Two new stories on medical evidence in the Zimmerman case:
ABC:
ABC News Exclusive: Zimmerman Medical Report Shows Broken Nose, Lacerations After Trayvon Martin Shooting
A medical report compiled by the family physician of accused Trayvon Martin murderer George Zimmerman and obtained exclusively by ABC News found that Zimmerman was diagnosed with a "closed fracture" of his nose, a pair of black eyes, two lacerations to the back of his head and a minor back injury the day after he fatally shot Martin during an alleged altercation.
Unsurprising, considering neighbors had reported a bandaged-up Zimmerman weeks ago.
Autopsy results show Trayvon Martin had injuries to his knuckles
SANFORD, Fla. —
WFTV has confirmed that autopsy results show 17-year-old Trayvon Martin had injuries to his knuckles when he died.
The information could support George Zimmerman's claim that Martin beat him up before Zimmerman shot and killed him.
Richard Kurtz, a black (IIRC) mortician who serves the black community, had the good sense to see nothing unusual about Martin when he prepared him for the funeral. Anyone who took that seriously is surprised by the current report. Since you ask, I expressed reservations about the mortician at the end of this old post.
MORE: The all-news WCBS 880 in New York provides this narrative-shifting coverage:
George Zimmerman's head wounds after Trayvon Martin shooting likely bolster self-defense claims
(CBS News) Medical records showing that George Zimmerman was treated for a fractured nose and cuts to the back of his head after fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin will likely bolster Zimmerman's argument that Martin attacked him, CBS News legal analyst Jack Ford said on "CBS This Morning" Wednesday.
...
"This now allows the defense to show up in the courtroom, let George Zimmerman tell his story and bring in a medical expert that says, 'Black and blue under the eyes, broken nose, cut on the back of the head,'" said Ford, "and the defense can argue that's consistent with George Zimmerman being attacked by Trayvon Martin, and then the Stand Your Ground defense comes into play."
Well, Stand Your Ground doesn't apply when you are lying on the ground, but we get his drift.
They have some pushback a bit later in the story:
Ford, a former prosecutor, said that the medical report's revelations, while not good for the prosecution, don't exactly torpedo their case.
"Here's what you're going to get: I'm sure the prosecution is going to say, 'Hey, you know what this shows? This shows that Trayvon Martin was fighting for his life because he was attacked by George Zimmerman here,'" said Ford, "and the defense is going to say, 'That's not so at all, and we've got the medical testimony to show it.'"
Hmm. Just how are they going to contradict Zimmerman's story? From the Zimmerman bond hearing when O'Mara, the defense counsel, was grilling Gilbreath, the lead investigator for the state:
O'MARA: [Do you have] Any evidence that conflicts any eyewitnesses, anything that conflicts with the contention that Mr. Martin assaulted first?
GILBREATH: That contention that was given to us by him, other than filling in the figures being one following or chasing the other one, as to who threw the first blow, no.
The state can certainly speculate but at some point their story needs to explain these injuries to Zimmerman and Martin. How they establish beyond a reasonable doubt their theory of Zimmerman as a depraved aggressor without actual evidence remains a bit of a puzzle. Jeralyn Merritt offers a well-informed guess as to the state's theory but doesn't think it will fly.
As Zoidberg, would say, all good choices. LOL,

Does anyone seriously believe that a group of rednecks with winchesters can stop the entire might of United states Military?
"Is there any reason to believe, if it came to that, the military would not be with the rednecks?"
Then who will be in charge after said Military coup-the rednecks?
Honestly, hun,do you seriously think a redneck-centric government could conduct the seriously complicated functions of government including the drafting of laws, the setting of public policy both Domestic and Foreign, the co-ordination between the executive,Judicial and legislative branches????
Hun,come on,you seriously expect Leeroy and Jethro to give up gator hunting and go to Washington......can Leeroy and Jethro spell washington?
What...a mandate of cornbread and fried squirrel?
Let Liberals do what liberals do best and that's the complicated business of running government..........seriously.....stay in the swamps because without you rednecks we'd be over-run with gators.

