Exactly, Rich. I can't even remember all the crap this administration pulls. In a closet...good Lord. Can you imagine if Bush had made a reporter sit in a closet!
Hell, at a Romney gathering the reporters were the servers with secret video cameras!

If only they could make 1/10th of that effort with Obama....

Gus

bootleg liquor came through Canada, then, contraband will flow north, not really that complicated.

Ya know, we laugh at the underpants gnome theory...but it works for Obama with the MFM. Obama says something & the MFM declare it as so. al Qaeda is beaten. There is spring in the ME. We had lousy healthcare in the US...*poof*...now it's fixed. Say the Tea Party is racist...*poof*...they are! No proof or action even has to occur! It's a miracle!

Tell me this next story doesn't read like a script for a Monty Python movie.

Here's the plot-line: Two US Senators get Federal Funding for a guy named Guido to build an 80 Million Dollar Ice Breaking Ferry Boat in Ketchikan, the home town of one of the Senators.

Upon completion it is discovered that neither of the 2 Alaskan locations it is to serve, Mat-Su and Anchorage, have ferry boat landings for a car-carrying ferry. No problem, the Mat-Su borough decides to go ahead and build a $4.5 million ferry terminal anyway, just without any possibility of any ferry actually having the ability to ever docking at the terminal.

But wait, there's more!

After a big christening ceremony by Senator Lisa Murkowski, the $80 Million ferryboat has remained docked for the last 2 years "near the Ketchikan shipyard where it was built. The borough didn't pay to build the boat, but as the owner it is now responsible for bills averaging nearly $90,000 a month for dock fees, insurance, maintenance and other expenses."

So the finale of a solution to the whole mess?

They decide to give away for free the $80 Million Ice Breaking Ferryboat to Islands in the South pacific near Guam---here's the map:

The Marianas are about 4,500 miles from the Susitna's intended home in Southcentral Alaska.

"U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has been tracking what happens to the Susitna. It was built in her hometown and she christened it. No matter what happens, she said Wednesday, the work gave a tremendous boost to the Ketchikan shipyard, as well as valuable information to the Navy."

"As disappointing as it might be to not have it plying our waters, I would sure rather have it be working and be providing a service," Murkowski said. "If it's got to be in the Marianas because all of the Alaska options didn't pan out, I suppose that's a good use."

Honest to goodness, I would love for bgates to write the script for this screenplay, just as long as he didn't change a word coming out of Lisa M's mouth. It'd be the greatest comedy of the decade.

Monty Python and the Mat-Su's ice-breaking ferryboat

Some of us are getting worn out trying to decipher several people's posts. The Canadians are always an easy target for our wrath.

I inherited some bank stock that started as Oxford National Bank, then it became Planters N B, then Centura, and finally bought by Royal Bank of Canada before the Bust. Thankfully, Canada didn't have the Bubble we had, so the stock is still in great shape, unlike my Wachovia, which is worth 1/9th what it was 5 years ago. So if you must bank with Canadians, use RBC.

