The problem is that most people listen to what Romney actually said and react, "Gaffe? Where is the gaffe?"

You are exactly right, Sara. Looking around at some videos...the MFM just look like they have gone insane.

DOT: Re: first page of tax return.

Would that work?

I have read that Romney's returns go from 100s to over a thousand pages long. Do you really think the idiots that are calling for the release of more returns are familiar with anything but the short form?

The whole thing is ridiculous. All his financial disclosures are available online going back to 2006, he will have released 2 full years of returns before the election, he gives millions to charity every single year, and pays millions in taxes, and, IMHO, is the most honest person ever to run for public office. Harry Reid is a real piece of work scumbag.

Ted Cruz was reported to be "excited" as staffers read results from different counties. Early returns show him in the lead over David Dewhurst.

WFAA blog ( which of course means nothing ).

22,5K with 10.5% of precincts in. I have no idea where the vote are in and where they are outstanding which could be significant. Dewhurst ran strong in the primary in rural counties.

The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors.

Typical. We are so tolerant, we'll prove it, by being the most intolerant.

Oh well, CFA stopped handing out "unsafe" Muppet toys and now gives out a bear book.

39K with 12.5% in. Big jump up. There has not been a refresh update that has had Dewhurst cutting the lead.

40.5K with 14.7% trend continues

I have been working myself up for a week now into a real mad.

It is time we stop talking about the whole CFA flap without taking offense. And I am offended by the bigots on the left. Religious bigots!!! These are evil people and they deserve to be called out for that evil. This is America. There is no room in America for this type of bigotry. Democrats are racists (everything is about race to them, they can't get past the color of someone's skin), they are raging anti-Semites, and now their religious bigotry is also front and center. The intolerance, bigotry, racism, sexism, ageism, and anti-Semitism of the left is intolerable, unAmerican, unpatriotic, and downright offensive. Besides, being stupid commie whiners.

44K with 19.5% reported.

The Associated Press calls Ted Cruz the winner in his GOP U..S. Senate runoff against David Dewhurst. The latest vote total gives Cruz 53 percent of the vote with 16 percent of precincts reporting. - AP

(Another) Barbara

Thanks so much for the link to the TX results, GMax. Here I am, sitting in Hawaii at 3:30 in the afternoon, gnawing my fingernails over a primary election in Texas. Ain't life grand?!

"Al Czervik: Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?

Al Czervik: Oh, it looks good on you though."

From the mind of Brian Doyle-Murray.

Your welcome.

Can we get some Washington DC pundits to tell us about the death of the Tea Party. No one, including me, originally gave anyone a prayer against the sitting Lt Governor. If anyone spins this as anything other than a Tea Party engineered win, they are stupid or lying. This is almost as big as Mike Lee taking out a sitting Senator.

But that would be a day ending in y, eh Gmax;

@iowahawkblog: “If there’s anything the American public won’t abide, it’s someone who insults screaming reporters and Palestinians.

Here ya' go and there are more of us than of them:

In a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, most 65-and-older seniors support Romney while young adults under 30 back Obama by almost 2-1. The 18-percentage-point difference in their presidential choices is one of the electorate’s biggest demographic divides, and it helps define campaign strategies for both sides.

The enthusiasm of the Millennial Generation for Obama, who is now 50, fueled his election victory four years ago. Though still backing him, younger voters have lost some of their ardor while seniors have become significantly more engaged than in 2008 on behalf of the 65-year-old Romney — and they are much more likely to vote. At stake in this divide is not only the presidency but also the country’s policy direction — shaping the debate on Social Security and Medicare spending, the need to invest in education and the priority placed on environment.

Ain't life grand?!

Indeed, it is, (A)Barbara, indeed it is!

On to November!

Well Kim and Melinda- someone posted me on curry's site about half an hour ago. It appears that interdisciplinary is about to be appreciated as a shield and not just a sword.

Amen to that. It was never about temps unless they supported ideology.