I have never seen a case before where ALL of the evidence backs up the version of the defendant. This is about as cut and dried as a case can get and still Zimmerman is charged solely because a bunch of bigots came to town and had a parade.
The prosecutor needs to be brought up on charges. Were there any sanction for this sort of malfeasance other than losing an election Zimmerman wouldn't be facing trial.
The really tragic part is that this case was picked as a means at stirring up racial animus and at getting the Stand Your Ground law repealed but it failed spectacularly on both counts as SYG didn't apply in this case and Zimmerman turns out to be several different flavors of minority who is a registered Democrat.

Exactly as I predicted, the extent of Zimmerman's is essential to his case. And, exactly as I predicted, white-power wingnuts would acknowledge that, if and when it came out that his injuries were serious.
As for me, I remain only interested in justice and, indeed, consider the evidence of Zimmerman's injuries to add much weight to his account of what happened...

Yay, More Lizzy Warren hilarity:
"Pow Wow Chow," is the Indian Cookbook Lizzy's dead cousin edited, and which is now the sole remaining thing Liz can desperately point to as possible proof that one of her ancestors at least talked to an Indian before killing them. The book has been listed on Amazon for years, and of the 3 reader reviews, the last one was posted way back in 2006.
Today miraculously 6 new reader reviews appeared. These are the best of them:
"(5.0 out of 5 stars) [RAVES FROM FELLOW FACULTY MEMBERS]
I've received nothing but rave reviews from my colleagues after whipping up treats from this cookbook in the faculty lounge kitchen. Admirers of Pow Wow Chow may also enjoy Bow Wow Chow, a Indonesian-influenced cookbook from a former professor now in politics."
"15 of 15 people found the following review helpful:
(2.0 out of 5 stars) [SITTING BULL]
I made this purchase hoping I would be invited to Indian lunches but I haven't got past the hot water part."
"10 of 10 people found the following review helpful:
(3.0 out of 5 stars) [A FEW GOOD RECIPES] May 14, 2012
By OutOfControl - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pow Wow Chow: A Collection of Recipes from Families of the Five Civilized Tribes : Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole (Paperback)
Overall this selection is lacking and has just a few good recipes inside. One for Humble Pie and another for Roasted Crow."
Methinks there might be more Pow Wow Chow Reviews tomorrow, hopefully at least one from trusted Indian food chow hound, bgates (hint, hint)

Hold the Presses!---Breaking evidence for Liz's possibly being a Blood Sister from this morning's Boston Herald!
In the story, dateline 16 May, we learn the important new fact that Liz's dead cousin, who edited the Pow Wow Chow cookbook, is listed as having once been a judge of a student art show at a local Oklahoma Indian Museum! There may have also been a bakesale involved but thankfully they weren't in Massachusetts so nobody was arrested for that criminal activity.
This new revelation may not be enough to help tho' because Larry Sabato is quoted in the story as saying of Liz's Injun problem: “It’s glued to her now. This is going to be with her throughout the campaign. I don’t know how it goes away when you have so many unanswered questions.”
Liz's spokesperson is more optimistic, telling us that the brand new story we learned about just yesterday, of Liz being listed as "a woman of color" at Fordham, was "nothing new."
That should certainly have put that issue to rest I would imagine, except for an observation from a very sharp political science prof from Columbia University, Robert Shapiro. He tells us "The one knotty thing is that there may have been an element of deception."
Boy, I sure didn't see that one coming!

in 2008, I had lots of anecdotal evidence that large numbers of women who voted for Obama only did so because Romney wasn't the GOP candidate. I wonder if Obama's campaign directors found a similar trendline in their private polling, which then gave rise to their "war on womeen" offense. They have to turn independent women off Romney at all costs. Even the gay evolution performance was primarily aimed at independent women I think, because it appears to me, once again anecdotally, that independent women are very sympathetic toward gay marriage. But Drudge has been running a story for few days now that Romney is still leading Obama among women voters, and I don't think anything Obama does will change that. I think the reason is that women sense that Romneys'a a mensch, and as Obama appears ever more desperate to hang on to power, the more he appears to indie as an opportunistic unmensch.

