GMax, now that you are visiting Hudson, you should try The Brick Pizza on the main street, a Neapolitan pizza joint owned by my cousin's daughter and son-in-law. Andrew Zimmern, that entertaining, but politically radical, chef and TV personality eats there two or three times a week.

Mark Folkestad

I meant to say now that you are visiting Hudson once a year, GMax.

GMax

Its actually Prescott, but I did not expect anyone to know where that is. I will keep your pizza recommendation in mind. Thanks.

Porchlight

GMAX. Hudson is where TWINKIES go for Sunday beer!!!!

Yep. Made many a run in my MN days. Couple of old school bars in Hudson I enjoyed quite a bit.

Porchlight

Andrew Zimmern goes all the way to WI for pizza 2-3 times/week? Well, I guess it's not that far - maybe he lives in Stillwater or something.

Mark Folkestad

Porchlight, Zimmern has lived in both Minneapolis and St. Paul in the last few years. But Hudson is near to a guy who prowls every corner of the globe for exotic or disgusting food. Zimmern is despised by most of the conservative bloggers up here, especially Mitch Berg. But if he doesn't venture into politics, most people love the guy.

Clarice, one of Zimmern's recent shows was in Israel, and I noticed eggs were mixed with cheese in a few dishes in Jewish homes. Are eggs not considered meat in the Kosher rules?

Sara, I live in 'Sconsin, and it's become SCARY-VILLE. By any measurable standard Scott Walker has been WILDLY successful. This whole brouhahahahaha, was and has been about the power or lack thereof, of the PUBLIC SECTOR GOOOOONIONS. The GINORMOUS LIBTARD TANTRUM over the last year and a half, is UNPRECEDENTED in American politics.
The ENTIRE Democrat Senate Minority Caucus, actually RAN AWAY and crossed into ILLINOIS for SEVERAL WEEKS, in an effort to ROADBLOCK the legislations and bills that they (the LIBTARD DEMOCRATS in the WI SENATE) had ZERO POWER to BLOCK. GOOOOONIONS NATIONWIDE have spent MILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLIONS in an effort to overturn a DULY ELECTED RESULT, that they didn't like.
GOVERNOR WALKER, is a man of principle and integrity.

Gmax, I once endured a four-hour traffic jam outside of Beloit. Silly state troopers had a roadblock searching cars on the way _into_ a Dead show at Alpine Valley. Oddly enough, most readily reachable contraband was consumed by the time cars reached the searchers. :)

DailyKos has a diary "Former Law Professor Shows us why Zimmerman is the Aggressor and Liar" that is pathetic but amusing.
Their 'smoking gun' is:
If Zimmerman indeed was returning to his vehicle as the dispatcher asked then Martin would not say “why are you following me,” but rather “why were you following me?” Martin’s girlfriend corroborates this statement of Zimmerman’s.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/05/21/1093380/-Former-Law-Professor-Shows-us-why-Zimmerman-is-the-Aggressor-and-Liar

They are basing this on what Dee Dee said. One small problem. DD did not use 'are' OR 'were'. Her exact statement is "why you followin' me for?". Listen at 10:38.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/19/us/trayvon-martins-friend-tells-what-she-heard-on-phone.html?_r=2

I have noticed a lot of media sources taking the liberty to translate DD's ebonics into english and this is a prime example of why they should quote her statements exactly how she makes them, word for word, no matter how stupid they may sound.

That Gtar looks cool, Mel. Great for learning scales, I'd imagine, since the notes could be illuminated. Alternatively, one could go to http://fretmagic.com.

daddy

Anecdotal but promising.

Stopped for a burger tonight at a local Pub. Two blue collar boys sitting nearby were drinking heavy and jabbering loudly in a political discussion.

The quieter one said that last time he voted for Obama but not this time. The other one, the loud mouthed truck driver, identified himself as "an NPR listening independent". Went on and on about "Buffett needs to be taxed like his secretary", and "AGW catastrophe's are impending" etc, all standard NPR tropes, but even he said that he couldn't vote for Obama again "because of his lack of leadership and because of what he's done to the economy, so even tho' Romney may suck, he had to vote for Romney this time because Obama was worse."

Thought that was interesting. The word "Racism" never came up, but the eagerness with which they both expressed and explained their previous vote for Obama led me to conclude that it was very important for them to let each other know that previously they had voted for Obama and why. That told me that the stigma of being personally viewed as "Racist" was important to each of them. They did not want to be considered as "Racists", so they were preemptively explaining why they weren't "Racists" to each other due to their previous vote.

