Dont get real excited about WTI pricing, given Brent is still considerably higher. Eventually, WTI producers will figure out how to get their product to other markets, reduce the glut and as oil becomes a fungible commodity without regional limitations, the price window will close, upward.

GMAX-- Obviously the key for consumers is that WTI and Brent are BOTH falling, quickly roughly in tandem. Second, the Cushing bottleneck easing cuts in alot of different ways. Yes, Asian customers will bid up the WTI price higher as Cushing crude becomes available to them, but that simutaneously puts DOWNward pressure on Brent. BTW, for us in the NE states alot of gasoline is imported from offshore refineries that probably paid Brent for the crude in the first place. Also, increasing USA crude and refined EXPORTS improves the Dollar position, and that strengthening Dollar puts further downward pressure on WTI/Brent dollar prices. So, no I don't expect WTI to rise to Brent; the Delta betwen WTI and Brent will obviouly shrink, but it's not a lock it winds up closer to current Brent.

Henry you are going to like this one. Reince Priebus dunks on Debbie Does America. He is basically telling her his ground gain is better than theirs and they have a big edge in early voting. Here:

If Wisconsin goes red, it’s lights out for Barack Obama. Putting it in the red column for the first time since 1984 would be a really big deal . . . I don’t think there’s a state in the country where the GOP knows the voters better than Wisconsin . . . We’ve been analyzing this state for two and a half years. Contacting two and a half million voters, having all of that consumer data, the Prosser election, the state legislative recall challenges . . . You have a pattern here of success that is going to make it easier to win here in November.”

“We’re not seeing any fatigue on our side at all. One of the biggest problems that the Democrats have is that a decent number of Democrats tell pollsters and in focus groups, ‘we may not be Republicans, but we think this recall stuff is out of control. A legislative disagreement with Walker is not enough to have a recall and spend millions of dollars on that.’ To many Democrats, this is absurd. That’s a problem in their turnout model that they don’t know what to do with.”

“The idea of tracking early votes is not a process that is unknown or a vague reality to the state and national parties. We track early votes every day. We know what’s turned in. We know, to a reasonable degree of certainty, how those ballots look in comparison to the voting propensity of those voters, people who we believe to be GOP voters. We know if there are any major problems in early and absentee ballots. We feel very good right now about where we’re sitting regarding absentee ballots.”

Ig/MelR-- The "spiking" Dollar, is realy only true with the Euro and the commodity currencies i.e. the Aussie Dollar and Canadian Loonie. IF, Ben and the FOMC say no more QE, then the Dollar will rise across the currency board, and there will be sharp drops in the WTI/Brent prices. WTI/Brent are coming off ridiculous prices that resulted from investors looking for security from fiat currency debasement. If the Fed gives us a real currency, we'll have realistic fuel and food prices IMO.

The more I hear about this woman, the more I have disdain for her.

NK

Cause/Effect-- IMO the Dollar is rising fundementally in response to Euro weakness, not from any intrinsic increase in Dollar value (the Dollar isn't rising in Yen and Franc terms for instance). The Euro economy is heading towards recession, so the US economy is in relatively better shape, resulting in a Dollar rise relative to the Euro. If the Fed stops debasing, then the Dollar will further rise relative to all currencies, due to that intrinsic reason, IMO.

These delicate libtard women make me sick. My mother-in-law had my husband's oldest sister in the field during beet harvest. She went into labor, but no one was around where she was working, so she delivered her baby herself, tied her to her body with some kind of contraption she fashioned out of her belt and bandana and then went back to work until the truck came by to pick her up to go home and cook a farmer's afternoon supper for 10. Working a 12 hour day in the fields while pregnant or nursing has alot more cachet, to me, than sitting all day for a bar exam. But that is just me.

Isn't Europe's implosion caused by decades of poor choices in regards to government spending?

NK

Chub@4:22 -- that's what I see (sorry to interrupt Ig). The EZ implosion will further reduce world demand, but Oil prices rose for months with weak demand. Now let's look in our crystal ball, what if the Fed takes steps to increase Dollar valuation relative to all currencies, what happens to Dollar denominated oil prices then? I know a leading question, but I think the answer's obvious.

Chubby

((Isn't Europe's implosion caused by decades of poor choices in regards to government spending?

