What phrase describes making something dreadful appear even worse than it already is? If it comes to me, I will be sure to apply it to this article by Kim Murphy of the LA Times.
Let's back up a bit. A Bush-appointed Federal judge in Montana showed terrible judgment and a deplorable sense of humor in forwarding an email from his brother mocking Barack Obama. Here is the Great Falls Tribune for some facts before we see how they were mangled in LA:
HELENA — Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull on Wednesday admitted to sending a racially charged email about President Barack Obama from his courthouse chambers.
Cebull, of Billings, was nominated by former President George W. Bush and received his commission in 2001 and has served as chief judge for the District of Montana since 2008.
The subject line of the email, which Cebull sent from his official courthouse email address on Feb. 20 at 3:42 p.m., reads: "A MOM'S MEMORY."
The forwarded text reads as follow:
"Normally I don't send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine.
"A little boy said to his mother; 'Mommy, how come I'm black and you're white?'" the email joke reads. "His mother replied, 'Don't even go there Barack! From what I can remember about that party, you're lucky you don't bark!'"
Har de har.
But let's see how the LA Times mangled that:
Montana’s chief federal judge Wednesday admitted forwarding an email to friends about President Obama that appears to equate African Americans with dogs and raises questions about the president’s mixed racial ancestry.
“Normally I don’t send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine,” Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull wrote before forwarding the email, a copy of which was obtained by the Los Angeles Times.
No, he didn't write that "touches your heart" intro - it was part of the set-up for the joke and was forwarded with the rest. Lest you doubt, here are some Barack-free versions of the joke (from around 2009) with a similar set-up:
A Mother's Beautiful Story
Enjoy this story, I hope it touches your heart like it did mine. This is so beautiful;
A little boy says to his mother, "Mommy, how come I'm black and you're white?" His mother replied, "Don't even go there! From what I can remember about
that fucking party, you're lucky you don't bark!"
Or here:
Normally I don't send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching.
Hope it touches your heart like it did mine
This is so beautiful...
And the payoff.
As to whether the joke is racially charged and equates black men to dogs, well, this version mentioned Barack and was sent by a Republican, so the judge had to know his critics would take it there.
However, Barack-free versions of this joke are all over the internet. I very much doubt that it was intended to have racist connotations here, here, here, here or here. I daresay the butt of the joke is the sexually adventurous white mother. Of course, making it a joke about Barack makes it a joke about his mother and why does someone want to be making jokes about other people's moms?
Well. Robert Barnes of the WaPo avoids the hysteria of the LA Times:
According to the Tribune, the subject line of the e-mail Cebull sent from his official courthouse e-mail address on Feb. 20 at 3:42 p.m., reads: “A MOM’S MEMORY.”
The forwarded text reads:
“Normally I don’t send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine.
We are reassured that it is possible to report this story accurately. However, I expect that by tomorrow Rachel Maddow or some media biggie of that ideological ilk will be claiming that the judge told the joke on YouTube. In blackface.
I CAN QUIT ANYTIME (AND SOONER WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER)
You might miss these in all the links above. First, I don't know how they happened to pick on Asians here:
A young Chinese girl going on her 1st date. Her mother warned her….”1st he kisses your cheek; then he’ll kiss your breasts, you’ll enjoy; than he want to go on top. You must not allow it so as not to disgrace our family name”.
Next day girl told Mom, “Everything happen exactly as you predicted. I didn’t allow him to go on top so I went on top and disgraced his family”.
And join me in deploring this ageism and bestiality:
An old man was sitting on a bench at the mall. A teenager sat down next to him. He had spiked hair that was red, orange, yellow, green, blue & violet. The old man stared.
Whenever the teen looked, the old man was staring.
Finally, the teenager said sarcastically : "What's the matter, old boy, never done anything wild in your life?" Without missing a beat the old man replied :" Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock. Just wondering if you were my son."
Treating him like a dog...

--I daresay the butt of the joke is the sexually adventurous white mother.--
Obviously. One either has to conclude the reporterette is either a closet racist herself or intentionally making a connection that is pretty clearly not there.
And I no doubt am demonstrating my questionable taste when I say I thought all those jokes were moderately funny.

See, in order to equate black men and dogs, you have to make the joke so incomprehensible it may as well be German.
Posted by: bgates | March 01, 2012 at 04:47 PM
Seems pretty innocent, and funnier, to add Barack to what was already a decent joke - which wasn't the judge's doing anyway.
The judge does look like a jokester, though.