jimmy asks: ```Why not turn the tables, and insist on seeing the spending cuts first?''
I answer: because conservatives will never face the electoral consequences of cutting spending that helps their constituencies and, at the same time, know that's where most of the money goes.
Have you already forgotten how swiftly and vehemently Romney fled any suggestion that he would seek cuts in Medicare or Social Security? Can you really not remember that Romney simply refused to identify any specific spending cuts beyond PBS and Planned Parenthood (both utterly insignificant amounts)?
Are you really unaware that red states -- those that vote conservative -- SPEND MORE federal money than blue states? Or are you just too spun to acknowledge what that means for the electoral prospects of Red politicians who say "Spending cuts first?"
Wake up Jimmy. Republicans have never sincerely sought overall spending cuts. Instead, their narrative rests on the moronic concept that tax cuts are a painless, magical way to bring economic growth.
Bush's entire economic program consisted of tax cuts heaped on the wealthy. When it didn't work, Greenspan kept interest rates absurdly low in the false hope the economy wouldn't slide into recession.
Republicans will never say: "Cut spending first.'' They're all about selling the benefits of tax cuts and not talking about the costs.
Their game is to talk about the wasteful, lazy poor as a way to foment fear and disdain among white working poor people and to dog whistle antipathy ethnic minorities.
Part of that game is zealously guarding, and even increasing, spending that benefits upper-middle class and wealthy voters and that props up far suburban and rural voters.
I'm a fiscal conservative and like many others, I never vote Republicans because the record is clear: they don't cut spending, they only cut taxes and even the tax cuts are skewed wildly in favor of the wealthy.
How about this, Jimmy, instead of "Spending cuts first,'' how about "Cut corporate welfare first,'' or "Cut tax breaks for millionaires first?''
Never happen. The GOP is the party of white male privilege and all of its actions conform to that priority, regardless of what sort of rhetoric they spout on Fox. The lived by that for decades and there's just no way it's going to change, even as it plunges toward its own suicide.

Janet

This post is wonderful - The Washington Post Goes Full Bigot

RichatUF (at my secret, undisclosed location)

So that is why he included Ryan on the ticket and had a 59 or so point plan? And really, if the US government can’t make the sacrifice in the face of trillion dollar deficits of ending funding for PBS and Planned Parenthood, both of with have a billion or so in assets, then it says something quite terrible about the electorate as a whole. The Post Office by itself is over 15 billion in debt and will probably need to go to bankruptcy in the first quarter, they are already in default. The FHA and the FMs are another ticking time bomb. The student loan time bomb has probably already gone off we just don’t quite know it yet.

Are you really unaware that red states -- those that vote conservative -- SPEND MORE federal money than blue states? Or are you just too spun to acknowledge what that means for the electoral prospects of Red politicians who say "Spending cuts first?"

Are those states where all the military bases are? Old folks? States, like Alaska, that have a significant portion of land under federal ownership and control, so they can’t use their own resources to craft their own solutions (like North Dakota). Yep, it is all those red stater welfare hicks, while New York and New Jersey can’t deal with a hurricane, Detroit is on the verge of bankruptcy, and California is building high speed rail to bankruptcy.

Republicans have never sincerely sought overall spending cuts. Instead, their narrative rests on the moronic concept that tax cuts are a painless, magical way to bring economic growth.

Except that during the 1990’s, welfare reform was a significant spending cut. Since Reagan won the Cold War, the Clinton Administration and Gingrich Congress were able to also cut military spending and wrap up the National Resolution Trust Corp. The 90’s also saw Clinton, at the front end of the internet bubble, cut capital gains taxes. He got to cash those in for “surpluses as far as the eye could see”.

Bush's entire economic program consisted of tax cuts heaped on the wealthy. When it didn't work, Greenspan kept interest rates absurdly low in the false hope the economy wouldn't slide into recession.

Except Bush's tax cuts were for all income levels as we will all soon find out when they all expire. Also Greenspan raised rates when the Bush tax cuts were enacted. And come on, the unemployment rate during 03 and 04 hovered around 5% and the Bush Administration deficits were what one sixth of what they are now. Pretty sure the court media and academia would be looking to get Obama an Economics 'Nobel' if he manages to get one quarter of economic performance similiar to the Bush Administration.

Republicans will never say: "Cut spending first.'' They're all about selling the benefits of tax cuts and not talking about the costs.

I've heard many calling for spending cuts. Wasn't that the point of this deal that is now called "the fiscal cliff"?

Jim Ryan

If you want to understand fiscal conservatism, here is how. "Fiscal conservative" in Democratic language means one of two things.

Fiscal conservative:

1. If you're a member of the Dem base, it means, "I can't understand what the balance sheet implies and I don't have the math savvy to figure it out. I hear it's not good news. Now, the members of Congress and the media stoke my envy of rich people, which really feels good. And they say we should raise taxes on the rich and spend. So, I recommend raising taxes on the rich and spending more."

