Re. debate moderators: What about a "We'll Be Voting But We Won't Be Watching' movement with an online petition drive? E-signing the petition means you, a political junkie, will skip all the debates, but still vote.

The election commission doesn't care about ratings, but they do care about perception. What will it look like if the debates score low ratings after 1 million people promise NOT to watch because of their choices for debate moderators.

In an age of partisanship with no unbiased sources it seems pretty easy to figure out a solution - each candidate puts 10 names on a list, the other candidate picks 2 of those names. That's how you get Brit and Brett to the debates. Otherwise it will NEVER happen.

Insty posts a link to the "meme generator", my work browser is blocked. Do they react THAT swiftly to new sites? Or do the site self-identify?

A couple of weeks ago a rather large and important software development site landed on the blocked list at work. The security drones (hi guys!) justified it with tales about the sight being "hacked" and having a "forum" and all sorts of weird tales.

The suspected "rest of the story" is that the site was blocked by the "security" vendor our security drones picked, and that the vendor blocked it because the site hosts software that shows what the vendor illegally helped the Syrian government block.

Let me put it this way: nothing Wilson did made Hitler's rise to power inevitable. The German people (and other European powers) had multiple opportunities to prevent it. Wilson (and the legions who shared hus beliefs) was at most a "but for" cause of the Holocaust and the rest of the horrors, but the number of intervening causes and actors are too numerous to list. The proximate (immediate) cause of the war in Europe was beyond a shadow of a doubt Adolf Hitler.

If my math is correct [one of life's great unwarranted assumptions] she must have been a ball of fire to still be fundraising at 89 and older.

Ig:

Six months after that entry, there are three weeks of entries on her trip to Japan and China. Several pages on climbing the Great Wall. And she was still throwing her pup tent and Coleman lantern in the trunk of her car and taking off with her dog to camp and hike in the High Sierras. So the answer is yes, right up to the day of her first stroke, she was a "ball of fire." She was a brilliant and amazing woman who cast a big shadow that sometimes swallowed me up, especially after my father died, but I had five good years with her before she died and thank God every day that we cleared the air and dumped all the old baggage (mostly mine) and learned to just love each other unconditionally.

I feel particularly blessed that she was such an earnest journal keeper starting with her first one when she organized the "loose tooth club" with her friends. You had to have a loose tooth to join. She was about six at the time and she wrote in those journals nearly every day until the year before she died at age 94. Many of the entries are dry and not more than a quick note of a meeting although the day I was born she wrote something to the effect of "daughter arrived and Germany surrendered," which cracked me up when I read it. I was born on VE Day. It was fun to read some of the entries during her college and early working years, but the one that really got to me was an entry about me when I was in high school where she wrote, "Sara's in love and doesn't know it yet and I'm very worried." She should have been as I was in the first stages of my first true love. Those were followed up on several dates with, "Another date with M. tonight and she came home on time, no elopement tonight."

Watched the Maddow-Lowry clip. Maddow kept insisting that it would be "Romney vs. Ryan" over the Medicare cuts and comparing Ryan's plan directly to Obama's. Lowry could have done a better job explaning to Maddow the difference between the person running at the top of the ticket and the person in the VP slot, but he did mention it several times.

It reminded me of when they compared Obama directly to Palin in 2008, as if voters were choosing between them rather than between Obama and McCain. It worked pretty well back then so I'm not surprised they're doing it again.

Maddow really loses credibility when she says things like "that's amazing" and throws her hands around like Lizzie Warren. She looks like she's arguing in a bar with hipsters, not speaking as a supposed media professional.

rse

DOT-I believe that the seeds of both World War 1 and 2 were sown in Germany in the 19th century. Largely through the education system there. The belief that the collective came first, reason was suspect, and emotion was to be cultivated via the schools until responses were unconscious and instinctive is part of my current deja vu nightmare. If you ever go to my blog the header quote is from Julien Benda's The Treason of the Intellectuals from 1927 with a similar fear over comparable deliberate cultivations. He was right. I am too but I am trying to catch this before the conflagration thank you very much.

Although Dewey never did the Germany trip he was taught and surrounded by so many who had trekked to Wundt's lab and the ramifications got imported back over to the US. What Wilson did was solidify that Germanic mindset of planning and control and disdain for the masses as official US policy.

And that's my 3 cents worth. Hitler built on a foundation that had cultivated emotion and the herd instinct.

That's when individuals matter the most. When a majority emotionally believes in a bad idea.

Rob Crawford

She looks like she's arguing in a bar with hipsters, not speaking as a supposed media professional.