Chubby

NK,

((what if the Fed takes steps to increase Dollar valuation relative to all currencies,))

how would the Fed "increase dollar valuation" relative to other currencies? whenever the Fed takes action in the form of QE, the dollar tanks, and then commodities, and the stock markets in general, rise. that seems to have been the observable pattern since ~2008, when I first started watching this stuff.

MarkO

Remember, when King Nebuchadnezzer looked in the furnace, he saw a fourth man."
--stuff Obama (almost) said

NK

The Fed can raise dollar valuation first by announcing no new QE, and then announcing that the extremely low rate policy will end in 2014. Basically by doing the opposite of what the Fed has been doing since 2008, and without actually increasing rates, the Fed would increase the Dollar value across the board. Eventually, US economic growth and interest rates would to exceed other currencies in order to sustain a stronger dollar. But first step, the Fed has to stop debasing the Dollar with a ZIRP and QE machinations. That's my take on macroeconomics.

JPod on Commentary:

"about Judaism is far more telling. In the first place, the claim is transparently absurd. We can quickly pass over the fact that John Adams and James Madison, among the most educated men in the world at the time, knew Hebrew as well as Latin and Greek and just say that the president is, to put it mildly, punching above his weight here. So let’s move on to the fact that every president until the modern era knew more about Judaism than Barack Obama because the Bible was the one book every literate person knew, and the Bible includes the books Christians call the “Old Testament,” and a working knowledge of the Old Testament certainly is the best introduction to “Judaism” there is.

Earlier presidents did not learn the Talmud, of course, but if Barack Obama ever has, that would come as news to me. There is no indication from Obama’s own writing that he is especially Bible-literate, and we can presume that his notorious pastor of 20 years used the Bible primarily as flavoring for his political duck soup. I have no doubt that, among presidents closer to our time, Jimmy Carter was far more conversant in the lore of Biblical Judaism, for all the good it did his corrupted soul when it comes to the Jewish state."

jimmyk

Isn't Europe's implosion caused by decades of poor choices in regards to government spending?

Pretty much, but also serious overregulation, especially of labor markets, like making it impossible to fire people. Imagine the teachers unions running most of the economy, and that's Europe. That's why Barry loves Europe so much.

Macro theory has less validity and impact than we have been indoctrinated to believe.

Chubby

thanks NK. if that happens, I will find it interesting to watch other dynamics in play. somewhere, (but I forget where), in my reading today, a finance honcho projected that there cannot be any real growth until rates rise.

NK

MelR@4:47-- that assumes the math is valid. The 2007-2009 Dollar destruction was the result of the enormous housing bubble bursting. What you call math, I call the Fed-- and all of our-- refusal to accept writing off losses from home equity destruction. If those losses are realized, then wouldn't the 'math' add up? So why aren't the losses realized?... Ah... TBTF Banks and rich investors will become insolvent -- we can't have that. So because we have socialized the losses on MBS (and rate swaps), the Fed has imposed ZIRP and debased the Dollar in a futile attempt to reflate the housing bubble-- just a little bit this time-- with inflation that kills consumers and savers.

Chubby

H&R, your "stuff Obama (almost) said" posts are very very funny.

NK

RickB@5:00-- I do agree with that. That's why I said earlier that the Fed has lost control of the money supply and is pushing on a ZIRP string. This only changes when strong growth occurs, and that will only occur when the policies of the last 5 years all change-- stop the insane $1.5 Trillion public debt every year, repeal Obamacare, reform the Tax Code, and rein in the EPA. If those things are done, economic growth will improve, and interest rates can rise to 'normal' levels. That will increase Dollar value and reduce fuel and food costs for US consumers, whch will enhance growth. A virtuous cycle-- but someone has got to eat the MBS losses to make the math add up. Who will that be? Bondholders or taxpayers?

Currency debasement does not create national wealth. are big exporters really winners from a weak Dollar? Yes in Dollar terms a 'weak dollar' causes exports to rise, but the raw material inflation that results from a weak Dollar squeezes exporter margins -- this is true for both manufacturers and Big Ag. So are exporters really winners from a weak Dollar? I doubt it. exports should be a function of making good products and services efficiently not currency manipulation. like inflation a weak Dollar is a lie that does not create real national wealth.