from LI - Will Massachusetts Dems turn to Marisa?
"U.S. Senate candidate Marisa DeFranco will drop off more than 10,000 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, validating her primary run against Harvard Law professor Elizabeth Warren in the Democratic battle to unseat Republican Sen. Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race."
She better keep her eye on the Dem. machine. I think they are mad about having to spend money in primary races. Here in the 8th Congressional district in VA there has been shenanigans from the Rep. Jim Moran camp to cheat a primary opponent....invalidating & losing legitimate signatures (Obama did that in Illinois), "accidentally" leaving the opponents name off things, refusing to debate,...
I loved Jane's post about Dick being a good insight into what other citizens know & are keeping up with...IMO that is very important.

If they keep putting garbage out like the "Bain Capital" ad I saw last night, where they have some pathetic ambulatory compost heap whining about not having a job which, based on his appearance he probably did poorly, the bitching will only get louder. I hope the JEF's legacy is destroying the donk party. I think that's one task he might be capable of performing.

Time to stick a fork in it? Per radio this morning Wisconsin will release jobs census results today (28,000 net increase). The BLS survey had WI losing 18,000 jobs, thus Barrett ads on WI as worst state for jobs (please ignore that all WI job losses were in Milwaukee ... cough). The DNC must have known the BLS fudge would be exposed. All Barrett has left is the definition of "is": collective bargaining is a loser, his wife didi what the 18 month investigation of Walker hasn't found, and WI didn't lose jobs, it gained them. Turnout will still matter, but I think Walker will get his voters out.

It wouldn't be a bad outcome if someone like Huntsman launched a centrist party that ended up making the donks a peripheral irrelevancy. Maybe it would draw the RINOs out of the Republican party too. One can dream.

"I wonder if Obama's campaign directors found a similar trendline in their private polling, which then gave rise to their "war on womeen" offense."
It's a mistake to believe that the "war on women" was a meme dreamt up by political strategisits.
The phrase was coined because the last 2 years has seen your party introduce bill upon bill at the state and federal level that dismantles issues important to women.Hell last week we explored how Republican legislators were introducing bills that mandated sticking an object into a womans vagina just to satisfy the anger of the religous right.
Here's what I don't get;if politics is the organisation of people to use the power of their numbers to effect issues important to them why are the ladies of the right lying down while their male counter-parts run over them with a bus.Sure, righties have a tendency toward monarchism, but come on,ladies....you're getting shafted here.
Wake up.
Now,in an effort to change the reputation i've recevieved at JOM, i've been doing a bit of reading. In my ignorance I assumed that the righties were alwasy mysoginistic assholes, but it turns out that it was my precious holier than thoua dems that did very little to move forward womens rights back in the early days and my republican brethren who led the charge in bringing the ladies to the table in probably one of the most significant ways.
What happened to you guys?

Don't worry NK, I know the next three weeks are an eternity in politics (at least here). What this does is allow room to focus on the Lt Gov and the 4 senators while bouncing the rubble on Barrett. More a shift from defense to offense. We have a chance to save R control of the senate which requires a big push in Racine County.

FDR was against, in principle, the concept of government employee unions and their right to collective bargaining. He said “the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service.” Then he added that “I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place” in the public sector. “A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government.”
Is that clear enough for you Duda?

Ranger-- FDR laid out the principles of why public unions were wrong. The actual experience of the last 50 years since public unions were first permitted (Wisc was First!) shows the practical reality of why public union collective bargaining is a tragic mistake. there are 3 parties to public union bargaining-- the public employees (teachers, garbage men, cops, social workers etc), the taxpayers who use their 'services' AND pay for them, and elected politicians and bureaucrats who 'negotiate' with the unions -- and the taxpayers are never even in the room. Well guess what, over the years the public unions captured the politicians as partners and worked with the unions against the taxpayers'interests. The unions actively supported Dems, and Repubs bought off unions from going against them. either way, politicians gave away the store -- especially with pension benefits that are now coming due-- by siding with the unions against taxpayers. The governors in NJ and Wisc paid the price and got booted by voters; Calif and Ill are lost causes, the unions run the show there until those states are well and truly bankrupt. Public unions have civil service protection, god bless them, they keep that. BUT, they should have no collective bargaining rights, the voters decide what public workers should get paid, and that's it. Take the job or leave, no collectively bargained inside deals with politicians.

