First? Well, then, it's never too early to say GTHC.

Chubby

((...in a less incendiary fashion))

tell me why "lipstick on a pig" was not incendiary

Agent J

As I posted last night on FB..When you can get a prescription of Birth Control pills filled at Wal-Mart for under $10 a mounth, that leaves a lot of money for condoms..maybe she should study more!

Danube of Thought

I thought Rush's comments were stupid and misdirected. He has blown this one badly.

Extraneus

But the language is over the top and not helpful to his larger point, however helpful it may be to Rush's personal goals. He's putting himself ahead of the team here.

I disagree. I think Rush's framing of an otherwise boring subject has clued a lot of otherwise uninformed people into the social redistribution aspects of insurance mandates and associated liberal policies.

By questioning the amount of sex involved in requiring rich hot law-school nymphos to either spend $1000/yr on condoms or get subsidized by the rest of us, he allows average voters to think over what they wouldn't otherwise even consider.

Agent J

qrstuv

Well, I want Rush to apologize for insulting the woman...

Right after Obama apologizes for calling a large part of the country "bitter clingers" -- and the numerous other insults he has offered us over the years.

Fred Beloit

Just one minute. This woman testified that she gets screwed frequently, and so frequently [this condition used to be covered by a special term, nymphomaniac] that she wants the rest of us to pay for means to prevent her from becoming pregnant. And you are asking who paid for her undergrad sex materials?

Oh sorry, you're a don't ask don't tell blog. It is Rush who is the inappropriate one.

I've seen road apples before, but I would never have expected such a huge pile on this blog.

BumperStickerist

Hang on -

my understanding is that the cost of birth control options such as pills and IUDs is fixed.

Therefore Rush should be applauding Fluke for lowering her "cost per act".

.

Janet

I don't want anyone to apologize. I agree with Extraneus. Rush takes the heat & serves up a big MFM platform & the Republicans do what..........distance themselves from Rush.
He gave them center stage to make their points...& they blow it. :(

qrstuv

A woman who 1) claims that birth control costs $1000/year, and 2) thinks someone other than the consumer should pay for it deserves every last piece of excoriation she gets.

Chubby

qrstuv

for some reason I thought the number she used was $3000

boris

"over the top and not helpful to his larger point"

I deplore such shortsighted thinking.

It is not always possible to crystalize an issue with calm measured dignified ridicule. Sometimes the simple slur is much more effective.

In context is was a simple point ... if she wants other people to chip in to pay the expenses of her apparently marathon sex life what does that make her?

Rush didn't shout at her like ... Jane you ignorant slut!

Don't remember that causing a big fuss. In context an obvious joke but in print one could have made it seem like a nasty insult.

MarkO

On the merits, Rush may be right; on the message, he's given the left an opening and taken the spotlight off Obama. I don't think we have that luxury.

When the leader of the free world calls a poor, naughty girl to comfort her, you know this is just more of the trap sprung by Geo Shankapotomus, jumped in by Rick S., and wonderfully employed by someone with more brains than we seem to have on our side.

centralcal

Chubby, I think $3000 was for her whole time at college. Or something.

centralcal

I dunno, MarkO. I think Obama made the bigger mistake than Rush did. Calling Ms. Nympho to sympathize with her started a whole slew of "Did Obama call (insert any of many names here) when...?

BumperStickerist

Part of me wants to bring Arlen Specter out of retirement to do a good ol' fashioned timeline.

Ms. Fluke - you're attending a Catholic law school? Is that correct?

and you are attending as a 3rd year law student?

At a Catholic University?

And, per your testimony, 40% of the women attending law school pay in excess of $1,000 per year for birth control?

And, per your study, that $1,000 represents an amount of money that would drive them to bankruptcy?

Are you familiar with the legal concept of "discretionary spending?"

So, $85 per month represents a make-or-break amount?

And, these women, they consider birth control to be important?

More important than other voluntary activities?

... what were the criteria for your study?

Did you verify the women's reports?

Did they share their tax information?

and so forth....

-

If this a serious issue, then - okay - let's treat it seriously.

boris

"he's given the left an opening and taken the spotlight off Obama"

The proper response to left and right ninnies who recoil in horror at the word "slut" is ...