Ted Cruz was outspent 3-1 in his campaign to become the Republican U.S. Senate nominee, but his grass roots efforts appear to be paying off as the AP has declared him to be the winner over David Dewhurst. Were he to win in the fall election against Democratic challenger Paul Sadler,Cruz would become the first Latino senator from Texas.

Dont look for that to be reported, unless its as a white hispanic.

Sara and Janet,

I just watched a rerun of that French24 segment on "Gaffe-prone Romney", and what I noticed is that there was no video or recitation of these supposed gaffe's at all. It was presented to the viewers as a given fact that Romney had made gaffes on this Tour, and the in studio yackers were then supposed to cluck about what a dummy Mitt was by offending everyone with these unspecified gaffes.

Like you guys I would have thought that if these "gaffe's" were so egregious, then the Media would love nothing better than to play them as soundbites non-stop to illustrate Romney's stupidity. That they are not playing them is an indication of the phoniness of the charge.

while young adults under 30 back Obama by almost 2-1...

No wonder 46% of them can't find work. (via Insty...)

"The Associated Press calls Ted Cruz the winner"

Yay, GMax. Thanks for that.

Somebody better think twice before snubbing you know who at the Convention.

It is just too difficult to call Romney's words a gaffe if they are quoted. In that sense, Obama is superior. His actual words are gaffes.

And, he's a liar.

I would say, it's Coors, but it's not even near beer;

Double post. I have no idea. Oh, well, no extra charge. Put it in the trash from the basement tapes.

Burgess is a patriot and a good man. He was my congressman until they changed the districts.

Thanks for posting that link Narciso.

It offered this:

"If some of Romney’s gaffes appeared to provoke outrage in the British press, others seemed to provide comic relief—such as when Romney declared that he had enjoyed his time looking out of the “backside” (rather than the back garden) of 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British prime minister.

It may have been an innocent slip of the tongue, but by that point much of the US press was also starting to wince."

France24 is delusional. (and they can kiss my "backgarden" while they're at it.

That is supposedly a gaffe worthy of making US Reporters wince? Methinks gaffe's should be made of sterner stuff.

Hell, if Obama had said the same they'd say it proved he deserved the Nobel Prize.

Is it just me or does this look like what Nigel was asking for as a prop in Spinal Tap for the Leprechauns to dance around?

Agreed on the earlier point, daddy, Cheney, from his previous bout backing Kay Bailey, Grayson (Rand's opponents) among others, should have known better.

With right at 50% of precincts in, Cruz has climbed up to 55% of the vote. He beat the sitting Lt Governor ( who as the Head of the State Senate is widely regarded as the most powerful man in the state) by 10%! That is verging on a blowout.

Dingy Harry would never peek under the covers and look at Mitt's tax returns, would he?

But Slumlord ValJar would have "sent someone" without a doubt.

This is a timely law suit, because someone on the wrong team is going to slip and give out a particular detail known only to the Romney's and the IRS, and it ain't going to be Mitt.

Play on. And they're going to try something "legal", the further they flail.

At least it isn't Jared Bernstein, PhD of Social Welfare. (One whom I would gladly "discuss" economics with, since he was "Slow Joe's" "Chief Economist", I kid you not.)

G'night all.

Don't worry, the author of that NYT piece also wants to do away with high school geometry, trig and calculus. After all, only 1.5% of college degrees were in mathematics.
Finally! Something I'm expert at! As anyone who has taken college math knows, it is very different than high school math. And my math grad student friends said that grad school math is as far away from college math as college math is from high school math. But, anyway, the number of college math majors is a moronic non sequitor when discussing high school math.

No, the problem is that only about 10% of college graduates have taken high school math -- the gen-ed requirement math at all but the most excellent colleges is jr-high math. And unless an education major has a minor or double-major in math or science, all they take is gen-ed. At this point we have a chicken-and-egg problem -- where do we find teachers to teach high school math when 95% of all high school teachers have never taken high school math?