Little Johnny waited for his mom to pick him up from school but she never showed.
It was a long walk home and Johnny arrived very tired. He walked into the house calling “mom, mom!” to no reply.
He finally walked upstairs, after hearing some noise from his mother’s room. He peeked in and saw his mom lying on the bed. She was completely naked. She lay there rubbing herself, her hands running from her breasts down to her crotch, moaning “God I need a man. God I need a man!!”
Little Johnny was scared. He ran to his room, closed his door, hopped in his bed, and cried.
He did not tell his mom what he saw.
The next day, the same thing happened. His mom did not get him from school, he made the long walk home, and arrived very tired. “Mom, mom”, he said to no reply.
Johnny headed upstairs and peeked into his mom’s room. Again, she lay naked, rubbing herself, moaning “God I need a man, God I need a man!”
Johnny ran even faster to his room, closed his door, hopped in his bed and cried.
The next day was the same. His mom did not pick him up; he walked home, and was exhausted.
This time he did not call to his mom. Instead, he went to her room to confront her.
When he opened the door what he saw was quite a shock. On top of his naked mom was the biggest nakedest black man he had ever seen. He was doing things to his mom that Johnny had never seen or heard of before.
Johnny ran to his room, faster than ever before. He slammed the door! He hopped into the bed, took off his clothes, started rubbing himself, saying “God I need a bicycle! God I need a bicycle!!”

Democrats Continue to Close Ranks
Per Rasmussen
They tightened up by 262,500 this month. Total Democrat rank closing since the 2008 election stands at 11,682,000. BOzo's margin was 9,522,00 in 2008.
OTOH - Republicans were forced to open ranks to make room for an additional 131,257 folks, raising the total to 2,887,661 since McCain tossed in the towel.

I'm still working out the horrific impact of this incredibly divisive primary season upon partisan identification. Would the +6% GOP edge since September have been +10% without it? Would the Democrats have lost more than 4% if we could all just get along?
RAS has buried the historical trend on Partisan ID for over six months now. Gallup swapped their top bar to a side bar. It's almost as if both can hear Don Meridith singing Turn Out the Lights from the great beyond.

What's left to say? That nobody "needs" birth control, never mind "access" to it, which everyone including kids have? It's not a medical necessity, or even a medical issue.
Nobody "needs" to have sex, and anyone can get condoms for free.
If this is the stand they're taking in order to usher in socialized medicine, they're obviously playing a pretty weak hand.
Why not whine about access to acupuncture, podiatry, chiropractic, hypnotism or massage therapy? Oh wait, those are probably already mandated.

Listen just doing the math, if there are 3.6% more Republicans than Democrats and about 31.6% of the voters are independents, if you just assume all Republicans and all Democrats vote their party, the Republican could lose 55% of indys and still have a narrow victory.
Now consider that most polls show more Democrat defectors than Republican crossovers and nearly every indy poll has been close to 60/40 against the Democrats and you can see why I see no path to reelection for Zero. Shame really.

About the released hostages and the ransom etc, Lindsay just said:
"that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt bears watching, they've got a pretty radical past, but they distanced themselves from this prosecution. They said the NGO Law that they (the Americans) were being prosecuted under was unfair and unjust and they wanted to change it, that's a little bit encouraging."
Just passing Lindsay's insight along in case any of you guys were worried about the Muslim Brotherhood.

"BTW, does "free birth control" include condoms?"
I am guessing it is the only way you can get the cost to be significant.
A diaphragm or IUD is a one time cost, even birth control pills are no more than one per day.
If you assume rampant sex and expensive condoms you can get the price tag up to where people don't laugh in your face when you claim a financial hardship.

