Will this woman not realize her 15 minutes are up?

Sandra Fluke: The job market for graduates is getting better, you know

Via the Washington Free Beacon, this is enjoyable if only for the futility of the CNN host in trying to convince Fluke that the plural of “anecdote” is not “data,” only to be assured — repeatedly — that she’s talked to college grads from across the country. This is what they’re telling her, in casual conversation. So, you know, you can take it to the bank.

And that's just the first paragraph...

Clarice

OT,

Your daily bear Update:

First, the good news: Taquoka, an orphaned Grizzly cub from Kodiak, was shipped today to Sweden and should wake up tomorrow morning in their Zoo.

Now the bad news. Taquoka's partner, Shaguyik, another orphaned cub, (currently 300 lbs) who was supposed to be going to Sweden with him, had recently escaped from the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage, and just this afternoon was shot dead by a homeowner.

Local radio news says the shooter was under investigation to see if he legally killed the bear (ie) Stand Your Ground rules ala George Zimmerman. The linked ADN story says "the shooting was reported as necessary to protect life or property. Alaska Wildlife Troopers are investigating the shooting to see if that's true, a troopers spokeswoman said."

Ranger,

Tomorrow should be an exciting day for tweeters in Egypt. Will Tantawi apply Assad's proven methods of finishing the Arab Spring which President Obama ignited with his Cairo speech tomorrow as the mosques empty? Will he go with snipers first and then the tanks or will it be tanks right from the get go?

It's so wonderful to see a well thought out foreign policy statement continue to bear fruit. The Egyptian grave diggers will certainly appreciate the boost to their income.

Critics have said the Sept. 27 debate, to be moderated by Tom Brokaw and possibly aired on MSNBC, is a stacked deck against Brown.

Finally, Obama’s fifteen minutes have run out, but what can you expect from the guy who just doesn’t give us a break from his presence.

Ranger

Well Rick, the last 48 hours does show that there are some in the old guard who still know how to play the game.

Two days ago, they gave the Army the authority to arrest civilians again. Then yesterday, they invalidate the parliament.

They are supposed to hold round two of the presidential vote this weekend, but if the Brotherhood can't keep the mob under control, that will get scrubbed. And if the Brotherhood doesn't let the mob run wild and vent their anger, they will be seen as sellouts to the old guard.

biden-praises-arab-spring (at a high school commencement)

And the last lesson is that any one person can make a difference. If you look back at the beginning of the Arab Spring, that great democratic movement, it was started by an ordinary guy. Not some big government official, just a regular person like any of you or us here. He was upset with how things were going for him, and - he didn't even realize what an impact this was going to have, but he set himself on fire, and that one act literally touched the hearts of men and probably women across the Arab world. I mean, he was just at the end of his rope, and he didn't see any way out, but his death really made people pay attention.

Which is not - suicide is never a good idea, ok? I don't want to be a real downer up here, but it's important that you guys don't get the wrong idea. Don't think that if you're feeling like nobody's paying attention and you're hurting, that by killing yourself you can ignite some massive historical change for the better like this guy over in Algeria or wherever it was. That was a very exceptional and very unique set of circumstances, and you have a lot of better options here as young Americans.

So - again, it's a happy day and I don't want to dwell on this, it's not part of the scripted speech, but I'm literally speaking from the heart because it's an important subject: I want you to promise ol' Joe that if you are having some kind of trouble, talk to your parents, or a minister, or a guy at the mosque, or even come back to the school here and talk - well, I guess those guys will be out for the summer, huh? But talk to - tell you what. Sally? Could we get some note cards or something, and put the phone number for the Naval Observatory, and hand 'em out to the kids? (The Naval Observatory is what we call the Vice President's house, folks.) Or just - how about this. Come up on stage, and just scribble the number on the corner of the diplomas. You ok with that, Mr Principal? Ok, good. Now kids, now you'll have another person to talk to, because I'll have somebody on that phone day or night for you guys. Call over the summer, or while you're in college, whenever. I'm going to be in that house another four and a half years. Ha ha ha HA HA! No, but um, they don't change that number when a new administration comes in I don't think.

So to get back to the scripted part - and I can see my speechwriters, the look of relief on their face - you going to knock a few back tonight, huh Jack? But the point is there has never been a better time to be a young person, because one person can make a difference. Look at that Facebook guy in Egypt, who was such a symbol of hope, and who I'm pretty sure has been let out of prison over there. Or in Syria. Just many, many symbols of hope.

