I haven't watched 60 minutes in about 30 year...where is mike wallace?

tcb

Bob Shaver on 60 minutes finally woke up when he was able to say "Bain Capital!"

Sara

where is mike wallace?

6' under.

Jim Eagle

Another reason I am finally out of here. If you cannot post simple, unforgiving posts about innocuous subjects like golf then this place is full of itself and cliquish as it gets.

tcb

Ryan is ripping Obuma a new one. Bob Shaver wiped the smile off his face.

Jane - talk is cheap!

60 Minutes:

RYAN is the republican master of the federal economy. The campaign is now an ideological battle.

Was there one moment when you said: "this is my guy"

We've been working together over a year, I am impressed with his acumen, his family and I decided on August 1st.

Why did you hire him? He's a leader, he wants to get the country back on track. and we are going to fix this country.

What did you say Ryan? I said "yes" I've thought for a while now that our country is in a perilous position.

To see all Americans coming out hungry for solutions.

What did he say: We share the same values and I have the skill to compliment his experience.

What did you say:

I said "yes".

What does your familyt think? We dedicate most of our lives to public service. We think the country needs leadership. We think we can do it.

Are you hedging your bets? No I'm already on the ballot.

Ryan is known as a teacher, will you learn from him?

Of course. We will work together and I make the final call. He's not partisan or political he is a policy guy. I'm a policy guy and we face big challanges.

We have 23 million americans out of work. You need people who can do that?

Are you the attack dog? I;m gonna get us elected.

Do you think Romney has been too defensive?

I see a president with a terrible record so he has to divide people and attack a great record.

What wll be Ryan's role?

Certain areas are his areas where he will lead including cabinet officers, and also shephard legislation. I can't imagine not using that skill.

That was a key reason why I selected him,.

what has happened on Capital hill?

It's the worst I;ve seen and it starts with a fundamental lack of leadership. We are planting the seeds for bipartisen compromises.

You did something that seldom happens in DC. Both sides were delighted/

tcb

"Another reason I am finally out of here. "

So was that your last post? Nobody here listens to me ever, but I don't give a shit.

tcb

Bob Shaver is getting all riled up about taxes now! I am pretty sure his earlier smile was forced.

NJ Jan

Ryan answeringcquestions with a direct and succinct answer. BOTH are on top of questions so far and are coming off very positively. Turning questions to their advantage.

Rick Ballard

DrJ,

I was with jimmyk's take as well but I didn't remember the musical chairs situation wrt committee chairs. It would take a suspension of rules for Ryan to retain the chairman job and I don't know enough about the inside power structure to even guess whether he would be successful. Budget really isn't nearly as important as Ways and Means, Appropriations or Rules in the House. Ryan may be most effective as VP.

It's nice to see some excitement.

tcb

Is Bob Shaved mentally retarded? He does not understand why capital investments are beneficial to jobs.

Now Bob Shaver is on tax returns. He was all riled up again. It's like he memorizes his questions with no follow up because the old goat has no idea what he is talking about.

Jane - talk is cheap!

America has a choice. Are we going to continue to spend a trillion dollars we don't have every year.

Is it a referendum on Ryan's budget?

I have my own budget. If people think costs have gone down and jobs are more plentiful, vote for him/

What are you going to do about cronyism. Obama has brought cronyism to a whole new level basedon fads like Solyndra. We need fairness by getting gvt bureaucracy and cronyism out.

Doesn't fairness mean the rich should pay mroe.

They do and they will. Under my plan middle class taxes will come down.

Don't the rich pay a lower rate?

It depends on the kind of income.

Ryan: Take away the ta shelters and lower rates for everyone.

How many returns did you turn over to Romnye.

Several . Poeple aren't asking wwhere the tax returns are they are asking where the jobs are. This is a distraction/

So you made a huge faux pas yesterday and introduced him as president.

I did and laughing, I think Obama did the same thing.

They did great.

centralcal

Jane and NJ Jan - about to watch Ryan homecoming live, I will check in afterwards for your live blog(s) - you go girls!

matt

unfortunately, they probably won't be coming out to California. In their honor I shall wear dark slacks, a blue shirt, and maybe even a blazer tomorrow.

