Sara:
This reminds me, have any of you North Carolinians heard anything about them moving the Dem Convention from, I think, a stadium to a much smaller venue? I heard something a week or so ago, but I can't remember when or the source.

Haven't heard that. I know the Dems cancelled an extra-curricular event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. But as far as I know the nomination is still scheduled for Bank of America Stadium.

DrJ

Capt'n,

The delightful and charming MrsJ pulled those up those reviews from the Beer Advocate too. I disagree with their opinions.

NK

Hit/DoT-- i will impose on you about the guadalcanal materials. I ve been a reader of that history for over 40 years. DoT I re- read the final chapter of Inferno, those few pages about returning to Iron Bottom Sound were at one time heartbreaking and uplifting. The Atlanta, a 'machine gun' cruiser, every man aboard that night was a hero. We as a nation can never repay those men. I'll send my referee email to Hit. Regards

henry

Local news reported attendance at 10,000+ citing the local fire chief. I missed most of the event, only caught Romney at the end. Thanks for the live blogging!

Jane - talk is cheap!

I don't consider people golf fans that only watch when Tiger's playing.

I think what Tiger did, which had not been done since Nicklaus or Palmer was get people excited to watch golf.

When someone is really good at a sport, it is easy to understand that sport. I never understood football. Then in my first year of law school the day after Thanksgiving I watched Flute throw his hail Mary pass. That game was the very first time I understood football, and that's what I think Tiger did for golf.

Sara

Maybe that is what I heard, Hit and got it confused. I just tried to search but didn't find anything but this:

which cracks me up. Maybe the heat is getting to me, but it strikes me as hilarious that they are discounting the buttons.

pops

Just flipping through the channels and came across I think MTV show about people with issues/problems. Young girl like 22, who spends too much and has no money. Loves to shop.

So she goes to a therapist for her shopping and mentions the therapist visits are FREE because Medicaid pays for them.

Honestly just show the public all these bubble headed 22-30 year olds who think life is a free ride with free therapists, free birth control, free healthcare, free food, etc. etc.

The left is taking the country right down the drain. I sincerely also blame the Republicans for signing on to the debt ceiling increase - it was an absolute betrayal of the nations founding principals.

Captain Hate

When someone is really good at a sport, it is easy to understand that sport.

I don't think I agree with that. I think I'd put it this way: The way to understand a sport is to play it. Maybe the way to appreciate the aesthetics of a sport is to watch somebody really good at it.

PD

Imagine ... a Tammy Baldwin-free Congress.

pops

Its pretty clear why Romney picked Ryan. After Romney kills off women, he needs Ryan to dispose of the bodies by thowing them over a cliff.

Marcia in Phoenix

Sara,

That's a very good point, and I have to learn to be more patient with campaigns. I would be telling the rows of folks behind the podium to not touch their cell phones during the rally, to not yawn, to not even think about gum, and for God's sakes, Reince Priebus, to never talk to the person next to you when a principal is giving his speech because the camera will be right on you and your giggling.

centralcal, thanks! I've loved the dynamics and magic of JOM since Plame days. You all are gems and endlessly fascinating--not to mention therapeutic (well, everyone, that is, who is not the subject of a DoT rapid-reaction public service alert!!)

hrtshpdbox

The way to understand a sport is to play it.
Even if you play it really, really poorly (I'm thinking of my relationship to tennis).

NJ Jan

Hit & Run,

Your wife is a woman with discriminating taste. Shiner Blond is my favorite. Told my daughter to make sure its in her fridge when I visit her in Texas next month. NJ is a backward state -- it doesn't have any.

Captain Hate

Btw, I could be wrong on how good Tiger is for the game of golf from this standpoint: With the higher ratings from when he's playing comes higher tournament payouts, which increases the interest of potential players. So maybe his impact will carry on. Which I think was what JiB was saying...

Danube of Thought

Golf arguments are like college faculty disputes: they get so vicious because the stakes are so low.