And don't feel left out because you're here in the States, because you can make a difference here too. I shouldn't drop into politics, but- let's just say that if you're interested in politics and you want to make a positive change in the way the country is headed - not so much in the way it's headed now, we've got things under control, but change from how bad things were back when you were in middle school, and maintain all the positive changes that I'm sure you learned all about in social studies or whatever - a word to the wise. Just, a word to the wise. That's all I'm going to say.

And there's a coordinator from Obama for America with a signup sheet in the back.

In fact - Larry, why don't you come up on stage, and you can get names and emails from the kids right before they pick up their diplomas?

 gus

Arab Spring. How'd that work out. Iran? Egypt? Syria? Libya??

Two interesting stories from the BBC this morning.

Mitt Romney's Mormon roots in northern England

This story gives interesting insight into Romney's Mormon family history. It says the Mormon Church was started in 1830, but that by 1837 the first Mormon Missionaries had arrived in England looking for converts, and that in essentially a low rent British mill-ghetto town they bumped into Mitt's great, great Grandad and Grandma, converted them, and then sent them on over to the US on a boat with young Brigham Young. Quite interesting, and surprisingly the story is basically snark-free.

daddy

2nd BBC story.

Children with older fathers and grandfathers 'live longer'

This story tells us that Brit scientists have a new theory concerning telomeres, a genetic bit that sits at the end of our chromosomes and appears to effect longevity. Theory says that as men age the telomeres of their sperm cells get longer, ergo become better able to pass on longevity traits than sperm produced by younger men. The theory then goes on to propose that the older an individuals father and grandfather were when they sired children, the probability is that their offspring will, in general, live longer than offspring of younger dads and grandads, due to inheriting longer telomeres.

Who knows, but an anecdotal look at my family would seem to initially support such a theory. We are long lived suckers, and can trace some of it back to a 72 year old great grandad, too old to fight in the Civil War, passing on his genetic stuff to a much younger 2nd cousin, and producing my 101 year old late granny.

Anyhow, an interesting idea. Wonder if my wife would consider it appropriate for me to engage in some scientific research, perhaps say, with Miss New Zealand?

Clarice

bgates, no one does it better.

The description of the early church in England sounds so much like what was going on a hundred or so years earlier with the Quakers. They were so persecuted for leaving the Church of England, farms and homes confiscated, beatings, arrests, that my own immigrant ancestor was put on a ship in 1726 by his parents at age 14, along with his elder brother, 18, and his youngest sister, age 8, and sent to America for their safety and to be under the care of an aunt and uncle who had escaped a few years earlier.

Both those of the Society of Friends and those of the Latter Day Saints must have been very devout believers because the early years of membership were more than risky. And it didn't get much better once they were in America for the LDS. Quakers fared better thanks to William Penn, a Quaker convert, and his large land holdings of what is now Pennsylvania and Delaware. However, their practice of disowning anyone who married out or violated their idea of a simple, plain life decimated their membership roles within a two or three generations. Mormons, OTOH, were not so strict and marrying out was not grounds for excommunication so their numbers grew.

BR

GMAX, the cheating is being investigated in Racine, nobody is looking at Milwaukee or Madison (besides Holder's DOJ kept Milwaukee "clean"). The key is that Racine was the one place where cheating could gain something- control of a senate that is not / will not be in session.

Here is an old O'Keefe video of voter fraud in a New Jersey election. The machines were kept by the unions.

"The two voting machines, Dibrofsky said, "were already locked, loaded, and voted," by which he meant that the voting machines already had simulated vote tallies on them, ready to be printed out at the end of the day."

Number of official voting machines for a city, storage of machines,...it should all be monitored.

Speaking of Presidential quotes-- who would have thought Woodrow Wilson's religious values would be closest to my personal values. I have seen all my life the arguments against it without ever having been moved by them. ... [N]ever for a moment have I had one doubt about my religious beliefs. There are people who believe only so far as they understand -- that seems to me presumptuous and sets their understanding as the standard of the Universe. ... I am sorry for such people."

And you know what happens to liabilities in an election year.

Those were two extremely interesting stories from the BBC.

I have already informed Frederick that his going to live to be 100 or more:)

My English cousin and my Australian cousin have been researching our family history now for over 10 years and have it down pat. We recently decided to look into a branch located in Utah, Arizona and California. They are Mormon and two of their offspring werer a famous 1950's Pro Football player and a equally famous Western/Cowboy artist. Traced them back to New York where they had emigrated from England where they were converted by Mormon missionaries.

I have passed that BBC link on the cousins just in case they missed reading it or hearing about on BBC.

BTW, the Preston North End football team is nicknamed after my family surname:)