Give Me A Fucking Break
Thomas Collins

It's more than energy. Coffee is necessary for my mental health. By the logic of Pelosi and Boxer and Murray and Warren and Fluke, by not supporting requiring health plans to provide bags of coffee, grinders (for those who prefer whole bean), gift cards to Starbucks and other coffee establishments, coffee machines at work, and spoons, cups and saucers, those nasty conservatives are denying us our right to mental health treatment!

BumperStickerist

and then we can reach a good old fashioned Scottish verdict:

Not proven

centralcal

Besides. I thought liberal women were proud of their slut-i-ness. They sure were when they were having "Slut Walks" not too long ago.

Thomas Collins

I recognize that in NYC, free sugar for those who like some in their coffee will not be included in the coffee mandated coverage package. However, I understand from reliable sources that Mayor Bloomberg may alllow 2 percent milk as well as skim milk to be part of the mandate.

MarkO

I don't recoil at the word "slut." I actually think it might have some power as a shorthand ridicule of the good Sister Fluke. But, to what end? Discussing a violation of the First Amendment? Hardly. It's a recapitulation of a fight over birth control long settled. It's over.

I do wonder why we are swimming in a conraceptive morass instead of slamming Obama about jobs and national security. This election will not be won on the issue of contraception. Moreover, it is to Obama's advantage to frame the GOP as opposed to it. He's done it. Rush helped.

Chubby

it's very confusing, do they want big government in or out of the bedrooms of the nation?

Ignatz

I have yet to see one of these Rush imbroglios turn out the way the Doom!-sayers think it will.
It may put the spotlight on Rush, but thank God it does, because he then uses that spotlight quite effectively.

boris

"I do wonder why we are swimming in a conraceptive morass instead of slamming Obama about jobs and national security"

Because Pelosi thinks a provocative social issue will help the dimorats?

One way she's apparently right is how it sends bloggers like Althouse running for cover.

Chubby

((This election will not be won on the issue of contraception.))

from what I've read, Obama has lost a lot of women voters, and this is what he's doing to get them back, so perhaps the election will indeed be won or lost for Obama on this issue

BB Key

Has anyone seen a complete bio on Sandra Fluke, the law student ?

MarkO

I hope I’m the delusional one.

Chubby

Rush is evidently counting on the common sense of politically non-aligned women who voted for Obama last time. He thinks they too will scoff at the feminists' costly demands and not give their vote to Obama

Ben Franklin

Romney finally piped up about Limbaugh's mouth.

"I would have used different words, but now I wanna talk about jobs"

This statement of course is preceded by the headline;

*GOP rabbit punch followed by quick Tap-Out.....*

Comparing this teapot tempest with the coverage of Joe the Plumber (who did NOT testify to Congress, merely asked a question in public) is enlightening.

I'm not saying it's doom for Rush by any means, but I do note that four or five sponsors have withdrawn their sponsorship.

Nothing the woman said warranted the term "slut," and nothing she said suggested that she was promiscuous.

The response invited by her testimony was "why should an 'insurance' plan cover an event which is certain to occur? And if you can't afford it, what makes you think others can or should pay for it?"

I see it as a perfect example of self-centered, me-first rent-seeking, not an issue of sexual behavior.

The actual statement Rush made ...

“What does it say about the college co-ed Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.
If DoT finds it appropriate to quibble that the issue is not sexual behavior then the statement is clearly not calling her anything. Just asking a question ... right?

Besides, prostitute seems to include the notion of "rent seeking" one would think.

Chubby

((I see it as a perfect example of self-centered, me-first rent-seeking, not an issue of sexual behavior))

when has rational and tempered argument against the left's me-firstism ever worked in the past? if it did, today's problems wouldn't exist

Ignatz

--The response invited by her testimony was "why should an 'insurance' plan cover an event which is certain to occur? And if you can't afford it, what makes you think others can or should pay for it?"--

And Rush asked why he should be asked to pay for the contraceptives of a slut.
If history follows its usual pattern that's what the message left with people will be.
And it will only have been placed there by his hyperbole.
Had he phrased it benignly we would be talking about how many cars Chrysler sold last month.

Threadkiller

Can't Rush just say he misspoke? Is is the "get out jail free" card of the left.

