The fact remains that there ARE preconditions to the success of a business -- private property, the rule of law, free enterprise, stable governments, strong defense. Obama is right about that.

IF this is all Obama meant, then it is a triviality that is not worth mentioning. Granted, almost anything Obama says that isn't a lie is a triviality not worth mentioning, but in this case it takes great effort and several ounces of fairy dust to believe that that is ALL he was saying. And by "triviality" I mean, no one claims otherwise, so it is essentially meaningless to claim that he is "right about that."

Chubby

((If he's so good at balancing the budget why will not a single member of his own party vote for his proposed budgets? what am I missing?))

as I see it, not one of the whole pack of them wants a budget. They are gaming the system, because they "can" and all having a big laugh about it.

DoT brought up the original idea as a case of someone taking a dumb risk, and deservedly failing. But then another guy came by, paid $2,500, and...

Balloon Boy saucer turned into trading cards

The Allen & Ginter Relics set costs around $3 a pack at mass retailers, but dozens of individual balloon boy cards have sprung up on Ebay, with sellers seeking anywhere from 99 cents to $49.99 for the Mylar-adorned cards.

boatbuilder

As a volunter unpaid Obama Campaign consultant, it is my recommendation that he now follow this brilliant ad up with ads making perfectly clear that: a)he was never at the church when Reverend Wright (who was not his "mentor") said all those horrible anti-American things; and b) he never called his grandmother a "typical white person."

When did Obama say that?

What I find sad and disgusting lyle, is that anyone feels the need to declare "I am not a racist" with their disfavor of Obama. Alinsky could not have planned it better.

Theo

jimmyk --

I basically agree with you. What he said was not wrong, but so axiomatic as to be close to meaningless.

But I think it is useful to recognize that he was not wrong and in truth no one truly succeeds in building a business all by themselves. However, that does not mean that all success in business is due to some collective "we" that can take credit (and the profits) from that enterprise.

Henry Ford did not invent the automobile and Bill Gates did not invent the computer. They benefitted from the contributions of others who came before. But that does not mean that Ford and Gates and so many others did not make major contributions to life and society for which they should be greatly rewarded.

Gallup:

Thirty-nine percent of Democrats say they are more enthusiastic about voting than usual, down from the summers of 2004 (68%) and 2008 (61%). Republicans (51%) are more enthusiastic than in 2008 (35%) but the same as in 2004 (51%).

No wonder the Pinhead Troika is panicking.

Chubby

the whole disagreement=racism is merchandise that they are pushing hard, but outside the market they already have, no one else is buying

jimmyk

Theo, there was an "if" in my statement. I agree with the others here that he did not say that. You are reading between the lines and trying to project something unarguable onto his words. My point was even if you do that, all you get is a triviality. But that was not the plain meaning of his words.

****BREAKING NEWS******DONALD TRUMP STARTS MIXING MORTAR TO BUILD HIS NEW CASINO******

In what many are describing as just another day in the life of Tycoon and television celebrity, Donald Trump, the self made Millionaire began mixing the mortar for the foundation of his new casino which he plans to build himself-with no help whatsoever. The project is expected to take 176 years to complete and cost just over 18 trillion dollars.

OT, somebody on one of these threads posted the Pitzer putz' address. I googled it, and looked at street view. I can't believe that a college professor who fancies himself an anarchist could live in such a mundane boring cookie cutter neighborhood. The funny thing is that the Google camera took a picture of what appear to be Mexican workers working on the property. Couldn't he do better than to live in a tract home. I'm singing Pete Seeger's Little Boxes to myself. Ben, tell Pitzer to give you a cooler home to live in. Bourgeois, man.

NK, I had two daughters who played serious soccer, one at BU. The notion of "play on" always confused me and may have caused me to utter vituperation.

How fun for you, however, to be involved with it. I prefer women's soccer to most NFL games. It is the only time I permit myself to feel any kindness toward UNC.

What the hell does Trump have to do with Romney's tax returns?

For that matter, what the hell does Obama's obsession with his own "you didn't build that" remark have to do with Romney's tax returns?

Poor Obama fell victim to his own yelling of "look squirrel!"