Ignatz

Better stock up on wine spritzers, coke [both bottled and bagged] and prophylactics H&R; you'll retire on the proceeds, but you might need a D-11 and a Cat 992 to clean up after the chuckleheads.
And please keep Hit Jr and Princess Hit indoors for the duration unless they're armed to the teeth and unsupervised.

Who knew?

Sara

Is it safe to admit that I only watch golf when Tiger is playing?

Should I admit that I stopped watching tennis when McEnroe quit playing?

And I'll probably lose interest in NASCAR when Jeff Gordon retires.

Football, OTH, is one of those sports that my Dad insisted I learn to understand, even though I wouldn't play it. He told me I'd thank him later. I found it an amazing dating tool when I was younger and could impress the guys with my knowledge of the game, so I have thanked him in my mind many times. Now I can barely watch football. After I wrecked my knee, every hard hit I saw, caused shooting pains in my knee. Go figure. And watching with my son, who calls every play correctly before the ball is snapped drives me bonkers.

Danube of Thought

Things I wish I had said (but Selwyn Duke did):

"Hey Fareed, you got a paragraph? You didn't wrie that."

Clarice

I'm really inspirited by these huge crowds. Either they are spontaneous which reflects well on the decision or they reflect the work of the campaign committee and volunteers on the ground which speaks well for the necessary organization.

It must be scaring the opposition no end.

PS for Hit re JOM commenting style, quoting, formatting etc

Currently I am using a cheap little netbook I had to buy here in PV after I fried a brand new Lenovo laptop I bought in the states, I left it running on my ocean front terrace and a rain squall came through. Oops!

This piece of crap I have right now has keys that are mislabled, a horrible atom cpu etc so I can't do italics, html formatting etc and it sucks big time. It is driving me mad...

Jane

Capt,

By that standard a woman can never understand football, and I don't agree with that.

But I still don't think I've made the point I was trying to make.

C'est la vie.

DrJ

Sorry for the length, but this letter to the editor is behind the WSJ pay wall, and I thought it worth reprinting here.

It Is Too Late to Cry for Argentina

For those who would like a free lesson in what is at stake in this November's election, Pierpaolo Barbieri's "A Lesson in Crony Capitalism" (op-ed, Aug. 9) is a good start. My family immigrated from Argentina in the mid-'60s after its first major devaluation of the peso which began the long and systematic elimination of one of the most productive middle classes in the world. That era ushered in the start of a non-ending tidal wave of government control, limit-less corruption and the destruction of individual self-sufficiency.

Once in the top five in the world for standard of living, Argentina now has become a bottom feeder third-world nation. The husband and wife Kirchner governments have created a completely dependent population which is controlled by throwing them the usual nationalist bones such as the Falklands, anti-American and anti-success rhetoric against productive nations, and the ever-present shouts of a long lost pride "Argentina, Argentina!" Unfortunately, the Argentine nation is too far gone into the abyss of corrupt government mismanagement and there is likely no way out of this in the next several decades, if ever.

In hearing Mr. Obama and his vision for America, we can peek into the future that awaits the U.S. if we continue on the path that he has set for this still-great nation. It is too late to cry for Argentina. Let's act now so we won't have to cry for the U.S.

Clarice

Ah, but Dr J, every Argentinian is entitled to one free plastic surgery a year. Think how happy that would make Sandra Fluke.

DrJ

windansea, get a generation-old laptop and dump the netbook (brrrr). geeks.com is a good place to keep an eye on for this sort of thing. Their stock rotates a lot but they do get good stuff on a regular basis.

Ignatz

Doubtful, with brutes like WeeDavey on their side, who after a hard weekend of not brushing his teeth and mopping up the local bars with the heads of several Navy officers would scarcely be frightened by a few tens of thousands of Republicans with Uzis, including even their toddlers.

Sara

Clarice: Normally I'd say it is some of both, but this all came about so quickly and with such secrecy, it is hard to think how the campaign could have gotten the volunteers out there in those numbers, especially on a Sunday in Summer.