Ben Franklin

" Just asking a question ... right?"

A rhetorical question is merely a device for making your own point.

He did not require an answer, since he gave the punch line, himself.

The generation who will vote for the first time in this Presidential election or at least be able to only hears "conservative" and "called a female law student a slut for wanting birth control".

Rush's cleverness and word play created a problemmatic sound byte for low message voters.

The legitimate "we all lose if personal living expenses can just be foisted on someone else" focus is lost to that age group.

And that's an important message for that group to master as they already have been trained to believe things should be "free".

And as Melinda ably noted, that's believing in the impossible. Not free just shifted impoverishes us all.

Ben Franklin

Gus

Seriously I don't understand what is so hard about this issue.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO AUTHORITY TO GIVE AWAY A BUSINESSES PRODUCT.

Insurance companies are compensated for their product no different than Obama is compensated for his (Bill Ayers) tripe books.

It's that simple. Rush didn't get it wrong at all, he has gotten the issue scrutinized better than anyone else did or would.

AliceH

Even more irksome to me than the left's outrage, and the right's agonizing that this time for sure Rush crossed the line, is the (no doubt unintentional) snobbery about this all "helping Obama" and that it's "a distraction" and that we should not talk about anything but jobs/economy.

I want to respect the opinion, and I most certainly respect the sincerity and intention, but I have to say it's bogus.

If the election could be won on only jobs/economy, we'd have already won it. THOSE facts are all out there, and they've been out there for years. How much more pursuading power do you think there is in that?

Note - I'm NOT suggesting dropping the topics of jobs/economy, but we're in "maintain pressure" mode, we're not building pressure. To build pressure requires adding fuel - and even though many seem to think contraception mandates are meaningless or counterproductive, I say with enormous confidence that my (Dixie Dem) county, which gave Obama a majority and which seemed likely to do so again because we're all poor here (26% in poverty, 24% work are government employees) are really shaken up by this.

The counterargument that this is turning people away ... who is that? Who are you referring to? Yourself? No - your vote isn't changing. You know people on the fence that were leaning Repub that are not leaning Dem AND are actually going to vote?

I don't buy it. The media is making things up - don't let them get away with it, confront.

"when has rational and tempered argument against the left's me-firstism ever worked in the past?"

Chubby,

I won't say it's the result of rational and tempered argument but the decisions by Olympia Snowe and Norman Dicks to spend more quality time away from DC amounted to the most significant stories of the week. They were also strong evidence that the maintrickle is simply not having any impact on the consensus view of the muddle that oligarchs must go.

Norm Dicks had a very powerful position and Olympia Snowe had a seemingly rock solid sinecure established upon the basis of being a very reliable squish. My bet is that their private polling results had the same "there is no path from here to there" quality as the President's.

We won't be reading about it in the maintrickle though. We'll just have to rely upon our lying eyes.

Janet

AliceH - good question.

How many people are out there who were going to vote Republican and because Rush Limbaugh suggested a liberal activist is a slut, now are definitively going to vote for Obama?

Really, how many people?

Jane

I hate to show my age, particularly today, but when did having sex become a right? The left is pushing the meme that no one take responsibility for having sex. So is rape now a right too? after all it is so important that college students have sex, (and high school kids, and junior high school kids) have sex that we have to pay for it. Well what about the kids who want to have sex but can't find anyone to have it with? What about their rights?

Danube of Thought

prostitute seems to include the notion of "rent seeking" one would think.

No. The prostitute provides a service in return for compensation. The rent-seeker seeks a share of what someone else has earned, with making any contribution.

MarkO

This contraception trap is in the nature of the classic described as “the tar baby” in American folklore. It has analogues in other myths, particularly one about the young Buddha, who encounters an ogre known as Sticky-hair (According to my Joseph Campbell “Hero with a Thousand Faces”). The lessons of these myths are many, but clearly they teach that when one is trapped, it does no good to continue to flail until one is further ensnared. The only way out is to let go.

Danube of Thought

He usually finds a way to make the other side hurt worse.

His stupid remark about Donovan McNabb got him fired. (Rush, not McNabb.)

Pasadena Phil

While the "polite society" that insists on policing the dull and ineffective "conservative" blogosphere "private debate club" tut-tuts Rush for being rude, Rush takes the issue by the throat and brings it to the fore.