Exactly as I stated--and exactly as the law provides--Zimmerman's injuries can be a great help to his case but are no means essential to it. Perhaps the sweetest thing about them is the dismay they bring to the resident teenager, whose passion for justice is so intense that for two months now he has not adverted to a single exulpatory fact, while personally maligning anyone and everyone who does.
As the astute reader will recall, when the initial video of his head showed very little, bubu's view was that that destroyed his defense, and only a wingnut could contend otherwise.
With what now appears to be the state of the evidence, I don't believe this case should have been charged at all. I am fully in agreement with Dershowitz.

Ig-- we all know what Barry 'was doing' at UC. he was Ayers' sock puppet filling the CRT/'community activist' AA slot that Ayers demanded from UC to keep the peace around the campus. UC was paying tribute to the mob to keep the peace, a typical Alinsky tactic. Barrry had the Tribe seal of approval so-- easy call for UC. Later on, Barry greased the wheels so his wife could get a $350K do nothing job from UC. So barry was doing plenty at UC.

"This notion that you can't bring yourself to recognize public sector pension obligations is hilarious.
Of course you're reading at a 4th grade level so we have the bar set low for you."
The leaders of the two largest Unions in wisconsin agreed to renegotiate those pension terms in an effort to help the state meet it's financhial obligations. It was heralded as a "Walker victory" but the Guv chose to completely crush them over dealing with them.
All in an effort to help the state balance it's budget and take on it's defict.even though strangely enough no new taxes would be raised from the richest one per cent of Wisconsinites to help acheive these goals.
Does this sound familiar?
This is a purely right wing strategy....rather than tax the wealthy or corporations, they'd rather the poorest members of society give up what they can barely afford, pension,Social security, medicare, medicaid etc to help the states and the federal government meet their financhial obligations. In a time of great income inequality it's amazing that we can actually see how a political party introduces legislation that widens the gap between the rich and the poor.

DoT-- as you know I disagree. IMO, the medical evidence is vital to GZ. It is empirical and eyewitness evidence that corroborates GZ's version of events. If GZ didn't have this evidence (say he just didn't go to the Dr at all) then his defense would be his own testimony, and that GZ testimony could be rebutted by inconsistent statements he made to various cops that night. This medical evidence corroborates GZ and destroys the 'execution' lies that the race hustlers were spouting. It is critical to GZ making an Immunity motion, and if that fails to raising reasonable doubt.

The medical evidence-- apparently O'Mara considers it very important, remember he tweaked the State's bond hearing witness about it. One thing I do agree, if Corey's "investigators" refused to even look at GZ's offer of the medical reports as part of their "investigation"? Tar and feather her.

Ignatz, I agre with his conclusion that
((The question is whether the homosexual norm should stand on a par with the heterosexual bond. When any society reaches this point of challenge, it's worth pushing back.))
On the subject of the Time cover, I see it as a graphic metaphor of severe social regression. Once upon a time, mothers knew when it was appropriate to wean their children. A three year old child does not need the sustenance of breast milk. Common sense is trampled into the dust and the manifestation is far from a lovely picture of maternal love, it is imv a portrayal of abuse of responsiblity.

chubby-- I have only one thought about the Time cover - it's child porn.