Has the Ewok been informed of this? Earlier in the day he seemed primed for a massive case of the vapours over the "gaffe"; to the point where Malor was looking for fainting couches.

Never got called to a courtroom, Clarice. They called up one group of a few dozen around 10:30, then let the rest of us go at 2:30.

Nice day. Travelled over and back via the commuter ferry; short walk to the courthouse on the other side.

I don't know about Malor, but he seemed reasonably sensible today,

I mean about the Ewok, Doc Zero, does rub it in, just a might bit;

Danube of Thought

"I have read that Romney's returns go from 100s to over a thousand pages long."

I'm sure they do, Sara. I used to have returns that were 100 pages or so, and extraordinarily complex--absolutely incomprehensible to me. But no matter how long and complex they are, the tax paid is always right there up front on the Form 1040. Releasing that would shut down forever this business about "maybe he didn't pay any taxes at all."

If the banshees kept howling for more after that, I think that would be a nice time to tell them to shove it.

Captain Hate

he seemed reasonably sensible today,

I sit corrected. I initially saw that he led with an "Eff me" and figured massive eeyorisms followed but I'm pleased to report that I was mistaken. I thereby withdraw any criticism of massive overreacting to a big fat nothingburger until the next time it *really* happens.

Not gone, just remote.

That's disappointing.

He'll be front and center Friday AM, on CNBC, with Diane Swonk in their "even-handed" analysis of the unemployment figures.

Are the numbers going to be "unexpected"? Can't quite make a read on it. In my slice of heaven, I've noticed some businesses closing and traffic seems lighter in places I go, but I'm also seeing new businesses open up. What is the concensus estimate?

It may have been an innocent slip of the tongue

Looks like mon-sewer Froggy LeGaffe is unaware that in this country, to "slip the tongue" means to insert one's tongue into another's mouth during what was expected to be a closed-mouth kiss on the lips, and could hardly be more innocent.

I award this statement three Gaffes, two Pinnochios, and a "Fuck you you fucking French fascist-loving fucks".

Culture Does Matter
By Mitt Romney (@NRO)

During my recent trip to Israel, I had suggested that the choices a society makes about its culture play a role in creating prosperity, and that the significant disparity between Israeli and Palestinian living standards was powerfully influenced by it. In some quarters, that comment became the subject of controversy.

But what exactly accounts for prosperity if not culture? In the case of the United States, it is a particular kind of culture that has made us the greatest economic power in the history of the earth. Many significant features come to mind: our work ethic, our appreciation for education, our willingness to take risks, our commitment to honor and oath, our family orientation, our devotion to a purpose greater than ourselves, our patriotism. But one feature of our culture that propels the American economy stands out above all others: freedom. The American economy is fueled by freedom. Free people and their free enterprises are what drive our economic vitality. ...More

Excellent link Sara.

If he keeps this up I may just get sMitten with the man.

That was a pretty good essay by Romney.

Some comedians are finally beginning to describe the elephant in the room of Politically Correct standup comedy.

In a clip of John Lovitz and Dana Carvey discussing the reticence of comedians to criticize Obama we get this:

Carvey: Put it this way John, if you think of us growing up in Vietnam and Watergate and Nixon, one of the big anthems of our generation was "Question Authority." Right now the Authority happens to be President Obama. So it's a natural thing for a comedian, we're supposed to tear down the people in power no matter who they are, and that's the people we make fun of. We take potshots at the King or the President. This is in our DNA. It's what we're supposed to do, so to not do it seems kinda'..it's not healthy for America."

Lovitz chips in about old comedian Mort Sahl years back "getting in trouble for making fun of Kennedy, and that really killed his career."

Carvey responds that Mort Sahl lives nearby and they hang out at a nearby comedy club, and he says of Mort Sahl "he bemoans the fact that he'll see dozens and dozens and dozens of comedians still doing Sarah Palin jokes, or Rick Santorum jokes, and not one Obama joke. So this is Mort Sahl from the 50's kind of going "What Happened?"