It struck me from listening to them that the 2008 social pressure to vote for a minority is no longer a factor. It obviously was back then, but now they have their own personal track record of voting and can say, "Hey, I voted for Obama in 2008, I gave him a chance, so I'm not a Racist, and I'm not gonna' vote for him again because he's done awful."

That struck me as an important point---they are now personally inoculated against charges of "Racism", because their 2008 vote got that "Racism" monkey off their back. Back then they had no rejoinder to the charge of "Racism", but in 2012 they do, ("Been there, done that"), and I expect millions of others find themselves in the same position.

That to me was heartening.

Cecil Turner

Seriously, how long do we have to pretend the source of the screams is in doubt? Even if there weren't an eyewitness, Zimmerman himself, and the physical evidence, there's the absolute ludicrousness of competing theories that posit Zimmerman overhauling a kid obviously faster and beating his fists with his face. This is from narc's timeline link above (furnished by Corey):

1917:20 - Shot fired; screams from Zimmerman cease
Looks like even the special prosecutor is giving up on the "screams from Trayvon" point.

I have noticed a lot of media sources taking the liberty to translate DD's ebonics into english

And then quote them as a verbatim record. KaKa does it as well. It's indicative of the level of straw-grasping when all the actual evidence points away from their preferred conclusion.

Janet

That struck me as an important point---they are now personally inoculated against charges of "Racism", because their 2008 vote got that "Racism" monkey off their back.

Hey daddy,

I think you're right. "I gave Obama a chance but..." will be a defining feature this election. Romney's job (as he sees it, I think) is to not scare these folks away.

Interestingly, I noticed a sort of similar reaction during the Dem primary in 2008. Lib friends would say to friends (paraphrasing) "I know Obama is really exciting and black and all, but Hillary really has more experience." Meaning, don't judge me, I'm not a racist, but I don't think he's the best candidate. But they obviously didn't hold out against The Narrative, or at least not enough of them did.

Porchlight

Mark F,

I like Zimmern. He is great at describing how things actually taste (as opposed to Bourdain who just kind of says "mmmm, that is so good" which doesn't tell anyone anything). I didn't know his politics, but it doesn't surprise me that he'd be a lefty.

Zimmern is several years sober, too, btw, and when I heard him tell his story about cleaning up, I was very moved by it. He seems like a decent guy.

rse

LUN is an important story from NRO on how UN agencies are using the concept of human rights to destroy the concept of individuality globally.

Virtually everything going on in education in the US, for example, and being called Common Core steers very quickly into the UN position that everyone in the world get basic skills and that's it. After that we are to work on attitudes and values and emotions so students see need for transformative change. I think that the anger at ALEC is in part to cover up the very coordinated intl effort to use education to transform the West without it being apparent until it is too late.

To say this admin is cooperating would be to minimize. To say it is a Corporatist boondoggle would be putting it mildly. The Broadband Commission's role in all of this and the billions pushed by the Stimulus are just other examples of the looting to political insiders.

more on Arizona & the birth documents verification -

"Eight weeks ago, the secretary of state asked Hawaii officials merely for an email confirming the Department of Health has a certified copy of the birth certificate, but Hawaii officials have not complied."

and -

"Bennett explained that under Hawaii law, government officials can request verification that the state has possession of a valid birth certificate.

“They could say yes tomorrow, and the whole thing goes away,” Bennett said. “If they can’t say yes to that simple question, then it makes me wonder if we have to take it to another level.”"

Cecil:

Looks like even the special prosecutor is giving up on the "screams from Trayvon" point.

A pedantic point -- what you aare qoting from was a timeline prepared by the Sanford Police, not Corey's crack investigating team. It's pretty clear that the Sanford police quickly decided that the screams were coming from Zimmerman. Based on what's in the evidence file, I do not see that another interpretation is reasonable.

Nevertheless, Corey's folks have not conceded this point, AFAIK.

I had jury duty yesterday but wasn't picked. I'm on-call this week (didn't have to go in today). One thing I found odd was the questions that the lawyers asked the jurors. Right there in front of everyone they ask -
"Have any of you or someone close to you been arrested for a DUI?"
"Have any of you or someone close to you suffered from depression & been on medication?"
Questions like that. The guys on trial were presumed innocent & they didn't have to say anything we kept being told, but the jury people had to answer all kinds of personal questions in front of us all. It didn't seem right.