As a former caddy I will just say "but we can't shoot all the golfers."

tcb

Now I remember why I haven't watched 60 minutes in 30 years. Horrible. I don't care if you are a Repub or Dem that show just sucks.

hit and run

Sara:
You've been kind of caustic at different times all this past week. I attribute it to you being horny as hell. :)

Let me patiently and thoroughly dispense with that notion with this exposition on why that is not true.

First, I...

I give up.

Sara

Yikes! My phone just went ballistic. A sound I've never heard before and at the same time we got a TV EAS warning.

When I checked my phone, it was flashing in big letters, TAKE COVER, TAKE COVER. Tornado Warning.

This is not tornado country.

Janet

Nobody here listens to me ever, but I don't give a shit.

Hah!, tcb! That's my attitude too! hahahaa...& I embrace the words from one of my patches, "I smile because I have no idea what's going on".

Jane - talk is cheap!

Oh sorry NJ Jan, I didn't know you were here. I apologize for stepping on your toes.

shephard legislation.

I bet you had no idea Romney was for "shepherd legislation".

Ignatz

--Forget his indiscretions and your personal opinion of him, he is a great golfer who changed the game for the guys winning today.--

Why should I forget my personal opinion of a guy who cheated on his wife at least hundreds of times and made a complete fool out of her? And as the greatest current golfer he brought shame and dishonor to the sport itself, and has continued to do so with his infantile and petulant whining and cursing on the course.
My opinion of Bill Clinton as a man and a president is informed by his utter lack of character and integrity. Why should my opinion of Woods as a man and golfer be any different?
In a just world Elin would have rendered one of his shoulders inop for the duration with one of his irons.
No sport or job, not even the Masters or the Presidency transcends personal honor in my book.
The guy's a bum and that's not even entertaining the issue of the doc who likes to administer banned substances.

Greetings from the RR Rally in Highpoint. It was packed, and I finally resigned myself to taking pictures of other people's pictures:

RRRally

Jane - talk is cheap!

I love Ryan.

I love Romney/Ryan

I also love JIB so don't you dare leave.

Rick Ballard

"Nobody here listens to me ever"

Untrue. Invite a response, respond directly to another commenter, ask a commenter a direct question and you'll get a response. I read your comments with some interest but you haven't engaged directly yet.

It's nice to see new folks in comments (Hi, NJ Jan and Marcia in Phoenix) but please note the number of regulars' comments which do not receive responses.

If all else fails, pick a fight. They're easy to start.

DrJ

"shepherd legislation"

Clearly they are abusing animals once again. Was Seamus not enough?

NJ Jan

Schieffer cant rattle either one. This bodes well for the muddle intro to ROmney/Ryan. They came across as reasonable and likeable. I tried to watch through the eyes of typical 60 minutes/Today Show watcher (some of my friends) .. I think they will be hard to be demonized.

Jane - talk is cheap!

Oh cool JMH! COOOOOOOOOOOOL!

Jane - talk is cheap!

Ryan is hitting it out of the park - again. 3 speeches and 1 interview today and no notes, not teleprompter - just love of country.

It is sooooo coooooooool.

DrJ

Rick,

Budget really isn't nearly as important as Ways and Means, Appropriations or Rules in the House. Ryan may be most effective as VP.

I don't know all the inside ball either, but your observation here is a good one. In the last day or two I read something about the chair of the Way and Means, and I was surprised that this wasn't Ryan's position. So Budget does seem minor, especially with today's Senate (I HOPE there is a CHANGE!)

It's nice to see some excitement.

Agreed.

Jane - talk is cheap!

JIB,'

When I have a battle here and get pissed off I put myself in a time-out for about a week. (And you know it is never ever my fault [g])

The only person that notices is Caro - who wonders if I am dead. And that is probably a good thing. I calm down and come back to my online home. We are human. shit happens.

mockmook

I'll semi-agree with Ig.

I'll never be a big fan of Tiger again. When I see him, I think "JERK" (but, what a talented jerk).

I appreciate his talent, and I have reconciled myself to hoping he regains his capacity to put his God given talent to its full use.

Unrealized talent is such a waste.

hit and run

I'm truly sorry. I had no intention to insult anyone. I am always good-natured toward fellow JOMers, all of whom I hold in the highest esteem. I completely understand that in written text I can fail to convey that respect, and can come across as snarky and disrespectful when trying to make a joke. That is not my intent, but it is fully my fault when I fail.

I'll never *not* argue a point I firmly believe, even if it might alienate someone I respect -- but it is wrong to pick at a point that is pointless when I know it would do the same.