It's not a great clip and Lovitz is still doing apologias as a result of the criticism he's taken for hitting Obama, but it's nice to know that Carvey and others at least recognize the problem and aren't afraid to mention it. Keep it up boys.

Late Night at The Improv:

Thinking about my above Comedian post it strikes me that a good comedian could do a great routine on the fact of the obvious fear of comedians to criticize Obama.

He could start with a bit on the false sort of reasoning they have to tell themselves for why they aren't criticizing Obama (ie) "Yeah there's nothing funny about him or his ears or how he throws a baseball like a girl or how he butchers the language ("Corpseman, Corpseman, can we get a Corpseman over here.) "

Then do a bit on how they're not afraid of career retaliation if they do criticize him "because Obama is obviously a nice guy.
A really nice guy.
A really, really, really nice guy, and if you don't believe it Axelrod will put Ann Romney's horses head in your bed to convince you what a nice guy Barack is."
And if you don't believe that just go ask Joe the Plumber. Is his IRS audit over yet?"

And Intelligent? Why don't get me started. The only reason Obama's not releasing his College transcripts is because he doesn't want to shame his opponents by revealing how much smarter he was than them in college.

Smart enough to make Chris Mathews wet his pants.
Smart enough to make David Brooks turn gay over his pants.
Smart enough to make Michael Beschloss make Don Imus sound like a genius.

Why he's so smart that even when he doesn't know anything about anything he knows the Harvard Police acted stupid.

And he reads Andrew Sullivan...told you he was smart.

(Sounding like George Stephanopolus---"Not you're Muslim Faith mister President, you're Christian faith, you're Christian Faith!"

(Mimicking Obama's voice: "Oh, right George, My Christian Faith, my Christian Faith. Got it. And that's also why I'm the best friend Israel's got over there in their capitol of Tel Aviv, my Musli...my Christian Faith."

And Obama loves family values, yessiree-bob, loves them Family values. Stuff like preventing teen pregnancy, and Marriage is between a Man and a Woman and...Oh,,,what's that? Now he's into marriage between a Man and a Man? So now it's Okay to filet the chick from the marriage?

Well allrighty-then. So as I was saying, he's into them Family Values. Solid as a rock on 'em. Looking out for the little man he is, the one's not clinging to guns (unless it's member of the New Black Panther Party and they're sitting in the doorway of a Voting Precinct clinging to AK-47's---that's okay) but other than that it's bitter to cling.

And Religion, clinging to religion. "Why the sweetest sound I ever heard as a kid was the Prayer call at 5 AM to come get your welfare checks in Kenya. Or was it Indonesia? Hell I don't know, Quick, pass me one of my autobiographies so I can find out which one it was." (Pretending to thumb thru the pages. "Aw Hell, even in Bali I never could make it thru all them pages, so I'll just look on the back flap to see where that secretary from 20 years ago misremembered my bio."

(Finding the back flap) Kenya! Could'a fooled me. I had no idea Frank Marshall Davis was into intercontinental Railroads way back then." Wonder what it says on my Birth Certificate? (Pantomines Obama reaching into his pocket as if he's going to pull out his Birth Certificate, but catches himself before he does, and says to the audience "You didn't think I was actually gonna' let anyone see it, did you?"

And did I mention "Headwinds?"

Oh well. Guess there just isn't much material for a comedian to work with regarding Obama. Guess I better keep my day job at the Coal Fired Power Plant?

Say what? I'm laid off?
Bummer, but Pelosi sez my foodstamps will boost the economy! Glad to do my part, but of course I couldn't a done it without you Barack.

CHICAGO -- Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday proposed a statewide ban on assault weapons, a move that would face big hurdles in Illinois despite renewed nationwide debate over the issue.

The Chicago Democrat used his amendatory veto power to call for changes in a bill related to in-state ammunition sales.

"Banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines will make Illinois a safer place to live," he said in a letter to members of the General Assembly. "There is no place in the State of Illinois for weapons designed to rapidly fire at human targets at close range."