Janet

This from a libtard friend regarding the Church's lawsuit against the Health Care Bill:

"Thank God someone is trying to improve this country. First of all, over 90% of American Catholics use contraceptives so let's not be hypocrites. Second, the church is simply trying to grow it's numbers. There is no biblical reason to follow this doctrine and these 90% realize this. Lastly, if you act as a business, you should be treated as such. Is it not Catholic to insure all Americans have access to healthcare?"

Yes, Virgina, there is still a whole swathe of the country who neither understand first principles nor care. Said libtard is a practicing Catholic, by the way.

Cecil,

Interested parties can also listen to eye/ear witness John's clear description of events and then try and decipher DeeDee's placement of Trayvon "right by his daddy's house" (8:40 to 9:10 on the tape). Also note Bernie's try at a stick save by changing the initial "his house" to "his ass". She's going to make a marvelous witness.

Janet

I was never even called into the jury box, so I didn't have to answer anything...but there was a whole group of us sitting in the courtroom to possibly be put in if lots of the jurors were excused. I felt bad for some of the people.

Mafia-style end for Australia's flawed Obama mugs

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Australian officials wanted to get rid of some commemorative mugs that misspelled President Barack Obama's name. And boy, did they ever.

A Parliament House official told senators on Monday that 198 mugs were smashed and buried under wet concrete at a loading dock behind the building. Sen. John Faulkner called it a "mafia-style execution" for the mugs, which had an extra "r" printed in Obama's first name.

The government made 200 of the mugs to commemorate the president's planned visit to Australia in 2010, which was later canceled. No mugs were created when the American president finally made it to Australia last year.

Only two of the mugs were ever sold from the Parliament House gift shop, including one to the journalist who reported that Obama's name had been misspelled.

"Due to the sensitivity associated with the mistake that was made with the president's name, the last thing we wanted was for the fragments to be found on a garbage tip somewhere," said Bronwyn Graham, the Parliament House official.

"I am not saying it was a bad idea. It is creative; I will give you that," Faulkner told Graham and her superior, David Kenny, who had authorized the disposal.

"You have not buried any other mistakes in concrete, have you Mr. Kenny, per chance?" Faulkner asked. Kenny said he had not.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 24% of American Adults still believe the man who shot Martin should be found guilty of murder. But that’s down from 33% in late March when the case first began to draw national headlines and 30% in early April.

Forty percent (40%) now think George Zimmerman, who has been charged with second degree murder in the Martin shooting, acted in self-defense. That’s up 25 points from 15% in March and up 16 points from 24% last month. Thirty-six percent (36%) remain undecided, compared to 55% two months ago.

GMAX

AliceH

--the minute someone would raise their hand after being asked--

It was clear to me that the "at any time" meant you could wait until after all the questions, then raise your hand, then go up to privately discuss which specific issue you didn't want to share with a roomful of strangers.

This option was used by a lot of folks when I was in St. Louis city.

In my current small town location, every one pretty much already knew everyone's business, so not much point in not acknowledging that yes, my son is currently on parole, and I've had the two DUI's and my BIL is a felony defendant in a drug case. In fact, the longest part of voir dire involved everyone explaining how they personally knew the prosecutor (you're my neighbor, our kids play baseball, you go to my church, you're my cousin, etc) or the defendant (ditto), than any other subject area.

Narc - I think jury pool questionnaires differ a lot. Here (MO) I only answer about 6 yes/no questions in writing (I'm a citizen, not a felon, etc) before being put through voir dire. I imagine if no voir dire, the questionnaires are much more extensive.

DrJ

There are other ways sometimes. Once I was called for jury duty, and the timing was awful. I was in the batch for initial screening, and I was the first one questioned.

Turns out my estranged spouse (the divorce was not final yet) worked for the defense counsel. Duty bound, I informed the court of this.

Said the judge: "Why does this matter?"

"Because I would be spending more time watching defense counsel. I've heard the stories."

The judge chuckled and said "I think we better let this one go."

Absolutely. There were two in Dallas this week. In one a black guy went to the kitchen section in Target, opened a knife package, passed a random white woman, plunged the knife in her back, and kept casually walking. He's in custody. The second incident, involving a black career criminal setting a 76 yo female stranger on fire is unfathomable. A cop across the street saw her stumbling in flames out the door.