I am sorry.

Ignatz

--I think they will be hard to be demonized.--

Not for lack of trying. It's just how Demoncrats roll.

Sara

JMH: I am so jealous.

The station I was watching went to commercial, so I switched and Romney was yelling at someone. What happened?

Another Bob

Romney in Waukesha: "Mr. President, get your campaign out of the gutter!"

Another Bob

Sara: Heckler at the rally.

NJ Jan

My toes are fine, Jane! I cant live blog like you. That's a special talent. I'm just giving impressions. At this point, it takes me about 5 minutes for one post. I'm using kindle and its a pain.

Jane - talk is cheap!

From twitter: When protesters interrupt Obama, they chant "Obama", when they interrupt Romney, they chant "USA"....

Captain Hate

If you cannot post simple, unforgiving posts about innocuous subjects like golf then this place is full of itself and cliquish as it gets.

You seem to be the one catching feelings at somewhat snarky but relatively inoffensive responses to statements you've made with which many people might differ. And then you pull rank by citing your handicap as if that invalidates anybody else's opinion. Stating that your golfing prowess makes your opinion on the hierarchy of touring pros superior to all fits the definition of 'full of oneself'.

Just to be clear, I respect your opinion but may not agree with it.

Captain Hate

The only person that notices is Caro

Wrong

DrJ

NJ Jan,

I've not said so earlier, but WELCOME! I think you are the first here from NJ.

You should read (and perhaps have!) Jane's outstanding live blogging of important Obama speeches, like the SOTU. Better snark cannot be found.

Jane - talk is cheap!

Mitt Romney makes you feel like you are in his living room. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing.

DrJ

Since Capt'n is back, here's a recommendation for you: Hermitage Brewing Co.'s Hoptopia double IPA (San Jose). You gotta like really hoppy brews -- I do.

DrJ

I can't keep my eyes dry even today when I watch the National Anthem from the 2002 Olympics.

Untrue. I appreciate your combo Gus/pops/CH style comments and also your excellent IDing of those gun pics I posted yesterday.

Manuel Transmission

Jane: I'm afraid of violence frankly. It's going to be the worst we have ever seen and they will be willing to do a lot of things we aren't. And the media will let them.

I think the progs and their vermin should recall Yamamoto's observation about waking the sleeping giant. Every quiet, non-political person I know has a safe full of ammo and several devices to dispense it if the time should ever come. No chest thumping, no threats, just the resolve to not let the progs win in a dirty, violent fight. The 9/12 and Chick-fil-A events were both several levels above that point of deep resolve, but it is down there quietly ready if the worst were ever to come.

Jane - talk is cheap!

I'm struck by how real these people are as opposed to the opponants. It's truly amazing.

Indeed.

Man Tran,

I was sure there was going to be terrorism at the Olympics and I was dead wrong. I hope I am equally wrong about the campaign.

sbw

Wouldn't change Hit. Wouldn't change JiB. I enjoy both and learn from each. JOM would be lesser is one of them moved on.

Jane - talk is cheap!

That's sweet Capt.

NJ Jan

Watching Homecoming. They are both fantastic. Wow!!
Didn't think I'd become this enthusiastic/excited.

Ignatz, I know the dens will try everything they can to make them look like monsters, but that's hard to do when your targets come across as cheerful, reasonable, intelligent men. They tried with. Reagan and failed.

Sara

Mitt Romney makes you feel like you are in his living room. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing.

A good thing I think, especially since the left and some of the pundits from our side are constantly harping on how he doesn't connect with people. A charge I've not understood after watching hours and hours of his rallies and speeches, but still seems to be the impression.

I know I envy those who had him as their Bishop and Stake President all those years. But, unless he is willing to open up, I don't know how he can make non-Mormons understand that deeply caring and compassionate side of him, while at the same time, often having to make some very tough decisions for those who come in droves with all their problems..

Charlie (Colorado)

One more thing. You cannot graduate from HS if you cannot sing the National Anthem:)

Jack, speaking as someone who has occasionally been paid to sing, I can tell you -- nobody can sing the National Anthem.

Captain Hate

Hermitage Brewing Co.'s Hoptopia double IPA (San Jose). You gotta like really hoppy brews -- I do.

I like IPAs ok (Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale has been a frequent flyer this summer) but I'm really more of a Belgian style fan. I may try it if I can find it though so keep those recs coming.