2. If you're a member of the Dem leadership it means "I know the next generation is screwed. But not me and my kids. I'm on the take and will live large. And that's because when I recommend raising taxes on the rich and spending more I get re-elected by my angry and envious base. The rubes! So, I recommend raising taxes on the rich and spending more."

RichatUF (at my secret, undisclosed location)

rockin' out to the deftones..."You've Seen the Butcher"...

Cecil Turner

Well, at least one side of this debate has a sensible position. Here we hear from the spending control side (Financial Times--Democrats dig in over reform) :

Mr Corker recently put forth a $4.5tn deficit reduction plan that included raising the cost of health coverage for retirees earning more than $50,000, saving about $50bn over a decade, and he is also proposing to make Social Security benefit distribution more progressive. “Especially when Democrats want wealthy citizens to pay more, this is a place hopefully where we would have common ground,” says Mr Corker.
Brilliant! And that means we just take some more money from the "earned income" side of that graph, and stack it up on the multicolored free benefits side . . . What could go wrong?

As shocking as it may be for some politicians to realize, people are actually pretty good at figuring out their monthly cash flow. And if you cut benefits from people making $50K, those making just over that will find ways not to make so much (or hide what they make). In short: if you pay people not to work, they'll oblige.

But at least that's smarter than the Democrat policy, which appears to be: "borrow money from the Chinese, and give it to the poor unemployed folks who vote Democrat . . . they'll spend it, and that'll boost the economy."

Hey, why not optimize that plan? Borrow all the PRC's money, and spend that?

Governor William J. Le Petomane: Are you crazy? They'll never go for it. And then again they might. Those little red devils... they love toys!
Er, that was supposed to be comedy, folks.

RichatUF (at my secret, undisclosed location)

They're all about selling the benefits of tax cuts and not talking about the costs

This is some of the dumbest shit I read day in and day out. How is it a cost to the government for me to keep my money? Tell you what bunker, go over to the Salvation Army, have them hook you up with a nice suit, and find a job. Get you hand out of my pocket.

The first comment at the WaPo Bigot link is good -

Nice job. More objective coverage of our beloved press would be a good thing for the country. Who, as they say, are these people? Guess you missed the embrace your hate, your envy, your fear campaign of the Obama campaign. A pity that it worked. Detroit provides a good example of the type of leadership Obama brings to the table. Pretty sure those upper income Obama voters are going to doubly feel like fools when they've got to cough up more tax money and more protection money (nee campaign contributions).

Cut corporate welfare first,'' or "Cut tax breaks for millionaires first?'

Take it up with the corporatist Obama regime, which can't produce a budget that could get any support in Congress, and the Dem senate, which can't pass one in their own chamber.

Totally OT, although actually it isn't at all, I just learned last night that they're making a move out of my favorite novel ever, Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale". They're apparently filming right now, with Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connoley, Will Smith among the cast (no idea who Will Smith could possibly be playing, as there's really no character in the book who he at all fits).

I'm excited they're doing it, but I'm also terrified of how much of a mess they may make of it. I'm not sure how they can possibly take a 700 page epic that takes place in several different eras and condense it to a 2-hour film.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite baseball players, mainly because of his name, Minnie Minoso, who is 90, and it is also the birthday of one of my favorite players who is nearly as old, and still possibly playing, Mariano Rivera, who is 43 today.

James D.

The OT bit about "Winter's Tale" is...I'm sure most of you folks know Mark Helprin is pretty conservative, and there's a great passage in the book that says exactly what we've all been saying. A coroner working in the morgue of a hospital serving one of the poorer areas of early 20th century Manhattan is speaking:

"The ladies' aides and the social critics sense immediately that I couldn't give a goddamn about all this inedible meat, and that's just what they want. They know they're better than the miserable bastards they try to help, but they really enjoy thinking that they're better than the rest of us, who aren't as 'compassionate' as they are. You notice how often that very word escapes their lips? They use it like a cudgel. Beware.