ChaCo, DoT was not buttonholing members of your Buddhist temple and taunting them by calling them Japs. His comment related to holdovers from a very nasty war when no one thought that the simple abbreviations Jap and Nip were inherently racist or pejorative. I can't imagine Pappy Boyington radioing one of his fliers, saying that there was an honorable subject of the Japanese Empire, loyal to the Chrysanthemum Throne, respectful of his elders at ten o'clock, ready to shoot the Yank's ass off. Germans were called Huns, Jerries and Krauts during the war, and I don't see aggrieved German-Americans or Germans raising a stink about the use of those terms when referring to the two world wars. Bless you for being loyal to your friends and co-religionists, but please accept that few if any of us here would deliberately offend them, whether at your temple or in the neighborhood coffee shop.
Roughly twenty years ago, I rode into our county seat with my neighbors and their friends, Howard and Edna Hong. Howard, the distinguished biographer of Kierkegaard, was the guest speaker at our county historical society meeting, scheduled to talk about his Norwegian immigrant roots in the Willmar area. Howard was speculating on the current use of the huge state hospital on the north edge of Willmar as we drove by it, and he used the old popular term for the place, jag farm, meaning that when people went on a jag (got wildly drunk for a period), they would be sent there to sober up. Howard's wife and my neighbors were merciless in their denunciation of him, and he was so shaken by the experience that he had trouble with his presentation at the meeting.

IMO, the medical evidence is vital to GZ.
Having some injury is vital . . . the extent or severity really isn't. Because without injuries, Zimmerman's story doesn't really work (and the eyewitnesses become far less compelling and likely wrong). That said, only those who ignored the other evidence could possibly be surprised by the medical report(s).

"For anyone who doesn't want to read the article here is what Lott had to say about their personal interactions"
So these are interactions with Obama written about in Lotts new book(co-authored with Americans for Tax Reform’s Grover Norquist)called; “Debacle: Obama’s War on Jobs and Growth and What We can Do Now to Regain Our Future.”
ROFLMAO.......so is it safe to say that Lott is an objective character witness??

Totally agree, NK.
Is this DD person just another iteration of Professor Dana Ward of Pitzer College?

I hadn't thought about it that way, NK, but you have a point. I

NK, of course the injuries help his case enormously. The point is, the defense is available in the absence of any injury at all as a matter of law. Without the injuries he would have to rely on the eyewitness who saw him on his back and the grass stains the police saw on his back and head. Remember, at trial it would have to be disproved beyond a reasonable doubt.
No question that those photos and medical records will help corroborate his defense very powerfully.

--On the subject of the Time cover, I see it as a graphic metaphor of severe social regression.--
Clarice asked the other day how Time and Newsweek stay in business.
Yesterday at wifey's oncologist's office I picked up the very kiddy porn Time that we're discussing. I was astonished at how thin it was; less than 60 pages. My Weekly Reader used to be thicker than that.
And speaking of bullying, can you imagine the pounding that poor dope of a kid is gonna take when he hits the mean streets of the local schoolyard in a couple of years?
Of course mommy will will be on GMA decrying a society that allows such things to happen, never questioning her own idiocy of making her own kid look like an ass.

When I am in Japan, or talking with Japanese clients or Japanese-Americans, that's the way I refer to them. When I'm talking about WWII I tend to lapse into the language of MacArthur, Halsey and my father.

Dave-- sincere apologies-- how could I leave out Ma. from the roster of Blue State Hell.

Hey, "Jap" is better than "dirty little yellow bellies" as I heard on some WWII newsreel awhile back between movies on TCM, or maybe it was World at War.

"I can't read Tim carney"
In what way does that respond to Obama giving subsidies to private jet companies?
Obama gives money to private jet manufactures forcing the poorest members of society to give up what they can barely afford.
How can you look your self inthe mirror supporting such a cruel man?

Sure, let Zimmerman go free............but it's gonna cost you.
The more we can infuse controvery and outrage into this Zimmerman case the more we can cash in on the anger that rises from his now almost assured release.
Why simply accept this a run-of-the-mill self defence issue when there's so much more to gain from framing it as an example of societal and institutional racism.
Before you go into anaphlactic shock over how immoral such a stance is I can cite example after example of how the right constantly mischaracterizes an issue to pivot the country toward a legislative change or course of action(Iraq war).
Ironically, lives will be saved as a result of this Zimmerman boy's actions. And what does it matter,he got to fulfill his wish of killing a negro and he'll get to go free.
Posted by: dublindave | May 16, 2012 at 10:55 AM
"Jap"? It's impossible for us westerners to know for sure, because the east/west twains really DON'T meet, but a Japanese client whose father was a Major in the Imperial Army in China-Korea told me in a Stoli martini fueled discussion, that to him "Jap" is impolite, but not bigotted. Kind of like japanese calling Americans "yanks". He said bigotted would be calling Americans "Round eyed, hairy, butter smelling apes."