The losses have been abd continue to be realized. Maiden Lane programs cleared the system of the really bad stuff. The MBS have had their day of reckoning, where as the housing market continues to devolve. AAs far as the Fed and interest rates, are you suggesting that the Fed should have stayed with Volcker's overnight hike throughout the '80's, '90's, and '00s, no matter what the economy did?

Or do you want to go into the minutia of regulatory capture that the TBTF entities pursued when the bank holding rules changed in '85 that actually got us to where we are today?

Melinda Romanoff

Thanks, Jd, that really cheered me up.

NK

MelR--Yes MBS losses are slowly being cleared, alot of commercial property stuff has cleared, but the residential side remains in limbo, more from political and social reasons than anything else. as you correctly surmise, personally I think we all would have been better off if the losses were realized quicker and bigger back in 2009-2010 instead of the ridiculous Geithner schemes to recast residential mortgages-- so yes some harsh Volcker medicene would heave been better than the muddle of the last 4 years. But the Volcker medicene this time would have been much different than his 1980-1981 super high rates, because the underlying problems were different, ie clearing a bad debt bubble as opposed structural inflation. The whole Sandy Weil TBTF bank 'supermarket' thing is a way to philosophical question for me to ponder.

It's mechanical, and it refers to not only Sandy, but the undercutting of David Komansky's rule in favor of the "Managing Director Model", aka "Pay Me More Than Him, Now! Profits Will Come Later."

The Fed had very, very little to do with it. I was in the sausage factory and am intimate with it's workings, and they were seldom written about, so you wouldn't have found them unless you had an addiction to white papers. We can go through this, but it's tedious and I am working from memory. I'll pull cites when I can. You must also realize this has been my life's study, professionally and privately.

More later.

As i said above, TBTF bank governance is a way too philosophical question for me. But I'm willing to learn

The dollar going up drive the oil price down or was it the fear of a collapse in Euro drove a flight to safety i.e. the Dollar which in turn caused the dollar to go up and the oil prices to drop. I think its clear the fear is the independent variable, unless you think the dollar just goes up and down for no reason.

[OBAMA]
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!

[OBAMA & PAPAS]
Who, day and night, must scramble for polling,
Feed a wife and children, say five daily prayers?
And who has the right, as petty tinpot despot,
To audit everything you do?

Obama, Obama! Tradition.
Obama, Obama! Tradition.

[MOOCHELLE & MAMAS]
Who must know the way to make a proper home,
A quiet home, a liberal home?
Who must raise your family and run your home,
So Obama’s free to cook the country’s books?

Moochelle, Big Mama! Tradition!
Moochelle, Big Mama! Tradition!

[WHITE HOUSE STAFFERS]
At three, we started private school. At ten, we learned we’re special.
In college we learned Marxist cant. And now DC’s our shtetl.

The Staffers, The Staffers! Tradition!
The Staffers, The Staffers! Tradition!

[SONS/DAUGHTERS/WHATEVER]
And who does Moochelle teach to jetset twice a month
Preparing us to graze the public trough?

The daughters, their posse! In Gucci!
The daughters. While shrieking. For Beiber!

[AXELROD]
Spinmeister, spinmeister, make him a mensch.
Knit me a yarn, whitewash his stench.
Spinmeister, spinmeister, call up the Times
While Obama plays another nine.

Spinmeister, spinmeister, trot out the bull.
You hide the choom, bathhouses and blow.
Call MSM, for Obama needs
To be the darling of all he reads.

For Obama, make him a scholar.
For Moochelle, make her svelte as a deer.
For Biden, well, I wouldn't holler
If he were to, one night, disappear.

[OBAMA]
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!
Tradition, tradition! Tradition!

Debasement of the currency would occur if the base number of dollars was not destroyed in the '07-'09 deflation. That contraction was 5X what the Fed has "printed" to date.
How many of those lost dollars were circulating, and how many were just perceived wealth losses from the bubble bursting? How does this explain why gold rose? What the hell can the Fed do when the economy improves and all that new cash starts flowing--won't inflation accelerate? E. Gibbon does not approve of debasing currencies, and it looks to me like printing money will only return us to the bubble.