(on a side note, this is basically the same ban that is already in place in Chicago and we know how well that has worked to stop crime)

In other news, I saw Sarah Palin in an ad endorsing Sarah Steelman for Senate (MO) yesterday. (Todd Akin was endorsed earlier by Mike Huckabee.)

Businessman John Brunner still showing good numbers in the polls and continues to send me some direct mail campaign thing or other every day (vs. grand total of nothing from the other candidates at all).

The MO Primary is next Tuesday (8/7). I know nothing at all about the other 5 Senate candidates, or any of the 4 Candidates for governor, or about 2 of the 4 candidates for Lt. Gov, or any of the 3 candidates for SOS etc. The "good" news is I don't have to spend time researching any county, local, or circuit court/judge candidates because they are all on the Democratic party ballot.

How stupid are tea partiers? Last night we found out. In the polling booth, they didn't know that Ted Cruz's last name was Latino. It must have struck them as a good German Protestant name rhyming with "clutz." Meanwhile "Dewhurst" sounded vaguely black to enough of them, and so we get the result.

You could hear their cries of shock and outrage when Cruz finally appeared and approached the mic last night.

Houston Cronicle (7/29)

[The phone rang before sunrise. It woke Craig Patty, owner of a tiny North Texas trucking company, to vexing news about Truck 793 - a big red semi supposedly getting repairs in Houston.

"Your driver was shot in your truck," said the caller, a business colleague. "Your truck was loaded with marijuana. He was shot eight times while sitting in the cab. Do you know anything about your driver hauling marijuana?"

"What did you say?" Patty recalled asking. "Could you please repeat that?"

Commandeered by one of his drivers, who was secretly working with federal agents, the truck had been hauling marijuana from the border as part of an undercover operation. And without Patty's knowledge, the Drug Enforcement Administration was paying his driver, Lawrence Chapa, to use the truck to bust traffickers.

At least 17 hours before that early morning phone call, Chapa was shot dead in front of more than a dozen law enforcement officers - all of them taken by surprise by hijackers trying to steal the red Kenworth T600 truck and its load of pot.

In the confusion of the attack in northwest Harris County, compounded by officers in the operation not all knowing each other, a Houston policeman shot and wounded a Harris County sheriff's deputy.]

I took a look at the Building One America conference yesterday since I know so much of the rest of the story. No only could I see how it fit, it finally explained the attraction of Van Jones. It's the environmental justice movement that is the overarching template. Imagine my surprise at learning that so much of the ej movement is being run out of Clark Atlanta u. Made me extra nervous about that TSplost vote yesterday. I knew the Agenda 21 angle but it turns out the ej movement has been holding ATL out as the perfect poster child for sprawl and what it calls apartheid in the suburbs.

No wonder the accreditors forced that duplicitous school charter on Fulton that mirrored the awful ed practices that APS had been piloting that produced the cheating scandal. The city of ATL district bisects North and South Fulton. Right now it is a 90 mile long school district missing its middle. I wonder how long that is supposed to last.

Does anyone think there will be any punishment or discpline of any kind for the idiots who conceived the operation that led to the killing, or the morons who actually carried it out?

Wouldn't it be nice of our officeholders, political appointees and law enforcement officials were subject to the same criminal and civil laws that us regular citizens are?

If any one of us on here f**ked up the way that these DEA replicants did in our work or private life; if we stole somebody's $100,000 truck, used it in what we decided was a good cause, distributed illegal drugs in our neighborhood, and got somebody killed...

Well, any one of us would be facing life plus a hundred years in prison. These jackasses will get, if they're really unlucky, a slap on the wrist that they can then ignore on the way to collecting their gold-plated lifetime pensions paid for by us.

I have no proof of this, because Harry Reid will not release a statement denying it. If Harry Reid would only prove that he wasn't raping ducks at the local pond, we might find out the truth. Harry Reids father was probably a polygamist too, of this I have no proof that he wasn't, so I'm going with YES, he was a polygamist, and Harry was the runt of one of his wifes litters.