JimMtn-- I'll stick with my original comment --an RR Admin is 'awkward' for Palin. So IMO, Palin and Romeny are both hedging bets with each other-- working together where their interests merge, but cautiously. Right now, that means Palin endorsing RR to the Tea Party. That is good for both and no risk-- Romney gets a strong endorsement for Tea Partiers, and Palin stays in the news with Tea Partiers. Beyond that, is caution. Just the way it is.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke before a crowd of 660 people in Durham, N.C., at the Durham Armory during a campaign stop for President Barack Obama on Monday.

Biden’s appearance before a comparatively meager crowd came a day after the newly formed Republican ticket — presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan — rallied a crowd of over 10,000 in High Point, N.C., about an hour away, and a crowd of approximately 4,700 people in Mooresville, N.C., about two and a half hours away.

"If that persists, Gallup concludes, then Republican turnout may surpass Democratic turnout — which didn’t even happen in 2010, although it came close (a 35/35/30 tie).  A low overall turnout combined with enhanced Republican enthusiasm would be the worst of all worlds for Democrats, who have calculated their class-warfare campaign on a base-turnout strategy along the lines of the GOP in 2004.  By that measure, the Obama campaign has so far fallen off the pace, too."

I'd not heard of any link before either. Here's more of the article, though the link is not established:

"Following extensive evaluation, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is undergoing treatment for Bipolar II depression at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.," the clinic's statement said. "Congressman Jackson is responding well to the treatment and regaining his strength."

The clinic's statement said Mr. Jackson "underwent bariatric surgery in 2004, specifically a duodenal switch."

"Many Americans have bipolar disorder," the clinic said. "Bipolar II disorder is a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is most likely caused by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors."

Bipolar disorder, which is sometimes called manic depression, is marked by mood swings. Bipolar II is a less severe form of the disorder than bipolar I, according to the clinic.

5. Then you have to avoid his drone attacks on US citizens.

6. If you make it through all that he has a big death panel waiting to cut you off.

7. His next attempt is to lump you into waiting rooms with poor Medicaid patients high on crack and with multiple diseasesjust waiting for a senior citizens body.

Yuval Levin suggests the bastards don't even know what's hitting them:

"Watching some of the Sunday shows yesterday and reading the usual suspects online, I was struck by how even knowledgeable liberals still do not understand what Obamacare has done to them. They have a sense that health care is no longer a good issue for them, that it might have cost them the 2010 elections and will hurt in 2012, but they haven’t grasped that Medicare — which for decades has been a trusty battering ram against Republicans in the contest for the votes of seniors and others — is also no longer their issue.

This becomes evident in part when you consider that the arguments the Democrats naturally fall back upon regarding Medicare are just false now. So for instance David Axelrod on CNN’s State of the Union referred to 'Congressman Ryan’s idea that we should turn Medicare into a voucher program, shifting thousands of dollars ultimately onto the backs of seniors.' But that’s simply a lie — Ryan’s actual Medicare proposal (which Romney has backed) simply doesn’t shift costs to seniors."

After claims from insurance companies that they plan to dramatically increase premiums this year because of the Affordable Care Act, the White House fired off a threat to the industry’s main lobbying group today.

President Obama's Health and Human Services Department (HHS) took advantage of a technicality that allows Obama to delay revealing the cost of the Obamacare individual mandate on businesses and states.

"By issuing a [health benefits] 'bulletin' rather than a proposed rule, the Administration has sidestepped the requirement to publish a cost benefit analysis estmating the impact these mandates will have on health insurance premiums and the increased cost,".

Don't know if that News Busters story on Candy Crowley had been updated when everybody first saw it, but:

Update: The second paragraph of an earlier version of this piece read, "Doing her part Saturday was CNN's Candy Crowley who said that this 'looks a little bit like some sort of ticket death wish.'" Also, the original title was, "CNN's Candy Crowley: Ryan Pick 'Looks a Little Bit Like Some Sort of Ticket Death Wish.'"

The piece has been changed to better reflect Crowley's claim that this is coming from Republicans even though she didn't name any.

This of course is a common strategy by media members to impart their own opinions by saying they came from nameless others.

I really think Candy Crowley deserves better than that last casual slam. I'm sure the networks who sponsor the debates have a pretty big say in who moderates them, and I think Crowley is the best we could hope for from CNN.

The best way to deal with the liberal bias in the media is to use whatever loaded question they ask you as a platform for getting your own message out there, and Romney is actually pretty good at.
