The Justice Departmnt and FBI have picked up the Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman case. Zimmerman can't be cleared before the election, so unless they can come up with convincing new evidence (audio wizardry on the 911 tapes?) this case goes into pre-election limbo.
I still think Zimmerman ought to be guilty of something, but under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" self defense law (aka "Shoot First"), the other party to their scuffle is dead and no other witnesses seem to contradict the self-defense alibi.
We get a new version of Zimmerman's story:
Zimmerman said he had stepped out of his truck to check the name of the street he was on when Trayvon attacked him from behind as he walked back to his truck, police said. He said he feared for his life and fired the semiautomatic handgun he was licensed to carry because he feared for his life.
The self-appointed self-important neighborhood watch captain wasn't sure what street he was on? Or was he just double-checking?
The police captain had offered this (possibly hypothetical) version of events last week:
“Mr. Zimmerman’s claim is that the confrontation was initiated by Trayvon,” Police Chief Bill Lee said in an interview. “I am not going into specifics of what led to the violent physical encounter witnessed by residents. All the physical evidence and testimony we have independent of what Mr. Zimmerman provides corroborates this claim to self-defense.”
To claim self-defense, someone has to show there was danger of great bodily harm or death, Lee said. “Zimmerman had injuries consistent with his story,” Lee said.
Zimmerman had a damp shirt, grass stains, a bloody nose and was bleeding from a wound in back of his head, according to police reports.
“If someone asks you, ‘Hey do you live here?’ is it OK for you to jump on them and beat the crap out of somebody?” Lee said. “It’s not.”
Since we have the "not going into specifics" disclaimer it is not clear that the bit about "If someone asks you..." is Zimmerman's actual alibi.
Or, I suppose, Zimmerman could have asked that question, turned around, and gotten jumped.
The Feds will sort this out. Either they clear Zimmerman next December or they indict him in October; there is no way they bring this to trial and risk an acquital or dismissal before the election.
CRT- some races are more critical than others. Like everything else the "truth" has to wait for Obama's reelection. PPACA, budget sequestration, Iran's bomb, Israel's reaction to Iran's bomb, F&F disclosure, and now the CRT racial hierarchy.

NPR just referred to Zimmerman as a Hispanic neighborhood watch leader. I guess NPR didn't get the "let's make Zimmerman the Great White Defendant" memo.
Clarice, do you think there is any basis for DOJ to intervene (other than catering to the constituency that Obama needs to go at least 95-5 in his favor). Of all the black on white and white on black and black on Asian and Hispanic on Irish and etcetera etcetera ad nauseam crime in the last month, what aspect of the actual facts of this case justifies DOJ sticking its nose in here?
Posted by: Thomas Collins | March 20, 2012 at 07:46 AM
Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to why the FBI is being called into a state matter. Did Florida request their assistance?
Posted by: William Teach | March 20, 2012 at 07:52 AM
Yeah, I was wondering that too. Why is this a Federal case?!
Posted by: qrstuv | March 20, 2012 at 07:54 AM
William Teach, I can only guess that DOJ is investigating whether this is some sort of hate crime in violation of federal statutes. But I think that is a pretext. Or perhaps looking at whether local police are discriminating against blacks in their policing conduct. In any event, if Hispanic activists push back, Axelplouffe might tell DOJ to back off.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | March 20, 2012 at 07:59 AM
The Miami Herald article mentions attorney referrint to a "botched" police investigation. I wonder what the evidence for that is. Rick Scott, the Governor of Florida, is offering resources. Perhaps it is a volatile situation in the Sanford community, and the Feds and Governor Scott are hoping investigations will give time for things to cool down.
In any event, this could be Stanley Fish's tribal politics taking the national stage.

I heard that too, TC. But then their next story was about how race and the health care debate, the subtext being that opposition to Obamacare (along with everything else) is racially motivated. How that squares with the fact that Obama was elected was not mentioned, at least not before I stopped listening.

Zimmerman's 911 Call.
As I have said, this is going to be a lot different at the end than it was in the beginning. Lots of information out there that has not come to light - yet!
There may be more than one or two 911 calls from Zimmerman. And Trayvon was acting suspiciously not that that is a crime or even illegal but could be a precursor to a crime or crimes committed before.

CH, et. al.
If you read the Sentinel and watch the local Orlando news channels this is already gone beyone a criminal investigation to a political canard and "crisis to take advantage of".
Also, they are already going after the "guns" by saying "I told you so" about the expansion of the Stand Your Ground legislation in 2005 (wasn't that under Charlie Crist's watch?). The anti-gun crowd is now working with the NAACP and the local progs to take this away from Sanford Police and Seminole county DA and make it something other than what it is.
Now, obviously, Zimmerman is a little bit of wannabe. He has made close to 50 calls to 911 since 2009 in his role as neighborhood watchdog. He is also a Hispanic and there is a divide in Sanford (which is what we call a mixed area) between the local blacks and hispanics. This could end up backfiring by pitting blacks against hispanics - not something you want in an election year if you are the Dems.
More to come.