They come down here for their own benefit. It's as clear as day they love it. The great irony and perfect joke is that these wretches on the bottom of the barrel get these self-serving scum as champions. Some champions! They feed off the poor - first materially, and then in spirit. But they deserve each other in a way, because vice and stupidity were made to go together.

I know that, you see, because I was poor. but I rose like a rocket, and I know how the whole thing works. The ones who are always on your side, or so they think, are the ones who keep you down. Everything they do keeps you down. They'll forgive you for anything. Rob, rape, pillage and kill, and they'll defend you to yourself. They understand all outrages, and all your failings and faults, too. Perfect! You can go on that way forever. What do they care? Excuse me: they do care. They want it that way.

How would they make a living, these servants of the poor, if there were no poor?

What enabled me to rise above all the people who don't know enough to come in out of the rain is tha one day I looked face to face at a man who hated half of everything I was and had the courage to tell me so. I remember his very words. He said, 'What you're doing is hideous, a perfect way to die young. Unless you want to live sweetly only in the hereafter, you ought to learn how to do the right thing.'

I hate the poor. Look what they do to themselves. How cold you not hate them, unless you thought that they should be like this?"

Ranger

Fiscal conservatism is an easy sell. Voters love it.

Yep, that's why Obama promised "net spending cuts" in 2008.

The trouble for conservatives is that they have zero credibility with voters and a well-earned reputation for "Republican math'' that doesn't add up.

More credibility on the issue than Obama. The problem is Bubu, we are way past the point of easy solutions. Obama ran this time around promising there would be no pain. But there is going to be pain. The longer we wait, the more pain there will be.

BTW, I don't dispute your description of the Republican party as an advocate of corporate welfare, but if you have noticed around here, very few share that view. Our frustraition with you is that you seem to have completely missed that the Dems over the last 6 years have far overtaken the Republicans as the advocates of special privlidge for big donors and corporate cronies.

True too form, he misrepresents Tina Fey's remarks as Sarah (I don't know if he doesn't know like Baba Wawa)If something wrong happens, it's never Obama's fault, as it always was W's, the Underwear bomber plot included,

Bingo Ranger-- I'd strongly consider increasing tax collections to Clinton levels(restricting deductions and credits for the rich rather than rate increases is the much smarter way to do it) so long as we went back to spending the same % of GDP on the Federal Budget as Clinton's second term 1997-2000 -- that would be about 18.5% of GDP. So BuBu-- let's do the Clinton Dance both ways, tax collections AND spending levels. BuBu the spending cuts should be easy we don't have any of those horrid wars against the Islamofascists who want to murder us -- so we don't need to spend on those-- Right?. The amount of spending cuts to get back to Clinton levels? $600+ BILLION PER YEAR-- that's right, to get back to Clinton Spending we have to cut $600+BILLION/YEAR. I'll sign up for both right now-- are you up for that punk?

narciso

No, NK, it's like the Brehznev doctrine on spending there is never any retreat, only 'Forwart' or whatever the Russian equivalent;

Nice Link Janet. Why does it always come back to Harvard?

Ranger

NK, there is a simple way to achieve that. Go over the fiscal cliff and don't raise the debt limit. That gets you $600 billion in new revinue (most of which falls on Dems) and $600 billion in spending cuts.

Jane - Mock the media

But at least that's smarter than the Democrat policy, which appears to be: "borrow money from the Chinese, and give it to the poor unemployed folks who vote Democrat . . . they'll spend it, and that'll boost the economy."

Cecil,

You forgot one thing. You promise it to the people who vote democrat, but you only give it to people who have given you something in return.

I heard some radical socialist talking about a "wealth" tax last night. It is easier than I even dreamed. It can be done by changes to the definition of "taxable event." No need for what we must now laughingly call Congress.

Harrison Bergeron. I recall when this was so outlandish as to be humorous. DOOM.

peter, I was lucky enough to meet Minnie in St. Paul 20 years ago or so. He was old and trying to make a "comeback" through an independent league team there.