Charlie (Colorado)

I haven't watched 60 minutes in about 30 year...where is mike wallace?

He's dead, Jim.

centralcal

Okay, teared up a bit with Paul Ryan having a homecoming in WI. His life is forever (or at least for the next 3 plus months) changed.

Thanks to Jane and NJ Jan for reporting on the 60 minutes interview.

JiB - We love ya. Hit is just going through family withdrawal and has been kind of taking it out on his other family, not only today, but for a few days. Forgive and forget and thank God Frederick and the Missus didn't go on an extended visit without you. K?

I didn't say they'd succeed NJ Jan only that they're genetically programmed to do nothing else.
I think people are fed up with the mutated freaks.

Sara

I don't know, I think the Mormon Tabernacle Choir does a pretty good job of it. I offer the above video link as proof.

But I agree that for us normal folk, it can be tough.

centralcal

TCB: that is so not true. I have been helter skelter here today with family stuff, but I have enjoyed and even replied to one or two of your comments (though, red face and mea culpa I didn't preface my comment(s) to tcb).

Don't give up on us. We are JOMers and we are great folks.

NJ Jan

DrJ,

Thanks for the welcome. I have been reading JOM for a few years and Jane 's live blogging is amazing. As I posted above, that is a special talent

I have also read kattty kattenberg -- what can I say, its dirty jerz (as we natives call it). Its an interesting breed here.

Sara

This is old, but seems so on point today after watching R & R.

DrJ

Capt'n,

I may try it if I can find it though so keep those recs coming.

That one probably will be very hard to find. Torpedo Extra IPA (Sierra Nevada) is decent, but note nearly as good.

I'm really much more of a wine person, but with the 100 degree days we've had recently, a beer-like substance is more suitable. (We have no AC -- only a swamp cooler. Low humidity, so it works.)

hrtshpdbox

Wow. I don't know if Romney regularly tells that story about the 2002 Olympics National Anthem as part of his stump speech, but it's damned effective. That was one fine campaign stop tonight in Wisconsin!

Danube of Thought

"I'm not really sure history will regard him as being as great for the sport as you automatically are assuming."

Although a dedicated non-golfer, I would have to disagree very strongly. The ratings differential between when he is and is not playing is staggering. There is something about the man I do not like, so I choose to wish him ill. But I don't believe that my wishes affect him.

His dominance of the sport during the period when he won those 14 majors has never been seen before--Nicklaus wasn't close--and will never be seen again.

Charlie (Colorado)

Back off because you are acting like a real prick.

Jack, if one snark per day is your limit then for Gods' sakes wear a helmet. Hit just apologized and frankly, you're being a shit.

hit and run

Speaking of beers. mrs hit and run had one request today to mark her return tomorrow (besides me getting the house spic and span, which didn't need to be requested). She wanted some Shiner Blonde waiting for her - very chilled.

I can do this!

I went to one grocery store, and then another, and then another. Lowes, Food Lion, Harris Teeter. No one had the Blonde. So I went to the beer/wine superstore here.

Nope. They had a "family pack" or something that had a mixture that included a blonde, hopefully two (I haven't checked).

I'm really mad now that I can't deliver the one thing mrs hit and run asked for.

I'm thinking of pushing for some federal legislation to make sure this never happens again. It's the only way to right this wrong.

Charlie (Colorado)

This is not tornado country.

Tell us about it AFTER the tornado warning is over.

Captain Hate

DrJ, you might be right on the availability but the guy that does the beer purchasing at a local family owned beverage store makes a lot of trips to the west coast and is quite resourceful. I'll try to plant a seed if he doesn't already know about it.

(A) nuther Bub

I haven't watched 60 minutes in about 30 year...where is mike wallace?

Don't despair, tcb. I laughed.

Sara

Wow. I don't know if Romney regularly tells that story about the 2002 Olympics National Anthem as part of his stump speech, but it's damned effective. That was one fine campaign stop tonight in Wisconsin!

I heard him tell it once before, but I think it was in an interview, not on the campaign trail and I don't recall the part about Derek Parra.

Clarice

Wow, JMH! Cool

From LI:
"Anne is at the Romney-Ryan rally in Waukesha. She says the crowd is so large they had to move the rally from indoors to outdoors to accomodate all the people.

We’re still trying to confirm the crowd size estimate. (Campaign says 10,000, which is similar to what Anne was told.)"