I’ve always had great respect for the field of ethics that is grounded in the works of Thomas Aquinas and Thomas More, but I must say the James Garvey piece in the UK’s Guardian newspaper on “Peter Gleick lied, but was it justified by the wider good?” lowers the bar considerably.
What always seem to punctuate these sort of discussions is that in a field, such as climate science, which, much like religion, is filled with so many known unknowns, clarity can only be achieved through “belief.”
Instead of a clear headed view of ethics, Garvey acts like a “religious minister for hire,” selling his services to the presumably highest bidder, which I guess in this case is to whomever issues the largest government research grants or probably more correct .. the Church of Climate Science. Had this been a discussion of the ethics of WWII, his logic would work for equally for both the “Axis” or the “Allies.” What is missing is the discussion of why the Church of Climate Science is in “the right.” That it is the "wider good."
Unfortunately for the Church of Climate Science, which unlike the Roman Church which has had two millenia to wander in the wilderness and hone it’s ethical “beliefs,” climate science is a new “belief system” which will have it’s share of saints, sinners and more than a few persecuted Galileo-types. Eventually, even Garvey may come to realize that even the “beliefs” of Climate Science will and should encounter campaigns against teaching it in schools, especially when the “science” hasn’t held up to critical review.
But currently, he rallies with much the same line as Medieval crusaders that “God is on my side” with the familiar twist that “science is on my side” even when it no longer holds true. When the cracks in it's foundation have been replaced with mere “belief.”
For science has no moral clarity. It's clarity comes only from the last test of it's hypothesis.
Let us hope that the science isn’t blotted out by the religion.

Well said Neo.
Reading the comments at your link it is disturbing to see how many of the AGW partisans excuse Gleick's behavior because the ends justify the means. Anything is permitted when one is acting for the greater good.
These folks are but a couple demagogues away from entering the mental territory of Final Solution's.

Reading Sibelius's comments today about how much money would be saved by the Taxpayer funding of contraceptives, caused me to think of how much poorer this world would have been if there had been no adopted Andrew Breitbart and no adopted Steve Jobs.
I don't know enough about Steve Jobs, but it is obvious that he improved the life of virtually every human on this planet. From observations today, it is also obvious that Breitbart positively affected millions by courageously contributing to keeping this nation the last best hope on planet earth.
If only their birth parents had had the pill though, just think of how much money we'd have saved.

Or if they had been conceived post-Roe.

In the WSJ this morning is an editorial discussing supposed rescissions to parent petitions to force changes to Desert Trails Elementary School in Adelanto, California (under California law, parents can "trigger" changes at failing schools). The people harassing the parents used pressure, lies about the effects of the trigger program, and other fraudulent misrepresentations to the parents to induce them to rescind their petitions. In addition, at least three parents have signed affidavits swearing that rescission documents were doctored before being delivered.
As I was reading this editorial (page A-12 of the print edition and behind Rupert's subscription wall online), my thoughts went to some in MSM's dismissing outright the possibility that Obama's supposed birth certificate had been forged. It may turn out that the certificate is legit. However, voter fraud, voter intimidation, misrepresentations to parents, document forgery and document alteration are inherent parts of the prog playbook.

TC, in the editorial it points out that the only reason that 2 of the people found out about the altered recission documents was whoever did it was dumb enough to submit 2 of them; one with the boxes checked and one without (which makes me wonder if everybody had to submit these to verify their previous vote as the ed bureaucracy spares no effort to cancel a vote they're not happy with). They also point out that the disputed forms are photocopies rather than originals.
Btw on the election front there are lots of ads by all candidates with Romney having by far the largest number. Most of them are much better than the initial ones, which were boilerplate negative ads that are insulting to the intelligence of the viewer.

Outright lies are the major portion of the prog playbook.

No mention of the Obama Regime BS garbage occurs on a daily basis in the leftist Propaganda sites.
How can it be that it did not occur to a single one of the best and brightest of America's major news media journalists that it might be interesting to ask Barack Obama if, in light of an Iranian court's ordering a death sentence for the crime of converting to Christianity, he still stands by his assertion that Islam shows us "the possibilities of religious tolerance"?

Religious tolerance is against the law in countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. How the Obama regime and their leftist propaganda sites believe that it is not is beyond belief. It is simply lies.

Coffee must not be strong enough.
There should be quotation marks before "How can it be---and the quote ends after religious tolerance" Apolize also for the doubling of the quoted paragraph.

An economic site I frequent has this. Building inventory that just sits in a warehouse is a problem since soon you run out of warehouse space:
The headline number of 2.98% has finally made it to the bottom of the economic growth range (3%-4%) that we might historically expect 11 quarters into a "recovery." That said, nearly two thirds of the "growth" comes from increasing inventory valuations -- while "real final sales" remains sluggish at a 1.10% annualized growth rate and "real" per-capita disposable income is growing at only about half that rate.