It is certainly easier to get the word out to large groups of people these days, though, then it was when I was trying to marshal crowds, even for Reagan/Bush. Romney does have the social media thing down pat and has his own Army of Davids all over Facebook and Twitter.

I saw this morning that they had gotten 4 million likes on one Romney page.

xbradtc

I don't know about windandsea's netbook, but I love mine. Any challenges with formatting and HTML are mine, and mine alone, not the computer's.

And at $200 or so a pop, it's not that far off from being disposable.

hit and run

Ignatz:
Hit's driveway?

I'd need Charlie to confirm crowd density ranges - but my driveway is roughly 150' long.

We can do this!

Danube of Thought

TK, let me be as polite as I can: your head is filled with very cuckoo notions about what English common law is, and how it affects American state law and constitutional interpretation.

Let's start with the fact that there is no federal common law, English or otherwise. Read Erie Lackawanna Railroad v. Tompkins and report back.

hit and run

windansea:
It is driving me mad...

Driving? I think it could have been a short walk.

(was that too much?)

boatbuilder

JBH--you are right about Tiger; wrong about Hit.

Tiger, probably the best golfer/athlete since Snead, and a player with Jordan-like focus and drive, made the current crop of young golfers--including and maybe especially Rory--much better athletes and golfers than they would otherwise be. For a long time he was so much better than everybody that nobody cared or knew who was number two. He forced every talented young player to focus that much harder and to keep themselves in real shape. He changed the game. He is not done--although I thought he was because his injuries affected his ability to win simply by sheer athleticism, he has proven me wrong. He is also currently number two in the world (I think) despite not winning anything, and still the guy everyone else worries about. I understood your point to be along the lines of Parcell's "You are the team your record says you are." I.e., forget all the hype, pay attention to the golf. Don't dismiss Tiger's achievements and ability because he is a jerk.

Hit's comment may have hit you as snarky but I am certain that he meant it with a grin on his face and a beer in his hand (two actually--one for him and one for you). This is a guy who tried very hard (and actually succeeded) to make friends with Dana/Ben/Cleo, for crissake. He didn't even get mad at me when I got lost trying to find the airport in the place I have lived for 27 years, and I was morally certain (and I am morally certain he thought so too)caused him to miss his flight (he made it somehow). I would have got mad at me. He is truly a prince of a fellow.

Please stick around. And please don't stay mad at Hit.

Frau Gartenspinne

Anyone wandered over to Morlock Revolt. It's "Clarice territory."

DrJ

xbradtc,

If you like your netbook, more power to you. We had one for a bit, and I found it unusable.

For the same price or maybe $100 more, I'd rather have a generation-old Thinkpad with four times the speed, twice the screen resolution, a great keyboard, and a ruggedness that you never will find in a netbook.

To each his own, I suppose.

"If you know golf like I do then you understand where I come from."

Posted by: Jack is Back | August 12, 2012 at 05:26 PM

I know golf too, and you are half right. As a PGA professional I have a lot of inside info on Tiger, I was a rules official for several of his junior SoCal tournaments and also know Butch Harmon and Hank Haney personally. Tiger has done a lot for golf and in his prime he was unbeatable, and his dedication to fitness, work ethic etc are legendary. He is also a grade A asshole, a bully, and very cheap.

Golf is a game of character and guts, Tiger is lacking in these qualities and his present performance shows whats underneath.

He is a lot like Obama.

It's cooler here than in the central valley, but more than we're used to, so it's been a delight to grill and tip a few brews out of doors.

Well, we are in the foothills at a 1,500 feet elevation, so it is cooler than the central valley (waves to CCal!) but much warmer than where you are.

It still is a good time for the grill, the smoker (salmon!) and a few brews.

So let me get this straight….

The Senate is required by law to pass a budget.
But Harry Reid refuses to even bring one to a vote.

I don't think the blogs even know what ads are served up by the ad services they enroll in, because the ads are geographically or demographically targeted.