There are few things I dislike more than racial politics and racial justice. It's an inevitable part of life (like debt and taxes), so I guess my hope is that a fair investigation will determine why an unarmed teenager was killed. Beyond that, I'll hold my nose at the stink caused by racialist politicians. In the meantime, below is a daily headline link from the Wash Ex that shows why 'Bam is doomed; 'Bam's 3+ year debt higher than Bush's 8 year; gas all time March high, Ryan Budget goes precisely the right way. For all of you conservative fatalists, look at the young conservatives out there-- smart, attractive and committed conservatives-- Ryan, Rubio, Col West, Palin, Walker etc-- if 2012 goes the right way, the conservative future is very bright, and we may just avoid national bankruptcy: http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/morning-examiner-ryan-leads-where-obama-fails/436276

In the last thread someone was talking about how unpopular Romney is.
I think a closer examination will show that is a media narrative.
I've been asked to moderate a republican fundraiser involving a local Fox news political commentator and a former US Rep. I emailed them to see what they want to talk about. The commenter said he wanted to talk about how the media has created the narrative that Romney is underperforming despite his steady march to the nomination.

From OT's link:
" So what is the problem? Well, considering that the authority of the DPA has never been meaningfully exercised, and that the pre-emption of authority claimed by the Clinton-era EO 12919 has been similarly dormant, why would the Obama administration choose this particular time to update an obscure and unused authority? It is this question many believe must be asked and answered, and sooner rather than later.
In an attempt to provide that answer, allow me to don an appropriately stylish tinfoil hat before I present a plausible scenario."
And:
" Now (as I adjust my tinfoil hat to a jauntier angle),let me tie these points together."
Oh Joy! Another concerned reporter that qualifies this as a "tin foil" concern. Why report on it at all then?
Now he never says he took the hat off, so what do I make of his conclusion?
" The timing of this executive order is jarring, even if the specific changes to the order are not. The power it conveys is staggering and cannot be safely entrusted to a single branch of government, much less to a single man. The Congress needs to reassert control over the exercise and implementation of the Defense Production Act before it can be utilized by a power-hungry cabal of leftists eager to fundamentally transform America. There is a door no one has locked, and our home is not secure. Close the door, lock it, and throw away that key."

Charlie Gasparino tells the tale of a prominent CEO climbing off the Obama train:
Back when he agreed to advise the Obama administration on economics, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt told friends that he thought it would be good for GE and good for the country. A life-long Republican, Immelt said he believed he could at the very least moderate the president’s distinctly anti-business instincts.
That was three years ago; these days Immelt is telling friends something quite different.
Sure, GE has managed to feast on federal subsidies, particularly the “green-energy” giveaways that are Obamanomics’ hallmark.
But Immelt doesn’t think he’s had anywhere near as much luck moderating the president’s fat-cat-bashing, left-leaning economic agenda of taxing businesses and entrepreneurs to pay for government bloat.
WHOOPS. Who is the rube now?
Posted by: GMAX | March 20, 2012 at 10:21 AM
Because, of course the stuff is different. There are butlers walking around, you know? We didn't have that, you know. So, Barack and I really do work hard to, you know, figure out how you create those values in this other world that we know nothing about and we, you know, try to make sure the kids have chores to do.
You know, if someone else talked, you know, like the FLOTUS, there would, you know, be questions about her, you know, intelligence, you know?
Posted by: Sue | March 20, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Immelt figured -- rightly-- that 'Bam would deliver Billions to GE wind power subsidies-- he did-- and that 'Bam's anti-business crony capitalism would hurt small business more than mega-corps -- it did-- and that wold be good for GE shareholders. Well, Immelt has realized that 'Bam is SO Bad-- it jeopardizes GE's profits. So.... 'Bam must go!!

Am I the only one that thinks it odd a 13 year old gets a spring break...to anywhere...without her parents?

I'm sure that if Jimmy Hoffa or Judge Crater showed up tomorrow, we would have a much better chance to clearing up than we will ever have in the Martin/Zimmerman case.

The house voted on March 21, 2010, to pass Obamacare. As Janet noted. I have no effin' idea what ABC News Radio was referring to. Maybe I missed something.

Vatican money laundering?
That's what they said.
I'm feeling better about the election this week. Of course that could all change tomorrow, but I keep hearing from people determined to vote against Obama - people who didn't vote last time, immigrants, the gas station attendant and on and on.

Narc-- the Ryan Plan chart from Greek Hero Pethokoukis is a winner with INDY voters. Why-- it doesn't touch current retirees, it doesn't touch Soc Sec, it simplifies taxes. 3 winners for Indy voters PLUS that chart shows why Bam leads to national bankruptcy. 35% of voters will hate Ryan-- 55% will love him. This is a political winner.

Re Ignatz's 10:49 AM post: What evidence has come to light to indicate that Zimmerman should be guilty of anything? Any Floridian who doesn't like Florida's no retreat law can work through the legislative process to change it. However, even without a no retreat law, Zimmerman wouldn't necessarily have been guilty of anything unless, as Ignatz notes, we prefer a society with laws elastic enough to criminalize the actions of people we think should be guilty of something.

The WH website says Obama signed it on March 23, 2010. So...
You're right, Sue...The 20th the Tea Party was slandered...the 21st the House passed it...the 23rd President 404 signed it. It was a week of crap. I just liked the term, Melancholy Dependence Day (from a JOMer).

I think it is funny when they show a picture of the white man. They so desperately want him to be white they think they can erase the fact that one of his parents is Hispanic. So, let's start calling Obama a white man.

Sue-
Correct on both items.

Sue, I am certain there are teachers with them and that it is considered a field trip not "spring break". As I keep telling you that's a common practice in private schools here.

I hit post before I finished my thought.
So, let's start calling Obama a white man. That way, apolitical voters desperately want[ing] to avoid concluding that the first African-American president of the United States is a failure can just say the white man failed.

This is the first time I've seen you say anything about it. Anyway, I still find it odd.