JiB, stick around.

It's like family here, we all occasionally get on each other's nerves but it's cause we love each other.

centralcal

Oh - I so wish I had some clever comment like our beautiful AB, but, alas I do not. It has been a chaotic day in centralcal-land. However, I am really, really disappointed that Sarah Palin will not be speaking at the Republican National Convention.

I am going pour another cocktail (yes, AB, I am carefully monitoring them) and ... then, I don't know what.

Clarice

CH, glad you made it home.

DrJ

Capt'n,

That is worth a shot. The backstory is that Hermitage is a contract brewer (in addition to their own stuff) who acquired the bottling facility of the Tied House, a great South Bay microbrewery/pub originally based in Mountain View (Jim? You here?).

The sense I get is that they do the bottling and contract work to fund their brews, which largely are IPAs or various sorts. If you local place would give them a go, I'm sure they would appreciate the exposure.

And you, their brews.

Darrell Issa to Sue Eric Holder Monday

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa plans to sue Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday for refusing to provide documents related to the "Fast and Furious" gun-smuggling operation.

"The committee expects to file the civil contempt suit against the attorney general Monday," a Republican source said. The suit will be filed in the federal district court for the District of Columbia.

The action is the latest escalation in the dispute between House Republicans and the Justice Department over the documents, which relate to a botched gun-smuggling operation.

On June 28, the House voted to hold Holder in contempt of Congress and authorized the Oversight panel to bring suit to enforce its rights.

In Fast and Furious, agents for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed assault guns to "walk," which meant ending surveillance on weapons suspected to be en route to Mexican drug cartels.

The tactic, which was intended to allow agents to track criminal networks by finding the guns at crime scenes, was condemned after two guns that were part of the operation were found at Border Patrol agent Brian Terry's murder scene.

In the most recent conflict between Congress and the president over a Congressional subpoena, Democrats' and Republicans' roles were reversed.

The Democratic-led House held two White House aides, Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten, in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas issued to the George W. Bush administration. Republicans, including Issa, defended the administration, while Democrats said it was unlawful.

After the House held Miers and Bolten in contempt, the Judiciary Committee sued the two aides in federal district court.

In August 2008, a federal judge ordered Miers to testify and Bolten to turn over documents, overruling the administration's claim of executive privilege. That ruling was appealed.

In March 2009, a year after the suit was filed, Miers and Karl Rove, who had also become ensnared in a separate contempt proceeding, agreed to testify behind closed doors to the House Judiciary Committee. The deal broke the stalemate.

Tell us about it AFTER the tornado warning is over.

The Warning was until 5 Pm and it is 5:38, so I guess it is over. I'm glad that doesn't happen very often, I don't think I could stand to hear the noise my phone made again. It sounded like the spawn of a vuvuzela and nails on a blackboard.

Captain Hate

The ratings differential between when he is and is not playing is staggering.

I'd be a fool to argue that isn't the case. My point is whether it will ultimately carry forward as being good for the sport without him; as in permanently lift the ratings even when he's not playing.

I don't consider people golf fans that only watch when Tiger's playing. I knew lots of people that only watched the NBA when Jordan played; some of them by their own admission couldn't care less about the NBA and haven't watched a bit since he finally retired. He may have added a number of permanent fans that resisted the evil incompetence of Devil Stern though...

Marcia in Phoenix

Agreed, NJ Jan and all, R and R did great. Romney needs to lose the school bus anecdote (because it is alread getting stale) and think of something else, but he did beautifully, and he is clearly on fire. Every Ryan speech looks like it will be different and equally riveting based on the last two days of home-run public speaking prowess.

Agree with Jane, sbw, centralcal, and everyone who has weighed in: don't go anywhere, JiB!! You and hit are high on the list of JOM MVPs, plus please re-read hit's heartfelt apology and don't forget his extenuating Sunday pressure of just finding out that he is now conscripted to dust bunny detail on top of everything else!

Romney's Declaration of War

Someday I would like to know when Romney decided to go all in.

Marcia: It is one of the complaints of reporters assigned to campaigns that they have to listen to the same lines over and over. The only thing I try to remember is that those waiting in Wisconsin are unlikely to have heard those lines that we did earlier in North Carolina.

When you give up to a half dozen speeches a day to completely different groups, there is no getting around repeating what works. Unfortunately, with so much coverage, it does get stale.
