[We note that 'Loyalty Day' is a Communist era relic in an update.]
Was it only a few years ago that conservatives were "frightened bedwetters" and "authoritarian cultists" who wanted a strong father figure to tuck them in safely at night?
OMG! Now libs are rallying behind a deity to save them from the scary Wall Streeters and the scary one percenters and the scary frackers, and, well, the scary world.
His halo has slipped slightly but we get the picture.
And yes, I'm sure I speak for many when I express regret that the team that brought us Joe Biden didn't select this as a campaign poster:
Many more suggestions can be found in the comments to this recent post.
WELL, IT'S ONLY ONE DAY A YEAR... Obama challenges his base to observe "Loyalty Day". Weird that Bush never thought of that [Oops, he did]! Well, Bush probably had the quaint notion that every day was loyalty day.
THE LIMITS OF REASON: It's a poor workmen who blames his tools - Reason gave me the feeling that this was a new law with this:
Who says House Republicans and President Obama never work together? From Whitehouse.gov:
In fact, the bill was a Communist-era relic, per Wikipedia:
It was made an official holiday by the U.S. Congress on July 18, 1958 (Public Law 85-529).[4][5] Following the passage of this law, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1, 1959 the first official observance of Loyalty Day. [6]
In 2011, and again in 2012[7] President Barack Obama issued an official proclamation of Loyalty Day on May 1 in accordance with the 1958 Congressional declaration,[8] as have many of his predecessors:
-
- George W. Bush, proclamation 8137 (April 30, 2007) [9]
- Bill Clinton, proclamation 6556 (May 1, 1993) [10]
- George H. W. Bush, proclamation 5962 (April 28, 1989) [11]
- Ronald Reagan, proclamation 4836 (April 14, 1981) [12]
- Jimmy Carter, proclamation 4493 (March 23, 1977) [13]
- Gerald Ford, proclamation 4354 (March 4, 1975) [14]
- John F. Kennedy, proclamation 3528 (April 18, 1963) [15]
LA PLUS CA CHANGE... Oh, dear.
A guy with a tiny pointed head is not such great optics. If that is their real poster they might want to work on that. Just saying.

William:

Yes. Let's sum up.
Of course, we might be dealing with a Broken Windows situation here. The more bridges Occupy can blow up, the more federal spending we'll need to repair them -- thus the more we will stimulate the economy and put construction workers back to work!!! Aha! I see now why Obama was friends with Bill Ayers. It was macro economic policy.
Obama secretly wants the Occupiers to succeed in blowing up bridges. He's pissed the FBI foiled the plot.

As long it's only "occupiers" trying to plant bombs, us Clevelanders don't have anything to worry about. When you aren't qualified enough to get a job at McDonalds, the only "bomb" you'll have is your resume.

This year, it seems that many of the rest of us are saying to them, "go away", and if you don't let's have the cops do their job, and arrest you (OWS). You had your protest last year, and now it is time to be serious again.
I don't think that sort of attitude is going to sit well with the self-indulgent occupiers. And, that is why I would not be surprised if they attempted to up the ante this year, to increase their visibility. And, the way to do that would likely seem to be with increased level of violence. If shitting on a car doesn't get enough attention, try blowing it up, etc.
Hope that I am wrong about this.
I am a bit worried here, now that I think about it. One of the purposes of Occupy is to get noticed, therefore apparently getting attention to the current cause - e.g. maybe, the plight of the 99%, how the banks (but, apparently not the government) are oppressing us, etc.Posted by: Bruce | May 02, 2012 at 09:29 AM

Fun campaign fact total recall spending to be in the $60-80 million range. All of the candidates hoping to challenge Gov. Scott Walker in the upcoming recall election raised a combined total of about $2 million, less than one-sixth of the $13.2 million that flowed into Walker's campaign war chest during the most recent reporting period.
Plus some national R group is dropping $1 million into each senate recall, where the D's have raised about $100k each, and the R's have raised $250k each separately. Any dollars the unions spend to match this will come from the Once's stash.

Maybe we can be relieved a bit that our own homegrown terrorists seem to come from the ranks of liberal arts grads, while Islamic terrorists seemed to have recruited a lot of STEM grads (maybe because our own STEM grads tend to have good jobs). Think about how much worse it would have been if Ayers and his friends had had the proper training for planning their terrorist attacks and blowing things up. Bruce raises a very good point. When 'Bam loses and there is Repub government, and a Repub budget based on Ryan principles, and Obamacare is repealed by reconciliation, AND the voters LIKE IT, the OWS 'bitter clingers' will be enraged. Why won't the hook up with AQ bombmakers at that point? In fact, I think that's exactly what will happen. That will be the end of the Democrats as a National Party.
Posted by: NK | May 02, 2012 at 09:46 AM
In the end though, I don't think that this is going to help the Dem politicians who have been endorsing the Occupy movement that much when it comes to the November elections. Sure, they may get a little more of the college educated youth vote, but I think will lose more of the middle class adult and less educated votes than they gain.
I am hopeful that this isn't going to work well for them this year. They had their silly Occupy protests last year. The cops mostly let them do their thing (mostly I think under orders from liberal politicians). But, mostly, the cities that enforced their laws the least, and gave the Occupiers the most slack, are the ones that ultimately had the most problems. I think that some of these cities learned their lessons. And, for those that didn't, I think that the protesters may try to up the ante, to get more shock value out of their protests.Posted by: Bruce | May 02, 2012 at 09:47 AM

Wow. If you haven't read BO's loyalty proclamation it is all about the communitarian vision for America where the individual is just raw material to meet the needs of others and especially the State.
Was going through my notes from yesterday this morning in light of what I know and can prove and feeling quite ill. Then that loyalty proclamation as the proverbial cherry on top. OMG. I am in the twilight zone with a roadmap out that will require more than a flak jacket for successful journeying.
I was thinking about this yesterday and today and it also pertains to the fools comment above. So many never learned the pertinent history in their own course of study or were deliberately taught things that are not so and have a tragic history they are unaware of. They are now the policy makers and they push ideas they do not really understand and all parrot the same mindless talking points. Most people become persuaded of the need for change by the sheer ubiquity of the common assault.

I lived one block from Warren Street 1984-1990-- in Cobble Hill-- so 'Bam was in my 'hood!! But the more interesting point is, in 1983-1985 the main cultural group in the heart of the Slope where this girl lived was Lesbian country. The more militant types in the Lesbian community did not want to hang with the gay guys in the Village, they wanted their own place-- Park Slope. It was a veritable alumnae association of the single sex girls colleges like Smith College. THIS GIRL went to Emma Willard prep school? did she go to Barnard? THIS GIRL lived in the Slope at THAT time? Oh please. The 'Bam mosaic is coming together-- those ChiTown rumors about 'Bam are looking more and more true.

I think that plan has been in place for quite a while. As has the race riot plan, and the rise of women plan.
My assumption is there will be lots of rumbling, and bad acts until late summer when everyone is scared to death and Obama will then heal the occupyers, and the race rioters, and the women. In October he will bring all the troops home from Afghanistan and declare the war over.
I believe that is his plan for re-election.

THIS GIRL went to Emma Willard prep school? did she go to Barnard? THIS GIRL lived in the Slope at THAT time? Oh please.
NK, she is probably a friend who agreed to be the mysterious girl in the book.
I wish some reporter had asked Obama about "the girl" before this story.