Seems the writer/director has a working relationship with Will Smith. They have a number of films together. Looks interesting though.

Forget about Citizens United, this is how you buy the presidency:

Real federal government consumption expenditures and gross investment increased 9.5 percent in the third quarter, in contrast to a decrease of 0.2 percent in the second.

NK

Ranger@946-- I don't think the budget arithmatic validates your statement, but, your statement is absolutely correct as a matter of politics. The politics of this is very simple-- let the "Cliff" thing happen. Restore the payroll taxes, hike tax rates 10% across the board, cut spending $65 in FY 2013-- that will reduce the deficit about $350B to about $750B. Well it's a start-- but WAIT-- even with that Cliff, the Debt limit is reached early 2013. Let the Cliff happen, then let Bam come hat in hand to beg for more debt because he needs $750B RIGHT NOW. Then we can talk about Obamacare repeal, Medicaid/foodstamp cuts and the long -term plan for social security and Medicare. Why will obama come hat in hand?-- because the muddle will be paing payroll taxes and higher income taxes January 1st, and the welfare/food stamp checks won't go out when the Debt limit is hit. Let the Cliff happen and wait for the debtlimit to be hit-- this is Glenn reynolds simple political IQ test.

BTW, I don't dispute your description of the Republican party as an advocate of corporate welfare,

I've tried several times to run down what Dems insist is "corporate welfare"; and have concluded it's a cutesy-sounding oxymoron that consists almost entirely of tax "loopholes" (that mostly encouraged some type of corporate activity trendy at the time the law was written). There's precious little in the way of line items or of actual spending, just tax revenues eschewed (or redistributed before collection, which amounts to the same thing).

Considering that (total) government spending is rapidy closing on 50% of GDP--which is obviously unworkable--I'd insist that the sources of taxation (and hence "loopholes") are largely irrelevant. The bottom line is that if we will eventually have to cut spending (either by actual cuts or by devaluing our currency). Neither party is particularly persuasive on fiscal matters, but the Democrats are the only ones who are consistently insistent that we can't implement the only possible solution. Eventually their policies must fail . . . the only question is what else are they going to take down with 'em.

Rich, I've read that, too. I've got no problem with Will Smith being in the film - I just can't figure out who he could possibly be playing.

I'm trying to be hopeful about it - from the little I've been able to find, it seems that the director really does love the book and has been working for several years to adapt it, so that's a good sign at least.

Cecil-

Corporate Welfare is what happens in the tax code when the lobbying money goes to the other side of the aisle.

NK

MelR@10:25 nicely summarizes why I detest DC with a passion. The Tax Code as statutory corruption. I was to ignorant and naive to understand Forbes' and Reagan's passion 30 years for a Flat Tax with virtually no deductions. They were far more knowledgeable and wise than I ever hope to be.

4 week moving average of people seeking unemployment benefits-405,000 . Obama gets re-elected with this many people seeking benefits? Unbelievable.
Bammy has no interest in a deal, he just wants the issue because he doesn't care about you and me.
They raised the debt ceiling last time with no cuts. Now we need to see the cuts front and center first or no deal. We need to play hardball.
Stop talking about Susan Rice-it's a sideshow. Ask Obama directly who gave the stand-down order. If he doesn't answer, ask Carney. If he doesn't answer ask Hillary. When is she testifying by the way?

Melinda Romanoff

Just think of the housing market collapse within a 2 hour driving radius of DC if that happened.

As in never.

James D-also adore The Winters Tale as well as Freddy and Fredericka.

It will be interesting to see how they blend the history with the fantasy. Or if one dominates.

On the wealth tax, one of the laughably false assumptions in what I read yesterday was the need for the State to take that Capital to fund needed future investments so that the wealth would no longer be in the hands of private interests.

Now it will be in the hand of private interests coupled to government's coercive powers. The Age of the Predator State is what the 21st is shaping up to be. Except for that OPM problem that means this cannot last.
