AP has got the causality exactly backwards.

We expect the NY Times and the AP to get military ranks and procedures wrong because there's nobody in the newsroom that has any military experience beyond watching Deer Hunter and Kelly's Heroes. But this is basic math, basic economics. What do these people bring, exactly, to the table anyway? Besides high state morality that is.

Credible voices are all over the map. Land thermometers aren't.

Mel, it is intensively debated in the blogosphere whether adjustments made to historical temperature series have validity or not and if so what. Personally, I don't think the record is good enough to so analyse, and the record is not particularly suited to understanding climate anyway, which is way more than temperature.

ARGO, diving floats in the ocean, are the most reliable record in the greatest heat reservoir, but they've recorded only since 2003 and show slight cooling of the upper ocean.

It's my understanding that Tebow had a great deal to say about where he went, and the Jets were his preference.

Too bad. That fat loudmouth Ryan has lost control of that team, and Tebow is headed for a dysfunctional locker room.

Of all the wonderful things about the Giants' end of season and Super Bowl run, I think my favorite moment has to be Brandon Jacobs confronting Ryan after the G-men beat the Jets, and telling him "time to shut up, fat man."

You're aware.

NK @ 3:30 I agree, but ARGO is measuring much greater heat capacity. The temperature series being subject to historical adjustment have surface thermometer readings combining land and sea. Your satellite tropospheric temperature series are reliable.