FIFA Laws? they are actually well thought out and make common sense. The Referees' application? uneven.

henry

Be fare NK, the referees' application is closer to random than uneven. ;)

NK

Dear Henry-- we were having a right friendly soccer conversation before you interrupted with the typical men's player observation about refs. I never played the game, I got involved when my son turned out to be a good player, and after refereeing for a few years and being promoted to higher level games I learned that you guys play differently than any another sport-- you give a running commentary to the ref during the game! And guys are far worse than ladies-- at least directly at the refs, I would hate to hear what the ladies say behind our backs. Soccer players bitch and moan ceaselessly, it's unbelievable. Even St Henry of Wisc probably did it back in the day. One plus from the players complaining-- I can swear in portuguese, spanish, greek, Italian and Albanian.

lyle

Alinsky could not have planned it better.

Preach it, sister. The commies planned something like this years ago and along came BOzo. Their perfect candidate. It will be interesting to see if the Dem party can survive this fraud and his handlers. Someone show me a sane Dem right now.

As for conversation with referees, it was more fun to agree with my opponent that I actually fouled him (true about half the time) and the ref effed up than complain when I got called for anything.

MelR-- than you would love my favorite young referee who does College and USL games (he's 24 now.) Look at these bastards - "The gay rights group Equality Illinois is launching a campaign against Chick-Fil-A – petitioning universities and lawmakers to evict the fast food restaurant from their campuses and planning a “kiss-in” campaign by gay and lesbian couples outside Chick-Fil-A restaurants."

and this - "The campaign by the group comes just after Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno (1st) announced plans to block efforts by Chick-Fil-A to open a second Chicago restaurant, because the company’s president vocally opposes same-sex marriage."

How is this not discrimination? Are we allowed to oppose changing the definition of marriage?

matt

GK's are usually pretty intense.

NK, I pray we don't get a clean sweep, because then the moderate Repubs will probably do more stupid shit and the Dems play that like a violin.

We need an environment where the squishes and the obstructionists are marginalized, whether by events, which I believe may happen, or by some chance miracle that people actually come to their senses.

I had a discussion the other day with a left friend who was convinced that we should ban automatic weapons until I told him that they have been banned to the greatest extent since the 30's.

There is no arguing with the statist mentality and until Europe falls and crony capitalism is squashed and the meatheads realize that Western Civ triumphed on its merits instead of some phony capitalist/imperialist oppression of the masses.

These are same buffoons who watched the Soviet Empire collapse and China go mercantilist and still don't get the message that communitarianism works well at a Benedictine monastery only because it is unequivocal and devoted to the greater glory of God and works nowhere else for the lack thereof.

Wisconsin state Dem quits caucus, threatens to undermine recall gains

What I don't get is this:

Republican state Sen. Rich Zipperer is expected next month to become GOP Gov. Scott Walker’s deputy chief of staff, which would still give Democrats a 16-15-1 majority if Cullen decides to become an independent. At least until Zipperer's seat is filled.
Does Zipperer's replacement get appointed by Walker?
NK

MelR-- PROTECT THE KEEPER (Goalie)!!! the harsh discipline goes against the ATTACKING player-- Keepers are of course permitted to maintain order by protecting the ball with shoulder charges and high elbows. The most important decision I ever made was a U18 College recruiter Tourney during Thanksgiving involving a Coastal Maine Club Keeper knocking out cold a Westchester FC striker on a 50/50 ball just ourside the area. I was able to make the right decision because it took 2-3 minutes to get the Westchester kid back on his feet, so I had time to think it through and consult with the ARs. The Keeper stayed on with a caution-- much to the disbelief of the Westchester FC coach.

Enlightened

"The gay rights group Equality Illinois is launching a campaign against Chick-Fil-A – petitioning universities and lawmakers to evict the fast food restaurant from their campuses and planning a “kiss-in” campaign by gay and lesbian couples outside Chick-Fil-A restaurants."

Well, the Cathy's are Christian. I'm sure they will pray for these lost souls, and would certainly never resort to the same bullying tactics. I do hope that Chik-fil-A does not back down and allow 2% of the population to dictate how they do business.

I'm sure these gays and lesbians have the employees, and their families, and their families well being in mind when they petition to close them down, and force them out of work in this economy.