A couple of days ago, everyone across the political spectrum was eulogizing Breitbart with Republican and conservative pundits and bloggers calling for "an army of Breitbarts" to serve as his legacy. Okay then! Where is that army? Apparently his legacy will be buried with him. Talk is cheap and that is all most of the conservative blogosphere ever offers.

Breitbart was an "in your face" "go to hell" fighter who got his facts straight, pushed ahead relentlessly and gloried in being attacked viciously by the left. It's how he defined victory. Why is Rush being universally attacked for doing the same thing?

Too much of the "conservative" blogosphere is like Obama, quick to apologize to the enemy for faux offenses. If the truth is offensive, so be it. It's called shaming the shameful.

Good for you Rush. Keep at it. The "army of Breitbarts" so far consists of one. Breitbart will become like Reagan in that everyone will claim to be embracing his legacy while doing the exact opposite. The "Breitbart Rule" will soon be added to "the Reagan Rule", the Goldwater Rule" and the rest of the RINO rules that are used to silence conservatives but never seem to apply to RINOs.

We didn't storm the beaches of Normandy looking over our shoulders for the police ready to blow the whistle on our "rudeness". If this is the most important election ever, we need to see more rudeness and hear more "go to hell" reactions every time the left demands an apology for another faux outrage. That "go to hell" attitude is what defined Breitbart. We should embrace it rather than be such saps in apologizing on demand. Being a movement conservative is about doing, not talking.

I ask again. How many people are changing their votes from R to D because of what Rush said?

Chubby

((What about their rights?))

I've often wondered that exact same thing about the "right" to marry (instead of it being a privilege). If someone can't find a spouse, can they demand one be provided by the state because their right is being violated? :) then again, if they cloned A. Wiener as the entitlement package, a lot of women would forfeit their right.

Porchlight

What Pasadena Phil said.

Breitbart would never in a million years have ceded ground to the handwringers over this.

Danube of Thought

Nonsense. She essentially says no such thing. She is not asking for payment in return for sex. She is asking for others to bear the cost of her contraception.

What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.

I say that that is not simply asking a question, it is asking it and answering it. And the answer is incorrect.

Gotta tell you that women ranging from 20 somethings like my daughters to my wife and her friends, none of whom care for Rush at all, think he was dead right in raising that girl to ridicule. They were shocked that some people really think we should pay for other people to have sex and are brazen enough to go on TV demanding it. I welcomed them to the reality of the sense of entitlement that is ruining our country, and asked them where they have been while this was happening.

This is the same sort of focusing issue that reveals the rot much as the House Bank scandal was a generation ago.

Danube of Thought

jane-As you might imagine this triggered quite an interesting discussion with read last night. She told me that her high school clinic refused to provide condoms for students but that it was the norm elsewhere. I don't know when I have been more shocked but that her classmates honestly thought the high school should provide condoms on request.

So we have that generation, not everybody but far more widespread than I would ever have guessed, that accepts promiscuous sex as a matter of fact. And thinks someone should provide free means for avoiding pregnancies.

No good will come of this indeed.

Mark was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.

Mark took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" Mark asked.

"No, I don't waste time fishing," the homeless man said. "I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on decoys for duck hunting instead of food?" Mark asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't hunted in 20 years!"

"Well," said Mark, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife, Karen."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?

Mark replied, "That's okay. It's important for Karen to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking, fishing and hunting."

He served it up on a silver platter and the Reps were too timid to realize it.

Amen, OL!!!

The Kaiser poll was done March 1----

narciso

They are creating an incentive system, a nudge
in Susstein's words, for the behavior they want, just like with other aspects, they discourage the behavior they don't want, whether marriage or energy production

" Well what about the kids who want to have sex but can't find anyone to have it with? What about their rights?"

I think I may have a civil rights case here for you Jane.

Rocco

$1000.00 buys 62, 36 count boxes of Trojans at Target at $16.00 per box. That's 2,232 condoms. She's having sex 6 times a day and 7 on weekends, twelve months a year! When does she find time to study?

The Kaiser poll was done March

Sigh. I half expected you'd come back w/ that.

