It is interesting--The guts of his argument that the WH thinks this will appeal to the voters they need is intriguing. Is our first black president depending on upper class unmarried white women to carry him to victory?

" On the one hand, its public policy agenda is essentially a defense of existing arrangements no matter their effectiveness or sustainability, apparently premised on the assumption that American women can’t make cost-benefit calculations or indeed do basic math. In addition to ignoring the taxes that will be required of its businesswoman heroine across her working life, “The Life of Julia” hails a program (Head Start) that may not work at all, touts education spending that hasn’t done much for high school test scores or cut college costs, and never mentions that on the Obama administration’s own budget trajectory, neither Medicare nor Social Security will be able to make good on its promises once today’s 20-something Julias retire.

At the same time, the slide show’s vision of the individual’s relationship to the state seems designed to vindicate every conservative critique of the Obama-era Democratic Party. The liberalism of “the Life of Julia” doesn’t envision government spending the way an older liberalism did — as a backstop for otherwise self-sufficient working families, providing insurance against job loss, decrepitude and catastrophic illness. It offers a more sweeping vision of government’s place in society, in which the individual depends on the state at every stage of life, and no decision — personal, educational, entrepreneurial, sexual — can be contemplated without the promise that it will be somehow subsidized by Washington"

Clarice, I am SO glad you are on our side! And, BoatBuilder, thank you for your kind words. It seems when people here misunderstand what one is saying, all hell breaks loose! Gus, of all people, said I was making a fool of myself--Rick Ballard said I was too concerned--Ex said I was a troll--MadJack said not to dare contradict Boat Builder--CC said exchange odd. To write any comment on this blog is certainly not for the faint-hearted!

To write any comment on this blog is certainly not for the faint-hearted!

Sailor,

Most of us know each other very well and for a very long time, and altho we argue and disagree, we are loyal. I think people jump quickly when there is a misunderstanding of a person we know very well, at least that's what generally causes me to reply forcefully.

If you stick around you too will develop that sort of understanding of your fellow posters (and they of you) and you will know what I mean.

Danube of Thought

Oh, those wacky Iranians. Don't miss the video.

Love this place. I visit here every single day. I may not say much, but it's become my second home. Keep up the great work that you do!

As his candidate is poised to lose the primary Tuesday, Trumpka claims the union intimidation has worked even if Walker ultimately wins.

"And what you'll see is, hopefully a change of attitude by those senators that are there, on both sides of the aisle, to be able to say, they sent us here to create jobs and fix the economy, not to make war on workers, not to demonize workers and take everything away from them."

Note, Trumpka is backing the people that stopped iron mining and 2000+ union mining jobs in March.

Jane

Dot,

A close friend of mine (who left Iran after college) has a cousin who was arrested for having alcohol in his apartment. (His ex-girlfriend dropped a dime on him.) He was missing for several months and no one knew what happened to him. Eventually the police went to his parent's home and told them they would release the guy in exchange for the deed to their house. They complied. It appears these guys got off easy.

rse

henry-just finished Terence Kealey's able refutation of the idea that govt spending can create wealth.

Trumpka et al are in deep denial if they do not appreciate that this whole toxic model is about to go on trial throughout the West. But especially in the US and Australia.

Danube of Thought

Well Jane, as Ramsey Clark once famously said, "long live the Ayatollah Khomeni! Long live the Iranian revolution!"

Jane-I just finished David Satter's It was a Long Time Ago. And It Never Happened Anyway. Very alarming view of Russia today. I had not appreciated before that book how much Putin sees Iran as part of Russia's legitimate and necessary sphere. Not just of influence but as conjoined state operations.

It also made gwb's remark about understanding putin and being on same page baffling still so many years later.

Clarice;

They're going for the Elizabeth Warren, Nancy Pelosi clueless upper class white woman vote.

DoT you may want to check out the latest edition of Foreign Policy where they discuss the Ummah's war on women extensively.

That it is coupled with widespread pederasty and homosexuality shows it for what it is; a mysogynistic, depraved sick culture.

Nothing in it I can see yet about Elizabeth Warren or Sandra Fluke or Julia.

henry

rse, whether Trumpka is in deep denial or fears loss of his ill gotten power and perks, he is desperate to have us fear the paper tiger he leads. We don't.