As usual, they think of themselves only. Another group of detestable whining jackasses.

GMAX

None of my athletes were allowed to play goalie, put your dental work on the level where kicks are routine required a dental insurance policy beyond what I could put in place. Playing keeper is absolutely for the insane amongst us.

lyle

I told him that they have been banned to the greatest extent since the 30's.

Did he shriek like a vampire exposed to sunlight? Facts should have that effect on lefties. Sadly, they rarely do.

henry

Ext, Zipperer's seat is up for election in November anyway. An R will win for sure (I have no idea who is running). His absence, like the current Dem majority makes no difference because the senate will not convene again until January.

NK

Henry-- Zipperer? the man's name is actually Zipperer?

GMAX

I pray we don't get a clean sweep,

Well then I pray fervently (and more frequently) that your prayers not be answered. The only way we get to a sane budget and start making the Fed Govt live within the means we can afford, is for there not to be a squish or two that must be placated to pass reform. We need a strong yank on the reins, not a small and ever so gentle course correction.

If I cancel your prayer out, then it will be what is now predestined, a massacre for the Donks. Hide and watch.

henry

NK, that is the first I've heard of a Keeper getting called for that, let alone booked. I finally stopped playing after waking up one morning to find I was in the penalty area after getting my clock cleaned while scoring one afternoon. Well done!

and yes, Zipperer (R-Pewaukee), or as his predecessor calls him "The Upgrade".

NK

Gmax @ 4:27. I agree with that. Unless the spending is drastically reduced and the Obamacare Medicaid entitlement repealed, the USA is Greece in 5 years or less.

Volokh (via Insty): No Building Permits for Opponent of Same-Sex Marriage

[Chicago Alderman] Proco “Joe” Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A’s effort to build its second Chicago store … following company President Dan Cathy’s remarks last week that he was “guilty as charged” for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman….
In Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino reportedly took a similar view:
Mayor Thomas M. Menino is vowing to block Chick-fil-A from bringing its Southern-fried fast-food empire to Boston … after the family-owned firm’s president suggested gay marriage is “inviting God’s judgment on our nation.”
But denying a private business permits because of such speech by its owner is a blatant First Amendment violation. Even when it comes to government contracting — where the government is choosing how to spend government money — the government generally may not discriminate based on the contractor’s speech, see Board of County Commissioners v. Umbehr (1996). It is even clearer that the government may not make decisions about how people will be allowed to use their own property based on the speaker’s past speech.

Hello to all from sunny Key Biscayne, Miami:)

Nice little drive down after dropping off the puppies with our vet who has a pet hotel for their comfort while we are gone. Going to the Chelsea v. AC Milan game on Saturday but tonight we are having old friends for dinner at Jose Andres new restaurant The Bazzar in SoBe (actually 17th and Collins. Funny how they keep extending SoBe further north. Pretty soon it will be in Bal Harbor.

Now Frederick wants to go to the pool but I am making him recite his multiplication tables first. Not a particularly happy camper at the moment. Tomorrow we are going to try a new Italian from the Pub-Belly folks called Macchialinda over on the Beach. Supposed to have the best antipasti in town.

narciso, are in Miami or just above it?

NK

Henry-- FYI, the caution on the Keeper was for deliberately handling the ball outside the area. The 2-fisted punch to the Attacker's jaw? fair play! it was a 50-50 Ball and the Keeper fisted it away before the Attacker got to the ball. The Westchester coach was not impressed with my decision.

NK

JiB-- enjoy the Chelsea-FC Milan match. This saturday the family and I will be in Baltimore seeing Liverpool-Tottenham @100 pm-- that will be played at a walk in 90 degree heat.

Dick Morris says that 90% of the remaining gap will break toward Romney. So that would make it 55-45 Romney if all holds equal. I imagine after the convention when everyone gets to hear Romneys incredible story that it will start showing in the polls especially when they start using likely rather than registered votes in those polls. Read an incredible article today about how he saved the Olympics by slashing all unnecessary expenses even charging for Pizza slices during meetings and even though Coke donated product he still have everyone pay for their drinks. He cut everything that was not a must do completely out and took the Olympics from the fiscal hole it was in to a $166 million surplus. Cannot wait to see what he can do with our budget!