The stories about the poll were published March 1. The survey they are reporting on was conducted between Feb 13-18.

This is a common occurence, and another demonstration of why it matters HOW the media selects what information to include/exclude. The stories did not provide a link to the Kaiser poll itself, nor did they include currency of the data. Why didn't they? I had to google around to find it, but I did find it - LUN

Even Kaiser dates the story as Mar 1, and relegates the not insignificant fact that the data is weeks old to the last paragraph.

squaredance

More moral confusion, and self-important and cowardly mincing out of the "Creek of Obtuseness" and his amen corner I see.

Here is a hint: That is not a river, and the fluid within it is not water. Best that yonder you go a have a look, or rather, a sniff. It is quite another substance altogether.

Rush was right. If the so-called "Catholic Law school" had any stones they would dismiss her at once. Once upon a time when they were actually a Catholic institution with a Catholic mission they would have done so.

To hold that abortion is an assertion of "freedom" is to depart completely from any considered and civilized notions of what "rights" and "freedoms" actually are. One expects, one demands better from an institution such as Georgetown.

Georgetown should be ashamed of itself. All Catholics should be up in arms at its behavior, and the perverted and warped goals that Georgetown has set before itself.

RL in fact did not go far enough in his characterization. She properly should be additionally denounced as a liar, a hypocrite, an opportunist, an apostate and a political operative. She is also a spoiled brat. She is hideous to behold--the very face of feminism.

The sheer decadence of it: A randy, addled, dishonest, self-adsorbed, self-indulged feminist nincompoop and would be "Lawyer" flouting her sexual immorality--and that is just what it is, sexual immorality--as somehow some mantle of high moral conduct, a conduct which is "threatened" by the very idea that she should at the very least bear the cost of it herself.

On top of this she wittingly or unwittingly is being used as a pawn to distract "the people" from the brutal assault on their pocket books, moral and social beliefs, faith, liberties, institutions and their very civilization by the most vile and traitorous people in the nation.

That this person was even brought before the congress to engage in this gross and degrading agi-prop shows how immoral this country and its federal legislature have become. That the POTUS felt it politically expedient and desirable to call her up and commiserate with her shows that we as a nation are not just degraded and confused but wildly morally depraved. Can you imagine this sort of spewing out of a Georgetown student even 30 years ago?

That pipsqueaks like DoT think that this enables them to indulge in such bizarrely self-important behavior as deploring someone like Rush, who is after all telling the truth, shows just how mindlessly unexamined are the "beliefs" of some of the so called "conservatives" on JOM.

It is bizarre and, in the end, morally corrupt to assert that by stating the truth we "open ourselves up to attacks" and therefore we should deplore and despise those who would state the truth. Of course, the whole point of this sort of nonsense is to blunt opposition by having them think twice about uttering what is obviously and simply true. If telling the truth is "assaulting the freedom of women", then, by all means, let the assaults begin. If we lose the election because of it, then there is little left of value to honorably win.

America is never served by the suppression of truth in the face of Marxist and Democrat propaganda, agi-prop and direct action political fronts and machines. No, not ever served. It does not matter what parts these all hail from, and that includes Georgetown University, The Congress or that pack of narcissistic, spoiled and lecherous brats we call "feminists".

To the contrary, to even suggest such a notion is harmful to America, but in the loony, upside down pea-brained world of people like DoT this sort on nonsense is seen as the most shrewd and insightful political sagacity.

We are in the pickle we are in just because of the sniveling cowardice and moral confusion of people like DoT.

I do suspect. however, that both his anguish and the purported reasons for it are all dodges and lies.

DoT just does not like Rush because he has done something other with his life than gaze at his navel and then congratulate himself for it. Rush actually stands for something other than the self-flattery narcissists suck on in their dark corners.

DoT (and his fellow travelers) should be ashamed, but the very notion of it is beyond him. To truly know shame one has to know God, and in the inferiority of his incredulity DoT here too thinks he is superior. Too funny.

It is all of a piece. He should really be a Democrat, and no doubt if he could find a way to get on their gravy train would be one.

These are altogether the squalid furnishings of a shallow and immature mind.

"Even Kaiser dates the story as Mar 1"

So they buried the lede? I guess they will make some commission off the top.