Bruce

What is a bit chilling is reading the comments to the NYT article. Not so much that "Red" America looks down on "Blue" America, because many of us here don't live in the urban centers because of their decay, crime, etc. But, that they think that the author, ROSS DOUTHAT, is almost evil for suggesting that the view of society shown by Julia may not be attractive to many Americans. And, for the comments, that was mild to many of the others.

narciso

For any who may have missed it, here's the throng at Obama's blockbuster kickoff in Ohio:

GMax

Gallup has this in their most recent registered voter poll which is using demographic far more favorable to the Democrats than the exit polls are likely to show:

In 2008, Barack Obama won the Catholic vote by nine points, 54/45, over John McCain on his way to a seven-point victory in the national popular vote. Three months after announcing the HHS mandate that would force religious hospitals, schools, and charities to fund contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients, Obama has lost that edge among the tens of millions of Catholic voters. A new Gallup poll shows Obama in a dead heat with Mitt Romney

DebinNC

I give Obama credit for a bit of honesty. He's telling voters that if they stay with him long enough their incomes will drop so precipitously that they'll qualify for Pell Grants and Head Start.

GMax

If Trumpka is letting the faithful in on a "moral" victory talking point, before the primary election, the internals must be terrible for them. I would say that every penny they piss away on this Quixote tilt at the windmill, is one dollar that eludes the grasp of Zero, so its all good. Go all in Richard, you know you want to...

GMax, a big part of Trumpka's problem is that the collective bargaining issue polls less than 20%. He has already lost the battle of ideas, and is about to lose at the ballot box Tuesday, then again in the June recall, and then the big one in November.

Extraneus

Wow, Bruce, you're right about the comments. Some of those people are just pathetic.

matt

Clarice, your piece this am is masterful.

We have, for the first time I can remember, a Tuesday night seminar at our parish discussing the War on Catholic Values. That certainly is putting it front and center.

Russia has, since the early 19th Century played the Great Game with Britain and France over access and denial thereof to warm water ports in Iran and greater India. The court of Iran was constantly being bought, sold and rented and the Russians took Baku and Azerbaijan in 1722.

In the 19th Century, Russia took huge chunks of Iran and never gave them back. Then, in 1945 after the joint occupation of Iran by Russia and the UK, the Russians tried to pull what they did in North Korea, but failed. Fascinating history in that part of the world.

On the pic DoT posted of the half empty arena -- how old is that girl in the center who is being held presumably by her mother?

"Hold me mommy. That scary man keeps saying he's going to take away all my money."

Going through the WH flickr, it was interesting to see this pic where seemingly throngs of service members swarm Obama:

But then there's a wider angle shot:

I have no idea if that size crowd to greet the president is small or large. Maybe that's 100% of the available soldiers to be there and every last one of them is waiting to meet Obama. Maybe the pic was snapped at the end of the rope line greeting, and thousands of folks already met Obama and have left. But in any event it's obviously a much bigger space than necessary to accommodate the number of people lined up at the time the photo was taken to meet their Commander in Chief.

pagar

Narciso, I don't figure safety was ever the main concern. "A consulate just a short walk from Mazar-e Sharif’s Blue Mosque, one of the country’s most sacred religious sites, was seen as a way to reassure members of the ethnic Tajik and Uzbek minorities that dominate the north that the United States was committed to Afghanistan for the long haul."

How close it was to the Mosque, now that is a serious selection issue!

Well it was buried deep in the article but this is news you can use via the NYT:

Republicans are also making inroads in voter registration. While Democrats retain enrollment advantages in most of the tossup states that register voters by party, their advantage has shrunk in all of them, state elections data shows. Nevada, which had 100,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in 2008, now has only 35,000 more.

The Democratic enrollment advantage has also been reduced in Florida and Pennsylvania. Iowa and New Hampshire, where Democrats held the edge in 2008, now both have more registered Republicans. And in Colorado, the only tossup state where registered Republicans outnumbered Democrats in 2008, the Republicans have widened their edge.

I think this is a 'Winning the Future' moment, what were they thinking, rhetorical question,

A different President, a different Corps
It wasn't just the volume, but also the fact that there didn't appear to be anyone below maybe O5 (Captain/Colonel) applauding for Obama, but all of those out front above that level seemed to be clapping for him. And, it was those officers requiring politics to advance who were up front and shaking his hand after his speech. The Obama speech seemed a lot more formal too, including the playing of "Hail to the Chief". George Bush was being, well, George Bush, working the line on the way in, and mugging for shots afterwards with the troops.

As you said, the difference is stark and speaks for itself.