And they think everyone else is evil.
. . . to him "Jap" is impolite, but not bigotted.
One thing the PC push has done for me: it makes me considerably less concerned about labels. In general I try to use inoffensive language, but the bottom line is that it's my choice on word choice.

Did the "Japs" come up with the term "Gooks" for the Koreans ?

I heard--and used--some awfully colorful terms for Vietnamese that I would never use now.

UC was paying tribute to the mob to keep the peace, a typical Alinsky tactic. Barrry had the Tribe seal of approval so-- easy call for UC.
Sometimes I step back and marvel at the fact that this guy got elected President. It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine kept trying to fire this very creepy scary guy who didn't do any work, but whenever she called him into his office, she panicked and said "I'm going to have to . . . um, PROMOTE you!" (Yes, I know Seinfeld wasn't everyone's cup of tea here.)

The point is, the defense is available in the absence of any injury at all as a matter of law.
DoT I'm sure is right on the law, but given the fact that the state has actually pursued this farce of a case, I'd say GZ needs overwhelming evidence (effectively, proof of innocence, as opposed to reasonable doubt of guilt) to be sure he won't be convicted by some kangaroo court.

Considering the state-sanctioned barbarity with which Japanese soldiers treated their enemy POWs and conquered peoples in WW2, I really don't care if some Japanese are offended by the use of the word "Japs".
Posted by: fdcol63 | May 16, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Except fdcol most of the Japenese people you are likely to meet were born here and their families mistreated by our own govt even though they served with distinction against the "Japs" and every other enemy we've had since then.
Posted by: Clarice | May 16, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Clarice@11:24-- I think that's right. personally I don't use history as a justification to be 'impolite' today. don't forget history, but be polite. Actually, culturally that's quite Japanese.

That's because you're an idiot.
The Allied-forces were just as cruel,if not more so to their Japanese prisoners and Japanese citzenry in the occupied zones.
Were the fire bombing raids that targeted Japanese women, children and old people,in an effort to demoralize the men fighting over seas, barbaric?Where they state-sanctioned?
How bout dropping Atomic bombs on occupied cities AFTER the Japanese Emperor had agreed to an unconditional surrender?
You know an interesting trick American troops used to pull on their japanese prisoners,it involved breaking a coke bottle off in the anus and watching them slowly bleed to death.
The greatest generation?Perhaps, to some degree, war in inhumane across the board.
Posted by: dublindave | May 16, 2012 at 11:31 AM
JimmyK-- yes that's been my point about 'the case'. Corey sent away that Alexander woman for 20 years b/c the jury didn't believe her SD version of events-- so having empirical medical proof of TM beating GZ is vital to GZ, IMO.
Posted by: NK | May 16, 2012 at 11:31 AM
For anyone interested in history, the Emperor convinced the War Cabinet to surrender AFTER Nagasaki and even then the war cabinet was split and when they agreed to surrender, there was an Imperial Army officer coup that threated to carry on a guerilla war on the home islands.
Posted by: NK | May 16, 2012 at 11:34 AM
How bout dropping Atomic bombs on occupied cities AFTER the Japanese Emperor had agreed to an unconditional surrender?
Behold the status of History teachings in our schools today.
If the cities were occupied (presumably by our troops or those of our allies) why would we bomb them?
And how is it I've never read the horror stories of the US bombing its own occupation troops with nuclear weapons?
(to be precise, there WERE some US troops in Hiroshima. POWs.)

Of course you're right, but that hasn't prevented people from getting convicted on trumped up charges for political reasons. See Libby, Lewis "Scooter."