NK,

LIke the NFL goes to London - we should have a EPL game here once and a while. Even if it is NYC or DC, the EPL should do it during their season, either early (the fall) or later (the spring). After all, both Liverpool and Manchester are American owned now. When we lived in London we became big Chelsea fans, although my family and its businesses were Tottenham sponsors since their formation. To this day, my cousins are big time season ticket holders for The Spurs. Frederick's godfather, on the other hand is a season ticket holder for Chelsea.

BTW, great little thread here on soccer. Mel even looks like a goalie - who'd have known:)

Coming down to Miami we had Boortz and Rush on. Boortz read the Iowahawk piece on the Genesis parody. Frederick got upset that someone would parody God:) Altar boys!

Then Rush spent 3 hours "crucifying" the NBC/WSJ poll which was skewed by 11% to represent (to their biased minds) what the Dem v. Rep turnout will be in November 46 to 35! Then he laid into Obama and I mean he was right on top of him like Trayvon on George. Covering his mouth, banging his head, punching his nose, beating the hell out of him. But Barry had no gun.

The Saints are back in the EPL so I can't actively support the Hotspur.

http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/cities-move-to-ban-chick-fil-a-supporters-launch-day-of-support.html

The company’s position on traditional marriage notwithstanding, threats to ban the company have drawn fire from editorial pages across the nation.

The Los Angeles Times condemned the decision, calling it far more troubling than Chick-fil-A’s support of traditional marriage.

“Public officials have a responsibility to carry out their ministerial tasks fairly and evenhandedly – and to uphold the principle of free speech – whether or not they like a business executive’s social or political stances,” the Times opined.

The Boston Globe wondered “which part of the First Amendment does Menino not understand? A business owner’s political or religious beliefs should not be a test for the worthiness of his or her application for a business license.

Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin said “Boston’s Founding Fathers must be steaming in their graves.”

“When an elected public official wields the club of government against a Christian business in the name of “tolerance,” it’s not harmless kid stuff,” Malkin wrote. “It’s chilling.”

Meanwhile, thousands of Christians are mobilizing efforts to support Chick-fil-A – led by Fox News Channel host and former Ark. Governor Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee has declared August 1st as Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.

“Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, August 1,” Huckabee said.

Huckabee said the company has come under attack from militant homosexuals and is being “smeared by vicious hate speech and intolerant bigotry from the left.”

“The militant homosexual advocates have launched an all out assault on Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A,” he said. “The attempts to hurt or destroy Chick-fil-A are nothing short of economic bullying.”

Donald Wildmon, the founder of the American Family Association, is backing Huckabee’s efforts saying he hoped it would generate the largest one-day sales in the company’s history.

“I have been incensed at the vitriolic assaults on the Chick-fil-A company,” Wildmon wrote in an email. “It’s a great American story that is being smeared by vicious hate speech and intolerant bigotry from the left.”

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, was especially disturbed by the actions of Boston’s mayor.

“This is really outrageous when you see this is the train that follows same sex marriage,” Perkins told Fox News. “This idea of the loss of religious freedom – the freedom of speech — and it’s on perfect display in Boston with the intolerance of this mayor.”

Perkins noted that Americans have overwhelmingly endorsed the traditional definition of marriage – 32 times in 32 states.

“Chick-fil-A is in the mainstream, he said. “The mayor of Boston is in the minority.”

“It’s about forcing Americans who do not agree with this agenda to comply and if a business dare step outside of the PC lines they will be attacked just as we are seeing Chick-fil-A being attacked,” Perkins added.

Sue @ 4:12....You may have a point, however the longer this debate continues over Barry's BC authenticity, the more I lean towards his having a father not even mentioned on the BC. Possibly he was born in Indonesia or maybe Canada (to explain the Hawaiian hospital refusing to produce his birth record). Vancouver isn't that far from Seattle, and we know Stanley Ann was in Washington State shortly after Barry's birth. That is, if Barry's BC birth date is correct. ;)

Since Barry is half black, I'm curious about the identity of his real father. Did the Dunham family use Obama Senior (and did Obama Senior use the Dunhams to enhance his immigration status) in an attempt to protect FMD?
